Sleepy, Dopey and other Snow Witticisms
As usual, it appears I'm on the cusp of conforming. In fact, in many ways, I suspect I'm a complete cusp-in-the-arse, but you'll have to ask the current Mrs Wilson about that one.
I'm normally dopey, rarely see the Doc, am often grumpy (depending on sleepy), tend to err towards happy (once I've had coffee), don't really do bashful or sneezy, and get limited amounts of sleepy due to kids and an overactive Brian.
But the concept of the 'right amount' of sleep has always interested me. It's a source of endless study, with proclamations of "I only need four hours a night" from various folk who usually looks like they've been dragged out of a hedge backwards.
But, according to experts, "it depends." (good old science =] )
There's no perfect sleep number that can fit every person, but a report by The National Sleep Foundation's (probably a cure for insomnia in itself) has noted a list of sleep duration recommendations for all age groups.
Newborns (0-3 months): 14-17 hours each day.
Infants (4-11 months): 12-15 hours each day.
Toddlers (1-2 years): 11-14 hours each day.
Preschoolers (3-5): 10-13 hours each day.
School age children (6-13): 9-11 hours each day.
Teenagers (14-17): 8-10 hours each day.
Younger adults (18-25): 7-9 hours each day.
Adults (26-64): 7-9 hours each day.
Older adults (65+): 7-8 hours each day.
It should be noted that these are recommended, not desired. My kids have conditioned me to get up at about 0630 every morning, irregardless of what time I hit the hay.
Good for writing perhaps, but not good for grumpy, sleepy or dopey...
(and if you want a cool version of Snow White, read Neil Gaiman's short story Snow, Glass, Apples. Snow White is definitely grumpy, and possibly scary, freaky, deathly, nasty, unhappy and odd. Very neat story though)
