quize
She wasn't sure what to do with the hollow place in her chest that only continued to grow and fester the longer she sat idle. Her hands itched to work, to do something productive with her time instead of feeling as though she was wasting away.
"How dare she treat you so horribly! They did not even say goodbye!" Estelle ranted as she passed up about the house packing away things. "They just up and left as though we had never meant a thing to them before!"
The bang of her steps echoed as she stomped up the stairs in an angry march. She made a clatter as she forced things into boxes, making a mess as she packed her things.
"We came all the way here just to see them, yet they do not pay us the respect of simply alerting us that they will be moving," Hugo muttered in distaste, clicking his tongue in annoyance at their old friends as he passed them by with arms weighed heavy with a box of his belongings.
"It is not their fault they had to leave so quickly," Marion sighed. "We are doing much the same."
"We are doing no such thing!" Estelle shrieked as she came stomping down the stairs with one of Marion's trunks fully packed. "We have told people we are leaving, we have told them why; we are not just leaving without a word like those cowards!"
She groaned, watching as her daughter disappeared back upstairs in a flurry. They refused to let her handle anything, telling her she deserved the time to relax instead of rushing around like she normally did. It was rather annoying, embarrassing even, that they treated her like an invalid that could not handle herself. They acted as though she could not do her share with high emotions, when she wanted nothing more than to be doing nusy work to help them instead of sitting around doing nothing like they insisted.
Marion sighed and bounced her leg in her seat agitatedly, trying more than anything to forget the way that she had been so betrayed, that she had told her to go away. She could not get the image of her standing their glaring in such anger and hate out of her head.
It tormented her, seared through her chest leaving behind only the wish that she could go back, pretend that it had never happened - prevent it from happening! Marion would have done so many things differently if she had known that this would be the outcome. Because it had only been about two months since the accident and only a few weeks since the incident that marked their departure from Rochester. A slaughter of horrible men that had been the cause of so much pain and heartbreak had been the perfect excuse for Estelle to loudly declare to their neighbors and acquaintances that it was no longer safe to live here with such a madman on the loose.
The families with so many ties that they could not leave envied them in their ability to flee - not knowing that the danger had already passed.
And so the story was that they wpuld return to Europe as the American police could not handle the capture of a monstrous individual that showed no mercy. A movers was ready outside, collecting the boxes and and trunks that Hugo carried from the house. They would be taking an uncomfortable voyage by ship, one filled with gaudy humans waving about money as they bragged about being able to afford first class on a new liner.
The Dupuis had payed for three cabins, first class, and would no doubt have to deal with the annoying individuals that tried to outdo their bank accounts.
She felt as though she would be sick at the thought of it all, just sitting here thinking of it all made her stomach turned in a way she did not think physically possible for her kind.
She stood to her feet in one swift motion, brushing out her clothes to free them of wrinkles before she moved to the through the house with purpose, grabbing her purse and the papers from the dining room table.
"Where are you going?" Hugo asked as he burst into the room, Estelle close behind as she stumbled after her uncle.
Marion rolled her eyes. "I am going to see Vera since I have nothing else to do it seems."
They winced, Estelle leaning into her uncles side as he stuttered over his words. "Look, Mari, I get that it-"
"Hugo," she interrupts. "I understand. Merci."
He smiled, Estelle coming out with a skip to her step as she darted to her mother.
"Be quick, maman! We will have everything finished by the time you return!" Estelle claims, hugging Marion tight before she retreats back upstairs to her packing.
Shaking her head, Marion leaves the house in a determined manner, foregoing a coat in her haste to move as the rain hit the umbrella that Hugo handed her on her way out. She wanted to be fast, getting this done with quickly as she had already had many moments in which she shared tearful farewells with the human woman.
The door was openned for her beforee she had the chance to knock, Vera grinning at her as she through her arms around the vampire.
"Oh, why am I not surprised to see you!" The woman teased, leaning away to let Marion in.
"I can never get enough of your friendship," Marion enlightens. "But I am here for business this time, I swear."
Vera eyes her curiously. "Business?"
"Yes, yes, important business."
The human hums before guiding her to the kitchen where Henry sat in his high chair munching on a few cut grapes. Marion placed a kiss to his head as she paced, sitting in a nearby seat.
"I want to give you my house," Marion announced.
Vera gasped, dropping into the seat across from her. "That is not funny, Marie!"
"I am completely serious! I have the papers here and just need you to sign them so that they may be notarized," Marion explained, placing the papers on the table to show the other woman.
"Oh, Marion we could never accept that!" Vera gasped, shaking her head in her vehement refusal. "That is too much even for you!"
"Oh, but you must! The bank would only sell it to another and return to us more money that we do not need," Marion sighed dramatically, working hard to persuade the woman into accepting. "If we signed the house into your name then it will be yours and not a single cent will be owed the bank."
"That sounds real keen, Marie, but it's too much," the human argued, wringing her hands in her dish towel.
