Chapter 42
Picture of Dorcas in the media above. She's still a fine girl, her character is just not good 🌚🙂
Chapter Forty Two
CYNTHIA
Two hours later, the entire foodstuff in the class has been moved into a truck. Michael's truck has been called back because he couldn't unload most of the things he came with as they are too much.
There are presently two trucks, two buses and some cars in the school compounds. My class teacher is busy checking to see if we are all around and all of us are present including the boys.
They had arrived when we were moving the things into the truck and they had all greeted me. They all looked great in house wear and it was hard for me to stop looking at Michael since he looks so good in his short sleeve shirt and black jean trouser and white Converse.
I had answered all their greetings except Michael's who looked taken aback when I did and I've refused to look at him since then because whenever our eyes meet, I'm instantly reminded of what Dorcas had said.
Over thirty people had put their names down and the teacher has decided that the students should be divided equally between the buses.
I give her the list of people that wants to go and she starts to call us. My name is written first and I'm the first person to enter. As I enter and take a seat, I hear Grace's name and she doesn't waste time in entering and sitting beside me.
The boys names are called afterwards and Michael is the first to enter. As he does, he glances my way but I quickly look out the window.
When I'm sure he is seated, I look at Grace questioningly, "Why are you sitting next to me? Shouldn't you be seated next to your boyfriend?"
"I'm saving you from a tight situation. I'm sure of three guys that are willing to sit next to you." She says just as Peter comes inside and glances my way. He looks at Grace that is seated beside me and for a fleeting moment, I thought he looked disappointed.
"And that's one of them." She announces with a smirk and I raise an eyebrow at her in question.
Really?
Wole has taken the seat next to Femi and I expect Peter to take the seat next to Michael. But he and Michael exchange an unfriendly look and he takes the seat behind him instead.
The rest of the students start to enter and I glance around, looking for John. I then remember that he said he is going with us at the last minutes so his name will be at the far end of the list. He probably won't enter the bus with us.
Dorcas and her friends also enter the bus and I groan. Why do they have to enter the same bus with us?
Cat is the first to enter amongst them and she takes the seat next to Peter. He doesn't hide the fact that he is disgusted and scoots nearer to the window but she also does the same. She starts to talk animatedly but he wastes no time in putting his earpiece in his ears, shutting her out. She pouts and leans resignedly on her seat but with a happy smile.
Seriously.
I shake my head and see Chika who sulkily takes a seat far behind the boys and her friends since the ones right behind them have been occupied. A boy is quick to sit next to her and start a conversation but she gives him a glare and he keeps quiet. I'm very sure if Wole isn't sitting beside Femi, she would have wasted no time in taking his seat.
Dorcas smirks at me as she enters and takes the seat next to Michael confidently. He doesn't seem to notice this as he looks lost in thought, she then places her head on his shoulder and he finally looks at her. I expect him to shrug her off like he always does but he doesn't even look bothered. He looks more resigned look and just glances out the window again.
With a sinking feeling, I look away from them and my heart begins to hurt again.
It really hurts.
But why?
Why am I affected so much by their relationship all of a sudden?
I was never bothered before so why now?
Why do I suddenly feel like dragging Dorcas from where she is sitting and taking the seat next to Michael instead?
I sit there lost in thought and don't even realize when the driver starts the bus's engine and drives out of the school.
"...really trying too hard. What the heck is their problem?" I hear Grace say.
"Hmm?" I reply absentmindedly and she stares curiously at me.
"Something is definitely wrong. You've been behaving weirdly since we spoke with Dorcas and her devilish friends at the restroom." She states and I smile a little.
"Nothing is wrong." I reply, trying to play it off.
"Don't give me that. What's on your mind?" She asks and stares at me intently. I sigh as I know she won't let it go until I give her an answer but I'm not ready to talk about what's going on with me. So, I say the first believable thing that comes to mind.
"Nanny's ex-boyfriend."
"Nanny has a boyfriend?" She asks with an incredulous tone.
I knew that would have her attention.
"An ex-boyfriend." I correct and she nods slowly like she is assimilating what I've just said.
"Well, I'm not surprised. She looks too pretty to have never been in a relationship but why are you suddenly thinking of her ex-boyfriend?"
"He is the chief's eldest son." I respond simply.
