Chapter Two: Try to Sleep
WeiZhou was busying around the house like a concerned mother. "Jingyu, where is he going to sleep?" He came back into view, hands on hips, looking at Jingyu with an eyebrow raised.
"I was thinking he could sleep in our room, just for tonight. And tomorrow we can buy some stuff and make the guest room more kid-like." Jingyu said, bouncing the sleeping boy on his arm.
"And what about Jackson?"
Jingyu shrugged, turning to Jackson with a smile. "The guest room or the couch is fine." Jackson grinned back at Jingyu.
WeiZhou still had his concerns, but let them go. That's what got them fighting most of the time.
"Here, let me take Cai from you, and you can go clean up." He smiled softly, taking Cai from Jingyu's arms. Jingyu smiles, kissing Timmy on his forehead and patting Cai on his head.
Jackson sighed. Timmy turned to look at him, concerned eyes peering into the singer.
"What's up?" Timmy asked, scooting closer even with the snoring child on his hip. He stroked Cai's think black hair with love.
"I just... I look at you and Jingyu and see this life that you guys have made... even if everything isn't all worked out and you both still have short circuits sometimes. You guys have so much in the right place, and I keep thinking about how badly I want that with someone."
WeiZhou thought about his words for a moment, before speaking. "Who do you want this type of thing with?"
Jackson hesitated. "BamBam. I can't even look at him anymore without thinking about it. Last night, I kissed him, and he wouldn't talk to me all day." He sighed. "I really like him. I don't want to mess anything up."
WeiZhou thought about it. He had met BamBam before, and now that he knew how Jackson felt, a lot of things made sense. Little things, like how Jackson hugged him, or laughed when he told a joke. He looked down at Cai, giving him a little bounce and rubbed his back. He had to admit, the kid was cute.
"I think you should tell him how you feel. More than just physically." He said, looking back up at Jackson. "Worst case scenario he doesn't feel the same, and it's awkward for a few weeks." WeiZhou shrugs. "We can talk about this more tomorrow, if you want. I'm really tired, and so is he." He motioned down to Cai and Jackson nodded.
"Goodnight, Timmy."
"Goodnight, Jackson."
Timmy walked slowly to his and Johnny's shared room, laying Cai down on their bed and tucking him in. Jingyu emerged from the bathroom a few seconds later with a small smile.
"Hey."
"Hey."
WeiZhou didn't know why, but when his lover said that he broke out into tears. Maybe it was because he had now realized how much their lives had changed. They couldn't put this little boy in an orphanage, but they weren't even married. Maybe it was because he was really stressed about what had happened in the night. But no matter what it was, he was in Jingyu's strong arms in two seconds, wrapped in his strong grasp, the familiar scent wrapping him in comfort. He hugged back fiercely, clinging to Jingyu and crying quietly into his shoulder. Jingyu rubbed his back, trying to calm him down.
After a few minutes WeiZhou stopped crying. He moved his hands up to hold Jingyu's face, then leaned forward and kissed him softly. There was no itching passion, no sexual sense. Only love.
"Huang Jingyu, I love you. I've always loved you."
Jingyu nodded, then opened his eyes, brushing away WeiZhou's tears with his thumbs. "I love you too, Timmy."
•••
Jingyu woke up alone at 3am from a gentle voice singing, and a guitar strumming. He recognized it as the voice of Timmy, singing one of his favourite songs from the Addicted soundtrack. He would always ask WeiZhou to play this one when he was feeling stressed. Even if it was over the phone, he would feel better. He turned around and noticed Cai wasn't beside him either. Rubbing groggy eyes, he stepped out of bed, feeling the cold of the apartment immediately in his boxers and t-shirt.
He walked, half awake, towards the homey lyrics of Teresa Teng coming from the mouth of his lover. Leaning against the door of WeiZhou's "office", he peered inside. A small light lit up the area, illuminating Timmy's face and his guitar. Cai was sitting, gazing at the man with a huge smile. WeiZhou was smiling at him too, as he sung the lyrics.
"Chú le nǐ wǒ bú néng gǎn dào yī sī sī qíng yì,
rú guǒ yǒu nà me yī tiān nǐ shuō jí jiāng yào lí qù,
wǒ huì mí shī wǒ zì jǐ zǒu rù wú biān rén hǎi lǐ."
"Without you, I cannot feel even the slightest sense of love,
If the day you said you were leaving ever came,
I would become lost, disappearing into the crowd."
Weizhou looked up, meeting Jingyu's eyes and smiling further. He finished the tune, then motioned for him to sit down.
He plucked the strings of his guitar in a very familiar way, and Jingyu began to smile when WeiZhou started to sing again, which I'll write in English even though he was singing in fluent Mandarin.
"There was a bicycle rolling down the sidewalk,
and stopped at the convenience store by the corner of the street."
Jingyu swooped Cai into his arms and began to sing his verse with a beautiful passion.
"The bold, cursive handwriting on the blackboard,
the soft smile of love-sickness."
"Under the sun,
on the sports ground,
you were sprinting."
"Ice cream,
candied fruit,
the taste of sweetness."
"The hustling promises of the waves,
could not be compared to that embrace."
"Was there ever a time you held fast by yourself,
because you've endured too much."
WeiZhou continued to play the song with his guitar, the parts with no singing. Jingyu listened, swaying back and fourth with Cai, his eyes closed. WeiZhou ended the song with a smile, then looked up at Jingyu, who looked half asleep with a sleeping Cai in his hands.
"Sorry. He couldn't sleep so I played him something. But I didn't mean to wake you."
Jingyu grinned. "It's okay, I love hearing you play guitar." WeiZhou was putting his guitar back in the case, but he turned around to smile at Jingyu.
"And I love singing that song with you." He closed the case and stood up straight. Walking forward, he kissed the top of Jingyu's head, picking Cai up from his arms and leaning him against his shoulder. "And I have to admit, he's growing on me."
Jingyu knew he was talking about Cai. "He's adorable. And I don't think we can do anything but take care of him."
"How'd you find him anyway?" WeiZhou whispered as they walked to their room. Jingyu thought about it for a few seconds.
"When I was walking home, I heard this crying sound. I looked in the alleyway and he was standing there, crying. He told me his mom had left him there a few days ago. I knew she wasn't coming back." They crawled back into bed together, with Cai in between the two.
"I'm glad you did that. But you know how much responsibility this is going to be, right?" He reached over and rubbed Jingyu's bicep. "We have to do it together. And we have to be strong."
Jingyu nodded, and they linked hands, breaths matching, eyes closing. Two hearts connected by love, and nothing else.
