03| Where Two Raging Fires Meet

After a week in Forks one would have assumed that Paloma would have at least accepted her doomed fate. Sure, she had found friends in Saira and Kennedy but they were only as temporary as the other friends she had made in the past.

But there was something different about Forks. Rodrigo Ibarra had always been a little odd, but now more than ever he seemed on edge. His tolerance for Paloma and her tendency for dramatics lower than ever. There was a time when Rodrigo spoiled Paloma to no end, she was the youngest of the three Ibarra children after all. But Rodrigo simply wasn't the man that he was before.

And Paloma missed the father that she lost. And a part of her still hoped that he would finally wake up from his grief.

"I'm starting cheer practice after school today." Paloma announced as she and Emiliano walked across the parking lot towards Forks High. They were running a little later than usual and most of the students were already inside the building.

The trip to school had been silent after their brief fight over Paloma taking too long to get ready in the mornings. But Paloma would always choose being late over not finishing her make-up and being properly dressed.

"You didn't tell us you were joining cheer again." Emiliano replied, he should have expected it. She always joined cheer at every school they attended. He never really could understand how quickly she would adjust to every school, even if it was all an act.

Palmoa sighed as she quickened her pace towards the school ready to get the day over with already. "Well if we're staying in this shitty town with nothing to offer, I might as well do the only thing that brings a little joy to my life."

"You're being a little dramatic don't you think?"

"I'm dramatic, you know this. But so are you. We grew up watching telenovelas." Paloma remarked, earning a chuckle from her brother. It was rare that the two siblings bonded or that Emiliano really laughed. Coming to a stop Paloma was about to face her brother before the sound of screeching car tires against the pavement had her frozen in place. The silver Volvo stopping only an inch before her. The fear that had paralyzed her now replaced by burning anger, "What the actual fuck!?"

Her heart was racing as she marched to the driver's side of the car. The window was already down, the driver sitting stiffly in his seat. She had never seen him before, and although she was far from getting to know everyone at Forks High, there was no way that she would look past him.

He was strikingly beautiful. All his visible features were perfectly angular, and his messy bronze hair came with the desire for her to run her finger through it. His skin so pale, almost like every other resident of Forks, the only difference being that she couldn't find a single imperfection. It was almost like he was made of marble, like a Greek statue. She knew without a doubt that this was Edward Cullen.

He was just as perfect as his adoptive siblings and Paloma wondered how that could be.

"What the hell asshole?" She yelled at the driver, his eyes hidden behind a pair of designer sunglasses even though the sun was nowhere to be seen.

"Maybe you should watch where you're going?" He replied dismissively, his hands slowly tightening around the steering wheel to the point where Paloma was sure he would crush it in his hands. It seemed that the guy had some serious anger issues, but that didn't faze her.

Paloma's mouth opened slightly in shock. No one had ever spoken to her that way, and as she looked at the boy's eyes through his darkly tinted sunglasses all she wanted to do was knock them off his perfect face. "Maybe you shouldn't drive into the parking lot like you own the place?"

"Come on Paloma." Emiliano said quietly as he got a hold of his sister's arm and began pulling her away from the car.

Although she allowed Emiliano to pull her away, Paloma's eyes followed the silver car as it parked across three parking spots in the far end of the lot. The action only caused her to become even more angry, as she turned to her brother with wide eyes.  "And then the asshole takes up three parking spots. Who the hell does he think he is?"

"Just forget about it, Palomita."

Paloma came to a stop at the top of the steps as she turned around to face her brother in shock. Not only had he failed to stand up for her in the parking lot, but now he was asking her to brush the incident away as if it didn't matter. "Forget about? Liano he almost ran me over."

"Don't go looking for trouble." Her brother urged, and there was something about the seriousness of his voice that made her drop the subject altogether. Although both siblings weren't much for fun and games, Liano had never been this deadly serious. It unsettled Paloma to the point where she actually wanted to be away from her brother.

"Fine." Paloma replied quietly as she headed into the school without another word.

Her heart was still racing as he walked through the hallway towards her locker. She could still feel some people's curious eyes even after one week. But like always she kept her head held eyes and embraced all the attention that was given to her. When she finally reached her locker Paloma sighed in an attempt to keep all her conflicting emotions in order.

"Edward Cullen's back." Kennedy practically yelled from behind Paloma causing her to jump. She had to bite back a scream as she looked at the other girl with annoyance before going back to opening her locker. Normally Paloma wouldn't have been so irritated but considering what had happened in the parking lot only a couple of minutes before she was still a little on edge.

Suddenly the hallway seemed to go silent, and out of instinct the two girls turned and looked around following the direction of where the other students were staring. At the school entrance where the Cullens had entered the building. Everyone watched quietly as the adoptive sibling made their way through the hallway, Edward Cullen being the last one walking on his own.

She met his honey colored eyes and she was sure she had never seen eyes that beautiful. She understood why everyone was infatuated with him, it was almost like everything about him could draw someone in. Even through all the anger and frustration that she felt towards him, her heart was beating rapidly in her chest at how intensely he was holding her gaze. It almost sent a chill through her.

It wasn't until his adoptive sister, Alice Cullen, touched him softly on the elbow that he looked away from her. Paloma almost expected him to want to confront her again, his hands were in fists as if he was desperately fighting the urge to remain in control.

