The Honeymoon

No, it's not the type of chapter you're thinking about. Instead it is simply a cute chapter for the sake of being cute.

***********************************

A salty sea breeze brushed across Carter's face as she leaned against the railing. The ocean spread out before her, a never-ending landscape of slate-blue. Below on the beach people were already setting up for a long day of tanning, sandcastle building, and swimming. Out in the water, surfers sat astride their boards, hands brushing over the sea as if they could feel the call of a good wave.

Behind her, she heard the rustling of blankets. She turned and saw as Donovan shifted, his eyes closed against the sunlight. Smiling, she crossed the room and perched on the edge of the bed. Still half asleep, he rolled towards her, his fingers reaching for her. Carter ran a hand through his hair and kissed the side of his face. He smiled, eyes still closed as if he were afraid she was a perfect dream that would disappear.

As she continued to kiss his face, the smile grew and he slid his hand onto the back of her neck, pulling her towards him. Before they could get completely entangled, there was a knock on the door.

"Go away," Donovan growled at the unknown intruder.

"I ordered breakfast."

"Not hungry."

Laughing, she slipped free of his hands and padded over to the door. She peered through the keyhole. Seeing the hotel employee raising his hand again, she opened it.

"I'll take it in," she said, taking hold of the service trolley with one hand and easing it inside. "Thank you."

She handed him a tip and closed the door. She heard the toilet flush as she pushed the trolley right against the bed. Donovan walked out of the bathroom wearing a pair of joggers, his hair a tousled mess that Carter felt the urge to dig her hands into to. Donovan eyed the food but didn't touch it, instead climbing onto the bed.

"We were interrupted," he said, kissing her.

"The food is hot."

"You're hotter."

Carter laughed, but placed a hand on his chest, forcing him back. He scowled in annoyance and she found she very much liked the look on him.

"I've been up for an hour and I'm hungry."

"You could have woken me up."

Carter shrugged. "You looked peaceful."

As Carter went to grab a plate, she winced and retracted her injured arm. Donovan frowned.

"How is it doing?" he asked.

She nodded. "Only stings. As far as bullet wounds go this was minimal."

Still, Donovan gently held her arm, inspecting the bandage and the stitches beneath.

"It's all okay."

"Good."

He handed her a plate and poured himself a cup of coffee. When Carter had eaten enough that she would be content simply picking at the rest, she spoke.

"Since we are officially married, I think it's time that we discuss the things that annoy us about the other person."

Donovan raised his eyebrows at this declaration.

"And what annoyance might you have with me?" he asked.

"For starters, I'm annoyed that you can assemble a gun faster than me."

Donovan grinned. "Don't beat yourself up about it. I have been assembling guns years before you. If you had started at the same time, you would be faster."

Carter scowled making Donovan shake his head in amusement.

"Still," she said. "It annoys me."

Donovan nodded, conceding to this.

"Okay, well I am annoyed with how sometimes I will look at you and completely forget what I was thinking, or about to say."

At this Carter twisted her lips to the side in concern. "That is a problem. Is it best if you stop looking at me altogether?"

"I'm not sure that would help our marriage."

"Fine, then you have to get used to it."

"If I must. I guess I have our whole lives to do so."

Carter popped a grape into her mouth, brow wrinkled in thought.

"I find it annoying how women find you extremely attractive and are always drawn to you. Now that you're my husband I know it will be more annoying and I will want to hide you away."

Donovan leaned back against the headboard, nodding as if considering this.

"What if I got a tattoo across my chest that said 'property of Carter'?"

Carter lifted one questioning eyebrow. "Why would you ever be shirtless around them?"

"Good point. Across my forehead then."

"That wouldn't do for undercover work."

"True. Well, there is always this." He raised his left hand, displaying the gun metal band.

Carter let out a sigh. "I guess that will do."

"On the subject of too much outward attraction, I find it annoying that men look at you and when they do I know what they are thinking and want to bash their heads in."

"Yes, well if it helps, I feel the same way. I'm yours and yours alone."

"That does help."

Carter smiled at him, then dropped her gaze. Donovan cocked his head, his eyes narrowing at her.

"One thing that I find annoying," Carter said, the teasing note in her voice gone. "Is the fact that now that you are truly mine I feel that if anything happened to you it would be as if someone ripped my heart from my chest."

Donovan stretched out his hand and cupped her cheek.

"It is no different for me," he said, his voice low.

They held each other's gaze for a long moment.

"Another thing that annoys me," Carter said. "Is how I want to kiss you all the time."

The edge of Donovan's mouth curled, the intensity of the previous moment tucked away.

"I can see how that would be a problem at work. Is it really all the time?"

She nodded. "Constantly."

"Like now?" he teased.

"Right now. If you don't kiss me now I might die."

"We can't have that now, can we?"

As Donovan gripped the front of Carter's shirt and slid her towards him, she laughed, the sound getting trapped between their lips.

***********

"I'm still amazed you have never been in the ocean," Donovan said from the other side of the bathroom door.

"Well, Captain was more of the go hiking for vacation type of father." Carter stared down at herself in the bathing suit. "I don't understand why we are even going to the beach. Why not spend the entire time in bed?"

Donovan chuckled. "Because you have never been and we are right next to it and I think it's something you need to experience."

"If you say so."

She closed her eyes and gripped the edge of the sink.

"Are you ready?" Donovan asked, knocking on the door.

Carter stared at her reflection and shook her head, completely embarrassed at herself.

"Why don't you head out and I'll be there in a second?"

There was a pause and she could picture Donovan's puzzlement.

"You sure? I can wait."

"Go. I know you haven't been in the water for years and you're itching to go. I'll be right behind you."

Again there was a gap before Donovan spoke. "Okay. You sure you're all right?"

