Chapter 16 - Normal
Drawing done by me! -Golden

Kirishima cooked away in the kitchen while Elle fought away her fatigue, Kirishima a few minutes before having shown her how to use the remote to the tv, the channels on it vast and overwhelming so she stuck to the news channel, the daily reports of pro heroes and the weather mostly, it's what she would usually see if she passed by a tv store or on a big monitor in the city, it was the usual for her, but now she was actually in a home to watch it. Not on the streets.
She could hear Kirishima working in the kitchen by the clanging of pans and the fridge opening and closing. His genuine and kind personality was hard to believe sometimes, how quick he was to offer his home to her, even after learning who she was related to. He didn't care, cause he- He saw her as his friend, not a villain, not the sister of a villain, a homeless girl, squatter- None of the above. He liked her for her. She wasn't used to that. He trusted her enough, and she was beginning to slow trust him more.
She messed with her eye patch, her eyes fixated on the tv but not knowing what was being displayed, foggy and unhinged, the sound drowning out until she could only hear her own heartbeat and intakes of breath, releasing and breathing in the oxygen, the clean air, so different from the apartment, largely different. She was still taken aback that he trusted her, that he respected her privacy when it came to her eyepatch- She didn't know what to do if the eye patch randomly went missing or fell off of her face, to reveal her blue eye. Heterochromia. She began to dislike lying more and more with every passing moment she spent with her new found friend- But, she needed to protect herself. She was first priority right now, someone was already after her, she couldn't risk anyone finding out she was and send her to the Todoroki Estate. She didn't want nor need that. She wasn't going to go live with that bastard again after everything.
She snapped out of her thoughts, a news report coming in, and she could feel her body freeze up, her hand falling down to her side at the sight of the singed and half collapsed apartment, a news anchor standing in front of the police line.
"At 5:32 yesterday evening, a fire broke out within this apartment complex, luckily no one was severely hurt or affected by the dangerous flames. Two bystanders having rushed in and got out the anonymous victim. Police is currently trying to track down the person responsible after finding evidence of arson. More details at-" Elle turned off the tv, wanting to hear nothing else. That news report was a strict reminder that she was a target. By who? She didn't know, there was tons of possibilities, governing the work Touya was in. But, there was no way Handsy knew she even existed, they both kept things seperate. Touya never said anything about himself before the league, family, friends, or anything remotely at all that would cause potential harm to Elle. They both knew how easily information could get out, and averted it as best as they could so they could live a somewhat normal life? 'Ha, normal huh?' She thought sarcastically to herself, standing up from the couch before stretching out her limbs, yawning tiredly. She really wished she could just go back to sleep again.
Fatigue weighing her down- She headed into the kitchen, the smell of food hitting her senses as Kirishima stood over the stove, pan over the burner with a spatula in hand.
"What are you making?" Elle questioned him. Kirishima jumped, not expecting the sound of her voice as he looked over his shoulder at her, his shoulders relaxing. "Pancakes." Elle quirked a brow at him, pressing her lips in a thin line. Now, that is definitely something she hasn't had since she was just a little girl, before running away.
"You do know what these are, right?" Elle scoffed, rolling her eyes at the question.
"I have you know, I did have a childhood filled with these." She told him, gesturing her hand to the pan. Kirishima let out a laugh, nodding.
"I figured I would ask, Miss 'I have never had pizza in my life of'-" He stopped, his brows furrowing.
"16."
"16 years! Wait, really? 16?" Elle nodded.
"Yeah."
"What's your birthday? Zodiac sign-?"
"No."
"What?"
"Just no- Rock head, the pancakes." The red head sniffed the air, eyes widening in panic when he smelled burning. He quickly took the pancakes off of the heat, flipping them over only to the edges crisped up darkly.
"Aww man!"
"I vote for those to be yours."
"I already ate lunch at school, it's okay. I will just make some more. I got enough batter for that." Kirishima told her, showing off his oddly sharp teeth. Elle sighed, watching him finish making those two burnt pancakes and setting them onto a paper plate, mentally deciding to himself that he could eat it later, just cut the burnt parts off.
