Chapter 49 - Withered
"Who would you save first, your friend, a family member, or a total stranger?" Was the question that was asked of her as she sat on her hospital bed, staring back at the man-dog with a frown.
She didn't answer him, not knowing why he would even attempt to get an answer out of her with a question like that. It didn't make any sense to her.
It has been three days, three sessions; this one being the third. Hound Dog wasn't no authorized therapist, but he did have a degree in psychology, and had been the one helping her twin out in UA for the past 3 months. He was the best choice instead of just assigning Elle with a random stranger.
She didn't remember much of what happened, it was like she was in a dreamless sleep, but still aware of her surroundings and nightmares, watching her own body from a far.
She knew she needed to get better, she had to, was expected to by everyone around her. Whether it be with good intentions or bad, it still put pressure on her to get better as soon as possible.
She stayed silent, chewing on the inside of her cheek out of habit.
"I'm going to take your silence as you do not know." She rolled her eyes, releasing a tired sigh, "It's a dumbass question." Hound Dog chuckled, 'At least she is talking now since then.' He thought to himself.
"Your brother thought of the same thing, he didn't answer it until a month later." Elle quirked a brow, slightly curious. "Which was?"
"Up to you to find that out." 'Wow, mind games...' She dryly replied in her mind, looking to the tv that was turned on, but no sound coming from it. Muted, so their attention could be solely on this session. It gave her something else to look at besides the regular white and baby blue walls, her computer, the machines on either side of her, and then the 'therapist' sitting across from the front of her bed with a notebook on his lap, ready to write.
"Let's move on with something that you probably would answer.... Ah woof! What did you want to be when you were a kid?" Hound Dog knew this would be a dicey subject, this would lead to Elle having to look through her childhood recollection for the answer, but if she wanted to get better, she needed to face this head on. This would also help in diagnosing her mental troubles. (He was given permission to diagnose her, but will have to gain a second word from a certified therapist to make sure of his findings).
The heterochromic girl leaned back, split eye color gaze looking to the tiled ceiling. What the hell, like- Who's idea was it to make the ceiling of a hospital room tiled???
"I never thought about it... We were always told we were going to be Pro-Heroes, so I never actually stopped and thought about what I wanted to become." Elle slightly seethed out in recollection. Hound Dog's smile warped into a frown, writing down her words. It was the same as Shoto's...
"How about this... What do you want to be now? After all this gets sorted?"
"Quirkless." Hound Dog about choked on his own spit, his mind boggling. Elle stared back at him, eyes dead set onto his. 'Quirkless?' No one could just become quirkless, you were either born with the gene or not, she was born with it, and so she had a quirk. A powerful one at that.
"Why do you want to be quirkless, Elle?"
"A much simpler life. Sure the Quirkless population is getting smaller every year but- At least then I won't have to have anything expected of me."
"Normalcy."
"Yeah, I guess that." Elle fell quiet after that, Hound Dog as well, his pen tapping against the page, staring down at the words he had written. Her response was immediate, barely a second had passed before she answered it.
She wanted to be something that she couldn't be because of genetics. Something frankly impossible, but he guessed with how AllMight ended his own career, it wasn't entirely impossible. But he could still use his quirk, just not as often or for very long.
It made Hound Dog wonder if anyone else with quirks wanted to be quirkless like Elle did. And what were their own reasons for it?
He will need another voice to figure out her complex reasoning behind it, because Elle surely won't just lay it flat on him. That's not how her speech worked. She kept things vague and simple. Getting her point across in different ways. It could be frustrating to deal with, but that was just how she was. He would prefer that instead of her shutting down on him or lashing out.
"Have you used your quirk si- In the past three months?" He caught himself, hoping Elle didn't notice the sudden jump in his voice and demeanor.
"I haven't."
"How does that feel?"
"Suffocating." Hound Dog leant back, stopping his pen tapping. "You need to find a way to let loose of your frustrations. Not being allowed to use your quirk is leaving you to feel all pent up. Your quirk relies heavily on your emotions, we will need to find and design a way for you to conquer that." Elle's eyes found his own, showing the conflicted feelings fighting in her mind. She did want to get better, to be better, to have a normal life, but just how much did she need to work in order to get something that should have been hers for a long time already?
---
The rest of the session ended, leaving Elle in the room, Hound Dog bowing his head as a short farewell as he made his way out of the door.
Elle sat in silence for a few moments, holding a pillow against her front, arms wrapped securely around it.
The door opened again, her last visitor for today walking in, shutting the door behind him.
"Hello Elle, how are you doing today?" Elle shrugged up at the detective, "As any other day." He nodded as he took his seat where Hound Dog used to be.
"Sadly I can't sugarcoat anything for you today-"
"I would rather you not, it's annoying." She retorted quickly. Tsukauchi chuckled with a small nod.
"Alright then... We need a statement from you, Elle. For the Endeavor case." Elle stiffened, her grip on the fluffy pillow tightening. Tsukauchi eyed her for a moment, garnering her reaction, waiting for her muscles to ease back to normalcy before speaking again after a minute and a half.
