Chapter Eleven
The next morning, the whole town was at the funeral for the both dead girls, Bathsheba's sister and Tehani's grandmother. All of them except for Pollux and his friends, they knew there was nothing they'd find snooping at the funeral and no one would expect them there anyway, they didn't know the girls personally in any way. So they brooded at La Suntuoso and slurped on milkshakes, refilling their cups every time courtesy of the money Yurika had found stashed in the pockets of her old jeans.
Luckily for them, this version of Eden also took Ewreburg dollars.
Pollux kicked his leg lazily at Yurika who rewarded him with a scowl and he returned it with an innocent smile. Castor looked worse for wear and at the same time ridiculous in the 40s clothes he wore, he looked paler than usual and had prominent bags under his eyes and every few seconds they would droop with tiredness.
Pollux knew that his brother didn't catch a wink of sleep in that musty smelling house they stayed in, something was bothering his twin and Pollux wasn't sure he wanted to know what it was.
"There are two types of magic, pure magic and blood magic." Tehani said suddenly, picking at a loose thread on the tablecloth and leaned back on her chair.
"What's the difference, they do the same shit." Yuri said hoarsely, she had still not touched her sandwich and was glaring at it like it was a pile of crap.
Pollux watched as Tehani shot her a look.
"They don't do the same thing, Yuri." She chided. Pollux still couldn't wrap his head around the fact that out of all four of them, three had strange abilities that couldn't be spoken out in public or this version of Eden either, you'd only get stoned to death. In the present Eden, you'd get laughed at or probably get checked into Einstein house for lunatics at the next town, Sunville.
Witchcraft and magical creatures were real, like Yurika and Castor. Some part of him had always chalked up his brother's strange affinity for death as something else even after knowing what his mother was, but magic was real, and some other part of him still doubted even know. Pollux knew he'd only believe in it if he saw it with his own eyes, but what else did he still need. He had seen enough proof, they had managed to time travel from 2020 to 1949.
"Pure magic is in the blood, dad used to say," Tehani was saying, Castor cut her off with an incredulous snort.
"Your dad practices?" Castor asked.
Tehani grinned for a flitting moment. "How do you think he's stayed Mayor of Eden for ten years?"
His twin was rendered speechless.
"Witches with pure magic come from bloodline of powerful witches, and this kind of magic cannot be taught. You either have it or don't." Tehani continued.
"Like you," Pollux hummed. She nodded.
"Blood magic is dangerous, forbidden even. It can be taught, anyone can do it," She said, adding after she saw Yuri's questioning gaze. "Yes, even you."
"Blood magic is like trading, you ask for something with a spell and pay with your blood or the blood of another. Rituals are common with this kind of magic and whatever is killing people in this town is using that kind of magic." She finished.
"That still takes us nowhere, we know our villain but we don't know what it is or it's next moves." Castor said, he slouched in his seat and drummed a beat on the table, pausing when they saw Gustavo approach them with a pitcher of milkshake on a tray in his hands.
Pollux blinked at him, unable to wrap his head at the fact that his young man was his grandfather, or would be and if he thought that Tehani looked too similar to the woman who had died a few days ago, then he didn't show it. Yurika had tried to make her look different with a bit of make up that they had swiped from the grocery store but she still didn't look all that different.
"Do you guys need another refill?" He asked. "Can I turn on the boom box for you?"
Gustavo was perhaps the few people absent from the funeral, and he had been about to leave for the funeral when the gang arrived at the restaurant and he was too kind to turn them away.
"Fill away," Castor murmured, he was looking up at their grandfather with none of the awe Pollux had in his eyes as if he were staring at a hero, instead he looked like he was considering something and was mulling how to ask it.
Gustavo bent to pour and Pollux noticed the necklace peeking from his neck, a familiar ring was the pendant and Pollux blushed at the sight, it was a purity ring and exactly like the one he was twisting on his right hand.
Yuri noticed his gaze and smirked, suddenly taking a loud slurp of her untouched drink. She used to think the ring was all for show until he kissed her to prove he had never kissed a girl. He had liked Yurika, still did but she was the one who told him nothing could ever happen between them and he had left it at that.
"Do you have a girlfriend, Gustavo?" Pollux blurted out, Gustavo looked up, startled, he blushed a deep red.
He rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly and shrugged.
"I'm engaged to be married." He said.
The twins exchanged a smile, they already knew but a part of them wanted to know that even an alternate timeline, their grandparents were together.
"Way to be nosy, Pollux." Tehani snorted after Gustavo left, she was looking down at her wrist and Pollux almost missed the mark on them, a small triangle like a tattoo.
"Wait, what's that?" He asked.
"I don't know, I woke up with it." She said, confusion in the downturn of her lips.
All three of them stared at it and Castor broke the silence first.
"I woke up with the same thing, on my wrist." He said finally. Putting out his hand on the table, Yurika followed and then Pollux.
The triangles were all similar, exact replicas.
Pollux didn't want to say anything at first when he woke because he didn't cause ruckus for nothing, but now it was not nothing.
"There was a triangle painted on Bathsheba's sister's cold body." He added.
He knew what they were all thinking, was this symbol on the body of every victim.
"There's only way to find out."
***
The last thing Tehani could have guessed she'd spend the evening doing was digging up fresh graves with her bare hands and despite the cool chill of the night, she felt sweat trickle down her chest and into her itchy blouse.
There was four victims so far; a boy who died in his home, Evan, her own grandmother and Bathsheba's younger sister and by the rate they were digging, they'd spend all night in the cemetery.
She raised a dirt clad hand to itch her ears and looked up to see a crescent moon staring down at them.
"This was not how I imagined our first date, Yuri." Pollux flirted and Tehani wondered if he felt the dread in his own bones too and joked to shake it away.
Her friend shot Pollux a dirty look, pun intended.
"Shut up, Pollux." Castor snapped, he knelt besides her and Tehani saw his hands shake.
Pollux ignored his twin and continued his flirting. "I like my women on their knees and dirty for me." He winked at Yurika and ended up with grave dirt in his mouth, he spat and spluttered, Tehani saw her friend lose the fight and burst into scared giggles.
"If we went at the rate you ran your mouth, we'd have dug out all four bodies." Castor paused his digging to sneer at his brother.
They stepped back a few steps so Castor could pull out the clad body of Matilda and Tehani felt very cold staring at those lifeless eyes. Yuri was no longer laughing and Pollux looked white.
Castor seemed to handle her with care, kneeling and placing her head in his laps, Tehani caught the slight shudder that racked through his body and the fear in his eyes, he closed his hands for a moment and he looked so vulnerable that it made her heart ache. For someone who was such close friends with death, he didn't look like he was used to it.
Her grandmother had been buried in a long sleeved white gown with frills, it looked so much like a wedding gown that it made Tehani want to throw up, a dead bride.
Castor began to peel back the sleeves on her arm, the left arm was devoid of any mark and her hands shook as she pointed the beam of the torchlight in the direction. He rolled down the other arm and unmistakably, there was a little triangle on her wrist, so like the one on their wrists too.
"She was marked." Castor said shakily, he laid her head gently on the ground and stood, swaying slightly.
"Like we are." Pollux said, Tehani saw him swallow thickly.
Yuri was the one who spoke the dreaded words. "We're next, aren't we?"