The girl observed him pouring the batter into the pan, careful not to tip the whole bowl over and the fill the whole pan up with pancake batter. He created two more pancake circles of batter, the heat lower than before so he didn't burn them this time around.
"You cook often?" Elle asked him, leaning against the counter, watching the bubbles in the batter sizzle and pop, getting rid of any air pockets.
"Not really. But, I did learn some things from Bakugo. He is really big on cooking."
"Bakugo... Oh, he is the one you said that I reminded him of?"
"Yeah! He is a very manly and cool guy. Not the best temper though, but he is slowly getting better at controlling himself. Once you get to known him some more, you will see." Elle shrugged, deciding to take his word with a grain of salt. This was Kirishima after all, who was literally the definition of 'Friend to the World'.
"After this, I can take you out clothes shopping like Mom was supposed to before she got called in. How about that?"
"As long as it's not too anywhere fancy."
"We ain't rich enough to go to Gucci or something so don't worry."
"I still don't like you guys buying stuff for me." Kirishima blinked a few times, flipping the pancakes over one by one before looking over at her. Elle stared back, her right side gleaming in the light shining in through the curtains of the wind is above the sink. Her hair a marvelous black, but Kirishima could see her roots more clearly then before.
"Didn't you dye your hair?"
"I was gonna wait for Dabi, but you know what happened." Elle told him, her tone having shifted from playfulness to sorrow.
Tsukauchi watched her body language, the sound of her voice apparent, even through the camera, he could feel the emotion she was feeling. Fear. Sadness. Unknown.
This was new information for him, Dabi's natural hair color wasn't black like they always thought it was. He really did meant to hide his true identity from the world.
"Hey, we will figure out what happened soon, alright." Kirishima reached out and resting his hand on her shoulder, smiling softly at her. Elle looked up, taking a deep breath in before releasing.
"Yeah, hopefully.".
---
Kirishima and I browsed through the section of women's clothing, soft music playing in the store as we looked around. I had yet to pick anything out, even after all of Kirishima's fruitless attempts of showing me a shirt or pair of pants- Nothing.
I glanced down at my attire, a baggy long sleeve and mom jeans- Which were expected, these were Haruhi's clothes after all.
I still wore my old shoes though, very dirty and well worn boots that were rip offs off of actual combat boots, they did the trick, kept my feet protected from the outside world. But of course, Kirishima had taken notice and said he would get me new ones as well. At this point, I was about to chuck a ball of ice at his head so he could get the idea out of his head to buy me everything.
I had no money- Scratch that, I think I have 200 yen (roughly two us dollars) on me from my old jacket, I could only buy probably a keychain for that amount of money. Which was not a good thing. Keychains were useless. Unless it was a multi tool attached to it, then maybe it was useful.
I felt the material of a nearby salmon cardigan, 'This is softer than a cloud, damn... Nonexistent.' I thought to myself humorlessly, moving away from the oddly scratching material cardigan, jumping when I felt Kirishima put his hand on me.
"How about this one? It's simple." He asked me, showing me a simple black tee with words on it.
"Don't talk to me until I have had- Kiri, hell no." I dead panned after reading the text. He pouted, a small whine escaping him.
"Aww man! I thought for sure you would like this one!"
"Not with text as annoying at that."
"True true true- Doesn't fit your personality." I rolled my eyes, walking away and rounding a rack of more shirts, surfing through them.
We had been here for around, I think 20 minutes? And still nothing. Haven't even attempted to go and try on some things, I was quickly getting irritated. I was not used to this.
Mom did take me clothes shopping once with Fuyumi, it was to find formal wear for some event that I can't remember at the top of my head. I didn't pick anything out, Fuyumi and Mom having been the ones looking at things, checking prices, and then bombarding them onto me, pounds and pounds of clothing. Rest in peace to my small child body. Crushed under the weight of cloth.
Besides that- I never really learned how to pick out my own clothing wear, when out on the streets we just grabbed whatever we could find, never really fit into a fashion standard, even though we did lean to more darker colors which turned out to be grungy. My eye patch certainly fit in that scene, and when the eye patch with a face on it added more onto it with such a tiny detail, and yet so profound. Sad that I don't have that anymore, it was a pile of ash by now.
