16 - We're So Close Now

The plane ticket was for the 12th of January. It was currently the last week of December, a few days after Christmas. John was leaving for America in a few days, and they had to have most of their stuff packed by then.

"Dean where did you put the box that was in here?" Sam yelled through the house.

"I didn't touch your stuff!" Dean yelled back from some other room. Sam made an exasperated noise, looking around his room.

"You okay Sammy?" Gabe asked, since he was currently on a Skype call with Sam.

"Yeah, it's just kinda stressful," Sam said. "Make sure we have everything we need, but leave enough things for me and Dean to survive until our flight, but still fit everything into the space that we have."

Gabe gave Sam a sympathetic look. "Don't worry, you'll be fine. Besides," he gave Sam a wide smile, "the more you pack and the closer you get to me."

"No that's just my belongings getting close to you," Sam said, smiling. Gabe chuckled.

"You know what I mean," Gabe said, before squinting at the screen. "Hey is that the charm I gave you?"

Sam put a hand to the golden feather that was now on a chain and hanging around his neck. "Maybe," he said, smiling softly. Gabriel smiled brightly.

"Gah I wish you were here kiddo," Gabe said.

"Soon Gabe, soon," Sam said, smiling at his angel.

~~

A few more days passed. New Years Eve.

Dean dragged Sam out to Melbourne, for their last New Years spent in Australia. Melbourne always had this amazing fireworks show at midnight, thousands of people always gathered to watch it.

(I live right near Melbourne yet have never gone to see the fireworks show :( )

Dean found them a moderately quiet place near the edge of the city, where they could still see the fireworks but it wasn't as crowded anymore.

"Do you think you'll miss Australia?" Sam asked as he looked at Melbourne's skyline.

"Maybe," Dean shrugged. "We can always visit again."

"True," Sam said, glancing at the time. "Can I call Gabe?"

"Why do you think I found a quiet spot?" Dean asked.

"So you can call Cas."

Dean laughed. "Yeah, now call your boyfriend."

Sam smiled and pulled out his phone, skyping Gabe. Gabe immediately picked up.

"So I'm calling you from the future where it's about to become 2017," Sam said, smiling at his boyfriend.

"Aww Sammy we'll be in entirely different years," Gabe said. "We'll be so far apart."

Sam chuckled, turning the camera so Gabe could see Melbourne. "There's a fireworks show. Watch it with me?"

"Obviously," Gabe said. "You know, I have no one to have a New Years kiss with. Not anyone in this country at least."

"Well, let's just say I owe you then," Sam said, smiling brightly.

"Holding you to that," Gabe said, smirking.

Meanwhile, Dean had called Cas.

"Heya Cas," Dean said. This was the first time he'd called him since Christmas.

"Hello Dean," Cas replied. Dean still wasn't prepared for the deep voice that Cas had.

"So we're about to hit midnight," Dean said. "So uhh...wanna spend New Years with me?"

"Only if you'll call me back in 17 hours and help me through my families new years party," Cas said and Dean could hear the smile in his voice.

"Of course," Dean said.

Suddenly a countdown started, and all four of them fell silent. Then the counter hit zero and the fireworks started. Gabe could see the fireworks through Skype, and Cas could hear them.

Cas heard, just barely over the fireworks, Dean say, "Happy new year my angel." He must've been mistaken, unless his theory about Dean liking him was correct. Cas pondered this for a moment before abruptly ending the call and calling back on facetime.

Dean answered, the camera tilted away from him. Cas also wasn't showing himself on the camera.

"Cas what?" Dean asked.

"I wanted to see the fireworks," Cas said, and Dean adjusted the camera to show the fireworks. "Hearing fireworks without seeing them is not quite as interesting."

"Never would've guessed," Dean said, chuckling slightly.

As the fireworks died down, Dean looked back at his phone. "Okay well we gotta go home now Cas. I'll call you back at midnight okay?"

"Of course Dean," Cas said. "Goodnight."

"Night Cas," Dean said, smiling as he ended the call.

Back to Sam and Gabe.

"Dude Cas is smiling like an idiot," Gabe said. "Was Dean talking to him?"

"Yeah," Sam said. "Are you with Cas?"

"Yep, we're all gathering at Michael and Luci's place," Gabe said. "People are gonna get drunk tonight. You should see drunk satan."

"Sounds...interesting," Sam said unsurely. Gabe laughed.

"Hey I'll talk to you later okay?" Gabe said. "For when we hit midnight."

"Yeah," Sam said, smiling. "Goodnight Gabey."

"Night Sammy."

~~

17 hours later Sam got a Skype call from Gabriel. Except Gabriel was drunk.

"Sammy!" he yelled as Sam answered the call. "I've missed you soooo muuuuch."

"Are you...drunk?" Sam asked, hearing the slur in Gabe's voice.

"Pft nahhhh," Gabe said, stumbling a bit as he walked away from a group of loud people. "Satan was offering drinks but meh."

"You should drink some water," Sam said, smiling softly.