Carter rubbed her eyes with her fingers. "Yeah, just need a minute."

Even from beyond the door, she could sense Donovan's reluctance to leave. After a minute, she heard him walk out and close the door behind him. Letting out a breath, Carter cracked the door opened and peered out. The bedroom was empty and she hurried out, snatching her phone from the nightstand. She sat on the edge of the bed, her leg bouncing frantically.

"Hey, girly, I didn't expect to hear from you," Maggie said.

"I know. It's just I needed to talk with someone. I feel uncomfortable." She looked down at her exposed stomach, arms, and legs. "I'm in the bathing suit you got me and...am I supposed to be showing this much skin?"

It was Maggie's turn to laugh. "Yes, that's usually how one looks in a bathing suit."

Carter shook her head. "Captain would have killed me if he ever saw me in this when I was younger."

"Well, he's miles away and you're married now. It's okay."

Carter stood, chuckling. "Yeah, we'll see how Donovan feels about it. Thanks."

"Of course."

The pair hung up and Carter went back into the bathroom. After another minute of contemplating whether she even wanted to leave the room, she did. She made it out of the hotel without any encounters but that's where it stopped. As she walked out onto the sand, she felt the weight of a few interested gazes. The intensity of them made her feel as if she were being stalked and the agent in her was put on guard.

As she cut around lounging sunbathers, she searched the waves for Donovan. Children chased each other in the surf and body-boarders coasted on the wave tops, sliding into the sand. Carter stopped halfway to the shore, her gaze traveling over the chaos of motion.

"I'll have one of those," a female voice said nearby.

To her right, Carter saw a line of girls all in bikini's, resting on their elbows, their attention trained on the water.

"I just want that one," another girl said.

Curious, Carter looked for what they were gazing at. Coming out of the water, running a hand through his hair was Donovan.

Carter couldn't blame them, he was more toned than he had ever been and all the boyishness in his face was gone, leaving behind defined handsome features.

"To war, ladies," one of the girls said.

"May the best one win."

As a unit, the girls all rose to their feet, adjusted hair and bathing suits as they moved towards Donovan. Part of Carter was amused. Then the reality of Donovan not just being her boyfriend but her husband hit her in a new way and she lost all sense of amusement.

As Donovan moved up the shore, he scanned the area, searching for Carter. Before he could find her, the group was upon him. He tried to sidestep them, but they moved as a collective barrier.

Seeing a damsel in distress, Carter moved in for the rescue. She rounded the group and took up a spot at Donovan's back without his notice.

"Hey, handsome," she said.

Just her voice managed to ease the tension in his shoulders. He spun around, grinning.

"You look like you know how to assemble a Glock 19 handgun in under a minute," she said.

As Donovan smirked, the girls around him frowned in confusion.

"I always thought the Sig P226 was better," he said.

Carter took a step forward. "Really? I always thought that was a little bit like a kid's toy. Its velocity is nothing compared to the Glock."

Donovan was the one to take the next step forward.

"I'm able to hit a target dead center from a hundred yards with no problem."

Carter looked him up and down with a predatory stare. "That is impressive. Military training?"

"Marines," he said.

Carter's face fell with disappointment. "That's a deal-breaker."

"Oh?"

"It's not for me," one of the girls said behind him.

Donovan showed no sign of hearing.

"The Marines are an honored group of elite soldiers, you sure it's a deal-breaker?"

Carter shrugged. "My father said I could never date one. Only a Navy SEAL."

"Technically, we both fight for the same cause, that must mean something."

Donovan stood only inches away from her. The pair were face to face, on full display for the group of baffled girls.

"You have a good point. I always did tell him I would run away with a Marine boyfriend."

"Boyfriend is a title I don't much care for," Donovan said.

One of the girls stepped forward. "I can promise you that I don't want titles."

Again the pair seemed deaf to the interruption.

"Husband on the other hand," Donovan said. "That could be something I could work with."

The girls all exchanged startled glances.

"That's a big commitment, are you ready for that solider?" Carter said.

"You're the girl I have been looking. I will marry you right here, right now."

Carter cocked her head, pondering the offer. "Okay."

When she smiled, Donovan returned the look.

"Are you serious!?" one of the girls said.

She was ignored.

"Is it too archaic to carry you off?" Donovan asked.

"What are those muscles for?"

Donovan scooped Carter off and left the collection of girls behind.

"Have fun?" Donovan asked when they were a few feet away.

Carter held onto his neck. "Yes. We should come to the beach more often."

He gazed down at her and all that was revealed in the bathing suit.

"No, we're not coming back. Unless you plan on wearing coveralls."

Carter laughed and kissed him. "I guess that means we're spending the rest of the week in bed."

Shots fired!

(Cause I'm not throwing away my shot, no I'm not throwing away my shot, Hey yo, I'm just like my country, I'm young, scrappy and hungry, And I'm not throwing away my shot.

Sorry, my mind took me away)

Okay, let's focus people! We have things to discuss! And when I say 'things' I simply mean one and that's the chapter. So discussion time and when I say 'discussion time' I merely mean if you want to share your thoughts about it I would love to hear it! 💬💭🗯

I know this is probably not the honeymoon chapter you were expecting but let's face it I will never write the one that you are thinking about cause well that's not what I do. I hope this didn't disappoint.

The scene at the beach, yeah I stole that straight from the latest season of Veronica Mars. The thing is I hate how they did it in the show cause it was dirty and lacked any sense of wit, so I took the idea and wrote it in a way I thought would make it more interesting.

What did you think? 💬💭🗯

Also can you really blame those girls, I mean I would probably start drooling if I saw Donovan walking out of the ocean looking all hot and stuff.

If you felt it was worth it then go ahead and vote, comment, follow. If not then well...psssh! I don't need your love and devotion...*cries in corner*