"Please, Vera! I have already set up the furniture the way you like and stocked the wardrobe with fancy dresses for evenings," she cried, reaching out to stil the woman's nervous fidgeting. "You'll have more spending money if you no longer need to pay a monthly rent, and Henry will get the house in the will as his! Oh, Vera you will have so much more room for your family!"
"My husband will never want to just accept something like this," Vera shook her head sadly, frowning at the thought.
Marion pouted. "I understand if I am being too forward, but I only wish to make your life the best it could be for yourself and your family. If I could I would give you much more because you deserve the utmost happiness in life."
Vera smiled then, a thing so bright and real. "I am happy. The happiest I have ever been. To have such a lovely family and such great friends-" she stops then, her eyes becoming distant "- oh but how I miss Rose. I wish she was here."
She felt it like a stab to her chest, a dig in her heart that worked to slowly rip it from within the safety of her ribs.
Smoothing her thumb over the back of Vera's hand, Marion gave the human a sorrowful smile. "I am sure she is okay, wherever she had gone away to."
"How can you be so certain?" Vera looked at her hopefully.
"Because Rosalie -" the word burned her throat "-is a strong woman that would never give up no matter the cost."
It seemed to ease the human's mind as she sat back, a soft hand falling to her stomach as she sighed. Marion's gaze shot down to her stomach, eyes wide as she realized what they had not noticed for so long.
"Vera! Are you. . . ?" Marion exclaims in her happiness.
The woman nodded, a cheery grin bursting across her lips as she gave a joyful giggle. Vera beamed at her, glowing in a way that was not noticeable before. How motherhood could look so wonderful on a woman was extraordinary, for Vera was radiant as she held her still flattened stomach possessively and smiled.
"Merveilleux! Vera this is excellent news! You must accept the house now, as a gift from me!" Marion jumped to her feet excitedly. "Oh, how I wish I wa here longer to shower you in wonderful gifts! You must promise to move in with haste!"
Vera laughed. "Marie! You must calm down! It is too soon to be so excited."
The vampire stilled before dropping to her news in front the human. "Accept the house please, Vera. If not for yourself then your children."
The human pursed her lips, turning her attention to the window where you could see their broken fence and patchy from lawn.
"Okay," she breathed, voice cominf out in a breathless whisper as she slowly began to nod, a smile fighting it's way onto her lips. "Okay, we'll take it, we'll move in!"
"This is wonderful! I will have to step into the shops before we leave to order some things for the little one!" Marion announced. "I'll see that someone comes to move the beds into storage until they are old enough to be used."
Vera stood, shaking her head. "That would be completely unnecessary, Marie! Your generosity knows no bounds!"
"Allow me this! Consider me the rich aunty that will spoil you and your children!" Marion said, smiling down at Henry as she did so.
Vera shook her head. "Not too much, Marie. I don't want them to be little brats."
Marion scoffed. "Never. They will be perfect angels."
The human sighed, shaking her head as she carefully signed the papers, trusting Marion explicitly to not scam or doing something equally as horrible.
Taking the papers from the table, she placed them back into her purse carefully and prepared to leave once more, fighting back tears as she knew this would truly be the last time she saw her friend - at least for a while.
Vera seemed to be thinking the same as she furiously wiped tears from her cheeks. She sniffled, forcing out a smile she walked around the table to reach Marion.
"I'll miss you so much," the human sobbed, gripping the brunette in a tight embrace.
"I know, dear, but it will not be the last you hear from me, I assure you," Marion reassured, returning the embrace as tightly as she dared. "I will try to visit as much as possible."
Vera chuckled. "I'll hold you to it, Marie. My mailbox better be bursting with letters of your European adventures!"
"I will hardly be having adventures, dear, but rest assured that I will write you of the monotony of my daily life," Marion grinned, a playful thing that caused the other woman to laugh again.
"Don't forget me, alright? I know I'm not that interesting but don't forget me."
Marion pulled her back into a hug. "I could never forget a soul as good as worse, Vera."
It took the pair a few minutes longer to reach the door promises and assurances being shared between the two as the swore to keep in touch. It was odd for Marion, to have a human friend to keep up relations with when it had always just been her family.
Standing at the door, holding Vera's shaking hand, Marion rested the openned umbrella against her shoulder as the rain sounded behind her.
"Promise you will let me know if you need anything, my friend," Marion urged. "I will always do what I can to help you, simply let me know."
Vera nodded, agreeing for the sake of agreeing as she waved Marion off, silently crying as she watched her go.
Marion had to fight back her own dry sobs as she left. She knew she would do anything for Vera as perhaps ons of her only true friends in this world. But leaving was necessary because this place was only a reminder of her, of Rosalie and the life that she could not have any longer and the love that had been lost to her.
For their to be something extraordinary to happen in New York was a foolish thought as nothing was left here for the Dupuis family.
Marion just couldn't wait to leave Rochester.