"So what do you think?" Kennedy questioned excitedly with wide eyes. It was almost like she wanted Paloma to completely gush over the teenage boy, a sentiment she couldn't completely understand considering Ken wasn't interested in boys. But if there was anyone at this damn school that was obsessed with everything related to the Cullen's it was Kennedy Harris.

"He's just a pretty boy." Paloma dismissed, attempting to seem unimpressed by the boy. "Every school has one, he's nothing special."

It wasn't a complete lie. Every school did have the one pretty boy that thought he was above it all. But none of them compared to Edward Cullen.

He had the same unnatural beauty that his other adoptive siblings had been blessed with, but there was something about Edward Cullen that was even more captivating. Maybe it was his perfect jawline or his honey colored eyes that looked like they held all the answers. But he definitely wasn't just some pretty boy.

Not daring another glance behind her towards the direction the Cullen siblings had disappeared, Paloma closed her locker. Her mind was suddenly flooded with dozens of questions that she would never voice out loud. "Why is everyone so obsessed with Edward Cullen anyway?"

"Edward has always walked around like no girl was good enough for him. Bella moves in and suddenly they're all over each other a couple of weeks later." Kennedy explained, and the news was interesting. There had to be a lot more to Bella Swan than one could even guess at if someone like Edward Cullen had become so incredibly infatuated with her. "And now Bella's dating this really hot boy from La Push. But that's honestly Edwards fault he and his family left for half of sophomore year. Bella had every right to move on."

Paloma wasn't sure what she thought of everything related to the Cullens. The more she learned about them the more she found herself both conflicted between wanting to learn more and not wanting anything to do with them. It was an incredibly frustrating feeling, but ultimately she realized that they were just normal teenagers.

Sure they were impossibly good looking and unarguably weird, but that was no reason to put the Cullens up on some pedestal. Forks was simply just too small of a town that found itself fascinated by anything that was just slightly out of the ordinary.

In a town of boringly ordinary people, it was only natural for people as odd as the Cullens to stand out in the crowd.

It seemed that everyone at Forks High was incapable of discussing anything other than Edward Cullen and his sudden return to school. By the end of the day Paloma was sick of hearing the name Edward Cullen being whispered down the halls.

It was already frustrating enough that she had both AP English and Chemistry with him. And although she might have been imagining it, she couldn't shake the feeling that he was staring at her throughout both classes. Oddly enough for her she wasn't brave enough to turn around and confirm her suspicions. Instead she played with the pendant around her neck nervously, a habit she had realized she picked up when they moved to Forks.

Now as she changed in the girl's locker room to get ready for practice, she still couldn't stop thinking about his honey colored eyes. There was something that was both alluring and unsettling about them. She was disgusted for herself for being just as captivated by Edward Cullen as everyone else at the school was.

"Hey are you okay?" Kennedy questioned as she looked at Paloma skeptically. The other girl was very aware that Paloma seemed to have her issues and that everything about her was incredibly practiced. Seeing the new girl suddenly go from not being able to be affected by anything to being troubled was unusual. "You've been weird all day."

"This morning Edward Cullen almost ran me over." Paloma replied the memory once again causing irritation to take hold of her. She wasn't sure why she couldn't let it go, but the memory had been replaying in her head all day. Maybe it was the teenage boy's entitlement or the fact that she truly believed she was going to die when the car stopped only an inch away. But Palmoa wanted to confront Edward about the situation again.

Ken's eyes went wide as she stood meeting Paloma's eyes. "What? Why didn't you tell me this morning?"

"Because its still fucking pissing me off." Paloma replied as she also got to her feet. "You know he blamed me for it."

"Yikes." The other girl replied, flinching at Paloma's tone.

"And then he took up three parking spots. Three!"

"Yeah he does that." Kennedy replied with a shrug as she watched Paloma put her dark hair in a high ponytail. "Was it his fault though?"

Paloma opened her mouth ready to place all the blame on Edward, before she realized that it would have been a lie. That she was partially at fault for their terrible encounter this morning. But that was something that she was never going to admit to.

"How about you start introducing me to the team?" Paloma questioned instead, finding that she suddenly wanted to change the subject.

Deciding it was best not to push Paloma, Ken nodded and gestured for her to follow. "Just so you know you have a lot of catching up to do. Our first game is against La Push High in two weeks."

Listening intently as Kennedy caught her up on all the schedule of all the upcoming school events and football games, for once since Paloma first day at Forks she found herself excited. Like she was going back to her element. She had always been the cheerleader, the popular girl at school who dated the jock. That was the persona she had adopted at every stop her father decided to make.

But since coming to Forks it was like she had lost herself in the crowd. Like she had almost given up on who she was. Whether they stayed at Forks for another month or the rest of the school year she had to make sure that when she left they wouldn't forget about her. That Forks High would remember Paloma Ibarra, because there was nothing worse than living a life where you were forgotten.

A/N: Our boy Edward is finally here! Things are about to get angsty and let me tell that these two will find it hard to keep away from each other. I am going to be sprinting a lot of references to Romeo and Juliet here. Consider Bella to be Rosaline in this story. Very excited about the next chapter. Hope that you all have been enjoying.
