E x M #9 (Valentine's Friend)
I know it's a little late for a Valentine's one-shot, but I had the idea late so, what the heck? Enjoy, and if you like it then please vote!
Elaine swung open the door and gave a long, loud sigh. She slowly dragged her feet across the wooden floors and sunk down on her sofa when she finally reached it. It had been a long day of filming a music video and she felt absolutely exhausted. Then she heard a door creak open somewhere down the hallway.
To her surprise, an adorable little brown puppy with a soft pink bow tied around its neck trotted around the corner and came up to her feet. The little dog dropped a tin heart full of candies on the floor in front of her and looked up with the biggest, roundest eyes she had ever seen.
She gasped.
"What are you doing here, little fuzzball?" she said in a soft voice, leaning down and lifting the puppy up to her lap.
It yapped at her and wagged its dark colored tail. Elaine saw Martinus step quietly out of the room that the puppy had run out of.
"Tinus? Did you get me a puppy?" she asked, her voice rising in pitch with her excitement.
He leaned over and picked up the tin heart off the floor before he took a seat next to her.
"And chocolates!" Martinus said, shaking the box slightly.
"You're the best!" she cried, smiling.
Elaine leaned over and planted a kiss on his cheek before returning her attention to the puppy. The little creature gave a small yip and leaned forward to nip at Elaine's nose.
"Oh, aren't you just the cutest thing!" Elaine exclaimed, nuzzling the dog's nose with her own. "Martinus! Whatever gave you the idea?"
"I passed a sign that was advertising purebred puppies for sale. I thought about you and I knew it was Valentine's Day, so I decided to buy one!" Martinus retold, smiling the whole time.
Elaine watched as he reached over and patted the pup on the head. She drew the little dog close to her chest and kissed its head. Then she turned her eyes back to Martinus, who was giving her the happiest grin she'd ever seen.
"You're so sweet," Elaine beamed.
Martinus smiled back and winked at her, "That's me!"
Elaine laughed.
"Did you buy food for the fur baby?" She asked giving the dog another kiss.
"I did, it's in the kitchen."
"Well let's get this baby something to eat,"
Elaine cuddled the pup in her arms and stood up, taking her box of candy from Martinus' lap as she headed for the kitchen. He followed her.
Elaine sat the puppy down and gave him a tiny bowl of puppy chow and a little bit of water. She smiled down as she heard her new canine friend munching on his dinner. Martinus came up behind her and leaned his arm on her shorter shoulder.
"I think I nailed my Valentine's gift," he said, looking down at her. "What about you?"
"I was so busy at the music video shoot that I didn't pick up anything for you," she sighed, frowning. "Will a kiss and an I-owe-you dinner suffice?"
"Sure it will," Martinus smiled, turning and facing her.
Nevada suddenly burst into the kitchen and noticed the dog right away, "Doggo!" She cried out, falling to her knees and getting level with the pooch.
Elaine rolled her eyes and wrapped her arms around her boyfriend, giving him a soft Valentine's Day kiss. The little puppy yapped at Nevada as she giggled loudly at its adorableness.
"We're not gonna get any privacy," Elaine mumbled with a smile, pulling away from Martinus.
He smiled back and shrugged, resting his arm on her shoulders as she turned to address her friend. Elaine watched Nevada play with her new pup.
"What are ya gonna call it?" Nevada asked, not even making eye contact with anyone but the dog.
"I think I'll live with him a little before I actually name him. You know, see what he's like so I can fit his personality to his name." Elaine replied.
"Good idea," Nevada agreed, tugging the puppy's tail gently.
She finally looked up at the couple, her friends, and promptly noticed the tin heart on the counter.
"Is that chocolate?" she asked.
Elaine glanced at the box, "Uh, yeah,"
Nevada stood off the floor with another pat to the puppy, and slowly stalked the heart full of candy.
"Did you not get any chocolate yourself?" Martinus wondered.
Nevada stopped moving and gave him a glare, "Haha, very funny. No, of course, I didn't."
"Why not?" Elaine asked, tilting her head.
"Uh, because who would give me a Valentines gift?" Nevada scoffed, giving her a dark look.
Elaine's heart sunk. She tossed the box to her friend and Nevada almost ripped it open. Martinus face was full of question marks as he gaped at Elaine.
"Oh, hush," Elaine growled to him. "We can buy more." Then she leaned closer to his ear. "Why didn't Marcus get her anything?"
"Uh, why would he?" Martinus replied softly.
