Chapter 22: Coming clean - Part two

A/n: So, yeah, I'm back for a bit. I finally got the app to work, so I was able to write while I was gone. Also, as you'll be able to see at the end of the chapter, some were way longer than the other ones, which was mostly because of I couldn't find a great place to stop. I also won't be doing a/ns since this part of the story is important. But, enough talking from me, I hope you enjoy.

Before she could second guess herself, she pulled out her phone and texted Bailey.

If you never see me again, I'm sorry. I love you all.

She shoved her phone in her pocket again and watched a man walk over to Wyatt's window, which he hesitantly rolled down. "Hello, Wyatt." The man said.

" Davidson. " Wyatt replied, "What's this about?"

" Smuggling government property. "

"I'm not smuggling anything. I'm taking Harper to a friend's house to help with school work."

"Dr. Hyens is the one who called us, actually."

" Dr Hyens? " she asked, remembering seeing that name on the papers in her father's office, "Who's that?"

The man looked at her for a few seconds before speaking, "Unlock the car."

Wyatt did as the man asked, and suddenly a man grabbed her from behind. "Hey!" She exclaimed, trying to shake him off.

" What are you doing?! " Wyatt asked.

"You should know, Wyatt. You helped with the volunteer testing."

A sharp pain pricked her arm for a second before fading. " No! " Wyatt shouted, "Are you crazy?!?"

"Oh don't worry, she'll be fine," the man said, " We've spent the last thirteen years modifying and perfecting the serum. The last 2 months have been a complete success. "

"You don't know how it'll react to the experiment!"

" We modeled it after the experiment, Wyatt. "

"Still!"

She tried to break free of the man holding her, but to no avail. His grip on her was too strong. "Let go of me!"

Wyatt turned towards her again before pushing his door open and running around the back of the car towards her. He was stopped, however, by another man. "Alright, we can do this two ways. The easy way," the man grinned and pulled a gun from his pocket, " Or the hard way. "

Wyatt looked back and forth between the gun and Harper. Slowly, he nodded, and the person holding her set her down. She walked with the front of a gun pressing into her back until she was at Wyatt's side. "Alright, get in our car. We'll take your car back to your house, Wyatt." The two of them nodded and obeyed.

When they got in the back of the car, Wyatt put his hands on her shoulders. "Harper, are you okay?" He asked.

She pointed at her arm, "I think they injected something in my arm, but otherwise I feel fine. Just tired."

Wyatt grabbed her arm and looked at it for a few seconds, "That's not good..."

" What do we do? "

Wyatt sighed, "What they say. There's nothing else we can do at the moment."

Harper nodded and they stopped talking as two men got into the front. No one spoke as they drove through deserted alleys and past destroyed buildings. Whatever had happened there, she was certain it was bad.

They drove for about 20 minutes before stopping in front of a small building. "This is it?" She asked quietly .

"No," Wyatt replied, "From here, we walk."

Sure enough, when the men opened the car doors, they put bonds on her before leading them away from the crumbling structure. They walked for a ways before stopping in the middle of nowhere. By now, she was so disoriented she wouldn't have been able to lead them back to the building they had parked at, and she was tripping over her own feet. Wyatt seemed to notice, because he wrapped an arm around her to keep her from falling.

"Here we are," the man said, walking over to a tree. He pulled out a card and the tree scanned it. Soon a panel lifted up and moved away, revealing a bright blue light and a staircase. The man walked inside, and the gun in her back forced her to follow him. Slowly, the two of them descended the stairs.

The stairs led to a white hallway with blue lights overhead. A few people walked through the halls in white suits and holding clipboards. When they saw her, they stopped walking, but if that was because she was their "project" or because she couldn't take five steps without stumbling she didn't know. A large door was at the end of the hallway, and it reminded her of the front door of her house.

"Go through," the man said when they reached the door.

" Uh, how are we supposed to? " Wyatt asked, "You deleted my profile, and Harper's never been here."

" Go. Through. "

The end of the gun prodded Harper's back again. "Wyatt," she whispered, causing him to turn to her and see it. Slowly he turned forward again and walked forward, keeping his arm around her in place.

Hesitantly, she put her hand on the panel, hoping with every fiber of her being that it wouldn't open. Just her luck, after a few seconds, it slid open. After a nervous glance back at Wyatt, she took a shaky step forward, glad she had someone supporting her as she walked.

"Took you long enough," a voice called from her left. Turning towards him, she suddenly didn't appreciate Wyatt's arm around her when it kept her from punching her father.

"Sorry, they weren't cooperating as much as you expected," the man said.

"Actually, I knew full well she wouldn't come easily," her father chuckled, " We've been living together for a while. "

"Shut up!" She hissed, causing her father to chuckle again.

"Yes, I'm not surprised it took you so long. I just wanted to see how long it would take you to convince them to come."

"Threatening to kill people isn't 'convincing ' them," Wyatt pointed out.

her father shrugged, "I don't care how they do it. I just want my jobs done. Then I can continue experimenting and learning how to fix the world."

" The ends don't always justify the means. " She said as she tried in vain to break away from Wyatt.

Her father looked at her for a few moments and frowned, "You read the papers, didn't you? "

"Lots of them. I know what changed after Subject 124 and why I even exist if that's what you're asking."

