off the deep end

julie stood awkwardly on stage as everyone murmured in confusion, waiting for an explanation. but julie hadn't spoken a word, she was yet to think of an excuse.
the lighting technician jogged onto the stage, "hey, where'd the rest of the band go?"
"wait... were those holograms?" one of the girls in carrie's group, kayla, asked aloud.
"yes!" julie pointed at her and nodded, that was a brilliant idea that she hadn't thought of. "yes, they were holograms." she chuckled lightly, "i plugged it into the ceiling projector before the show. i'd explain it, but it involves algorithms and science stuff."
they all started clapping again, finally understanding. stasie spotted the boys in the corner of the stage and made her way over to them.
"you guys did great!" she grinned.
"thanks, stasie." reggie smiled.
"thank you." luke nodded.
"it was pretty nerve-racking up there." said alex.
"it wouldn't have been if you-" stasie started.
"pictured everyone in their underwear?" reggie cut her off, "if anything, that'd make him more nervous."
"hey!" alex glared at him, slightly offended but he knew it was true.
"that's wild." luke started, grabbing their awareness, "t-they could see us when we were playing, but not when the music ended."
"we should double-check." reggie suggested. he climbed up the stage steps and began wiggling his behind in a circular motion.
"reggie-"
"yeah, i don't..." he stopped and moved back down, "i don't think they can see us."
"i speak for stasie and i, when i say wish i couldn't see you." alex shivered.
"yes, you do." stasie approved.
"okay people, show's over." principal lessa announced, "let's get back to class, please."
"what was that?" carrie scolded her friend before mimicking her, "were those holograms?"
"hey there." reggie introduced himself, following the two as they walked away, "hi. reggie."
"what even is that?" carrie continued, clearly not acknowledging him, "what was that?" she was bothered by julie's whole show, overpassing dirty candy's performance.
"could i call you sometime?" reggie didn't stop, "what's your number?"
alex noticed the slightly sullen expression on stasie's face, nudged luke and smirked. luke was slower than his friends, so it took him a couple of looks between stasie and reggie to understand what alex was referring to. once he put two and two together, he lighly giggled to himself. someone had a crush.
"so... what do you have now?"
"huh?"
"what class do you have now?" alex repeated, more gradually.
"oh, sorry." stasie apologised.
"distracted?" alex teased.
"you could say that." stasie sighed, not even bothering to deny how she felt about reggie overtly attempting to flirt with other girls. they couldn't even see him as she could but it still made her feel weird."and i have physics, dreading it."
"it's okay, i hated physics too." luke told her as they walked out of the main hall.
"it's not that i hate it, i'm just not good at it." stasie explained.
"i know someone who's very good at it, extremely good if do say so myself." alex told her with a developing smile.
luke was finally able to catch on, "yeah, he's great."
"really?" stasie grinned, "who is it?"
"anastasia, are you okay?" a voice beckoned.
she hastily spun around to see nick strolling up to her and several of his lacrosse friends laughing not too far behind.
"i'm fine, why'd you ask?" stasie scratched her neck.
"you were... talking to someone, but no one is around." nick explained.
"you're correct, no one is around." stasie nodded, "but you know me." she tapped her forehead and nick instantly understood what she was expressing.
"right." he nodded, "see you in class?"
"see you then."
the blond boy casually stepped away, not before turning around and checking on the girl again. he shook his head and joined his companions.
"what was that all about?" luke inquired, wanting to know what the girl meant when she tapped her head.
stasie shrugged, not wanting to get into it. "so, who is this person that you guys were talking about?"
"reggie." the two boys spoke in sync.

"this is a weirdly, long way to a science class." luke pointed out.
the four had been doing laps around the school, they hadn't noticed stasie was leading them away from her lesson.
"well... i was going to go to class, but then i decided to save myself from embarrassment." stasie sighed, "my teacher loves picking on me yet he knows i never know the answer."
"wow, this is a shock." reggie hopped onto a bench, "anastasia... not sure what her last name is, is skipping physics!"
"that announcement would be super beneficial if stasie wasn't the only person who could hear us." alex told him.
"it's the thought that counts." reggie pouted as he hopped off the bench.
"it's jackson." stasie spoke gently.
"what is?"
"my last name."
"anastasia jackson?" luke queried.
"yeah, she just said that." alex nodded.
"do you hear that?" reggie paused.
"hear what?" stasie quizzed.
"i don't hear nothing." luke shrugged.
"the proper term would be: 'i don't hear anything'." alex corrected him.
"it's julie." reggie explained, "let's uh, surprise her."
the two boys nodded and allowed luke to stand in between them and on their knees as they squatted down.
"aren't you going to hide?" luke asked her.
she nodded and walked through the three, hiding behind their bodies.
"julie!" the guys yelled out, causing her to scream in surprise.
"you! stop doing that!" she scolded the trio as luke stepped off them, "i'm serious."
"boo!" stasie jumped at her, moving through luke.
julie flinched back in shock, "anastasia! you too?"