"The chief's eldest son? Which chief?" She asks then her eyes widen in realization.
"You mean the chief of the neighbourhood we are heading to? That same chief?" She asks again and I nod.
"Oh My God! This is really huge news." She says to herself then turns to me, "Why did they break up?"
I sigh and knowing I have no other choice, I begin to explain everything Nanny said to me yesterday. It also helps in distracting me from my sudden heartache.
After explaining everything to her, she gives me a confused look, "But I don't get it. He is a chief's son so why is he struggling to meet ends meet?"
"His dad just recently became a chief and I assure you, his chieftaincy has nothing to do with him being rich. I think he was just chosen as the head because he is the eldest. But then, compared to the lifestyle of Tayo and her mother he does seem to be in a better condition." I finish and she nods slowly.
"So, in other words, Nanny's parents stopped her from marrying the one she loves because he had no money and now, they are living off Nanny." She states with annoyance.
"Only her father, her mother is dead. But the thing is, I don't think she is over him yet. She even volunteered to come with us with the hope of running into him." I smile, remembering this morning and she laughs.
"I'm not surprised. I really wish they get back together and wish there is something I can do to help." She says.
"Me too." I reply hopefully.
"Don't worry, I'll pray that you run into him when we get there." She beams and I smile.
"I really hope so."
We continue to discuss about Nanny's relationship and how we'll react if we actually end up meeting the chief's son until we finally get to Tayo's neighbourhood.
We alight from the bus and I immediately start to hear comments from the students about how they are not aware that a place like this is present around here.
"And to think we've passed the road that leads here many times and I've never noticed this place." Grace mumbles as she looks around.
"What village have they brought us to?" I hear Dorcas ask with unchecked disgust and glance at her to see her arms wrapped around Michael's arm. Michael is looking at me with hurt and uncertainty and I quickly look away.
He has no right to look hurt.
Femi is now next to Grace and they are both arguing on whether the neighbourhood can be called a village or not and John also joins me.
I look at the children that are present outside and discover that Nanny is right. There are far more children than the ones I saw the other day.
And although they are outside, only few of them are playing amongst themselves. Most of them look too weak to even take a step.
"I see why you are so intent on helping these children now." John looks at me impressively and smiles.
"I just want all of them to run around freely with smiles on their faces." I reply with a small smile of my own.
"I'm glad I contributed something."
The head of the neighbourhood along with some of the residents come to welcome us and to tell us that canopies, chairs and tables have been set up for us to stay under while we go about what we come to do. My class teacher accepts their greetings and when they are gone, she calls me to the side and together, we oversee the moving of the foodstuff.
Everyone - except the fussy ones like Dorcas and her friends - takes part in moving the stuff, even Grace moves some of them and she seems to be enjoying herself. The boys also carry some of the things and of course I ignore Michael both times he tried to talk to me.
After making numerous rounds of trips to carry the foodstuff and materials, there are three cartons of noodles left. The class teacher left minutes ago to check what is going on under the canopy leaving me alone to supervise the moving of things.
It doesn't look like the others are coming back as they are still busy arranging things so I decide to just carry it by myself. It'll take me two trips to carry them comfortably but I don't want to go back and forth twice so I decide to carry it at once instead.
I place the three cartons on each other and start to carry it but I soon realize it's a mistake because it is so high and I can hardly see where I'm going.
I feel the weight in my hand decrease as someone lift two cartons out of the three I'm carrying. I then look up to see Peter looking at me with an amused smile.
"Why are you carrying more than you can actually carry"? He asks and I blink, surprised to see him smiling and talking. He seems to be in a good mood and I can't help chuckling.
"Maybe it's because I know someone will help me with it." I reply and he raises an eyebrow.
"Is that someone me?" He asks playfully.
"Maybe." I reply with a laugh but his face turns serious.
"You can always turn to me when you need help." He says and before I can reply, he walks away.
When I finally carry the carton of noodles to where everyone is, Grace quickly rushes to me and I see that she is making a video. Some others are doing the same while some are just taking pictures.
"And here we have the brain behind everything that is happening. Her determination is what has given birth to everything you see here today." She grins into her phone and I roll my eyes.
I drop the carton of noodles I'm still carrying to where the rest of the foodstuffs are and give her a dry look.
"Since when did you start making broadcasts?"