"But whyyyy," Gabe whined. "I just wanna be with you Sammy..." His voice trailed off. "I just wanna hug you and kiss you and never let go of you." Sam could feel the blush rising to his cheeks. "You're so far away..."

"Not for long Gabey," Sam said. He heard a countdown start in the background. "See, you're almost in the same year as me." Gabe smiled goofily.

As the countdown hit zero there were cheers in the background and some sort of drunken sound from Gabe.

"Go find Cas would you?" Sam asked. Gabe nodded and stumbled around for a bit before finding Cas, grabbing onto Cas's arm and almost dragging him to the ground as he almost fell.

"Gabriel?" Cas asked, then saw the phone in Gabe's hand. He took it, and saw Sam.

"He told me ta find you," Gabe mumbled, his words barely intelligible.

"I figured you're sensible enough to take care of him," Sam said and Cas nodded.

"I'll get him some water and make sure he sleeps," Cas said, and Sam noticed that he was holding a phone in his hand.

"Sammmmmyyyyy stayyy," Gabe whined.

"I can't multitask this much," Cas said, looking at the two phones and the drunken idiot on his arm.

"It's okay Cas, I'll go," Sam said. "Look after him okay?" Cas nodded, and then hung up the call, almost handing the phone back to Gabe before thinking better of it.

"Sammy," Gabe said in a small voice and Cas just sighed.

"How's that going for you?" Dean's voice came from his own phone.

"Drunk Gabe is impossible to deal with," Cas said, grabbing Gabe and dragging him off to one of the bedroom's in their brothers house.

"I'll bet," Dean said. Cas shoved Gabe down onto a bed and Gabe pouted before flopping down like jelly.

"Sleep," Cas said. "I'll bring you water."

"Two steps ahead of you Cassie," Luci said, appearing in the room with a glass, passing it to Gabe. "Why aren't you drunk?"

"Why aren't you?" Cas asked, rolling his eyes.

"I'm Satan," Luci said. "I don't get drunk." He narrowed his eyes. "Who are you talking to?"

"Dean," Cas said simply, as Dean was silent on his end.

"Who's Dean?" Luci asked.

"A friend," Cas said.

"Cas you don't make friends," Luci said. "Soo...I ship it."

"Wha—no!" Cas spluttered. Luci just laughed and walked out of the room.

"He jumps to conclusions quickly," Dean noted.

"Yeah he does that," Cas said, sighing. "Sorry about that."

"It's okay," Dean said. "You should probably get some sleep too you know."

Cas sighed. "Like I could sleep with these idiots." Dean chuckled. "I'm going to go socialize with them, but they'll question me if I keep talking to you."

"Okay," Dean said. "Hey we'll talk some other time okay?" Cas nodded before remembering Dean couldn't see him.

"Okay," Cas said. "Goodbye Dean."

"See ya Cas."

~~

Gabriel was definitely confused the day John Winchester showed up at his door. It had been about a week since New Years, and Sam had mentioned that his dad had already gone to America. But Gabe wasn't expecting this.

"Hello Gabriel," John said, as Gabe was standing there with wide eyes. "Uh...sorry about the surprise?"

"What no it's okay," Gabe said. "Wasn't expecting you, that's all. How did you know I live here?"

John shrugged. "I know a guy. Anyway, I know you and Castiel probably want to pick up my boys from the airport."

"Well duh," Gabe said.

"I have a present for Dean," John said, pulling out a set of keys from his pocket. "Take it to the airport with you?" Gabe eyed the keys before taking them. "It's the Impala out front."

"Oh wow, that car he's always wanted?" Gabe asked and John nodded. "Wow they're lucky to have you." John just smiled.

"I'll see you and Castiel around," John said, before waving and walking off. Gabe just looked at the keys in his hand before immediately going to call Cas.

~~

"Do we have everything?" Dean asked.

"Yes," Sam said.

"Absolutely everything?" Dean asked.

"Yes," Sam replied.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes!" Sam rolled his eyes. "We've checked the house three times. No important belongings have been left behind."

"Okay," Dean said. He picked up his suitcase. "Then let's go." Sam nodded and followed him out to the taxi they'd called to take them to the airport.

Of course, they stopped on the way to pick up Charlie.

"Sup bitches," she said as she bounced into the taxi. "Excited to meet your boyfriends?"

"I've never mentioned Cas to you, how the hell—"

"You didn't deny that he's your boyfriend, it's canon!" Charlie yelled and Dean gave her an exasperated look as Sam laughed.

"I feel like this is going to be a long trip," Dean said.

"30 hours from when we leave the airport here," Sam said. "That's including time between connecting flights.

"Oh fun," Charlie said. "I have shows to watch on the plane, you guys can share if you want."

"Hah...planes," Dean muttered darkly. Sam just smiled at him.

Soon they were at the Melbourne airport. Then they were checking in. And then they were waiting.

Sam looked down at his phone, before taking a photo of the airport and sending it to Gabe.

Gabey: YOU'RE IN THE AIRPORT

The humidity here is killing me by the way. And it was so hot today, before it started pouring with rain and there was thunder and lightning...a summer storm :P