"We won't be able to hold him in our custody for much longer for this case. We have already held him for three months, and have collected as much evidence as needed to keep him in custody for this long however- The public and court's opinions against ours is superior if we don't have the last statement from the last Todoroki."
"Has she made a statement yet?" Elle questions him softly, her eyes briefly flickering to the family photo on her night stand that Shoto left for her when she first came here to the hospital.
"We were given permission. I only gotten her statement last week after having to dodge bullets with the ward to speak to her about the subject." Tsukauchi clicked his tongue, moving the conversation along.
"Where would you like to start, Elle? Or would you prefer me to call you Todoroki Sachiko during this road down memorabilia?" Elle rolled her eyes, releasing a deep sigh as she thought back to herself, her small child body present in her mind.
"Whatever suits your report of my statement."
"Very well.".
Elle removed the pillow from her lap, placing it behind her as she leant back, searching her mind for a good enough memory to start this statement off with, in reality this felt more like a therapy session than it did with Hound Dog. But Tsukauchi wasn't her therapist, he had a job to do in order to trial Endeavor, Todoroki Enji, her own father.
"Where do you want me to start?"
"The freshest memory from your child, a first memory perhaps?" Elle smiled softly, knowing what her first memory was.
"So before the trauma happens to me and Shoto?"
"Correct."
She turned her head, laying on her side, staring at the photo that was taken months before she left with Touya, before she was starving and living on the streets with her older brother. She stared at the twins holding hands, she stared at her young self straining a smile, shoulders tensed and eyes slightly looking off to the side to stare at her brother in her peripheral for reassurance.
"I was playing with Shoto, that's my earliest memory. It was before either of ours quirks developed, but Enji could tell just because of our hair our quirks would be up to his standards. That's why he didn't go and knock up my mother again forcefully."
"Enji abused your mother even in that way?" Elle nodded, "Touya saw it happen, has heard my mother crying while in the bedroom, watching my mother cry in sorrow everytime she fell pregnant with one of us. I don't think she could bare having another one even if Enji tried making her take it."
"His first memory isn't as fruitful and filled with happiness like mine is. Because from my very first memory I was with Shoto. We were happy just being in the presence of each other. I guess that's just the bond us twins have." 'The bond of siblings, the bond of twins that is somehow significantly stronger than before with the rise of quirks...' Tsukauchi thought as he wrote down her words.
"When did the abuse start?"
"Shoto developed his quirk before I did, he created ice at first, but Enji pushed him to spout out fire, I... Shoto didn't for a couple of days, so Fuyumi, Natsuo, and Mom helped him out in controlling his ice. While Enji pushed and pushed for Shoto to create fire, soon one day it went too far. Enji almost disintegrated Shoto in the training room one day. I was there as a onlooker, and without even thinking I placed myself right in front of my brother, my arms covered my face, and somehow the flames diverted onto either side of us... That's when the abuse started."
"The first time you use your quirk, it was also tied to your emotions?" Elle shrugged before narrowing her eyes at him, "I don't know, why do you ask? I'm pretty sure that isn't needed in the statement." Elle fired at him.
"No no no no- I didn't mean it in that way, just... An outlook to how your emotions are tied to your quirk. I won't put this in the statement as it is not needed for the case." Tsukauchi easily answered to her fire, not wanting to hurt her in anyway and have her shut down on him. It won't help either of them in moving forward.
"Good, what else do you need?"
"Any other abuse instances that you can think of?" Elle's spark of normalcy seemed to stop all at once, her spoken words changing, her eyes glossing over as if she may cry but tears never escaped, none never welled up, she just stared at Tsukauchi. Stared, stared, and stared.
"Elle...?" She stayed silent, not earning even a flicker of a glance for her eyes, or her shoulders untensing. She just... Stayed there, sat up against her abundance of pillows.
Tsukauchi got up from his seat, setting his notebook down with the beginning of her statement on the seat. He walked forward, carefully taking a seat on the edge of her bed, offering a hand out to her for her to take. She didn't reach out to him, remained unmoving.
The man was tempted to call for Hound Dog to assist in getting Elle back down to earth, but honestly- He was afraid to leave the hospital room.
When he got the statements from her other siblings, it may have taken a while for them to answer any of his questions, but they never stopped on him like this. Never looked like their mind was elsewhere.
But Elle wasn't like her other siblings.
And he needed to figure out why Enji's abuse affected her as much as it did with her mother, who was willing to talk but took three months to actually formulate good enough answers that were true to the story she told of the abuse Enji put her and her children through.
He didn't press any further, didn't advance on asking her questions or trying to catch her attention, just left her thoughts and mind run its course.

This chapter takes place sometime in November but whatever it's fine-
I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas and New Years, I won't keep you for long since I am tired after a long day and need to sleep surprisingly enough, coming from someone who has been running on 5 hours of sleep or just hibernates for 16 hours, barely an inbetween. I need to fix that cause that isn't healthy I know.
Thank you all for reading and I will talk to you all later! -Golden
