Chapter 21 - Lost Girl
Shoto, Fuyumi, and Natsuo entered the room, feeling the short breeze of the ac hit them as the door opened. The three walked in, the older brother taking initiative to close the door behind them.
It was a crisp afternoon, not usually when Shoto would visit, but it was the only time all of their schedules would line up just so they could visit her, their mother.
Beforehand, they had all visited her separately, Natsuo having been the first, then Fuyumi, then Shoto. And lastly and certainly least, Enji.
They decided collectively together, that it was time to tell her what happened all of those years ago, surely their mother was getting suspicious of them by now. Whenever asked when their other siblings would visit her, they redirected the conversation or made up a story, the stories weren't adding up to put it shortly.
They hated lying to her- It was getting harder every visit and couldn't bare with the guilt of having to do this to her in fear of a episode. She was certainly better since years ago, but they didn't want to see her hurt herself after finding out that- That her two children weren't alive.
They consulted her Psychiatrist, Doctor, hell even their own father about this. They were trying to work on their broken and dysfunctional family, Fuyumi wanted them all to be happy, what Touya and the youngest of the Todorokis would have wanted. That's all they ever wanted, a happy family.
Shoto held onto the picture frame that he taken out of the inside pocket of his jacket, grimly staring at his mother who laid in bed, book in hand with soft music playing in the background, content.
Fuyumi took a few steps forward as Natsuo slid over chairs for the three of them, the scraping against the marble flooring made the woman realize three of her children were here together, that made her smile.
"Hey Mom, are you enjoying that book?" Fuyumi asked her, the woman nodding. "I am, it was recommended to me by Nurse Joi."
"I'm glad that they are finally letting you see a tad bit of the outside world now." Fuyumi commented with a soft smile, relief in her veins. Her mother was happy and content currently, it sucked that they would have to swipe the rug out from underneath her. The only upside to this was that she would be hearing this from her children, not the media. It was a lingering fear at the back of their minds, the news of the two missing Todoroki children could easily be bring back to light again, even if Enji did everything in his power to keep it under wraps, it may not have been good enough.
"I am too, Fuyumi." (HOLD UP, WHEN WRITING THIS, I JUST REALIZED. 'FUYU' MEANS WINTER IN JAPANESE, AS IN ふゆ IM- Ahem, back to our regular schedule programming. Ignore the screaming weeb who is learning Japanese).
"There has been talk about you getting discharged in the next two years, we can show you so many awesome spots! They rebuilt the old aquarium and by then Shoto would be graduating from UA-" Natsuo stated excitedly, remembering that they were given permission to tell her that.
"Only Shoto? What about **********?" Rei questioned him, showing her confusion in her features as she slipped her book marker into the book, saving the page she was on before closing it and letting it rest at her side on the bed. White noise entered Shoto's mind, the lingering feeling of the absensity of his twin, the thought they he would never graduate school with her by his side.
The three shared a look, more importantly to Shoto. Shoto could only frown sadly, glancing down at the picture frame in his lap, the sight of the family photo of all of them together. The last one, before Rei was put in here, before the fire...
"Shoto?" She questioned, leaning over to rest her hand on his. The boy looked up, watching her eyes search his for any indication on what has gotten him upset.
"Mom..." Fuyumi started, doing her best to keep her voice as leveled as possible, "We... We have to tell you something.".
---
The sound of a camera flashing and the blinding light of the flash caught Shoto off guard, blinking rapidly afterwards as the photographer reeled back to see how good the photo had turned out. Shoto glanced behind him, seeing Enji standing tall, the smallest of stubbles on his face from shaving specifically for this family photo. Then to his right at his twin sister, her hands folded behind her back and adorning a blue sundress that contrasted her heterochromia eyes and hair, the colors popping out. He wore something similar, a white button down shirt with a blue tie and brown slacks. His hands folded in front of him instead of behind. The two youngest were the most dolled up for this photo, Enji- Only wearing a black long sleeve and jeans. Touya adorning something similar but it was a turtleneck with a chain necklace around his neck with a symbol Shoto couldn't identify. Natsuo wearing a dress shirt and pants to match the color scheme, Rei and Fuyumi matching with a white frilly top and leggings- They were all dressed to impress to put it shortly. To show the media and the world how prestige and 'happy' their family was.