The couple watched Nevada tear into the chocolates as the little puppy tried to jump up and steal them from her.
"Because I told him too," Elaine replied, frowning.
Martinus saw the pity in her eyes.
"Don't pity her, its no good if you force someone to give her stuff for Valentines Day. It loses its meaning," he told her.
Elaine just sighed.
"Will you be my valentine, buddy?" Nevada whispered loudly to the puppy.
The pooch yapped.
-----------
"Martinus," Elaine sighed.
There were beautiful afternoon sunbeams shining through the glass doors and lighting up the quiet living room. Martinus had spread himself out on one section of the sofa with his hat over his eyes, trying to rest. Elaine was sitting criss-cross on another section of the sofa, staring down at the little puppy who was staring back at her and wagging his tail gently.
"I've had this little guy for three weeks now," Elaine continued. "I feel like it's now or never."
"Now or never for what?" Martinus asked, his face still covered with his light pink ball cap.
"Either we name 'em, or give 'em up," she said.
Martinus sighed.
"It's your choice," he said.
"Well, considering the fact that I haven't named him, haven't trained him, can barely look after his spontaneous and overly-excitable self, I'm honestly thinking about giving him away. But to who?" Elaine pondered.
"Are you sure, 'Lane?" Martinus asked. "I mean, he's really bonded with us and he seems to love Nevada too. I just hate to leave him."
"Martinus, he doesn't have a name, he's eating me out of house and home as he grows, he is gonna turn into a freaking giant dog that I don't think I can deal with roaming this house 24/7, he seriously seems to think the whole place is either his fun zone or his personal bathroom, and with this new album I'm working on, there's no way I have time or energy to train him," Elaine explained. "I think it's time."
The puppy gave a whimper.
"Sorry, dude, you're just a lot of responsibility," Elaine told him with a shrug.
There was silence as the dog jumped onto the couch and cuddled up next to Elaine.
"Did you ever figure out about Nevada's Valentine?" Martinus asked.
"You mean the non-existent one?" she replied. "No, I haven't had the time to ask Mac why he didn't give her anything. He'll probably say something like, 'I forgot' or 'Wait, you were serious?' or, my personal favorite, 'She's pretty enough, I'm sure she got plenty of chocolate from other people. She didn't need something from me to make her happy.'."
Martinus lifted the hat off his face and gave her a raised eyebrow. She sighed.
"You know what?" Martinus said. "I have an idea!"
--------
"If you're not the pizza guy, then get lost!" Nevada called out when the couple rang her doorbell. But she actually came to the door and swung it open.
"Happy super late Valentine's Day!" Elaine cried.
Nevada looked and saw Martinus standing there, holding Elaine's hand in his left and a dog leash in his right. Suddenly, the puppy surged forward and jumped up on Nevada's legs.
"What's this about?" she asked, leaning down and patting the puppy.
"Well, we felt sorry that you didn't have a Valentine so we decided to give you something better!"
"Wait, you're giving me your puppy?" Nevada asked.
"Yep!" Martinus said.
"I just don't have the time he deserves to be given, so you were the best choice for him," Elaine explained.
"Aww! Really?" Nevada asked, already on her knees once more. "I'll call him Shasta!"
"See, I told you she'd give him everything he needs! She even picked out a name super fast!" Elaine told Martinus, wrapping her arm around his middle.
Nevada smiled up at them.
"Thanks, guys!" she smiled, standing and giving them both a big hug before taking the leash and retreating into her house.
"I have a feeling we are gonna see a lot more of Shasta then we realize," Elaine laughed, now hand in hand with Tinus as they walked back down the sidewalk to her house.
"Is that good?" Martinus asked.
Elaine shrugged. They shared a smile.
"Now, mister," Elaine said as they passed a strip of stores. She lifted her hand and pointed to a candy store. "You owe me another box of chocolates,"
"Hey!" he cried, smiling. "You're the one who gave it to Nevada!"
"I only did that because Marcus failed to do what I told him to," Elaine retorted.
"Well fine, then Marcus owes you chocolate," Martinus said.
"That boy owes me more than that," Elaine said, steering them towards the candy store.
"Like what?"
"I don't know, what would someone owe me for planning their wedding?"
"You've planned his wedding?"
"And Nevada's. Of course, it's the same one, but still."
"Oh my gosh, Elaine!" Martinus laughed.
"I'm just kidding!" she replied, walking into the door he was holding open for her.
"No, you're not,"
"No, I'm not!"
So there's the story of how Nevada got her sweet Shasta dog! Please vote, mine venner!