After a few more minutes passed, I was about ready to drop kick and leave the store.
"Can we just go? I'm fine wearing your mom's clothes-"
"No. If you are staying with us, you are getting a proper wardrobe. My mom doesn't mind spending money for a good cause."
"A good cause? Kiri..." I trailed off, sighing deliberately as I gestured to myself. "I'm fine with this, let's just go and take a nap."
"Nopeee~!" He popped the 'p' in emphasis, and I could feel myself cringe inwardly. 'I'm gonna drop kick him soon if he don't behave.'.
"Hi, I see that you two have been here for awhile, is everything alright?" I looked over, seeing a male salesclerk next to us, a smile on his face. Kirishima nodded.
"Yeah, just trying to find some new clothes for her." Kirishima said, his hand gesturing towards me. The salesclerk nodded, surveying our surroundings.
"Well, do you have any tastes in terms of clothing? Colors, materials, styles?"
"I don't really care."
"Ah. Follow me." I rose a brow, sharing a small look with my red head companion before we followed after him into a different section, quite different. Drastically different. It was like we just went through a portal and got thrusted into the 2000s of the US.
"Okay, I agree with you." Kirishima told the employee, who laughed.
"I have been here long enough to know which style fits what person. Helped when she said that she didn't care."
"That supposedly ties in with my style-" I began in confusion, cut off by him.
"Yes, clothing is what we use to express ourselves after all."
"Are you sure you are just a employee at a clothing store and not a secret philosopher?"
"I appreciate the compliment, but no, I am not. Just a simple sales clerk who is working day in and day out." We nodded, a few seconds passing before the salesclerk nodded to himself, rubbing his hands together.
"Let's find you some clothes, Miss???"
"Elle."
"It's nice to meet you, Elle. I'm Ren." He led me over to a clothing rack, the style and cut of each item distinct and different but yet similar to others, the color schemes being more dull and less colorful than the section we were originally in.
We looked around for a bit, having picked out a few shirts and two bottoms, Ren even pointing out to me wear the lingerie section was. Which definitely made me red in the face, he was so nonchalant about it. I guess that's what happens when you had to stock said lingerie every day.
I didn't try any of the things on, deciding it was best not to. My body wasn't going to fit in most of these anyway, they were always going to be big on me until I could get some weight on me. To be a healthy person at a healthy weight for her height.
I left to the lingerie section and quickly grabbed what I needed before speed walking back, not wanting to trigger any asthma. I didn't want to go to the er or hospital. I barely dodged going yesterday, I had to be more careful than ever since I was around people now. Who would most definitely force me to go to get treated for whatever.
I threw them into the cart, throwing the other clothes we were going to purchase on top of it so Kirishima didn't see and get flustered again. I didn't want to laugh again.
We checked out and with bags in hand, walked out of the clothing store and headed to the bus stop. Time to go home, I didn't want to spend another hour out here shopping.
I walked onto the bus first, carrying some of the bags with me with Kirishima following closely behind, putting his bus pass in the machine to pay for our ride. I took a seat, the bags resting on top of my feet. Kirishima took a seat next to me, his own bags resting as his feet so they didn't occupy the row between the bus seats.
The bus began moving and I watched the buildings go by, the light flashing in and out when the sun would be blocked between each building or tree along the sidewalk. I closed my eyes, my body automatically moving into a more comfortable position, sliding down so my neck wasn't in such a uncomfortable spot. I didn't plan to fall asleep, but my fatigue caught up with me again.
---
"Sir Sho?" Young Elle questioned her twin as she entered their room, the room she hasn't been in for several days by the expanse of her father telling her to give her brother some space. So she had been sleeping in her older sister's room.
She managed to slip away from her older siblings and caretaker's sight, her father was out doing hero duties so he wouldn't be back for a few hours, she was happy with that. He had taken off because of what happened to speak with any doctors about her brother's condition. He was lucky that he didn't go blind in that eye, there was some damage on the surface of his pupil but it would heal, the rest of it well... Will be permanently scarred for the rest of his life. It may shrink as he ages but that was only a possibility.
