Chapter 24: Getting Home - Part 1
"Are you sure you don't want to stay with us, hun?" Wyatt's mother asked Harper .
"Thank you, but I won't be staying with anyone until I get my siblings back." Harper replied.
The woman before her nodded, "Well, if you bring them here, I'm sure we'll be more than happy to take you all in."
Harper smiled, "Thank you, miss."
" No problem, hun. Here, " She handed Harper a necklace, "It was Sofia's. Wyatt would've wanted you to have it. For luck."
Harper almost started crying as she took the necklace from the older woman's pale hands, "You... Thank you."
The woman smiled, "You remind me of Sofia. Always so humble and grateful. "
Harper smiled and put the necklace around her neck. It was beautiful, with marbled beads and small crystals that reminded her of stars. Without thinking, she wrapped her arms around the woman in a hug.
The woman laughed, "You're very welcome, dear!"
Harper pulled away and smiled before grabbing her bags off the floor, "I will consider your offer thoroughly. Thank you for letting me stay here."
" Anything for the girl Wyatt protected. " the woman smiled and waved. Harper waved back before starting her long journey home. Wyatt's mother had been kind enough to take her about an hour out of town and give her things like d and water. She also gave her the address of a few family members who said they were willing to take her in for a while.
Pulling up her hood, Harper started walking, wanting to get as far as possible. She knew it would take a while, but she had to walk through about 3 states in 3 weeks. It would be hard, but worth it when she could warn her siblings.
Harper walked along the side of the interstate, hoping it could lead her to her destination. Whenever she saw one of those familiar black cars, she would hide behind things laying near her. She had also figured out how to control her weird dream travel thing, so she was able to tell her siblings to get packed.
Cautiously Harper ducked behind a pillar holding up a bridge as a black car drive past. By this point, she knew exactly what licence plate to look for, since they had been dumb and made all of their numbers the same thing. She watched it drive past before she kept walking. As she walked, a car pulled over and rolled down their passenger window.
"Hello there!" The driver called to Harper .
"Uh... hi?" Harper replied slowly.
" Are you a criminal or something? "
"No, but a few people are looking for me. It's complicated."
" Where are you going? Maybe we can give you a ride. "
"We?"
The back window on the passenger side rolled down, revealing a familiar face, "Need a lift, Harp?" Bex asked laughing.
Harper grinned, "Yes please!"
Bex opened the side door and Harper got inside. "What are you doing?" She asked, "Did you walk all the way from your house?!"
" No, a lady dropped me off an hour out of town. I'm trying to get back to my old house. What are you doing all the way out here? "
"I live around here."
"I thought you went to my school."
" I'm guessing Holiday told you that? " Bex sighed, "Sadly, I don't. Whenever Holiday invites me somewhere, she says I'm a 'school friend' for some reason. "
"Well, she's kind of insane, so I'm not that surprised."
"I really hope you're joking."
"I wish." Harper sighed, "Anyways, do you think you could take me to Oxford?"
" that's where you're going? Merindy lives there! "
"So Holiday lied about them too?"
"I guess. " Bex looked at the driver, "Dad, can you take us to Merindy's house?"
Her father smiled, "Sure, Bex."
There was silence as they drove until Bex finally spoke, "Why are you hiding?"
" Many reasons. "Harper replied,"Care to be a bit more specific? "
" Well, who are you hiding from? "
"Holiday and her dad."
Bex frowned, "Holiday really is crazy?"
"Well, considering the fact that she told me she knew she was a psychopath, I'd guess so."
" What did you do to make them chase you? "
Harper thought for a bit before replying, "It's a two piece thing, I guess. First of all, I learned I was part of a government experiment before I was born, and the people involved in it are kind of mad that I figured it out. Also, I may or may not have killed my dad in self defense."
The two of them froze. "You... you did what?" Bex asked.
" I'm not proud of it. But he killed Wyatt, and was aiming his gun at me. What else was I supposed to do? "
"I... I guess that makes sense." Bex muttered.
Harper felt tears stinging her eyes as she thought back to when Wyatt died and the funeral. " sorry if that makes you not trust me. But I had too. "
Bex whirled towards her and put her hand on Harper's arm, "Of course I trust you! I believe you had a legitimate reason for doing that! I just can't imagine you actually doing it..."
Harper reached into her bag and pulled out a funeral bulletin. On the front was a picture of Wyatt. "Trust me, I wish it was my imagination."
Bex stared at the booklet before wrapping her arms around Harper. Tears started leaking down both their faces. "I'm so sorry,
Harp." Bex said.
Harper said nothing, but she appreciated the gesture. They were already taking her a fifth of the way home by driving her to her destination, and Merindy lived there, no less. Smiling, she wiped her tears off her face and looked over at Bex. "You know, even when you're sad, you still can make people happy." Harper told her friend.
Bex smiled back, her watery eyes shimmering, "Well, I'm glad someone thinks so." She wiped her eyes, " Can we talk about something less depressing? Please? "
Harper laughed, "Well, first off, what's your phone number?"