"Don't move, ********." Enji ordered Shoto's twin gruffly, the girl who was moving her neck to crack it from it's stiffness, glanced back at him, a soft glare forming. Shoto could see in his peripheral Touya smirk at the small rebellion nature she had been showing more and more as each day passed.
"*********, we are almost done, you can stretch all you want afterwards." Stated Rei softly, her voice not harsh and intimidating like her husband's. The girl reacted differently, showing her favoritism on which parent she loved the most. She nodded with a gleeful smile, turning back around to face the camera.
"Could the Todoroki twins hold hands? And Endeavor and Mrs. Todoroki, get closer together so there isn't a huge gap." The photographer stated, bringing his camera back up to his eye to see through the lens. His twin grabbed his hand, sending him a quick smile and wink as the two parents shuffled to get closer together, but not close to the point of being squashed together how the photographer would have liked. But he had kept the family this long in taking photos, he just figured they were tired from standing up straight and in one place for so long. Not that something was going on behind the scenes.
A few more photos were taken, the photographer declaring the session over. While everyone else went to the photographer to make small talk, Shoto and his twin stayed behind in the same spot, the girl too comfortable to let go of her brother's hand.
"Shoto?" Shoto blinked, the nickname of his not being used. He stared at her, watching her eyes avert down to the ground to her feet.
"If... If I disappear one day, what would you do?" When she looked up, she was met with her brother's confusion. Their eyes and hair mirroring one another, the opposites. He wasn't expecting that question, they were only kids and shouldn't even be thinking of that possibility. They were the children of the Number Two Hero, so they were well protected in terms if someone were to break in and whisk one of them away.
Her question may have caught him off guard, but nonetheless answered her.
"What I would do?" She nodded, chewing on her bottom lip.
"Yeah..." She muttered softly.
"I would go and find you." She blinked, her eyebrows raising.
"What if... You couldn't?"
"I would find you, no matter what."
"Promise?" She raised their conjoined hands, showing that their promise wasn't going to break. He nodded, smiling.
"Promise.".

Elle clutched at her chest, her chest constricting in pain as she fell to her knees, dropping the book she was reading onto the ground with a harsh thump. Tsukauchi jumped out of his seat, seeing her on her knees, her face contorting in pain.
"Shit, call for an ambulance right now!" Tsukauchi stated, on edge as he whirled his jacket on in one swift movement. His partner dialing the ambulance number off of speed dial.
Elle breathed out in ragged breaths of pain, her chest feeling like it was on fire. It came in one fell swoop, her asthma wasn't triggered, it couldn't have been. Haruhi had made sure the downstairs was cleaned from all dust to prevent it from happening. So why the hell was she in pain right now?
On the other side of the spectrum, Shoto clutched at his chest, feeling the same type of pain, his subconscious hollering at him, his family around him asking him what was wrong, Fuyumi running out to get a doctor. What was happening? Why was it happening?
Elle's vision blurred, bile rising in her throat as she did her damn best to keep it down. She grew hot, fingernails digging into the material of her shirt.
Tsukauchi left the station, jumping into his vehicle and turning his sirens on before speeding off to the Kirishima Home. The ambulance was on its way, but he was closer, he could get there faster. She could get help faster.
His partner then dialed the number to Haruhi's job, waiting for the line to connect to tell her something was wrong with Elle. It was so sudden, it was a peaceful day for some, Elle was relaxing, enjoying a new book after countless hours of studying, getting lost in a fictional world, away from reality. Tsukauchi was awaiting for confirmation on what happened two nights prior. Elle's blood was stolen, if that hadn't happened they wouldn't have been surveillancing her anymore, it became something else. Instead of watching her every move, seeing when she would strike if she really wanted to cause harm- It was to protect her.
Dots blinded her vision, heaving out constricted gasps of air, her asthma now kicking in from all of the constricting. Her abdomen screaming in pain, her muscles, chest, her whole body. Until she collapsed onto the floor, blacking out.