The room was dark and dreary, and with what little light she could see, she spotted him on his bed, covers pulled over his head. She frowned, slowly making her way over, as quiet as possible despite the nerves she felt in her system, she didn't want to make him feel worse, she was there to give him the comfort he desperately needed. Because nobody else was allowed to give him that, their own father had only patted his back reassuringly, he needed more than that. He needed to know what she did was because of a problem she had been fighting within herself for so many years- Todoroki Rei still loved them dearly.
That's what Elle wanted to believe anyway, it had been explained to her by Enji briefly, but didn't go into further details. Almost as if out of guilt and shame.
Elle crawled into the bed, dipping under the covers and could feel how warm he was from being under the covers for an extended period, didn't help that the heat from his scar was still radiating. Plus their own body temperatures, one side cold, one side warm.
"Shoto..." She whispered, watching him seem to invert more into himself, his back to her.
"Momma loves us, she didn't mean to-" She stopped herself, hearing the sobs escape from her brother's lips. She stilled, her frown deepening. She decided against what she was going to say next, her young mind clicking into what he needed more than words.
She wrapped her arm around his waist, burying her face into his shoulder as he continued to cry. She didn't enjoy crying, she hated when tears would leak from her eyes and make her cheeks wet, her eyes becoming bloodshot. She didn't enjoy it, so instead of joining in the crying, she began humming, doing her best to calm him down.
She wasn't harmonious, far from it, but this was his sister, his twin. They were always there for each other, they had to be in order to have survived for this long. Even with all of the bumps along the road of the short life they had experienced so far.
His sobs lessened into small sniffles within the next few minutes, his breathing easing as he gripped ahold of Elle's hand, feeling the cold amongst the warmth of his own hand.
"Sa-" Shoto rolled onto his other side, stopping himself from continuing as his one eye came into contact with Elle's. Elle smiled warmly, pushing the covers off of them as she sat up, taking hold of his left hand with her right.
She didn't speak, only nodding to him as a small flame appeared in the palm of her hand, transferring it to his own, the flame dancing against the contrast of the dark room.
"We can make others feel warm, Sir Sho. Everything will be okay." She told him deliberately, her heterochromia eyes twinkling in the light illuminating from the small flame. She placed her left hand over his, distinguishing the flame before lifting it up, having created fog. The fog exasperated into the air, and he smiled at the motion, his twin's presence made him feel much better than before. He grabbed a hold of her, bringing her into a much needed hug. Everything was going to be okay.
That was until a fire broke out half a year later.
---
"Elle. Elle. Elle!" Elle stirred awake, blinking slowly to get used to the light of the outside world. She saw Kirishima in her peripheral vision, seeing the worried expression on his face.
"What...?"
"You were crying, is everything okay?" She furrowed her brows, pushing herself up into a better position as she wiped her eye, feeling the wet liquid on her finger tips. He was right, she was crying.
She closed her eyes, realizing that wasn't no ordinary dream. It was a connection to Shoto. They had finally made contact after so many years of being apart, it's what triggered her to remember that- Remember the moment of bonding after he was burned by their mother.
She wiped away the rest of the tears, feeling her eye patch was also damp from the inside out from her tears. She hasn't cried while sleeping in a long time.
"I'm fine. Just a dream."
"It seemed more than a dream, Elle." She furrowed her brows, staring at him in confusion, "What are you about it? It was nothing, Kiri." The ex-dark haired boy frowned, flicking her forehead. She winced, not expecting the action.
"Don't play dumb with me, Oreo. It's better to talk about it rather than keep it all inside." She sighed heavily, her hand falling to scratch at the back of her neck.
"You aren't going to let this go, are you?"
"Nope."
"Annoying rock..." She muttered to herself, seeing the glimmer of amusement in his eyes for a moment at her remark. She pondered for a moment, what should she tell him? She didn't know if she was talking in her sleep, no indication of that, but she also didn't want to risk being caught in a lie. So with a deliberate sigh of defeat, she leant her head against the cushion of the bus seat, staring up at the ceiling.
