the dance

─── ∙ ~εïз~ ∙ ───

stasie was sat on the edge of the stage with her legs dangling down. the girl was perched next to flynn and her turntables. stasie always admired how amazing and interactive her friend was with crowds.

"woo-hoo!"

"yeah!"

she watched as everyone danced on the floor, having the times of their lives.

flynn chuckled while bringing the microphone closer to her mouth, "do we have any bobcats in the house?"

the room erupted in cheers and even stasie clapped for her friend.

"everybody make some noise!" flynn encouraged them, making them scream louder, "okay, okay, okay. not too much noise. there's an anger management meeting down the hall." she joked.

as they laughed, stasie stood up and went over to the girl, "need any help yet?"

"don't worry, i'd be a bad date if i made you work during the dance." flynn shrugged.

stasie shook her head, "okay, fair enough." before she could sit down, she saw julie walk up to the stage, a projector in her hands.

"cmon." flynn pulled the girl up, "let's going to the side with julie."

"okay." stasie took her hand and allowed her to lead her next to the stage curtains.

julie stood on the floor as flynn and stasie stood above her, crouching down so they could communicate.

"how you feeling?" flynn asked the girl.

"i'm a little nervous." julie confessed.

"underwear." stasie mouthed.

julie glared at her and playfully pushed her leg.

"you'll be fine." flynn reassured her, "all your gear's backstage because stasie didn't want to do anything without you. come on."

flynn took stasie behind the stage and the two girls waited for julie to show. when she did, they couldn't help but adore her outfit.

"oh my gosh!" flynn pulled he into a hug, "you look amazing!"

"thanks!"

"i'm in love with your overshirt." stasie complimented as julie embraced her.

"thank you, it's my mum's." julie told them, "i finally went through her stuff."

flynn nodded, "she would've loved that you wore that." she then looked around and played with her braids, "are the guys here?"

"no, they aren't." stasie laughed while placing a hand on her shoulder.

"but they will be." julie nodded, "they know how important this is to me."

the boys were late. julie was behind the curtains and stasie was trying to take her mind off the tardiness by telling her what happened a few hours ago.

"and you decided to play country music?" julie laughed.

"remember trisha yearwood?" stasie smiled at the past memories.

"you played XXX's and OOO's?!" julie's face brightened up, "oh, i miss that song."

"you're more than welcome to borrow the CD if you'd like, miss fiddle." stasie joked.

"keep laughing." julie nodded, "but when you see me smashing it on the fiddle, we'll see who'll be laughing."

stasie frowned, "it'll still be me."

"is everybody fired up for julie and the phantoms?" flynn asked the crowd, making them cheer, "great! keep that fire 'cause that's later - we're a bit behind schedule, but don't worry, just enjoy these mind-blowing beats."

flynn sauntered over to the two girls with a smile.

"julie and the phantoms?" julie quizzed.

"i had some free time in french class." flynn shrugged, "and you'd better like it because we registered it on insta, snapchat, twitter-"

julie shook her head, "no, i love it. but i'd love it even more if the actual phantoms were here."

"they'll be here, don't worry." stasie gave her a comforting look.

flynn noticed a certain blond making his way over to them, she pointed behind julie and pulled stasie away.

"what was that for?"

"nick was coming," she revealed.

"cute." stasie nodded while following flynn back to her turntable like a lost puppy.

"keep it funky, y'all!" flynn said to the crowd.

"flynn, would you like to dance," stasie suggested the girl.

"thought you'd never ask." flynn grinned while pulling her over to the side of the stage.

"then why didn't you ask?" stasie quizzed as she slowly moved the music.

flynn shrugged before noticing the girl's dancing, "stas, come on - let loose. didn't you take dance class for years?"

"but we're dancing on the stage, where everyone can see us." stasie explained.

"and? they can observe our awesome moves." flynn took her arms and began flapping them around, trying to urge her to dance.

stasie broke out into a laugh and the two girls began whirling like maniacs, not noticing nick and carrie at the back of the hall watching them.

"i can only stall for so long." flynn told julie as she went over to change up the song, "it's eleven o'clock, "i think you should just play by yourself. i mean, holograms or no holograms, you'll be amazing."

"you'll be great jules!" stasie told her.

julie shook her head, "you saw me the other day. i can't play without them. they'll be here. they have to."

stasie and flynn shared a look before the latter relocated over to the microphone: "lookin' good, bobcats!"

as the two girls quietly conversed, nick began running onto the stage. he took the mic and began speaking to the crowd.

"hey, everybody! we fixed the hologram thing." he exclaimed, "who wants to see a show? come on!"

the crowd began cheering and flynn looked slightly perplexed.

"are the guys here?" flynn asked the girl over the loud yelling.

"i don't think so - i don't see them. unless they'll appear as she's performing." stasie explained.

"now... give it up... for julie and the phantoms!" he finished, making the crowd yell even louder.

"let's do it!"

"come on, come on." he ushered julie over and gave her the microphone, "here you go."

"uh... hi." julie chuckled nervously, "so here's the thing even though we got the machine fixed, thanks to nick-"

she was cut off by the crowd cheering for their star lacrosse player.

