Chapter 51
Even though some of y'all are rude and ungrateful af about how much I've updated, I've decided to be nice and update ONYX anyways.
(That's a lie I'm just wasted. Yes it's in the afternoon for me. No I don't accept any judgement about this. In my defense, I was only trying to get mildly tipsy)
((Okay fine I was trying to black out fuck off))
When I turn around, I see Thane standing with Leo and ten of his warriors. Thane's face is completely emotionless in his trademark bored expression.
"Good to know you've missed me while you've been gone, mate," He says sardonically, and I can see his magic swirling around him in shades of white and gray.
Finn steps in front of me protectively, and Thane looks at him in disgust. "Let me guess? Finn? Savior of the Rogues? Stealer of women?" Thane laughs darkly.
"You're not taking her," Finn says lowly.
Thane raises an eyebrow. "She's not your mate, pup. She's mine."
I step out from behind Finn. "You killed Greyson," I say contemptuously, and I can feel the Darkness begging to be released, just like it had that night. "You may be my mate, but I will never go back with you."
Thane narrows his eyes at me. "Onyx, you don't want to do this. You know I can defeat you easily. Do us both a favor and come willingly so I don't hurt you."
My magic swirls around me, dark and deadly. I wouldn't be able to hold it back. I didn't even want to. "You can't hurt me ever again, Thane. You know why?"
"Do tell, Onyx," He purrs, and his magic is just as present as mine, although I know he's only showing it to frighten me, not because he can't control it.
My lips curl into a cruel smile. "Because I'm not fighting the Darkness anymore."
The grass around us instantly blackens, and I hold my palms out, letting my magic suffocate all his wolves. Black fog covers them, and before they can react, they pass out. At this point, my Darkness is in complete control of my actions. Before, it was hard for me to wield it, requiring immense effort and focus, but now, it had a mind of its own.
Thane shields himself with his own magic, and looks at his sleeping wolves in shock. "What have you done, Onyx?"
I laugh venomously, and drain the life from more trees, and my magic is no longer swirling around me- it's everywhere. I can feel power, so much power coursing through me, I know I could kill him without even trying. "Isn't this what you wanted, honey?" I say sweetly, and black mist is coming out of my eyes just to relieve the excess amount of power. "You wanted me to use the Darkness- and now I am."
Thane sends shards of his magic at me, but the Darkness takes care of it so I don't have to, instantly dissolving his magic like it was nothing more than smoke. "That's the best you can do, mate?" I sneer, and throw a ball of dark energy at him.
His magic slices through it, and white mist collects around my feet. He's trying to paralyze me. "Not this time," I hiss, and my magic tears his apart. I use his own move against him, and black mist gathers around him. Just like other night, he's able to shatter it, but more black magic replaces whatever he breaks, and soon, he's too enveloped by it to fight it.
He falls to the ground, and he's completely paralyzed, my magic wrapped around him like a cocoon. Unlike his pack members, I don't want him asleep yet. The Darkness wants to hurt him first. I'm not sure where it ends and where I begin, but we both want the same thing.
I walk over to Thane, who's eyes are frantic. I crouch down over his body. "What's wrong, Thane?" I coo, reaching my hand out to run a finger along his face. His eyes are terrified, and I relish in it. "Don't like having to lay here, completely helpless? Tell me: How does it feel knowing that I could kill all of your men right in front of you, and there's nothing you could do to stop me?"
I ease up on the magic blocking his mouth so he can respond. "Onyx, don't. This isn't you," Thane pleads, and he sounds pathetic.
I laugh darkly. "I remember me begging for Greyson's life like it was just yesterday. How quickly you forget what you did to me. Perhaps I will kill Leo first, before the rest of your men. Don't worry, I'll save you for last. I want you to watch as I drain the life from them."
He begs for their lives, but I don't care. The Darkness wants blood, and so do I. He has to pay for what he's done.
I lean over Leo's sleeping body, lifting him up by the collar. "Should I put my hand through his chest and rip out his heart?" I muse, and Thane yells at me to stop. "A bit brutal for my taste, but you seem to be fond of this method, so perhaps I should give it a try."
"Please, Onyx," He begs. "I'll do anything you want."
His words make me chuckle. "History really does repeat itself. You're right, I should rip out his heart. If anything, just to make this day perfectly symmetrical to that night."
"Onyx, don't do this," I hear Finn say quietly, and his hand touches my shoulder. The Darkness doesn't like it, and throws him back, paralyzing him too. "You don't have to do this, Onyx."
"Yes I do!" I hiss, and glare at him. "You know what he put me through! I won't be able to sleep at night until he's dead. But first, he will feel the same pain I do."
I begin to drain the life from Leo, and it feels good. I block out Thane's protests, and knowing I'm hurting him makes this feel so much sweeter.
This was the first time I had ever stolen the life force from a person, and it felt better than I could have ever imagined. The magic was sweeter, darker. And I liked it. More than that: I needed it.
"Onyx," Finn says softly, so soft it catches my attention. "I love you."
I stop draining Leo and whip my head around to look at Finn. "What?" I ask, confused by his gentle words. The Darkness is angry, it wants me to kill Finn right after I drain the energy from Leo and Thane. But Finn's words press pause on my pursuit of death and destruction.
"I love you, Onyx. Please don't kill him. You won't be able to live with yourself if you do, and I can't live without you," His voice is calm, gentle.