Tsukauchi arrived two minutes later, having sped through traffic with the help of his sirens, not even bothering to put the police car in park as he got out of the car and ran to the front door, jiggling the door handle that was locked. He stepped back a few spaces, ramming his side into the door until he broke the lock, the door swinging up with a loud thud as it clashed into the wall. Tsukauchi ran in, his shoes hammering against the flooring and into the living room, falling to Elle's side and lifting half of her body up, checking her pulse.
"Sir, is she alright?!" His partner questioned him and Tsukauchi nodded with a sigh of relief. "She is out cold, wait for the ambulance outside." His partner nodded, retreating back outside.
Shoot breathed in deeply, the pain stopping. He closed his eyes, taking in a few deep breaths to calm down his heart rate.
"Shoto, are you okay?" Natsuo questioned his little brother worriedly. Shoto could only nod, the sudden pain in his body disappearing completely with no reason. Why did it... Why was he in pain in the first place? He glanced around him at the faces of his family members before stopping solely on his mother's, seeing her tear stained face. She wiped away her tears, closing her eyes before smiling softly at him, relieved to see that he was okay. Shoto smiled back at her, slowly inching over to her side and giving her a hug, the woman burying her head into his shoulder, squeezing him as if he was a lifeline.
"Thank goodness... I don't want to lose you too...".
--- (HAHAHAHAHA)
Kirishima rushed down the hospital hallway after being directing by the nurse of what room number his friend was in, his heart pounding in his eyes, hearing the sounds of the hospital ring in the background of his conscious. Elle... Elle was hurt, she was in trouble. He wasn't there for her to help her, to protect her.
He only got minor details about what happened, a few speculations by doctors but nothing set in stone, so his mother didn't tell him anything regarding what cause it to happen or what it was called. All that mattered was that she was stable now and in the care of the hospital staff.
He always had a feeling the girl hated hospitals, time and time again she refused to go to one, especially when it came to her asthma. She didn't want to be seen by a doctor nor nurse or any medical specialist. It felt like she didn't only hate them, she was fearful of them. He didn't understand why, hospitals were a place to go to in order to get help to get better- Then again, Elle had been living on the streets for most of her life, she can only imagine what Dabi filled her innocent mind with.
He clenched his fist tightly, his jaw clenching before spotting his mother waiting outside the door to Elle's hospital room. He shook his head, 'Not the time to be angry, Eijirou.' He reminded himself, halting and relaxing his figure. But his tense shoulders still being seen by his mother. Haruhi, with dried up tears on her face, pulled him into a hug, telling him she was okay, that she was going to be okay. She was stable, they are still differentiating the possibilities on what had happened to her. From what Haruhi had overheard from the doctors- There was many problems.
An hour passed before they were let into the room, Elle fast asleep on the hospital bed, the hospital staff having been kind enough to keep her eye patch over her eye to respect her privacy (From what Tsukauchi told them). Kirishima sighed in relief at the sight, her breathing stable, heart rate making soft beeps from the monitor. Kirishima walked around the bed and took a seat, Haruhi telling him that she is going to go to the cafeteria to get the two of them food, they had both left before having lunch and were starving, it didn't help that Kirishima used his quirk a bunch that morning for Heroics Class. He scratched at the side of his face, red eyes scanning the room and over Elle. He was worried, so worried about the girl. He didn't know what to do with himself in this situation. Why when everything seemed to have been going good in her life, something bad happens? There was the fire, and now this... Elle was like a magnet for misfortune. He didn't want that for her. He wanted her to be happy.
He ran a hand through his hair, his fingers not so easily slipping through the gelled up spiky hair. Elle didn't deserve any of this.
A few minutes passed before the boy spotted movement on the bed, the twitching of her nose and rolling of her ankles from under the covers, she was starting to wake up. He smiled softly, waiting for her to become fully conscious of herself and her surroundings before speaking, the dual-colored hair girl glancing around the room as she slowly sat up, eyes narrowed and squinting. "How are you feeling?" Kirishima questioned her, the girl jumping at the sound of his voice. She looked to him, blinking a few times. He could her eyes widen into saucers, fear.
