New Case

New version of 'Deviants Assemble'. Once again, this chapter was hard to write. I couldn't find the right direction and when I thought i did it failed horribly. This version is the one I am happy with, I hope you enjoy it as well!

-
When I first bought my house, I had absolutely hated it. The small, cabin-like home was right along the border of Canada. Meaning I got more than a few random visits from the police. At first, the police would come a few times a month. Annoying, yes, but overall manageable. As I worked my way up the career ladder they would even come less and less, probably under the assumption that I could handle myself.

These visits, however, did not stay manageable for very long.

I had begun to notice it about three months ago. Knocks on my door would wake me in the middle of the night, force me out of the shower, and tear me from my morning coffee. Once a months had quickly turned to twice a month, once every two weeks, and, finally, once a week. Saturday's, usually.

So, when I saw the police car in front of my home I wasn't too surprised. I had only been home from work for about thirty minutes, which was annoying, but this visit was to be expected so I didn't worry about for too long. As I had come to believe, the rise of Deviants amongst androids forced the police to me. When you take into consideration my location it was understandable. Canada was free, Detroit was not. Any intelligent creature would connect the dots and attempt to flee. The police force only worried I was being forced into something.

I stand from my spot at the table as the red and blue lights flash against my home. They cast a glad against the pale walls of my living room that was hard to miss. My eyes shift over the glow, admiring the way the shadows added another dimension to the place before they land in Daniel, who was still at my house, just as a car door slammed shut.

"Go up to my room and lock the door. One word and you will regret it." Danial doesn't even hesitate at my warning. Instead, he pushed the chair back with his legs and stands straight before heading off. I reach over and push his hair in, knowing quite well exactly what the police will look for. My hand wraps around a book a few feet away before I sit once more, eyeing the cover. For a moment a silence fills the air. It was only broken by the closing of my bedroom door and the shuffling of pages as I open the book. When the door was suddenly knocked on I was sure to act natural and calm.

"Come in." I spoke loudly, knowing the people at the door would find the lock undone. It had been a long time since that lock had even been used.

"There is no need, (Y/N). I am simply here to collect you. We have another suspected deviant case." Conner's familiar voice slips from under the door, downright scaring me. I visibly jump at the unexpected sound. A thud follows as my book tumbles to the floor. Conner? At my house? Never had I expected anything like hat to happen.

My chair made a squeaking sound as I stand, the wooden thing being pushed back a couple of feet. Quickly I was making my way to the front door, a rather sound padding sound resonated from my sock-covered feet. When I reach the door I waste no time in pulling it open. The wind hit my fact harshly at the act, sending my hair flying around behind me.

"A case?" I whisper as if someone was listening in. My eyes rise to Conner's face, taking in his hands clasped in front of him. He stood rather awkwardly at the door. It seemed as though he did not know what to do. Certainly cyberlife had added the ability to do something right? Yet it seemed Conner was too still, the only part of him that moved was his eyes. The chocolate brown meets my own. They seem to even soften as they do, my memory flashing to his body protecting mine from the deviant. Perhaps Cyberlife had gotten something right. "What do you mean? We just finished up with the last one."

"Y- Officer (L/N) , there are over 200 case files on reported deviants. The chances of us working on more than one case a day is exactly 79%." His tone was gently, almost delicate as he spoke. It didn't add up to the usual loud and demanding voice of an Android. Nevertheless that didn't help my sudden panic much. My eyes widen at the words, my jaw dropping slightly as I hear the words. Working so much so soon was something I had never planned. As a detective in training, this was a great opportunity. Most were not this lucky, however, I found myself both mentally and physically exhausted. Solving another case like the one we had just wrapped up seemed impossible.

"79%? What sort of outbreak are we dealing with..." I think outloud. My hand slips from the door as I lean back against the frame. The overwhelming numbers shocked my system, sending a shiver down my spine. Fear for our country - our safety - courses through my veins.

"The deviant we are assigned to now is a series AP400. She is said to have killed a man before running off with a small child." Conner spoke, his eyes followed my every move. Once again he reminded me of someone who had no idea what they should be doing. He made no move to sit down or even relax, instead inclining to stand as stiff as a board as he spoke to me. For some reason I took the Android's hand and had him lean against the opposite frame. He did it willingly, crossing his arms like he saw me doing. A giggle leaves me before I clear my throat.

"Continue." I nod to him. The smile on my face was fighting against itself. Some of my brain wanted it gone while the other didn't want to let it go. Conner was leaning against the frame just like me, yet his arms and every other muscle were as tense as they could be. "And, relax a little."

