08| The Tale of Romeo and Juliet

Paloma lay on her bed starring up at the ceiling as she clutched the phone in her hand waiting for her older sister to pick up. They hadn't spoken since the move to Forks and although it had only been a little over a month it simply felt too long without Luciana. Especially when she felt like she couldn't be herself in her house.

"Hola mi Palomita. How's Forks?"  Luciana questioned, and Paloma could have sighed from relief at the sound of her sister's voice. Even if it was just through the phone.

Paloma sighed not sure whether she should lie to ease her older sister's worries. But she knew that Luciana would see through every single lie. "It's alright."

"Just alright? There's a boy isn't there?" Her sister attempted to tease, but the thought of boys only frustrated her more. When she first called her sister she didn't realize that it was to vent, but hearing her voice now made her realize just how much she needed someone to talk to. Sure she had Saira and Kennedy but they were only temporary parts of her life. They wouldn't understand. And Emiliano just want someone who she could turn to anymore.

"No. This is more than just a boy. This town is horrible. Dad and Liano are acting weirder than usual and it's unbearable."

"So not much has changed?"

Sitting up Paloma walked to her window, it was open and a cool breeze was coming in. After a long day of endless rain Paloma couldn't deny that she did like the earthy smell of Forks. Compared to the polluted air of Los Angeles it could be considered then only thing she enjoyed about the town. "Do you think that maybe you could stop by and visit for a couple of days?"

"I can't take a couple days from school. But I'll stop by during my winter break." Her sister offered but the thought of still being at Forks by time the holidays started soured her mood even more. She had expected their stay at Forks to be over with by Christmas, everyday that seemed more unlikely. Instead of complaining Paloma kept her mouth shut by biting her lip not want to give Luciana anymore reason to worry. "But tell me more about this boy."

"There really isn't much to tell." She replied as she rested her head on the cold glass of her window. It was so dark outside that it was impossible to see anything. But that emptiness helped her gather her thoughts, because there really wasn't much for her to say. Did she actually like Edward? They only had a handful of weird interactions but what did she really know about him? The answer was nothing. She knew nothing about Edward Cullen. So was that pull she felt towards him entirely physical? It had to be. "He's weird. But charming and beautiful. And for some reason dad an Liano hate him and his family."

"What did you say his name was again?" Luciana questioned the playfulness that was in her voice earlier was gone.

"Edward Cullen."

There was a long pause on the other end causing Paloma to stand up straight. There was something unsettling about that pause, Luciana wasn't someone to hold back on what she thought. "I know how dad can be. But he's not always wrong. Maybe just this once you should listen him."

Paloma didn't like that answer. As long as she could remember Luci had never once agreed with anything their father said. Growing up it had always been constant fighting between the two of them. Her suddenly agreeing with their father on a situation that she knew nothing about was unsettling. "Maybe this once I will."

"Te conozco Paloma. When someone denies you something that you want it makes you want it even more." Luci said in a stern tone, one that Paloma was very familiar with. She could defy her father all she wanted but one thing that Paloma Ibarra simply could not do was disappoint her older sister.

She looked up to Luciana and didn't want to start a fight between the two. So if Luci suggested that she stay away from Edward that was what she was going to do. Even if her sister didn't know what was going on in Forks she had to trust her judgment. Because Paloma wasn't entirely sure if she could trust her own.

"You don't have to worry about me Luci." Paloma assured her.

Again there was another long pause from Luciana, and at the moment Paloma would have done anything to know what was going through her sister's mind. "You're right it's Liano that I worry about."

"I have a lot of homework. I should probably go." Paloma said not wanting to touch on the subject of their brother knowing that if she told Luci just how much he had changed she would continue to worry more that she probably already was. And she wanted Luci to enjoy her time in New York, for so long she had been carrying the entire family's weight on her shoulders. "I miss you."

"Miss you too. Stay out of trouble." She said as one last warning before hanging up.

Paloma had called her sister thinking that in some way it would help her not feel so lonely and frustrated with everything going on in her life. Instead she found all the feelings that she felt before being intensified, with the added uneasiness that Luciana left behind. Now more than ever she wanted to leave Forks behind, but Rodrigo Ibarra was showing no desire to move.