"I-" I shake my head, trying to clear my thoughts. The Darkness is pushing me to kill Leo. My mind feels foggy. "No... I-I have to kill him. It's the only way I stop hurting."
"The pain won't go away if you kill him, Onyx. It'll get worse. Killing him won't bring Greyson back. Just let go of the Darkness, okay? You're not thinking clearly," He coaxes me. "Look at Leo, okay, Onyx? You don't want to hurt someone innocent."
I look down at Leo, and he's barely breathing. "Oh my God," I whisper, horrified. The Darkness dissipates around me. I release Finn, but Thane and his men are still trapped. "What have I done?"
Finn rushes over to me, and pulls me into his arms. "Onyx, my love, I need you to stay with me okay? Use your magic to heal him, okay? Everything will be alright, I just need you to stay with me."
Finn lets me go, and I lean over Leo, willing my magic to heal him. Darkness swirls around him, but this time, it's gentle. I hear him snore, and I exhale in relief.
"I could have killed him," I choke out, mortified.
"Onyx, let me go," Thane calls out calmly. "Let's talk about this."
"Shut up!" I yell back, and paralyze his mouth. If I hear him say one more word, the Darkness will come back, and this time, I won't be able to hold it back. Maybe I should succumb to it, let it kill him so I don't have to. He didn't have the Darkness coursing through his blood when he killed Greyson, that was all him. All my mate.
Finn takes out his phone and calls someone. "Dean? Come to the lake right away. Bring the others."
He hangs up, and I go over to Thane and lean over him. His eyes are resigned, defeated. "I should kill you for what you did to Grey," I say lowly, and his eyes widen slightly. "If I was stronger, I would. I hope one day, someone hurts you as badly as you hurt me."
And I really should have killed him. Whatever stupid phrase they say about revenge being wrong is just that- wrong. There would be no greater justice than to avenge my friend.
I wave my hand over his face, and he goes to sleep with the rest of his men. Before he does, his eyes are defeated, resigned, scared. I never thought I'd see the day an Alpha cowered in terror from me.
"What now?" I ask Finn as I get up and stand next to him, looking at all of the bodies sleeping. My magic is still active in them, and more patches of grass die to keep it that way.
"Dean will come and erase their memories," He answers, and my eyebrows raise. "It's his Gift. He can moderate memories. He doesn't use it often... but I think this is a suitable enough occasion."
"He did it to me the first time you took me, didn't he?" I ask quietly, and he hesitates before nodding.
I should be mad, but I don't feel anything besides loathing for myself. "I would have killed him if you didn't stop me," I state, my stomach turning. "I would have killed them all."
I start crying, and Finn pulls me into his arms. "Shh, it's okay, Onyx. Everything will be okay."
Sobs wrack my body, and Finn rubs my back soothingly until the others arrive. "Holy fuck, what the hell happened here?" Dean asks, and I wince.
"I need you to go through their memories and wipe what happened here. Alter it so that they think they didn't find the cabin, and decided to camp out here for the night," Finn instructs Dean, who looks bewildered.
"That could take a while. How long until they wake up?" He asks.
Finn looks to me, and I nod. "They'll stay asleep for as long as you need," Finn tells him, and he sits next to the closest wolf, putting his hands on their head and closing his eyes.
Ronin, Kallista, Astrid, and Will walk over to Finn and I. "What happened?" Ronin asks quietly, and I cringe.
"Thane and his men showed up. He came for Onyx, and... She stopped them," He says, neglecting to mention that I almost killed all of them.
Ronin nods. "Are there any I should check for injuries?"
"The one over there," I say and point to Leo. "I think I healed him but..." My voice trails off in guilt.
Ronin smiles kindly. "I'll go take a look, it's no problem." He and Will walk over to Leo, talking too quietly for me to hear them.
"Finn, go with them," Astrid commands. Finn hesitates, looking at me, conflicted. "She's fine," Astrid says impatiently. "I'll look after her, go."
Finn nods once and goes over to Will and Ronin. "What happened, Onyx?" Astrid asks quietly once he's gone.
"I almost killed them all," I admit shamefully. "Finn... He stopped me. It was almost too late..."
Kallista shrugs. "You should have just killed them. It's not like Thane doesn't deserve it for what he did to you."
My mouth drops open as Astrid nods. "They don't deserve your kindness, Onyx."
I shake my head. "Thane doesn't. The others are innocent. I can't punish them for what Thane did."
"You feel guilty," Kallista says suddenly. "You regret hurting them."
I nod, and my eyes fill with tears.
"Oh, Nyx," Kallista says sympathetically, and pulls me in for a hug. "Don't feel guilty. Nobody died, they'll go back to Blue Moon tonight none the wiser about what happened. No damage done."
She pauses. "You're scared. Why are you scared, Onyx? We'll protect you, no one will ever hurt you."
"It's not me I'm scared for," I say as I pull away. "You don't get it. I lost control. I could have murdered twelve people. Even worse, I wanted to. If Finn didn't stop me-"
"But he did," Astrid interrupts. "So let it go. You can't beat yourself up for this. Thane put you through something traumatic. Your response to seeing him was completely understandable. Nobody blames you for it. Not Finn, not me, nobody."
I don't believe her. Finn probably hated me for what he saw. There's no doubt in my mind that I terrified him. He was good, pure- all the things I am not.
"I'm glad you got to confront him," Astrid says to me, her voice terse. "Not everyone is lucky enough to confront their demons like that."
But she was wrong.
My demon isn't Thane.
It's me.
