Chapter 11 |☆》Modus Operandi
"He's not your concern." Chris remarked, though deep down he thought, "He should've been back by now."
"How am I going to take that gem?" Carina thought before Simon saw her and smirked.
Chris saw his father teleport with the gem and stood behind Carina. "It's rude to eavesdrop." Simon whispered behind her ear, when Carina turned around to face him, he grabbed her by the neck, choking her. Chris teleported to where they were. "You know the old saying: Curiosity killed the cat."
With a snap of his fingers, Chris teleported Carina out of Simon's vice grip and took the gem back. Carina coughed, as she tried to breathe after the chokehold. Simon gave a psychotic smile as he slowly clapped before he walked a couple of paces forward.
"Very good," Simon said sarcastically, "you finally had the gull to play with your daddy." Then he dropped the smile to put his sneer in place as he ceased the slow clap. "Playtime is over." He glared with a menacing tone.
Warlin saw this and decided to take matters into his own hands.
Chris was more than ready to defend Carina when Simon's hands glowed dangerously to release a blast of great magnitude until a collar appeared around Simon's neck, nullifying his powers as the glow faded and went out in a flash and Simon disappeared before the flash faded.
They shielded their eyes from the blinding light before it died down. The handsome Venusian looked at Carina with concern. "Are you alright?" He looked at her verdant eyes, though by the looks of it, she looked like a scared cat with those eyes.
"I'm ok." She let out a cough, "Thank you. I just need some fresh air." Carina said as she cleared her throat.
"Here." Chris gave her a white handkerchief.nShe held the thin piece of fabric. "You need this a lot more than I do." The Venusian said in a non-committal tone as she held a firm grip on the handkerchief.
"You have no idea." Carina thought with malicious intent. "Thanks for saving me."
"No need to thank me." Chris gave a smile before he left her alone to find Tony. Carina uncrumpled the handkerchief to find any trace of him in the thin fabric. A drop of saliva, sweat, a strand of hair, anything that she could use to her advantage.
"Nothing. Drat!" Carina's eyebrows furrowed.
Chris had been looking for Tony, calling out to him, until he turned around to see him nonchalant. "There you are! I thought Simon did something to you."
"I was in the men's room." He furrowed his eyebrows, giving an irked tone.
"Listen, I'll be participating in the Redemption Round tonight." Chris informed him as he put a hand on his shoulder.
"Good for you." He commented before Chris walked away, Warlin shapeshifted back to his original form.
Have fun while it lasts.
Stella woke up from the bed, and shifted to the side to get out of the bed. While she walked she heard a loud cough coming from the next room. She opened the door to see the sick patient.
Joon was given cough syrup, courtesy of the pretty Tunisian nurse.
"Thank you." Joon said after he drank the medicine.
"It's my job sir, no need to thank me." Nour said while the sick patient looked at her.
"I'd be grateful any day if I get to see someone as nice as you." Joon said, giving a genuine smile.
The Izarian found the exchange endearing. "Aw, that's so sweet." Stella thought while Nour blushed, feeling flattered. She then spotted Stella peeking at the door. "Oh, you're awake."
"I didn't want to interrupt. How long have you been dating?" Stella asked as she walked towards them.
"No no no, we've just met." Nour clarified.
"Like almost an hour ago, I think." Joon added.
"I noticed that you're wearing an EMCuff, looks like the same one a girl was wearing. Her name's Haeji." Stella mentioned.
"So you already know my sister. She's fighting to get the prize money for my treatment." Joon replied.
"I know, I talked to her a while ago," The Izarian commented in her southern drawl, "I offered to remove the EMCuff on her wrist, but she was reluctant to do so. Let me let you in on a little secret." Stella leaned in to whisper in his ear. Joon listened in on what secret the space cadet could give, his expression was casual then his eyebrows raised a bit.
"You can actually do that?"
"With the right frequency, you can open it. It's not that hard." Stella said, just as she was about to leave the infirmary, she turned her head to look at Joon. Then she waved goodbye to the sick patient. "Get well soon."
"Hopefully." Joon thought to himself.