Her father put a hand on his forehead and shook his head, "That was not meant for you to read."

" Because you know it's wrong? "

"Because you would make incorrect assumptions."

"So, the fact that the paper literally said that you guys were killing volunteers and then decided to kill unborn children means that my thinking this entire thing is wrong is an incorrect assumption?"

He sighed, "Wyatt, are you still going to stand by what you said before?"

Wyatt nodded, "I'm not going back on my terms, Dr Hyens."

She frantically looked between her father and Wyatt. "You're Dr Hyens?!" She exclaimed, staring at her father, "Of anyone to decide killing babies is ok, it was you?!?"

Dr Hyens sighed and shrugged, "As I said, I just want to get the job done."

" YOU KILLED 316 PEOPLE!!! " She yelled, tears of betrayal rolling down her cheeks, "AND 192 OF THEM HADN'T EVEN BEEN BORN YET!!! AND YOU WANT ME TO BELIEVE YOU'RE DOING THIS 'FOR THE GREATER GOOD '?!?!"

" It is, Harp-"

"DON'T. Don't call me Harp."

Hyens sighed, "Ok, Harper, but this is for the good of humanity. We can save so many people!" He smiled when she didn't say anything, "Think of it this way: there are 5 people working on a train track. 4 are working on one part of the split, and the final person is working on the other. In the place where the tracks connect, a train is approaching the four workers, but you're standing by a switch that will put the train on the track with one person. If someone had to die and the choice is to kill one person for the survival of 4, or kill 4 people for the survival of one, which would you pick?"

"Well," she started, " What happens when that one person is your mother? Father? Child or sibling? Best friend? What if the choice is saving your wife or saving a group of random strangers? What would you do then? "

"What needs to be done for humanity to survive."

" So you'd kill 4 innocent people? "

Hyens nodded, "Yes. Would you be brave enough to make that choice?"

" No. I would be brave enough to jump in front of the train. " she said boldly, causing everyone in the room to stop what they were doing.

"That wasn't an option."

" You said that someone had to die, right? That someone can be me. Jumping in front of the train would stop it, or at least give the people on the tracks time to get off. If you really wanted humanity to survive, you'd be willing to sacrifice your own life for anyone, no matter how many it was. I don't care how self absorbed or humble you are, you aren't the only one who can help everyone.

"Here's another scenario: you're a police officer. Someone that you're trying to arrest shoots at a nearby partner, and you can push him out of the way in exchange for your own life. Wouldn't you do it? It's common sense! If it was a child, I would feel even more responsible to save them! But you think that if you can get to the criminal, it doesn't matter how many people for along the way. Because you'll seem like a hero to those who don't know what you did to get there."

"You came up with this scenario rather quickly." Dr Hyens noted.

" Well, it's not like I've been in that scenario one of two times already. " she replied sarcastically, finally letting Wyatt keep her still.

"And what decision did you make?"

" If I had been there in person, I wouldn't be standing in front of you. Both times. " she added, remembering how she probably would've died if she really was outside with Bailey all those nights before. "Sometimes you need to sacrifice your life for the good of others."

" With that mentality," her father pulled a gun out of a holster and aimed it towards Harper, "would you be willing to sacrifice your life for our experiment? "

Wyatt stepped in front of her, "Oh, that's not happening."

Hyens sighed, "You're a good man Wyatt. Don't throw it away."

" What are you doing? " she asked nervously.

"If Harper can be bold enough to jump in front of the train, I'm sure being willing to do the same wouldn't be throwing my life away." Wyatt replied, ignoring her question.

" What are you doing?! " She repeated.

"This is a bad idea," Hyens took a few steps towards them.

" Maybe. But at least it's also a good one. " Wyatt answered.

"What are you doing?!?!" She yelled.

Wyatt looked over his shoulder at Harper's worried expression and smiled, "Sorry, Harp." He whispered, "But I know you'll help."

" No no no no no!!!! " She cried, her vision blurred by tears.

"You may regret those words soon, Wyatt." Hyens said casually, not hearing what Wyatt had told Harper.

"I don't so." Wyatt replied, looking back at Hyens.

" You should. "

There was a bang, and the world went into slow motion as Wyatt fell onto the ground. A small, bullet shaped hole now showed in his chest, and his eyes were glazed. The world was deadly silent, and no one moved. It was as if the only living things in the world were Harper and Wyatt. Or rather, the only moving things. Because of the two of them, Harper was the only one breathing.

When Wyatt hit the ground, everything rushed back to normal speed. Harper stared at Wyatt's unmoving body before looking up at her father, who was reloading the gun. In a burst of fury and adrenaline she ran towards him, using one arm to push his hand away and keep the gun away from her. With the other hand she pushed him backwards before grabbing the handle of the gun, jerking it from Dr Hyens grasp. Whirling around, she held the gun up towards the stumbling man and fired.

Her father looked up at her for a few seconds before collapsing. All the anger and fear building up inside her vanished and was replaced with shock and terror. Trembling, she dropped the gun, letting it fall to the floor. When she looked up, everyone else in the room had either left or were running towards the door.

Still in shock, she turned and looked back at Wyatt's limp form. Tears falling down her cheeks, she gasped as she knelt down and grabbed his cold hand. Releasing a sob, she curled into herself, caring more about the uncle who was there than the father who was around.