Paloma stared blankly at the T.V. the black and white images displayed one the screen. She had seen other film versions of Romeo and Juliet including the version that they were currently watching from 1968, but according to Mr. Mooney this was the best. Not that Paloma really cared, it was the same story.

The same stupid teenagers. The same tragic ending.

She didn't care to pay any attention as her mind drifted back to her conversation with Luciana. It also wasn't easy to focus considering that Edward had decided to sit in the desk next to hers instead of his usual seat in the corner.

There had to be a reason why he had decided to change seats. But although she was curious, she chose to not think about the fact that he was sitting to her left. Instead her eyes wandered the room taking in her classmates who were either fighting sleep or completely focused on the movie. Mr. Mooney's lips moved as he whispered the words to the play under his breath.

Paloma had to focus on anything but Edward Cullen because she had told her sister that she would stay out of trouble. That she would listen to her father and just this once and stay away. She had to stay away from Edward Cullen.

Paloma felt as Edward leaned forward, but she refused to acknowledge his presence. "I was wondering if we could talk?"

"No." She immediately whispered in return.

"No?" He repeated, and although she wasn't looking at him she could hear the amusement in his voice. She knew that he had smiled, which was exactly the reason why she kept her eyes on the screen. "Why?"

Paloma kept her eyes on the screen watching the start of Act 2, the balcony scene, like it was the most interesting thing in the room and as if she hadn't seen the film before. Everyone else in the class was too focused on trying to stay awake or actually watching the movie to listen in to their conversation. "Just agreeing with you and my brother."

"About?"

"Well, staying away from you." She continued to whisper.

"Paloma I... I think it's for the best." Edward replied softly and it was impossible to know what he truly felt without being able to see him. But Paloma did have to recognize that she felt a hint of disappointment that he seemed willing to stay away. "But that's easier said than done."

A small smile touched her lips at his last words as she finally turned to face him. There was a small smile on his lips too but before either of them could say anything the light in the class suddenly turned on. It wasn't until the lights had come on the Paloma had realized that the movie had been paused.

"Mr.Cullen instead of distracting you classmates how about you repeat the last few lines of iambic pentameter to prove you're paying attention." Mr. Mooney said clearly irritated that his class was being interrupted. Everyone turned to face Edward, and Paloma couldn't help but feel the slightest bit amused at the situation that Edward no found himself in, even if Edward himself didn't seem the slightest but fazed.

"Of course." Edward replied as he sat up straight and faced their teacher.

"Go on."

"With love's light wings did I o'erperch these walls, For stony limit cannot hold love out; And what love can do, that dares love attempt. Therefore thy kinsmen are no stop to me."

He continued to recite as everyone looked at him with wide eyes. The girls in the room looked like they were falling in love with Edward Cullen all over again, while the rest of the class simply seemed annoyed. Edward was reciting more than what was asked of him, at first Paloma thought he was trying to show off.

But when he suddenly turned to meet her eyes she realized that it wasn't entirely the case. It was like he actually felt Shakespeare's words and was being swept up by them.

Before she was amused that Edward was being asked to recite Romeo and Juliet, but that was when she believed that he wouldn't know the words. Now she felt like she was being swept up by the words of a play that she had never particularly liked in the past.

"There lies more peril in thine eye than twenty of their swords. Look thou but sweet, And I am proof against their enmity."

"Eyes on the screen people." Mr. Mooney muttered as he turned off the lights and began to movie again.

Paloma held Edward's eyes for only a second longer before turning her attention back to the movie. He made no attempt to try to talk to her again. Like if he said everything that he needed to say. She only wished that she felt the same. Because now more than every she felt like she wanted answers to questions that she didn't even have.

Luciana had never agreed to with their father. And Paloma had never gone against Luciana's wishes. But just like her sister maybe Paloma could make an exception. Maybe just this once Paloma didn't have to do what Luciana suggested.

A/N: Had to bring back Luciana so you all don't forget about her. She will play a larger role later in the story, but we will have to wait to see her again unfortunately. The romance will start getting a little bit stronger as I'm going to start steering away from plot set up and beginning to write to actual plot. Have a lot of fun things planned for upcoming chapters and I can't wait for you all to read it!