"whoa!" reggie held his hands up in defence, "this one's all on you. we were already here. well, actually, we were over there walking with stasie, and then we came over here."
"are we not gonna talk about what happened?" luke interrupted him.
"yeah, the whole school saw you." julie reminded them, "it's kinda freaking me out."
"okay, good, cause it's kind of freaking me out too." alex spoke out, "you know, you could see us. stasie could see us and people could see us whenever we play music. and my clothes are made of air, but for some reason," alex stated while pulling his jacket, "i'm still getting a wedgie."
the four looked at him with slightly disgusted faces.
he sharply inhaled, "so many questions."
"the important thing is that we rocked that place." luke brought them back to the main topic, "they were loving you!"
"are you kidding? they loved us." julie corrected him, "that was a great song, luke. thanks."
"yes, the song was amazing! and you guys sounded awesome." stasie nodded while giving julie a side hug.
"a-a-and did you guys see the cheerleaders looking at me?" reggie beamed, "i think they were looking at me. please tell me they were."
luke chuckled and held his face in his hands, "bro, they were looking at you." he sneakily glanced over to stasie, "all the girls were."
"oh, i knew it!" he cheered, much to the jackson girl's dismay.
"i'm so- i'm so confused, you know?" alex began rambling, "the afterlife should come with instructions or a quick start guide or something."
"well, the good thing is that everyone thought you guys were holograms, and i got back into the program." julie sighed.
"why'd do you look so bummed?"
"yeah, dude, you're making this face." luke used his arms to bring the two boys together and they all pouted in sync.
"hmph." julie scoffed, "that... is not my face."
"eh..."
"it's your face." luke nodded, "stasie, isn't it?"
"well... i hate to agree but." she droned off.
"and things just got weird between me and flynn." julie explained, "she asked about you guys, and i couldn't say."
"sweet." reggie nodded, giving luke a low-five, "girls are already talking about us."
"stop. i'm serious." julie frowned, "i can't tell her about you guys for the same reason i can't tell my dad. she'll think i've gone off the deep end... just like stas thought she was going off the deep end."
"do we have to bring this up every time?" stasie sighed. the boys were picking up on the constant mention of stasie's mental state.
"you thought we were part of your imagination." alex grinned, "that's pretty funny."
"you know what else is funny?" stasie started, "crying for twenty-five-"
"you wouldn't," he warned.
so, she didn't.
"well, this dude definitely thinks you two have gone off the deep end." reggie pointed behind them and moved to the side as the janitor walked forward.
"hmm..." he shook his head.
"mm."
"i gotta get back to class." julie told them before clutching stasie's arm, "and i'm delivering you to your physics class."
"no, no. wait-"
"later, guys." reggie waved.
"bye."
"have fun."
"oh, tell those cheerleaders i'm single." reggie called out.
"oh, and that he's dead." alex added.
"oh no, no, no! leave that part out. leave that- she's gone."
"whoo!" luke cheered.
─── ∙ ~εïз~ ∙ ───
"can you believe this." stasie marched into the studio room to see the three ghosts.
after julie had dragged the girl to her physics class and refused to leave until the girl entered, stasie's mood dampened. coincidently, they had gotten their results on the test they did about a week ago - and stasie's wasn't looking good.
alex sprang off the piano, "what happened?"
"look at this." she placed her papers into his hands and watched as they sank right through as he wasn't expecting it, "oh."
"that didn't go to plan."
stasie sighed and plucked up her paper to show the boys her test result.
"you got a... D?" reggie frowned as he scanned the paper, although the girl's handwriting was quite hard to read.
"not just a D, a D minus." stasie cried out, "my mama is going to murder me."
"you could always take our advice." luke told her.
"what advice?" reggie quizzed.
"we were telling her how amazing you are at physics." alex rested a hand over his shoulder.
"hmm, i'm alright." reggie shrugged before giving her a smirk, "i could give you a hand if you'd like."
"oh, erm." stasie shut her eyes tightly, "did you guys know that the first oranges weren't even orange?"
"crazy."
"so crazy."
"scientifically speaking," alex started, moving on fron her unusual statement. "you can't really give her a hand, because she can't touch you."
luke nudged his arm and gave him a look, "doesn't matter." he turned to stasie, "don't worry about it, it's just a stupid letter on a stupid page."
"i hope you're right."
all of a sudden, julie ran into the room, "guys! oh, hi stas."
"hey, julie." stasie waved while she shoved her paper into her bag, "what's got you in a rush?"
"i need you guys' help."
"with what?"
"i may or may not have told flynn about you guys being ghosts." julie explained.
"oh, thank gosh. i hate keeping secrets." stasie sighed, "well it wasn't really a secret since she didn't ask me, but you get what i mean."
"for some reason, i do get what you mean." reggie nodded.
"what did flynn say when you told her." luke asked.
"she... didn't believe me." julie sighed, "still, it's fine because we are going to prove it to her!"