"It's just a video." She replies then groans. "Maybe I should just settle with taking pictures." And she starts to snap away.
I sit on the nearest plastic table and glance at the boys. Michael, Femi and Wole are busy discussing while Peter has his earpiece on and is busy pressing his phone.
'You can always turn to me when you need help.'
What did he mean by that?
Maybe you're just over thinking it and there's no hidden meaning behind it, my inner voice says and I nod.
Yes, that must be it.
"Cynthia, say cheese!" Grace shouts and I blink in surprise. She takes my picture and checks it then pouts.
"Ugh, you look pretty but lost in thought." She says at the picture and turns to me. "Are you still thinking about Nanny and her ex-boyfriend?" She asks and I shrug.
I contemplate telling her what Peter just told me and I'm about to do so when a car drives into the neighbourhood. I'm sure everyone's eyes are on the car as it doesn't make sense that someone who lives in this neighbourhood drives a car.
A man comes out of it and he looks to be in his late thirties or early forties. He heads straight to the chief and prostrates to him.
Grace is the first one to speak, "Could that be-"
"-the chief's first son?" I complete and we exchange looks.
"What are you waiting for?!" She exclaims and I quickly straighten up. I confirm that my phone is still in my pocket just in case and head towards the chief and his son.
"Good morning, sir." I say and kneel in greeting.
"Good morning, my daughter." The chief replies. "It was you and that female teacher that came to ask for my permission the other day, am I right?" He asks and I nod.
"Do you need my help with anything?" He asks again and I shake my head.
"I'm sorry to interrupt but I want to talk to him, sir." I say and point at the man that is standing beside him.
"My son?' He asks, a bit confused but I nod with a reassuring smile.
"Dad, let me talk to her for some minutes. I'll be back soon." His son says.
"It's alright. Take your time." The chief answers and waves us off.
I make sure there is some distance between us and the chief before I finally speak.
"I'm sorry to disturb you like this but I just really need to speak to you." I begin and he nods slowly.
"You are the chief's eldest son, right?" I ask and he gives me a skeptical look.
"Yes, but who are you and why are you asking?" He asks and I decide that showing him Nanny's picture might just explain everything.
I bring out my phone and show him a picture of me and Nanny at a carnival we went to. He checks his picture and his eyes widen.
"Rose." He mutters quietly and then looks at me, "She couldn't have given birth to you. Is she your aunt?"
"No, she is my Nanny." I reply and he looks even more surprised.
"You are Cynthia, the five-year old she was taking care of then?" He asks and I smile.
"That was twelve years ago." I reply but he says nothing. He continues to stare at the picture and then finally looks at me.
"But how do you know to approach me?" He asks and I explain everything I know about their relationship.
"That's not everything." He sighs. "It's not something I'm proud of but I was paid off and I accepted the money because I needed it to treat my mom. But I was also threatened. If I had continued to see Rose, I'd be beaten to a pulp and they will make sure I can no longer use my wrists. I couldn't risk it because I love to bake so I had to stop seeing her."
"She honestly deserves an apology because I shouldn't have disappeared like I did. I tried looking for her at your previous place but I was told you moved." He says and I nod.
"I think you should see and discuss things well and maybe get back together because she hasn't gotten over you. I've known her for a very long time but I haven't seen her with anyone else. She still hopes to get back with you." I explain and he gives me a pained expression.
"It's too late. I'm married now with kids."

MICHAEL
As soon as I got to school and had waved to Cynthia and she ignored me, I knew that something was wrong. Especially when she had no issues with responding to the guys' greetings.
Lots of scenarios begin to play in my mind as to why she might be annoyed with me but I can't seem to come up with any since we were cool till yesterday.
So what the hell am I missing?
And why does she look hurt and disappointed in me?
Needless to say I've been thrown off balance since she had ignored my greetings and I've hardly been paying attention to anything.
Dorcas taking a seat beside me in the bus didn't even seem to bother me as much as it would if Cynthia wasn't giving me the silent treatment.
Throughout the ride to the neighbourhood, I couldn't stop glancing at her. She had a discussion with Grace till we got to our destination and whenever her eyes seem to drift to my side and meet mine, she would look away at the speed of light.
When we finally got to Tayo's neighbourhood, I didn't know how to approach her and that decision was finally taken from my hand when John suddenly appeared next to her.
