12| Trespass Sweetly Urged

Paloma silently ate her breakfast on the island counter as she watched her father read the newspaper across the room as he drank his coffee. Emiliano absently moved his food across his plate, he seemed to be fighting sleep and had no interest in eating. Like her father and brother, Paloma found that she had trouble sleeping. She could not stop thinking about the murders happening in Seattle.

"What do you think about what's happening in Seattle?" Paloma questioned as she looked between her father and brother, they both froze looking up at her like she had just sprouted wings.

"What do you mean?" Her father questioned calmly as he set his newspaper down. Everything about the way that her father was acting seemed rehearsed, like he was expecting this moment.

She didn't know if it was her distrust of her father that was giving her that impression, or if there was actually something that he was hiding. All that Paloma knew was that something felt wrong and that she could not ignore that feeling.

"I'm sure you've been reading about it in the paper." She continued as she looked to the newspaper that was sitting on the table. She wondered why he had begun to hide them now, or again maybe she was overthinking every odd detail. "There people going missing and getting murdered in Seattle. Thats only three hours from here."

Emiliano looked to their father, anticipating what he was going to say next. That slight reactions from her brother told her that she was heading towards the right direction. It confirmed that there was something going on that she did not know about.

"It's terrible." Rodrigo replied simply, and she didn't expect for them to say anymore. But their reaction was all that she wanted, proof that it wasn't all entirely in her head.

"Liano can you drive my friends and I to Port Angeles on Sunday?" Paloma asked wanting to change the subject, she didn't want them to think that she suspected anything of them.

"Why do you need to go to Port Angeles?" Her brother questioned as he looked to their father for his approval, when he was met with no reaction he looked back up at his sister waiting for her answer.

Paloma smiled as she attempted to seem as ignorant as she they believed her to be. Whatever they were hiding they clearly didn't want her to be a part of it. Even if it worried her she felt that maybe it was for the best that she remained ignorant.

"We want to go shopping. The winter formal is in two weeks." She told her brother honestly, she did want to go shopping for a dress for the school dance. Sure, she had plenty of dresses that she could choose from but she also wanted an excuse to get out of Forks. Even if it was only for a couple of hours.

Her brother seemed to relax at her response. Because of course she only cared about going shopping and having some fun. And if that was all they thought of her, then she would let them continue to believe so little of her.

Again Emiliano and their father went out for another hunting trip, and Paloma found herself alone again. She was always unsure whether she was grateful for the solitude. Or if she spending time with her family. Most teenagers would be happy being left home alone, but solitude did not suit Paloma very well.

Instead she went for a run though the woods, part of her hoping that she would lose herself. Even if was only for a moment, she had never dared explored the woods behind the house before. But now she was feeling a little but reckless.

She had run maybe half an hour before she came to a sudden stop as she felt the first drops of rain fall on her face. The skies had been clear in the morning, but she had not noticed when they had begun to turn grey.

"Shit." Paloma muttered hating the unpredictable weather of Forks. In California she didn't mind the rain, it was so rare that when the rains arrived they were welcome. In Forks there were weeks where the rain didn't stop, overstaying its welcome.

"You shouldn't be out here." Someone declared causing her to jump.

Paloma gasped as she turned around to meet a familiar set of honey colored eyes. She had to admitted that he had scared her, she hadn't expected anyone to be out in the woods. Especially not him. "Edward."

"Paloma." He said softly as he took a couple of step towards her.

She continued to look at him with disbelief. He frustrated her to no end with his tendency to keep reappearing in her life. Everyone, even Edward himself warned her to stay away. But how could she possibly stay away he made it impossible to not be on her mind even for a single day. It was like he always wanted to remind her that he existed. "You really need to stop doing this."

Edward looked at her as if he was truly confused about what she meant, but Paloma already knew him well. Knew the game that he liked to play. "What?"

"Just appearing out of nowhere." She replied slightly raising her voice at him. It wasn't until she yelled that she realized that she was angry, though she wasn't entirely sure was she was angry about.

Was it her father? The rain? Or was it Edward?

"What's wrong?" He asked her and she couldn't help but feel ashamed of snapping at him when he was not the reason for what was happening at home.

Paloma just looked at him for a moment his wet hair falling across his eyes. She wondered how it was possible the he almost looked even more beautiful under the rain.

"I'm just tired of Forks. I'm tired of moving to a new town or city every couple of months. Nothing is permanent." She admitted as she pushed her wet hair away from her face in frustration as the rain began o fall on them just a little but harder. "I don't know it just feels like I've lived a hundred lived but none of them have mattered. I know it sounds stupid..."

"No. It's not stupid at all." He replied with a small smile on his lips as he took another step towards her. "I know exactly how you feel."

"How?"

"My entire existence once felt meaningless. I struggled with finding a purpose, failing every time." Edward told her, and although she was skeptical before she found herself believing every word that he was saying. The tortured look in his eyes revealed that every words he spoke reflected what he truly felt. Although his golden eyes should have brought warmth there was a darkness in them that sent a chill through her. "It's like everything had been for nothing."

She noticed how he spoke in past tense, like those feelings were behind him. Though every word he spoke held an uncertainty. "And now?"

"Now?" He repeated that slight smile returning to his lips, his eyes never leaving hers as he continued. "Before my life felt like a moonless night. Dark, with little reason. Now, there's so many stars that life almost seems beautiful."

He reached forward pushing her wet hair behind her ear, reminding her that it was still raining down on them. He was so close and his words had fogged her mind that she could hardly register what he was doing. Edward's hand was at her cheek, and as he leaned forward Paloma snapped out of the trance that his words had put her in. Although her heart was beating rapidly in her chest in anticipation, there was a doubt her mind that she could not shake.

"Why are you in the woods?" She questioned, knowing that him also being out in the woods with her was something that she could not ignore. As much as she was attracted to Edward Cullen, she was no fool. Paloma knew that there was something about him that was dangerous. His words to her earlier although beautiful were also dark.

He smiled as he took a step back from her. And although his closeness was intoxicating, she was grateful for the distance.

"I was just going for a walk." He replied simply, like there was nothing odd about them happening to run into each other. Like it was only a coincidence, and maybe it was but she was beginning to grow cautious of everyone around her. Even her own family felt foreign to her now. "I'll walk you back to your house."

She was about to reject his offer, but she realized that he wasn't offering. He was telling her that he was going to walk her back to her house. Although she wasn't sure about it at first as she walked back towards her house it was like he wasn't there. He didn't speak a word, and Paloma couldn't find the words to fill that void.

They both had admitted things to each other that they probably regretted. It was best to leave those words behind them. And although there was still so much about Edward Cullen that she did not know, she felt satisfied with what he had admitted to her today. He would have kissed her if she let him, and the thought caused her to smile once she was finally home alone.

A/N: Only three more chapters left and they all just need editing so expect them soon. The last two chapters are my favorite that I've written so far. Enjoy.
