VII. Potions Assignment
You safely apparate inside the boy's dormitory with Draco. You glance around. It's not too different from the girl's dormitory, with exception for a few minor details. You take a seat on a rug on the floor and Draco does the same, sitting across from you. "So," You start, pulling out a list of antidotes you had written earlier. "You already have bezoar, phoenix tears, murtlap essence, pepperup potion and Skele-Gro." You make a small check next to those antidotes on your list. "And you're missing...one, two, three..." You go down the list, counting silently. "Twenty four antidotes." You say.
Draco sighs dramatically. "Twenty four?! Fine. Let's get this over with." He replies. You glance at your list before taking a small bottle out of a bag you'd also prepared earlier and down its contents. "What did you just do?" Draco asks. "I drank a small dose of Veritaserum." You say truthfully. "What? I didn't ask you to do that! Why did you do that?!" He asks, panic in his voice. You roll your eyes. "So you can learn the antidotes, dummy." You say. He mouths the word 'Oh.' and you nod. "So how do I make the antidote?" He asks you.
"The antidote is far too complex to make and takes two months until you can use it. Lucky for you, I have some poisons and all their antidotes in my bag in small bottles." You say proudly. "Um, so which one is the antidote for Veritaserum?" He asks, grabbing your bag and starting to dig through it. "It's labeled. All of them are." He nods, grabbing a small bottle that has a colorless liquid in it. "So, I just give it to you?" You shake your head. "No. You observe it first, what it looks like, what it smells like, etc., etc." You reply. He does so and takes a few notes before giving it to you.
You drink the antidote and place the cork in the bottle again before placing it gently back inside your bag. Draco looks at you, unsure. "Is this how we're doing this? You do something to yourself, I observe the antidote, and then give it to you?" You nod slightly. "Pretty much, yeah. But it depends on what the antidote cures." You say, looking at your list, checking off 'Antidote to Veritaserum'. "For example, the next one cures malaria. I can't demonstrate that, so I simply tell you." Draco nods in understanding. "So, this next antidote is ashwinder eggs. They cure malaria, like I said." You dig through your bag and hand him a small bottle labeled 'Ashwinder Eggs'. It has small red ovular eggs.
"You need to include what they look and smell like, don't forget," You remind him. You check that off the list and go down the list seeing what you need to do as demonstration. You grimace at some of them, but, for the sake of science right? You turn your back to Draco as you take a small knife out of your bag. You bite down on your lip as you make a medium cut across your palm. The first of three cuts to come. You watch in silence as the blood starts to come out of the cut and onto your palm. "Brennan. Brennan, are you alright? Brennan!" You come back to reality and realize Draco was shaking you by the shoulder from behind you.
"Yeah, yeah. I..uh, are you ready for the next one?" You ask, your back still towards him. "Yes, what is it?" You glance down at the list. "Blood-replenishing potion." You say. "Are you going to explain that o-" "I already did it." You state, interrupting him. "You...you what?!" You take a deep breath and turn towards him, making sure your hand is well-hidden, your palm facing your chest. "Draco, calm down. It's not a big deal." You say, feeling the blood trickle down your palm. Draco looks down at your hands, noticing a drop of blood fall from your hand. "Brennan, you're bleeding, your-" He stops, realizing. "Show me your hand, Brennan." He says, a bit sternly.
You hold out your hand, your palm facing up, revealing the cut across your palm. "Dear Merlin, Brennan. Why the bloody hell did you think this was a good idea?" He asks, with a softer tone this time. You don't say anything as he gently takes your hand in both of his, inspecting your cut. "Well, at least we can try covering three antidotes," He says. You look at him, surprised. He glances up at you. "I was very accident-prone as a kid," He explains, grabbing three small bottles from your bag.