All I could do from far away was stare at them, not even able to get jealous because I don't know why she isn't talking to me. I wonder and wonder again, thinking of what I could have done but nothing comes to mind.
If she had found out about my plan, it's safe to say she would be angry with Peter too since he is also involved but that doesn't seem to be the case.
So, what exactly is the problem?
The teacher asked us to start moving things from the truck and throughout the moving, I tried to catch her eyes but she seemed so focused on the book in her hands that I knew that she was doing it on purpose.
I decided to wait for the right time so I could talk to her but before then, all I did was look at her and follow her movements.
I panicked when I saw her talking to Peter but since it looked like he was just trying to help her, I stopped myself before I made a scene.
Dorcas has since left me to be with her minions, something I was grateful for because she has been discussing all sort of things with me, pretending like yesterday night didn't happen at all. Honestly, I'm worried about her and I hope in the end, she doesn't do anything stupid.
Wole and Femi soon joined me where I was standing alone but I was paying less attention to their conversation. All I could do was stare at Cynthia who is seemingly lost in thought.
What is she thinking about so seriously?
Grace comes to her with her phone and I watch as she starts to make a video with Cynthia but she is not having it.
Again, she glances towards me and when she finds me looking at her, she quickly looks away.
It is at that moment that I knew that I had to talk to her whether she is ready to listen or not. But as soon as I take a step forward, a car drives into the compound.
Everyone attention seems to be on that car because it wasn't part of the vehicle that came from the school with us and we were also confused because I think we all believe that no one in this place drives a car.
A man comes down from the car and he walks towards the chief, prostrating as soon as he gets to him.
Is that his son?
"Wait, so the chief has a son that is well off and owns a car and the chief still lives here?" Wole asks from beside me.
"Why do I feel like it's the chief who insisted that he wants to stay here and not receive help from his son?" Femi replies, pretending to be deep in thought.
"And the fact that he drives a car doesn't make him automatically well off. The car isn't even a new model." I find myself saying.
"Yeah, that's true." Wole agrees.
My mouth almost opens in surprise when I see Cynthia approach them.
"Oh My God!" Femi exclaims dramatically. "Do you think he is like her sugar daddy?"
I raise my hand to give him a smack on his head but Wole beats me to it.
"When will you have sense?" He asks, giving him a disgusted look. "We just concluded now that he might not really be rich and you are saying he is her Sugar daddy?"
I shake my head at him in disappointment, "I can bet one million naira that he can't afford to be a sugar daddy to Cynthia or anyone else for that matter."
"Yeah, we get the point." Femi grumbles sarcastically and turns with a glare to Wole. "And I was only thinking out loud, stupid. It doesn't exactly mean he is actually her sugar daddy."
"How about you don't think at all?" Wole replies him and I almost chuckle despite the situation.
I ignore their banter and watch Cynthia and the man as they discuss, Cynthia's phone is in his hand and I just had to control my mind before it starts thinking weird things.
There's no way they actually have that relationship.
They continued talking for a while but I got distracted when the teacher asked us to come and take a seat under the canopy and get ready to start giving out the things we have to the people here.
We all move towards the canopy but I keep glancing at them, wondering what they could be talking about.
When she finally comes back and walks towards Grace, she looks so disappointed that I am on my feet and ready to ask her what the problem is.
But when I'm just a table between she and Grace, I hear their little exchange.
"How did it go?" Grace asks her.
"He is married now." Cynthia sighs and Grace also looks disappointed immediately.
Who the hell is that man and why does he have so much effect on them?
Why do they look so sad that he is married?
Is there really something between them?
The teacher calls for her just then and I return to my seat, watching her from a distance.
I don't even realise a man is standing in front of me until he clears his throat loudly.
"I'm sorry." I apologize with a small smile. "Good morning."
"You like am?" (You like her?) He asks with a knowing smile and then gestures to Cynthia.
I nod in response and he grins.
"You don tell am?" (Have you told her?)
"No, I haven't told her."
"Why? You wan make them steal am from you?" (Why? Do you want them to steal her from you?)
I glance at her table at that moment and immediately see what he is referring to with John making a show of taking her pictures with a young girl she is attending to.
I don't even know that I was frowning until the man spoke again.
"You con dey spoil face for here." (You are now frowning here.) He teases.
