8 - Mistakes
CHAPTER EIGHT: NOT EDITED
After finding the half transformed Tracy lying on the ground dead, Deaton decided it was okay to bring her to the animal clinic to be worked on. The rest of us were at the hospital waiting for some news about Lydia who almost died from the amount of blood that she lost. All of us were worried about the strawberry blonde and her health in general.
"Is she going to be okay?" I asked Melissa when I saw her helping Lydia on to a stretcher.
"She will be just fine," she responded with a smile.
I followed her to the others that were waiting in the lobby with sorrow expressions on their faces. Walking over to Theo, I placed my hand on his shoulder in a way to say thanks for saving my best friend's life. My brother looked at me, nodding his head with a tight smile on his face.
"Stiles," Melissa called out to the spastic boy.
"How bad is it?" Stiles asked her.
"Could have been worse," she responded before glancing at my brother, "Theo, nice going on that tourniquet. You probably saved her life."
We all looked over at Theo who looked a bit taken back from the praise that he received. My eyes glanced over at Stiles who seemed to be fuming over the praise that my brother received from Melissa. Stiles was a confusing person, especially when it came to Theo. I could understand why he didn't trust my brother because I didn't either.
"All right, she's about to go into surgery," Melissa informed everyone, "So it's going to be awhile but I need to know if there was anything supernatural that I should be informed about before I stitch her up."
"It was the tail," Scott told her.
"Yeah, Tracy cut her with the tail, if that makes a difference," I said, cringing at the first part.
"Okay," Melissa nodded, walking off.
"But it wasn't just Tracy," Malia said, "There were the others, the guys in the masks."
After a while we all left to go home but I found myself following Scott back to his house where he said Deaton was going to meet them there. I was surprised when Scott asked me to come back with him, even Stiles agreed to his request. I don't know if it was more Scott's idea or what but I am grateful to be able to help his pack with this issue.
"Nice house," I commented when the three of us walked inside.
"Thanks," Scott said with a grin.
"Sorry to interrupt," Deaton's voice came from behind us, making me turn around to see him standing by the kitchen table, "But I did some research on the man with the blue talons and what I found left me speechless."
"What do you mean?" Stiles asked, furrowing his eyebrows.
"A werewolf with the talons of an eagle," Deaton said, pouring out the jar that contained the talons, "Possibly a shape-shifter, known in eastern mythology as a Garuda."
"What about Tracy's?" I asked, swallowing hard as I waited for the answer.
"Tracy's claws were the unmistakable claws of a werewolf," Deaton explained, "But, a werewolf who also bears the venom and the scales of a kanima."
"What do you even call that?" Scott asked him.
"Personally, I call it terrifying," he responded, "But at the moment, I'm more interested on how Tracy was able to get across the mountain ash."
"I thought nothing supernatural can do that," Stiles asked in confusion.
"As did I."
"So if Tracy was able to cross the mountain ash and no one supernatural can do that," Scott trailed off.
"Then she's not supernatural," I finished his sentence.
"Exactly," Deaton nodded, "If she wasn't born and she wasn't bitten, she had to be made."
My heart picked up after that and I knew that Scott could probably hear it. I glanced over at him to see he was to busy talking to Deaton that he didn't notice my heart rate. I realized that the Dread Doctors were doing this, it had to be. Theo said that the Dread Doctors were going to be making experiments but I didn't know when exactly.
"Made?" I swallowed hard.
"Someone is trying to make supernatural creatures with non-supernatural means," Deaton said with worry, "And whoever they are, they're somehow managing to blur the lines between science and the supernatural."
"But there's more," Scott said, "Liam said he found another hole out in the woods."
"Burying them could be part of their process, a kind of incubation," Deaton explained.
"What are we supposed to do?" Scott said with a frown.
"Same thing you've always done," he said, "Protect your friends, protect each other."
"So, what about someone like Tracy?" Stiles asked Deaton.
"I wish I could tell you," Deaton sighed, "Hopefully, I'll have some answers soon, I'll be gone for a few days."
"You're leaving?" I asked in alarm.
"Just a few days."
"How scared should we be?" Stiles asked almost in a whisper.
"I've lived in the world of supernatural a long time," Deaton said, "But I'm still a doctor. Still a man of science. Something like this happens, it rattles the foundation of everything you believe. Something like this shakes you to the core."
"Something like what?"
"The rules, the rules have changed.
--
I followed Scott and Lydia into AP Biology, an annoyed expression on my face when I realized what was going to go down today. I didn't know the full plan but I knew that Theo was going to make amends with Donovan, probably giving him ideas on how to hurt Sheriff Stilinski. My brother already threatened me this morning because he knew I would've warned Stiles about it, so I didn't.
"If 99.9% of our DNA sequence is the same as other humans, what could account for the missing 0.1% difference," Ms. Ramsey asked before looking at my brother, "Theo?"