Stella stepped out of the infirmary, while she saw the Amoebian pacing back and forth, muttering to herself. "Do you want anything?"
The Amoebian looked at her colleague, first with a relieved expression, then her usual indifferent demeanor. She walked up to her, as she craned her head to look at Stella. "I want to leave this place and track down Carina. You already had your fun." Micah turned away before she opened an electronic flipbook. "We don't have time to waste."
Blue and Suzanne entered backstage to search for the room the flyer mentioned. The Velociraptor looked around backstage and spotted the announcers. "Do you know where room 1A is?" She inquired, staring at the announcers before they pointed to the room where Suzanne was standing in front of.
"Found it." Suzanne peered through the room, perusing the room before Blue entered.
"There is no one here." Blue said, but the announcers heard a sharp grating noice coming from the Velociraptor. The hostess entered backstage, carrying the forms for the vacant boss positions. When she entered the room, she didn't expect the volunteers to arrive early.
"I apologize for the delay," she passed the papers for them to sign, Suzanne used her claws to pinch the corner of the paper while Blue held the sheet of paper in her human form, "I didn't expect for you to arrive so soon." She passed the pen to Blue.
"About that, I've been meaning to ask. Can I actually boss people around?" Suzanne inquired, brandishing her fangs as an intimidation tactic.
"You are your own boss once you step into the platform to antagonize your adversary." The hostess implied while she looked into Suzanne's red eyes.
"But can I still boss people around?" The dark Indoraptor insisted while she bore into the host's beady eyes before blinking.
"If you have your own lackeys, then yes." The hostess replied.
Blue signed, then passed the pen to Suzanne. The Indoraptor scrawled, signing the form, entertaining the idea of having free food as consolation.
"Welcome to the crew!" The hostess greeted the new bosses, giving them the V.I.P. passes. Blue and Suzanne wore the passes on their necks.
"So when are we gonna get free food?" Suzanne asked while Blue gave an annoyed glance.
"What about the 3 bowls of blood and the bloody shake that you drank a while ago?" Blue asked her while Suzanne shrugged.
"What can I say? I get hungry when I'm nervous." Suzanne admitted.
Scale brought a box of cheese pizza with cucumbers. With the first bite he chewed on the contents then gobbled the first three slices while the space cadets were down the hall as they split up, Stella headed to the food court while Micah stayed and interrogated bystanders about the criminal as she showed the photo of the suspect.
Carina wore her sunglasses and ate a tuna sandwitch before she spotted the Izarian at the food court, asking random strangers. Stella revealed the mugshot of Carina's original form before the bystanders shook their heads and walked away. Carina sipped on a soda, inwardly scoffing at the Izarian farm girl and her poor interrogation methods, before she saw Stella coming closer.
"Excuse me ma'am, have you seen this delinquent?" Stella asked her directly without having any idea that she was asking the same person who she was looking for. Carina lowered her sunglasses and looked at the old photo of her original form, she thought that the I.B.I. would've at least updated the mugshots by now.
"Haven't seen her."
"Oh well, have a nice day." Stella walked away from her as the usurper slurped on the soda.
Scale was taking a bite of the last slice of pizza by the time Stella came to ask him about the usurper. "Sorry to interrupt, but have you seen this person by any chance?" Scale looked at the screen to see a humanoid feline with grayish blue fur and green eyes, though she had a short curly mane.
"No." Scale responded.
"Ok, stay safe." Stella said as she was about to walk away.
"Wait!" Scale blurted before Stella turned over her shoulder to look at the nervous Reptilian. "How long has she been missing?" Scale asked, though he was having second thoughts about it.
"She's incognito. Do you have a lead?" Stella took out a pen and an electronic flipbook as she opened an application to take notes.
"I-uh. No, to be honest. If you need someone to help you track her heat signature, I'm here." Scale then shut his eyes and cringed at his suggestion. Track her heat signature!? What was I thinking?
Stella considered his offer. "Is not actually a bad idea. There aren't many species with infrared vision." Scale opened his eyes, registering her response. "It could be useful in finding criminals in abandoned sites. Do your species use electronics?" Stella asked him.
