07| These Two Foes

Paloma hadn't realized just how much she missed the chaos of high school football games. Everyone wildly cheering as the high school band played in the background. The smell of greasy foods in the air as she focused on cheering for the Forks High School Spartans.

Oddly enough she found it all comforting, because no matter the school the games were always the same. It was a reminder of no matter how unstable her life was, that she was still just a teenager.

She also loved the fact that neither her father or her brother cared about high school football games and watching her cheer. That meant that at least for these couple of hours she didn't have to worry about being carefully watched at every moment. Like if she were a bird with a broken wing that needed constant supervision while being trapped in her golden cage.

At least for tonight her bright smile was genuine and she danced without a care in the world. Between cheer sets all the girls could only seem to gush about how attractive all the boys from La Push had gotten since last year. Although she had no idea what shape those boys were in last year there was no denying just how attractive every single one of them were.

It was all the girls could seem to talk about even as they waited for their bus to arrive outside of the La Push football field. Paloma couldn't seem to be able to make herself part of the conversation as she stood apart from the other girls too focused on the pain in her hand. During the game the adrenaline had kept her from feeling any of the pain she was actually in. Now she found herself annoyed.

"You looked great out there." A voice stated, causing Paloma to look up and meet the eyes of who she recognized as the quarterback for the La Push Wolves.

"Well you guys didn't look so great." Paloma teased even though she thought that it was odd that the La Push lost the game considering that every single one of them looked so much physically stronger than all the boys from Forks.

"We're having a bonfire party at La Push." He continued not at all fazed by her comment, clearly he had a larger ego than she thought. Not that she could really blame him, he had every reason to think highly of himself. His perfect bone structure and olive skin were everything a girl could ask for. "You should stop by."

Paloma looked up at the night sky, she had grown used to the rain in Forks. Even if she didn't particularly like it, she had learned the signs of an oncoming rain storm. "Looks like it's about to rain."

"Things are a lot more fun in the rain." The boy replied with a slight smirk on his lips.

"You really want to be talking to a girl from your rival school?"

"Makes it all the more exciting if you ask me." He said, his response causing her to smile. She always did like complicated and exciting things. One could say that she enjoyed putting herself in difficult situations, but she never saw any problem in that as long as she had a little fun.

"Come on Paul!" One of the other La Push boys yelled.

"I'll see you around." Paul said before running off to his other teammates who seemed to be teasing him.

He was cute, and had an arrogance to him that was both charming and just a little bit annoying. It reminded her of another boy that she knew was annoyingly arrogant but occasionally revealed a charm to him that he seemed to try to hide.

She hated that there was a good looking boy flirting with her and her mind immediately went to Edward. While Paul was hot, Edward was beautiful in a way that words couldn't explain.

"You should stay away from the boys from La Push." A familiar voice warned, and there was something satisfying in knowing that he had seen her interaction with Paul.

She let the smile that had formed on her lips slip as she turned around to meet Edward Cullen's honey colored eyes. There was no way that she would allow him to see that smile that had formed on her lips from just the sound of his voice. "Jealous?"

"I don't see them as a threat."

"I didn't think you were the type to come to football games." She said instead not entirely sure Edward had meant by his comment. Was it because he believed that she was too enamored by him to even consider one of the La Push boys?

She didn't like the idea. She didn't want to be like all the others in Forks that were mesmerized by anything having to do with the Cullens. She could resist him, sure he had an alluring quality to him but even she had to admit that the main reason why she continued to allow him close was because she wanted to defy her father and brother. To her this was becoming a game.

And if she could get Edward Cullen to fall for her when he looked down at everyone else, then that would make their little pit stop at the horrible town of Forks a little interesting.

"I'm not." He replied simply.

She narrowed her eyes at him, everything about him confusing and exciting. At that moment a light rain fell upon them, but neither of them seemed to care."Then what are you doing here?"

He didn't reply to her question as he took a single step towards her, and she hadn't realized just how close they already were. Surprisingly Edward reached forward his thumb softly brushing her cheek bone. She held her breath for a moment she watched him take in his glitter stained finger.

Her glittery makeup had begun to run down her cheeks, something that seemed to amuse him. "This is a lot of glitter."

"There's nothing wrong with a little bit of sparkle."

For the first time Paloma saw Edward genuinely smile as he seemed to study her. She didn't understand why her words caused him to smile, but she knew that she wanted to see that smile again."There is too much of a good thing."

"Is there?" She questioned because in her experience good things didn't come very often and if they did they were taken away. Right now, the way that Edward made her feel. Like something exciting was about to happen, she wanted to continue to feel more of that. Even if it felt dangerous. "What game are you playing?"

"I didn't realize I was playing any games." Edward replied and when she said nothing in return he took a step back. Almost like he needed there to be more space between the two of them. Paloma watched him carefully and how every single one of his movements seemed practiced and precise. "It's... a lot harder than you would think."

"What?" Paloma asked even if she knew she shouldn't hear the answer to her question.

"Trying to stay away from you." He replied with an intensity in his eyes that made it seem as if they had grown darker. But that intensity wasn't that shocked Paloma, it was the sincerity in his words.

"Paloma!" Someone called out, and although their voice didn't entirely register in her mind Palmoa turned, seeing Kennedy and Saira wavering her over from beside the bus. She hadn't even realized that the bus had long ago arrived and they were all waiting on her.

"Go." He ordered, and although Paloma wasn't one to take orders from anyone his words felt like a warning. And just this once she listened as she began to walk away, turning around to take one last look at him only to find that he was gone.

Almost like he was never there. She couldn't completely wrap her mind around why she suddenly felt like she needed to put some space between her and Edward. But deep down she knew why. Maybe she wasn't as strong as she thought.

Maybe she wasn't entirely immune to temptation.

"Get it girl." Kennedy teased once Paloma had reached them.

"What?" Paloma questioned her mind still reeling from her conversation with Edward. So many things felt incredibly wrong, but they were overshadowed by the sense of excitement that she felt every time she was in his presence.

"The La Push boy and Edward?" Her friend continued studying Paloma who had long forgotten about Paul.

"The boy that Bella's dating. You said he was from the reservation too?" She questioned not that she cared too much about Bella and the boy but their relation to Edward. His warning suddenly clicking her mind as she remembered Ken having mentioned that Bella left Edward for a boy from La Push. Because that explained why Edward had seemed apprehensive and maybe a little annoyed of the boys from La Push.

Paloma couldn't help but feel like maybe there was more to what happened between Edward, Bella and that boy than was public knowledge.

"Yeah Jacob Black." Kennedy confirmed.

"Very hot." Saira added, causing her girlfriend to roll her eyes. But Kennedy wasn't the jealous type, and she seemed a lot more worried about Paloma's odd behavior.

"I have an idea." Kennedy stated as they stepped into the noisy bus. Everyone had already settled in their seats and all eyes seemed to be on Paloma as she walked to her seat behind Saira and Kennedy. There was no doubt that they were curious as to why she was talking to Edward Cullen. Or to why Edward Cullen had suddenly taken an interest in school events. "How about a beach day at La Push?"

"That sounds nice." Paloma replied feeling her mood brighten immediately at the suggestion. She really did miss California and its sunny beaches. And maybe a little getaway from Forks was just what she needed to clear her mind.

A/N: Sorry for the long wait on this chapter. For some reason  it took me forever to get right. But had to make things a little more interesting by adding our favorite werewolf boys.