I exhale a deep breath and just give him a small smile. The man seems to be in his late forties or early fifties and he seems to be a very jolly man. Apart from the fact that he looks lean for a fifty something year old man, he still seems vibrant.
"Don't worry, I will tell her." I don't know why I said that but I find that I might actually mean it.
"Do quick o. The girl fit you pass the one wey dey snap picture." (Do that quickly o. The girl suits you than the one snapping her picture.)
I burst into loud laughter then and he smiles too, looking quite pleased with himself. He might not know it but our little conversation makes me feel a bit better since I have arrived in school today.
I ask for his name, confirming it is on the list I was presented with and asked about his family. After taking all those information, I go to carry two mattresses for him. One for he and his wife and one for his two grandchildren that is staying with them.
I try not to be annoyed at the fact that his children knowing very well their condition of living here still thought the right thing for them to do is to burden them with the responsibilities of their own children.
I just don't understand why people could be like this.
"Goodluck o." He winks as he moved to the next table with a brighter smile, moving the mattresses along. It's so obvious that he is happy with what he has gotten.
"Thank you." I reply with my own smile before turning my attention to the woman who is now standing in front of me.
"How old are you?" She asks without any preamble, taking me aback.
Who is asking the questions here?
"Why are you asking?" I ask in return, holding back my laughter. For some reason, I know her response will be a funny one.
"I have a cousin that is very fine and she has front and back." She starts to explain and I nod, encouraging her to continue. My laughter is bubbling in my throat, threatening to come out anytime soon.
"And you know you are a very fine boy too, you will look good together." She finishes and I can't help it anymore, I burst into uncontrollable laughter.
When she starts to laugh along with me, my already subsiding laughter regains its strength again.
I wasn't sure what to expect from the people here when I knew I would be conversing with them so I could give them what would be enough to live well for a while.
But I sure as hell didn't know I was going to enjoy it and it would put me in a good mood.
The woman smiles at me and brings out her phone and looks at me expectantly, "So what's your phone number?"
I return her smile and begin to wonder how to get myself out of this because I am definitely not giving her my number.
I think today is going to be a very long day.

CYNTHIA
"It's too late. I'm married now with kids."
My heart breaks for Nanny immediately I hear those words from the Chief's son. She still hasn't gotten over him but he has moved on with his life.
"I thought she would have done the same so I decided to move on. I never knew she-" He stops talking then, looking really hurt.
I give him a sad smile, "I really think the both of you should talk to each other. You need to apologize to her and she needs closure so she can finally move on from you".
"Let me give you her contact." I suggest and he returns my phone. He then brings out his phone and dials her number as I call the digits for him.
"I'll make sure to contact her."
"You should." I reply, returns my phone into my pocket.
"Thank you for approaching me." He gives me a small smile and I smile back.
"Anything for Nanny."
I head towards the canopy after that and see that some of the students including Grace are now seated in front of tables with sheets of papers and pen in their hands. When she sees me approaching, she looks at me eagerly.
"How did it go?" She asks as I get to her.
"He is married now." I sigh and her face falls.
She opens her mouth to say something but gets interrupted.
"Cynthia, where have you been? Come over here." My class teacher calls out and I move away from Grace to meet her.
"Here are the clothes Grace brought for the children and here are some others too. The children will be directed to you to pick some clothes and you will be in charge of them." She says and hands me a sheet of paper. "These are their names and numbers. Make sure they all get the best suited clothes irrespective of their gender." She says and I nod.
I head to an empty chair with the sacks of clothes that have been given to me then I glance at the others and see that they've already started giving the items.
The first child I see in front of me is a small girl that looks cute but unkempt. Her hair looks untidy on her head and I immediately feel something should be done about it.
"Grace!" I call out and she looks at me from where she is busy talking to a woman.
"What?!" She calls back and I decide to just head over to her.
"I need your bag." I say and remove it from her shoulder. She says nothing and continues speaking with the woman while I go back to my seat with the bag. I check through it and see a comb and a hair tie.
Her bag turns out useful after all.
I comb through the girls hair amidst her protest and cries and I suddenly feel the flash of a phone camera. I look up to see John snapping me with a grin and I give him a curious look.
"What are you doing?" I ask and he shrugs and snaps again.