"Officer (L/N) -"

"Call me (Y/N)." I interrupt him, smiling warmly at the android. His LED flashes yellow for a moment before returning to blue. As I watch he slowly begins to relax, as well, his expression loosening before suddenly tensing once more. I felt myself frown at it, almost like it was a lost battle.

"We need to leave as soon as possible. There was a sighting and we can't let her slip through our fingertips." Conner spoke once more. The mechanical voice that seemed to have been missing had made a return. I didn't like it as much as I had liked the other one. Even with the few days of knowing Conner he had began to grow on me. He was android, yes, yet he acted like any other person around. Of course innocence was more than normal, and his lack of humanlike emotion was missing, but he was like everyone else. He cracked the occasion joke here or there and got picked on by Hank. Conner was slowly being accepted into our little family. Or, well... Hank was accepting him. Me? There was something odd about my emotions.

"Oh yeah... sorry." With a sort of dreading hesitation I push off of the frame of the door and step inside of my house. A quick glance down at my jeans, T-Shirt, and hood assure me all I needed was my postal and I would be free to leave. "Just give me a minute."

"Of course (Y/N)." Conner offered me a small nod as I turn around. The small hallway leading to my door his the house from my partner. For once I found myself rather glad it did. Food wrappers and drinks littered the living room, the floor hadn't been vacuumed and the furniture remains un-dusted. Daniel had of course offered to clean, yet I had turned him down quickly.

Now, I was running up my bedroom hall as fast as I could manage. So fast I could barely stop myself before slamming into the bedroom door. I made it, thankfully, and pulled open the heavy door before slipping inside.

Daniel sat on my bed, rising as I sped into the room. His eyebrows furrow in worry at my rushed form. The deviant stepped out in front of me, arms up in an almost surrender.

"(Y/N) are you okay?" Daniel spoke softly, stepping forwards to grab my arm. He held onto it loosely as he spoke. His fingers wouldn't leave any sort of mark on me at his delicacy. For a moment I once again thought of Conner and his protective stance in front of me.

"Daniel, I have a case." I sidestep around the male to grab my pistol. The metal toy had been thrown on the nightstand as I got home. It wasn't hard to pick it up and slip it inside my waistline. As soon as they was done I drop to the floor, grabbing my shoes and slipping them on. "Stay inside and stay safe. Take your LED out while you're at it, and do something with your hair. The police might show up sometime today before I get back. Keep calm if they do, that is normal."

I hop up, rushing to the door. Daniel wasn't even given a chance to question me as I reach the living room. I pass my phone as I run through the area, bending down and quickly picking them up along with my keys. All the whole I barely pause, only stopping when I reach the door.

Conner was - cutely - leaning against the doorframe just the same as he had been. His crossed arms and the head that turns to me as soon as it could manage made him seem as innocent as a child. After some of the things I had seen Conner do I would easily mistake him for one.

"Alright, lets go." I step out of my house and close the door, a cluck sounding as it shut. My hands linger in the doorknob for a moment before pulling away. Conner steps back as I take up room on the porch, the familiar strand of hair hanging on his forehead swaying slightly.

I was met with silence as Conner's eyes scan up and down my body for a moment. Suddenly he was frowning, his head tilting before he reaches forwards. My eyes widen as his whole body leans down. I was sure a blush spread across my face as I grip the edge of my shirt tightly. It had been a long time since a guy had done anything of this sort. His hand slips behind me, my eyes on his lips as he gets closer still. Sadly the android seemed unaffected beside my speeding heart and flustered face.

"C-Conner What are you-" I start out with a stutter. My once focused brain fell away to an overworked one, my heart spewing up as Conner's eyes meet mine. For a second the android seems to flinch. Once again a soft expression passes over him. I even imagine his eyes flickering down to my lips for a moment before meeting mine again.

"It's gotten significantly colder this week. Fall is turning into winter and that jacket is not enough to keep you warm, (Y/N). Especially considering your weakness to the cold." Conner grabs the string of my hoodie as he speaks, eyes dropping to it as he twists it between his fingers. He seemed to pause for another moment before he passes me. Not a second later Conner was holding up one of my heavier jackets. It was one of my favorites, and, thankfully, had been sitting right inside the hallway.

Conner slips to the side of me before helping me get the jacket on. If he noticed the blush or the nerves crawling over my skin he ignored it completely. Instead he walked in front of me to zip up the jacket. When he was finished he looks up to me with a small smile, stepping back a moment later.

"Alright... lets go."
