Chapter 10 - Into the Dark
Just a quick heads up everyone, I am not writing all of the voice lines word for word. Do you know how stressful that would be? I'll keep the most important lines intact but several lines will be altered to fit this AU.
"Hello there!" Poppy's cheery voice called from up above. Jumping out of the way to avoid getting hit by the box, Gabriel tilted his head back. Yep, there was indeed a living and breathing Poppy Playtime doll in the room with him. To be quite honest, this was the least surprising thing he had found so far. A chase from Huggy Wuggy in the vents can change a person.
"Thank you so much for getting me out of that god awful case. You won't believe how long I've been trapped in there," Poppy explained. She seemed cheerful despite the gloomy surroundings. It was hard to tell in the dark as well. At that moment, the knee high doll moved to the left, revealing an electrical outlet. "Wanna fire up the power?" she prompted, cocking her head to the side. Taking a step forward, Gabriel hesitantly fired the blue hand at the outlet. Lights flickered on.
"Ah, much better," Poppy chirped with delight. Gazing down at the human, she gestured to herself as she continued speaking, "I'm Poppy, Poppy Playtime." The doll remained silent, looking at Gabriel expectantly. Clearing his throat, the middle aged man introduced himself, "My name is Gabriel. I... I used to work here."
"Really? Were you one of the toy makers? Or... one of the scientists?"
"Wh... what?"
"What was your job title?"
"Oh, um... I... I was a janitor..."
"Hm, interesting," Poppy remarked, tapping a finger against her chin. A chill ran up Gabriel's spine. Did the doll know he was lying? Why was he even thinking that? This was a doll, a child's plaything! She wasn't a living being. And yet, she was.
"Hey, look. Poppy, right?" Gabriel quipped, taking another step forward. Rubbing the back of his neck, the middle aged man went on, "I... need to get out of here. This place is... unsafe, to say it kindly. Is... is there a way out?"
"Why of course silly," Poppy replied in her cheerful attitude. Entering the vent, her voice trailed off, "We'll need to catch the train..."
"Hey! Wait! Wait for me!" Gabriel shouted, realizing the doll was leaving him behind. Scrambling into the vent that had led him to Poppy in the first place, he crawled all the way back to Elliot Ludwig's office. There was Poppy, waiting patiently for him. "The train has a code," the doll chirped, "And I have it."
"That's great Poppy. Can I have it please? I'll be out of your hair- hey! Wait!" Gabriel called. Poppy had once again abandoned him, traveling through the ventilation. Exiting the office, the middle aged man listened carefully to the sounds coming from the vents. Following them, he eventually found himself in a small clearing with a massive hole in the middle of the floor. Standing in front of the hole was Poppy. "Listen," she stated, "I'm gonna need you to trust me-"
A pink hand shot up from the hole, grabbing Poppy from behind. The doll could only let out a blood curdling scream as she pulled away. Startled, Gabriel stumbled backwards and fell on the floor. What the frick just happened?! What grabbed Poppy? Every instinct inside of the man told him to leave, get as far away from this place. But he didn't know where he was in the factory. And Poppy was saying something about a train and a code that only she possessed.
He had no other choice.
Heaving himself to his feet, Gabriel ran up to the hole and jumped down. All he saw was darkness but he wasn't falling into some pitch black abyss. He was sliding down a long winding tube. Reaching the bottom, the middle aged man didn't take the time to look around at his surroundings. He could hear a faint noise down the hall. Poppy must be down that way. Running down the dark hallway, the man saw a closed door up ahead with a red hand scanner above it. Without even thinking about it, he fired his right red hand and began the process of getting it scanned when a familiar looking pink hand dropped down from above and grabbed the wire.
"A new playmate!" a voice gasped, "It's been so long."