Elle pushed the covers off of her in one swift motion and throwing her legs over the side of the bed. "Shit, shit, shit. Why am I here?!" Kirishima stood up, pressing his hands onto her arms, stopping her from moving any further. "Woah, woah, calm down. You are safe, Miyuki." Her breath hitched, vaguely remembering that she did give him permission to call her by that name when alone.
The brief moment of relief on her face vanished, eyes hardening into a glare like the red head's quirk, eyes shifting to the door behind her.
"Get me out of here, Kiri."
"I can't do that. We need to figure out what happened today." She looked at him puzzledly for a moment, 'Wait...' She grabbed his arm, pulling up the sleeve of his uniform blazer to look at the time on his electronic watch. It was around lunchtime, she remembered reading around 10 am, no one was home with her, she was alone. She slowly looked up at Kirishima, suspicion settling in.
"No one was home with me, you were at UA and Haruhi was at work. She wasn't supposed to be home until 4." Elle stated, letting go of his wrist and taking a step back till the back of her knees hit the bed frame, letting herself plop down onto the mattress.
"Uh, well, I can explain that..." Kirishima muttered, rubbing the back for his neck. He didn't even know about this detail when it came to letting Elle stay with them, he suspected it, but was confirmed when out in the hallway with his mother. She told him. Before Kirishima could continue, Haruhi entered the hospital room, a familiar man walking in tow. Elle looked back at them, brows furrowed and a small curl of her lips down into a frown. She pushed herself off of the bed, ready to charge over to the two if it weren't for Kirishima grabbing a hold her arm, holding her back.
"What am I? A fucking fugitive now?!" Tsukauchi tensed at her tone, his eyes going between Haruhi and Kirishima.
"You told them?" Tsukauchi questioned Haruhi, who shook her head. "Only Eijirou to explain to him how she got to the hospital so fast." The two adults looked to Kirishima, who shook his head quickly enough to crack his neck painfully. He winced, but nonetheless answered.
"I-I didn't say anything! Yet- I was about to before you guys walked in." Elle ripped her arm out of Kirishima's grip while he was distracted, stalking to Tsukauchi and grabbing the front of his suit.
"Elle-!" Haruhi began, setting down the tray of food on her bed, Elle ignoring her, "You fucking watched me?!"
"Miss Koriniku-"
"No, you had no fucking right to watch me when I'm trying to fucking live a normal life!" Tsukauchi could have sworn the room went down in temperature staggeringly, the hand she was holding the front of his shirt with beginning to be covered in a small layer of frost.
"Elle, sweetie, calm down. It was for good reason, we just want you to be safe." Haruhi told her, keeping her voice calm to not further anger or frustrate the girl, placing her hand on her right arm. She reeled back with a low hiss of pain, holding her hand. Elle blinked, looking over at Haruhi, loosening her grip on the material of clothing.
"Mom,are you okay?" Kirishima questioned, instantly going to his mother and grabbing a hold of her hand, seeing her fingertips were bright red.
"Miss Koriniku, take a few deep breaths and calm yourself. You are losing control of your quirk again." 'Shit, my right side...' Elle thought, worry pressing her. She burned Haruhi just by the temperature of her exposed right arm below the short sleeve that Haruhi had touched. She burned the woman.
"Shit, I'm sorry Haruhi-"
"It's okay darling, just a bit of frostbite." Haruhi told her, mistaking the burns on her fingertips for frostbite. Was her right side that hot to be mistaken for frostbite? Or was it just because Haruhi really believed that her quirk was only ice based, not fire. She didn't know, but was hoping that the burns weren't too bad to need medical attention. Her heart lurched into her throat at the thought of having been watching, this whole time. Her privacy was invaded, hell, they could know so much more than what they were leading on for all she knew. That worried her.
"Sit down and I will explain why we installed cameras into the Kirishima Home." Tsukauchi stated, his tone sharp. Trying to get her to comply and listen to what he had to say. Elle could only nod, sitting down on the bed, next to the tray of hospital food from the cafeteria.
