Prologue
Cody dipped his feet into a cold lake during an unusually sunny day. Everytime the weather was like this, he always made sure to use that day to the fullest. And almost every time, it started to rain again later on anyway, but Cody paid no mind. As long as he was having fun, he would stay out regardless.
"Three, two, one..."
"Hi Cody!"
Cody broke out in a grin as, right on cue, his best friend Elijah came over to play. "I found a ladybug!" The boy announced triamputhently. "Woah, cool, let me see!"
Elijah smiled widely as he uncupped his hand as to revaeal, as he said, a tiny ladybug. "Aren't these, like, good luck?" Cody snickered a bit. "No, no, you're thinking of butterflies. Ladybug's are still pretty neat, though!"
Elijah nodded in agreement. "Aye, they are! My da is always look out for butterflies but I think Ladybugs are bonnier," he told him. His Glaswegien accent always got about ten times thicker when he was passionate about something.
Cody hummed a bit, kicking his feet a little in the water, watching it splash about. "Goodness!" Elijah giggled. "Don't get that water on me! Being wet feels yucky..," he whined softly, making Cody roll his eyes playfully.
"Everything feels yucky to you, Eli."
"Does not!"
"Does to."
Elijah huffed and pushed Cody gently. Cody pushed back, resulting in the two getting into a mini war of shoving each other back and forth until eventually-
Splash.
"I'm sorry, Cody!" Elijah rushed out of his mouth, guilt immedientally washing over him. "I'm okay!" Cody assured, climbing out of the lake. The boys stared at each other for a moment before beginning to laugh hysterically, both of them almost falling back in the lake.
When they were called back into the house, Cody's mum, Maisie, didn't look too impressed with Cody being soaking. "I tripped and fell," he lied, not wanting Elijah to get into trouble. Maisie looked skeptical, but let it go. After Cody had a shower and his hair washed and dried, he stepped into the living room to see Elijah playing with one of the colouring books he brought. He wasn't very good at colouring inside the lines, but hey, eight year olds.
"Cody!" Elijah waved at him as if he wouldn't have seen him otherwise. "Look what I coloured in!" He lifted up the book to present to him a drawing of a butterfly that was coloured by, well, him. "It looks nice and pretty, doesn't it?" Cody nodded quickly in agreement. "Very pretty."
Elijah grinned, turning the next page that just so happened to be a ladybug. "Cody! Cody! Ladybug! Ladybug!" He bounced excitedly, immedientally getting out the correct colours, handing Cody some. "Colour with me?" Cody smiled back at him and nodded. "Of course."
After they finished, Elijah poked Cody with one of the pencils, urging him to go show his mum. Cody eventually obliged, running up to his mother and showing her the picture. "Look! We coloured it together!"
Maisie gave him a kind smile, ruffling his hair. "It looks wonderful."
Cody had a long look as he the colouring book was now hung up on the wall in the apartment on that page, shaking his head with a soft smile.
"Eh. I'd say it's a six out of ten at best."