Micah considered the current method of interrogation time consuming. It was much easier sending an alert on a massive scale where civilizations with technology could have quick access to information to alert the masses about intergalactic criminals and rogue machinery with advanced intelligence, instead she had to ask random strangers who had no clue what they were looking at or couldn't grasp the severity of what the usurpers could do.
Her frustration was more evident when one of the guards scratched their heads at the inquiry. The Amoebian walked away as her stubby legs moved rapidly in a blurry motion.
Sajid was confused by what he just witnessed before his coworker returned from the women's restroom. "Did I miss anything?" Sara asked.
"Nah, not really." Sajid replied.
Stella wrote down Scale's information and contacts in case she needed his aid, the Izarian waved goodbye at the Reptilian. The Dimension Guardians were halfway done with their lunch when Stacey prodded Sora to spill what was bothering her.
"She was warning me about something." The Arivex stated.
"Like what?" María asked her, as her brown eyes were focused on her.
"That I wasn't the only one in danger and one of us had to stay as a distraction." Sora said as she heard the conversation.
"That's kinda cryptic." Zack commented.
"But who are we supposed to watch out for?" María asked her.
"That's what I'm trying to figure out." Sora said as she looked at Violet while the lady in lavender was conversing with the sailor.
Stella had shown Carina's mugshot to Baci Llus, "No, I haven't seen her." The blue skinned extraterrestrial looked at the usurper's original profile. "Why are you even showing her original form if she could be usurping anyone for that matter?" He questioned.
"It contains all of her information including a copy of her original DNA. The teleporters and scanners have the generic codes of the inhabitants archived. An usurper can be traced by their original DNA, any usurper can copy the victim's DNA and RNA, but their nucleus can be identified, even if the usurper has altered their appearance. Usurpers are like counterfeit currency, a copy. The database identifies the DNA and compare the nucleus to the original. If the individual has been weeded out as an usurper, an alert is sent." Stella explained.
"Instead of showing the fraud, point out their modus operandi." Baci Llus suggested.
"They act similar to hackers that swipe data and web accounts. Only thing they want to swipe is your blood, saliva, follicles, mucus, anything to obtain your DNA and use it to their own benefit." Stella mentioned.
Tantetra heard something similar while Micah explained it. "The usurper is capable of acquiring your powers with a sample of your DNA. The usurper could use your elemental powers to cause a disaster, an eyewitness can identify you and accuse you of damaging private property despite that you weren't there to begin with. Is like identity theft, but far worse, they could use a strand of your hair as incriminating evidence, by the time a case is formed against you the usurper moves on usurping the identity of the next victim. That's why it's crucial to capture one to prevent further confusion with a sample of their original blood."
Tantetra looked at the screen of Carina in her original form with a copy of the blood sample and genetic code archived.
"I can manipulate blood. As for the other information provided, I do not know of your human or rather your world's technology and terminologies." Tantetra explained as she looked at the Amoebian whom she had mistaken to be a human child.
Micah exhaled an annoyed sigh, "Very well." The Amoebian walked away to regroup with her colleague. "The usurper could sneak in from under their noses and they could care less." Micah had walked past Carina without her knowledge.
Fortunately, she had taken a sample of Micah's saliva to test it. She opened the slot of the atom-morpher, and inserted the sample. Waited for the weapon to load as she adjusted the percentage. Carina entered the ladies' room and locked the stall, as the weapon finished loading she shot herself.
Chris walked around the stadium as he memorized the area, observing for any exits. He could teleport out of the stadium out of his own volition, though he prefered not to attract much attention to himself. So he entered the men's restroom.
Carina opened the compact mirror inside her purse to see the results. She looked just like Micah, from her short dark purple bob to her white skin and beady eyes. After closing the compact mirror she could feel her black skirt falling off, her white blouse flopped down below her pelvis and her boots crawled up to her thighs. Upon waddling out of the stall she rolled down the collar of her boots and adjusted her outfit.
The Venusian had exited the men's restroom while Carina walked out of the women's restroom nearly at the same time.
As she looked from side to side she saw Chris's blue suit as he walked out. "He looks a lot larger from here." The usurper kept her distance as she had her eyes on the Venusian.