"way to go, nick!"

"i can't seem to link up with the guys." julie continued, "wi-fi, am i right?"

stasie gave her friend a sad look, upset to see her so nervously talking to the crowd that looked annoyed.

"i'm sorry, but... i'm gonna have to cancel." julie finalised.

"what?" people said as they started murmuring, confused at what julie was saying.

"are you serious?"

stasie sighed and made her way over to the mic, "it's not julie's fault." she explained, "unless any one of you can miraculously fix the internet connection."

the audience was silent, just as she had expected.

"i'm leaving!" a girl spoke out.

"um... anybody know the heimlich?" carrie quizzed out loud as she walked to the stage, "julie's choking."

as they laughed at her comment, carrie scoffed and seized the microphone from stasie's grasp, "only one way to save this dance. who wants to see dirty candy?"

they cheered for her as she moved over to turn a switch on the turntable.

"oh!" flynn pulled it out before she could touch it, "oops! knob's broken."

"did she just do that?" someone quizzed as everyone else groaned.

"okay." carrie nodded, "two can play at this game. party at my house!" the strawberry blonde announced.

the group began praising, clapping and laughing in excitement, happy they had a new place to party.

carrie turned to the three girls and smirked, "oh!" she dropped the mic and sauntered over to nick near the stairs. they stood on the stage and watched as everyone exited the room.

"well, that kind of backfired." flynn explained as she put her arms around the two and brought them forward.

"kinda?" stasie asked.

"oh, i mean the whole night wasn't a bust." flynn tried to cheer them up, "the new guy found someone. little man has game!"

"i'm happy for him." stasie tried her hardest to smile at the young boy and his much taller dance partner.

flynn and julie were sat in front of the balloon arc with pins in their hands while stasie was stood up, popping the ones higher.

"i can never show my face at this school again."

"i'm sure it'll be forgotten about in a few days." stasie shrugged, "at least you didn't snap at a whole crowd."

julie laughed, "you're the best for that."

"and i'm the meanest." stasie shook her head, "though, it's fine because just as you said in flying solo: ♪ and if somebody hurts you we're gonna get hurt too ♪" she reminded her.

"you're exactly right." flynn nodded, "... but that's what we get for depending on boys."

julie sighed and nodded, "i don't know if i should be mad or worried."

"a bit of both never hurt anyone." stasie pointed out.

"they're ghosts. i don't know what kind of trouble they can get into."

"i'mma get us some ice cream from the cafeteria." flynn stood up, "fools gave me the keys."

"they did?" stasie chuckled, "they must really love you."

"how can they not?" flynn grinned, "we can crash at my place and forget about this whole nightmare."

"get me two... of everything." julie ordered.

"and vanilla for you stas?" flynn questioned.

"of course."

"still basic as ever i see." she played around.

"i can hear the ice cream melting, flynn." stasie joked in a sing-song voice.

"no you can't." flynn crossed her arms with a laugh.

"you better tend to them quick," stasie smiled, "you need me to come with you?"

"it's fine, stay with jules."

"see you in a bit."

"okay, okay." flynn nodded as she jogged off.

"are you as annoyed as i am?" julie quickly asked her friend, "want to make sure we are on the same page."

"course we are julie, if i see them i'll beat them up for you." stasie told her while sitting beside her, "well, i won't and plus-"

"they're ghosts?"

"exactly."

the door flew open and the three boys ran inside the empty room.

"girls, we are ready to rock this dance," reggie started, then noticed how the hall was isolated, "which is clearly over.

alex nudged them and they looked over to julie who was getting on her feet and stasie who was still sat down.

"look, we are... so, so sorry that we bailed on you." luke explained while moving over to them.

"yeah, i mean, the night really got away from us." alex continued.

"and the twins." reggie added.

"the who?" stasie quizzed as luke smacked his friend.

"just please tell me it had nothing to do with you getting back at carrie's dad." julie pleaded.

"pfft!"

"oh, of course not."

"no! we wouldn't do that."

"us? no."

"no."

julie turned back to her friend and shook her head. the boys soon realised that they could see right through their attempt at a lie.

"seriously?" julie glared, "you're lying to me?"

"okay, look, it was something we needed to do." alex tried to reason.

"b-but we'll do whatever it takes." alex started to give her another option, "we'll play the next school-"

julie was quick to cut him off, "what? another dance where you can bail on me and make me look like a fool? save it. you know what really sucks? our songs were good. and all three of you knew what i've been through, and how tough it's been for me to play, and then you do this?"

they watched her, feeling guilty as ever.

"bands don't do that to each other. friends don't do that to each other." she concluded, "this was a mistake."

"you mean the school dance, right?" alex inquired.

"no." she scoffed, "i mean joining a band with you guys."

"julie..." alex called out after her as she ran out the front door, "julie!"

next, they turned to the girl who had still been sitting with the balloons.

"stasie-"

she quickly stood up, picked up the sharp needle and sighed. "i'm just... really disappointed." stasie explained.

the ghosts frowned, stasie wasn't the type of person who would get disappointed, she was always extremely cheerful.

"see you guys later." she whispered, "i think." the girl then jogged over to the door where julie had exited from.