"Now, if I'm correct, the Blood-Replenishing potion is self-explanatory, it'll replenish your blood after injury," He says, holding up the bottle. You nod. He holds up the second bottle, which has a plant in it. "Dittany. Heals wounds and regrows skin, can be applied on wound or eaten raw if the wound is moderate or shallow." He says, as he pulls out the third bottle. "Wound-Cleaning potion. Closes and heals open wounds, and smokes and stings when applied." You nod approvingly. He takes notes on all three antidotes before handing the Blood-Replenishing potion to you. You take the Blood-Replenishing potion as he applies the Dittany and Wound-Cleaning potion. All in a few seconds, your cut is gone, leaving a slight scar on your hand.
You check off all three antidotes and move on to the next. You go through most of the simpler antidotes fairly quickly, spending a little longer on the more complicated ones. In a matter of thirty minutes, you managed to get through all the antidotes and help Draco with his assignment. Afterwards, you walk around the boy's dormitory and pass by Draco's nightstand. It has a photo of him and his parents, a bottle that looks like cologne and a small cauldron. You look at the picture. Draco looks exactly like his father, with his platinum blonde hair and silver-gray eyes. You pick up the cologne, inspecting it. Emblazoned across the top of the bottle is 'Spicebomb'. On the bottom, it says 'Viktor and Rolf'. You spray a small amount onto your wrist and smell it. It's a sharp and spicy smelling fragrance. You rub your wrist on your skirt and set the cologne down.
You turn your attention to the cauldron. "What's this?" You ask Draco, who is still seated on the floor. He stands and walks towards you. "Oh that." He grabs it and motions for you to follow him back to the rug. You sit down across from him and he sets it down in front of you. "I assume you know what this is," He says, pointing to the cauldron. You remove the lid and see the potion has a pearlescent pink color. "Of course. It's amortentia." You say. "Someone placed it on my nightstand. I don't know who or when, but when I went to sleep, it wasn't there and in the morning, it was there suddenly."
You purse your lips for a second, thinking. "Well, since it's amortentia, what do you smell?" You ask him. "I'll only answer that if you tell me what you smell." He says. "Sure," You shrug. He carefully smells the amortentia. He thinks for a second before bending down and smelling it again. "It's...green apples, and citrus. The last one smells like...lavender and mint at the same time." He finishes. "Now you." You lean forward and smell the pink potion. "I smell...irises, and mint. The last one, it smells...it smells like the ocean. Salty, but sweet at the same time." You say leaning back. Draco nods. You sit in silence for a second. "I...I should probably go before someone comes in," You say, grabbing your bag. "Alright then," Draco says, standing. You give him a small smile before apparating to the girl's dormitory.
You collapse on the floor as soon as you've apparated inside the girl's dormitory. Daphne leaps off her bed and runs to you. "Sarafina, what's the matter?" Daphne asks worriedly. "Ugghhhhhhhhhhhhh," You whine in response. "Sarafina Brennan, I need details. Now." Daphne orders. "We just did the homework and I kinda cut myself in the process and he kinda got mad at me for doing that, and I kinda looked at his stuff when we were done, and he kinda had an amortentia potion appear out of nowhere and we kinda took turns smelling it and we kinda told each other what we smelled and I kinda lied about it..." You whine, now out of breath. "Okay, what do you mean by 'you kinda lied about it'?" Daphne asks, using air quotes. "I mean I knew what the last smell was and I lied about it." You continue to whine. "Well what was the last smell and what did you tell him?"
"You know what amortentia is, right?" You ask Daphne. "Yes, of course. It's a powerful love potion, and it smells like what you are attracted to the most. It's different for each person." Daphne says. "Okay, on that thought, I told the truth on the first two, which were irises and mint. I love irises because I grew them in the backyard back at home, and I love mint because its smell calms me. I lied about the third one. I told him it was the smell of the ocean." You explain. "So what was it actually?" Daphne asks, raising a brow. "Just a second. On another note, you know how I said I kinda went through his stuff?" She nods. "One of those things was a fragrance. Like a cologne or something." You say. Daphne nods slowly. "So this relates to the amortentia because...?" You close your eyes. "I didn't smell the ocean, Daphne." You say. "I smelled-" "Draco's cologne," Daphne finishes.