Theo looked up with a frown before replying, "Um, nucleotides."
"That's right," Ms. Ramsey praised before a certain thunder kitsune raised her hand, "Yes, Kira?"
"Can there be more than one species in the same DNA?" Kira asked her.
"No, but there can be multiple sets of DNA in the same individual," Ms. Ramsey explained, "We call that a chimera. Anyone know where that term comes from?"
My eyes traveled around the classroom in attempt to see if anyone would know the answer. A girl in front of the class who seemed to know the answer raised her hand. Ms. Ramsey called on her only for her disappointment to be shot down when she was caught reading off of her phone under the desk.
"As you know from the reading, DNA is a fragile molecule," she said, "Isn't it, Scott. Or did you miss last night's assigned reading?"
"Kind of," Scott winced when she looked at him sternly.
"Kind of or yes?"
"Mostly yes," Scott grimace at his answer.
"Well, then thank you for another helpful transition in topic," Ms. Ramsey said before setting down some stacks of papers, "Drop forms. All those now aware that they do not belong in this class, you should fill one out. The rest will be on my desk."
--
"This way," Melissa said to the three of us, "He came in about 45 minutes ago."
After school Scott got an alarming phone call from his mom about a student named Corey Bryant who supposedly got hurt by a rumored chimera, which is why were in the hospital at this moment. When we arrived to the door, a faint scream could be heard from the outside, making us all wince at how loud it truly was.
"I'm gonna find an anesthesiologist covering acute pain," Melissa informed us, "See what you can do."
"Okay," Scott nodded, walking into the room with his mom following behind.
"Melissa, what's happening to him?" I swallowed hard at how loud the boy was screaming in pain.
"It's the pain," she explained, "Nothing's working and we've already pumped him full of morphine."
The boy continued to whimper when I looked at the nurse, "Can't they do anything to help him?"
"We can put him in a medically induced coma its how we help burn victims deal with the pain."
"Let me see if I can help," Scott said, taking a step forward towards the boy.
"Please make it stop," the boy whimpered, "Please make it stop."
Scott took a step forward, wrapping his hand around the boy's arm in attempt to take his pain. From my understand, werewolves can take people's pain away, making them more relaxed in the end. I watched in awe at how black veins were appearing on the alpha's arm, and the boy's scream went down to a whimper.
"Scott," Melissa warned, "Let go."
"Let go," Kira said to Scott.
Scott let go, gasping out in pain at how much he took away from the boy, "I'm okay."
"Let me see it," I said to Melissa, "Let me see his arm."
When Melissa turned the boy's arm over, my eyes widened at how bad it looked, "Holy.."
"What is that?" Kira asked, looking between all of us.
Melissa sighed, "The lab says scorpion venom."
"Scorpion?" Scott said, his eyebrows furrowing in confusion.
"I know," Melissa nodded, "But that's not the weirdest part. Because a sting this bad means that he should have been dead 10 hours ago, and the scorpion that stung him would have been 10 feet tall."
"Please tell me that doesn't mean there's a giant scorpion running around Beacon Hills," I sighed at the news.
"Lucas."
Our head snapped to Corey who said the name, "It was Lucas."
Scott looked at us before walking towards the boy, "Hey, Corey? What did Lucas did to you, he's gonna do it to someone else, and it's gonna be much worse. We need to know what happened."
"I don't really know," Corey sighed, "He's never been like that before."
"Like what?"
"Aggressive," Corey responded, "We were taking it slow, but it wasn't me. He was the shy one. Then we're hanging out today and it's like he was a different person."
"Like, different how?" I asked, swallowing hard.
"Like, super confident," Corey said, "We were just kissing and then I fell this sharp sting on my arm and then I looked up at him and I swear his eyes turned black."
"You mean totally black?" Scott questioned, frowning at his words.
"The whole eye, but it was only for a second," Corey said, "And then he said sorry, that he'll see me at the club tonight and then he just left. And then a few minutes later, I'm in the worst pain of my life."
"Hold on, you said club?" Scott asked, "What club?"
"Every Friday night," Corey responded, "Sinema."
"Let's go," Scott said, heading for the room when my phone went off.
"Hold on, I have to go to the school," I said after receiving a text from Stiles.
"Okay, meet us there?" Scott asked me.
"Sure."
I ran to my car. not caring that people were honking their horns at me when I cut in front of them. I unlocked my door and got inside before quickly heading to the school only for me to see Stiles's jeep on the side of the road. I pulled up next to him, getting out of my car and walking to the window to see the pale boy unrolling it down.
"Stiles?" I said, frowning at his facial expression, "Stiles, are you okay?"
"I killed him," Stiles said, tears streaming down his face.
My eyebrows raised in horror, "Stiles, what do you mean? Who did you kill?"
"I killed him," he repeated what he said before.
"Who?"
"Donovan."