"My brother."
"We will figure out what happened-"
"No, another one." Kirishima blinked, baffled and taken aback. 'I thought she said that it was only Dabi and her?'
"Well- We weren't blood related, I wish we were."
"Weren't?" He asked, noticing the past tense.
"I don't know if he is still here in this world, he is in my past now, I have to look towards the future. Make my own identity." 'Wow, I'm really stretching the truth here.'. He nodded, his worry for her still evident as he awaited for her to continue.
"We were as close as siblings, may have been opposites in a lot of ways, and I mean a ton- We still somehow came together as one. Saw each other as family, whenever things were tough or just carefree."
"To this day I still don't know how our personalities didn't clash together, how we didn't end up in horrible fights, how we didn't end up wanting to harm the other... Perhaps- Perhaps because we were already dealing with our own pain already that we just wanted someone to be there for us." Kirishima nodded, her words being imprinted in his memory. Elle messed with her eyepatch, fumbling with her bottom lip with her teeth.
"Half the time I was left wondering why... Why was he seen as the better half? Did I just hold too many problems to be casted out and neglected? Unable to see him and interact with him as much as I used to? Even after what happened to him? Sneaking into his home just so I could comfort him against his father's wishes? Hold him in my arms, telling him everything was going to be alright. When things weren't ever going to be alright." She inhaled deeply, feeling her heart heavy, her skin clammy and throat tightening. She wanted to barf out the contents of her breakfast/lunch. But couldn't bring herself too. She felt so repulsive, found herself trying so hard not to slip and say any information that would lead Kirishima knowing who she was talking about. She didn't know if he knew why he had that scar, that the current Number 1 Hero was abusive and neglectful, she didn't know if he was ignorant to all of that.
"Elle." Kirishima spoke after a short passage of time, lightly grabbing a hold of her hand and raising it up.
"It's okay to feel these feelings, you aren't weak or wrong for feeling them. You are human." He told her, his frown turning upside down into a small smile, his teeth not showing.
"I'm here to help you out, little by little is a lot for you and I understand that-"
"Miyuki." He could feel his heart lurch into his throat, his stomach dropping and his eyes widening. Elle moved their hands, pressing their palms fleshed together. "Miyuki. It's my middle name." Slowly in realization, a big grin spread across the boy's face, his shark like teeth shining and blinding her.
"Really?"
"Yes, really. You are only allowed to call me by it when we are alone, and I mean alone." She told him, her tone shifting into a warning one. Kirishima nodded, feeling the swell of happiness. He found out something else about her, her middle name. Sure it wasn't her first name, but it was still a vital piece of her. It meant something for her to tell him that. He didn't have to pry or go snooping and invade her privacy, she outright told him.
"Then call me Eijirou, it is my name after all."
"Nah, Rock Head is more fitting."
"H-Hey!" Elle covered her mouth to hide the short and small bubble of laughter. He felt relieved, so relieved. But, he didn't notice the private investigator sitting a few rows behind them, disguised as a regular civilian, listening to their conversation.
He pressed against his ear piece, watching at the corner of his eye to make sure the two weren't looking his way as he called in.
"She told him her middle name." Tsukauchi sprung forward, slamming his coffee mug down beside him as his eyes watched the surveillance footage, all rooms empty.
"She did? That quick?!"
"He looked as surprised at it, we can use this to figure out her and Dabi's identity."
"What was it?" The private investigator didn't reply right away, the bus stopping and the two getting up from their seats with their bags, Kirishima sliding out and walked down the row of seats, Elle following after him.
"Miyuki." He whispered as quiet as he could muster, Tsukauchi even barely catching it. The man nodded, impressed.
"Alright, I will send a request in to search the database for any Miyuki's, whether it be first or middle name, hell even last name. It will in handy when her DNA results come back and fingerprints." The private investigator felt the bus move on again, deciding it was best not follow them the rest of the way home, they found out enough for today during their outing, the surveillance cameras will do the rest if something arises.
He didn't answer, shutting the earpiece off and leaning back, enjoying the rest of the ride.
To Be continued