I smile and finally tie the girls hair with the hair tie. She now has tears in her eyes and I give her a small encouraging smile.
I bring out my phone then show her herself with my phone's front camera.
"Look how beautiful you are now." I tell her and she smiles.
"You like how you look?" I ask and she nods.
"Good. Now lets get you some new clothes."
I drop my phone and start to check through the clothes for her size.
I spend the following two hours trying to make the children look better and to find them new clothes, it is satisfying but also stressful. I'm busy looking for the clothes of the twenty-sixth child when one of my classmates suddenly rushes to me.
"Cynthia, you have to come fast." She says urgently and I glance up at her.
"What's wrong?"
"One of the children, he is injured in the woods. I found him when I was going to ease myself and I can't carry him by myself." She adds worriedly.
I sigh and look at the child that I'm supposed to give clothes to, smiling reassuringly at him.
"I'll be back soon." I say to him and he nods. Then I turn to the girl, "Lead the way."
She wastes no time in turning around and I follow her, hurrying behind her. We soon enter the woods and she starts to glance around.
"Can you remember where you saw him?"
"Of course. Just follow me." She replies and we walk farther into the woods. After some minutes of walking and not getting to our destination, I turn the girl to me and give her a wary look.
"Aren't we there yet?" I ask and she nods but without looking at me.
"We are almost there." She says then continues to walk. I sigh and continue to follow her but then she stops all of a sudden.
"Are we there now?" I ask and she nods. I look around but there is no sign of an injured child.
I turn to tell her what I've just observed when Dorcas and the Cat girl appear. Chika doesn't seem to be with them.
Where did they even come out from?
"I told you she's a good choice and she'll succeed in bringing her." Cat smiles.
"You were right, Cat. I guess she acts really well." Dorcas replies.
"What's going on here?" I direct to the girl that brought me here but she doesn't look at me.
"You've done a good job. You can go now." Cat says to the girl and she immediately leaves.
I turn to do the same but Dorcas is quick in turning me around. I remove my arm from her grasp and scowl at her.
"What do you think you are doing? Deceiving me so I can come into the woods?" I ask and she laughs.
"Oh, I just wanted to find out how much my actions can affect you." She responds and I raise an eyebrow.
"So that's what this is all about? Being so affected by my words that you want to prove me wrong." I ask mockingly and she smiles smugly.
"Don't get all cocky yet. We haven't even begun." Cat replies.
I chuckle, glancing at the both of them. "Really now? It'll be better for you both if you don't try anything stupid, or you will regret it." I warn.
"Aren't you really proud just because you know some karate moves?" Dorcas asks, smiling and moves closer to me, "But what will happen if you don't have strength to make any moves?"
Dread starts to fill me at that moment and before I can completely make sense of what she just said, my nose is covered by a handkerchief and I start to feel dizzy.
I struggle against the person that is covering my nose but my efforts grow weaker and I eventually pass out.
That's the last thing I remember until the sudden feel of water on my face wakes me up again and I blink at the rays of sunlight that is directly on my face.
My whole body feels weak and with alarm, I discover that I'm tied to one of the trees in the forest.
"Wakey wakey." I hear someone say faintly as I struggle to keep my eyes open.
Chika's face comes into focus and she is smiling, I glance beside her and see Dorcas and Cat. They also have satisfied smiles on her face.
"We unanimously decided that you should be tied up in the forest forever. You can get eaten by a wild animal for all we care." Dorcas announces and my eyes widen.
"No." My voice comes out squeaky and they burst into laughter.
"No." Chika mimics and brings her face closer. "If you make it out of this alive, I'll consider you one very lucky girl but I hope by then, you would have learnt not to mess with us."
"I guess she will consider me a worthy enemy now." Dorcas adds with laughter and the others nod in agreement.
"Should we gag her?" Cat asks.
"She is probably too weak to call out for help but just in case, you should." Dorcas replies and Chika brings out the handkerchief she used to cover my nose before. She then covers my mouth with it and I'm left feeling very helpless.
"Oh, she looks so pitiful." Chika says as she stares at me and I start to feel drowsy again.
"Good for her. Let's go girls." Cat replies, an unfeeling look in her eyes.
They all wave goodbye at me with smiles and I watch helplessly as they walk away.
The effect of the handkerchief starts to kick in again and I welcome the darkness that closes on me the second time.
