Afterdeath - Nothing lasts forever
AN: This story has been on my mind all week, so I finally wrote it. It was inspired by a video I watched on YouTube, I'll link it in the bottom of the chapter to avoid it from spoiling the story. The video on top is what I listen to when I wrote this.
If this chapter makes you cry, go teary eyed or feel sad please comment and tell me. I want to know if I made the idea justice or not.
"So... how are you and Palette doing? Nervous for your big day?"Geno teased.
Goth blush brightly in embarrassment but smiled sweetly seemingly lost in his own daydream for a moment.
"It's great mom, he is the most wonderful person in the world."
"Guess it's lucky you marry him next month then or someone else would have snatched him up in a heartbeat."
"Nah, he would not let something like that happen, he loves me too much to. I always dreamed of finding true and eternal love like you and dad, and he is it." Goth seems to be in bliss, most likely fantasizing about Palette.
Geno forces himself to chuckle a little.
"I'm sure you two will stay strong together for a very long time."
"Forever." Goth mutters quietly to himself as he completely fly of into dreamland. His head rest itself on the kitchen table and Geno quickly moves his son's teacup to the other side of the table so that it is not accidentally knocked over.
"Eternal love? Somedays I wonder..."
Geno sighs to himself. Reaper had been working a lot the last few months and when he did come home he was to exhausted to spend any time with Geno.
When had they last had a decently long conversation with each other?
'When was the last time Reaper had shown him any affection besides the tired kisses on his cheek when his husband returned home?'
Geno did not know.
All he could do was believe that everything would turn back to normal when Reaper got less work he had to do. Until then, he would do everything in his power to make sure his son's wedding was the best it could be. Goth deserved the best.

*RIINNGG!!!*
The doorbell ring for a second time before Geno arrives to open it, curious to know who it is. He was not expecting visitors today.
On the other side of the door is Reapers brother, his brother-in-law, Papyrus.
Normally, Geno would welcome unexpected visits from family but Papyrus facial expression indicated that this was not a friendly visit.
He could feel his soul being filled with dread.
"I am sorry Geno but this is not a social visit. I'm here on business it's your time to go. You where written on today's list."
Geno shakes his head desperately in denial. "Please Papyrus, not yet. Please, not before my son's wedding, please."
Papyrus gaze softens, he had always considered Geno a dear friend and this situation pained him.
"I'll give you until after my nephews wedding, but no longer then that. You are mortal Geno, you have to go eventually and I cant make any more exceptions."
Geno nods resigned, there was rules to be followed in the multiverse for a reason. He had already escaped death once before, this was his fate.
Papyrus turn to leave but stops and explain.
"You where due today Geno. If you want to make it to the wedding you will have to do so using your own determination. So... stay determined my friend."
And with that Geno is left alone at the front door of the house.

"What...!"
Geno could feel the world around him starting to shatter but the pieces stubbornly stuck together until the bitter end.
"Y-you....you c-cheated on me with Life?" He could feel his magic forming tears in his left eye socket but they did not yet fall.
"Yeah." Reaper admits casually, like it was nothing. Like it was a simple thing that could be dismissed, like our marriage of twenty years meant nothing.
The cracks in the world grows more numerous.
"Why?" Geno almost choke on the word.
Reaper look at him like the answer to the question was obvious.
"I merely fell in love with someone else." He pick up and places a stack of paper on the coffee table between them. "So I would like you to sign these papers as soon as possible so we can get it over with."
Geno picks up the papers with shaky hands, and reads it. 'Divorce paper, he wants to be rid of me' At that thought the world finally falls to pieces around him and the tears fall.
Geno can feel himself collapsing onto the floor never having the chans to sit down before Reaper admitted to his affair.
He had never felt more broken, not in this way.
His world was crumbling around him and his husband, his cheating soon-to-be-ex-husband only sat there calmly, like it did not concern him in the slightest.
Reapers face did not show a hint of regret and Geno realized that he had lost Reapers love a long time ago. What reason did the god of violent deaths have to love a broken skeleton like him. What reason had an immortal to love a lowly mortal.
Would not another immortal be more logical, another god or goddess.
He remembers Goth's words from one week earlier.
"...I always dreamed of finding true and eternal love like you and dad, and he is it."
'Eternal love? How foolish." Yet he could not help but wish that his son would gain what had been impossible for Geno to hold from the start. Palette was the son of two gods and Goth was the son of one, they were both immortal so it could last forever.
Geno's soul hurt as he remember his conversation with his brother-in-law earlier that day.
"I'll give you until after my nephews wedding, but no longer then that. You are mortal Geno, you have to go eventually and I cant make any more exceptions."
Geno nods resigned, there was rules to be followed in the multiverse for a reason. He had already escaped death once before, this was his fate.
Geno chuckles brokenly. 'Maybe this is for the better in the end? At least like this, Reaper would not be left heartbroken with my passing.'
But even with such thoughts he could help being just a little bit selfish, he deserved as much, after all it would be his last wish.
He forces himself to look at Reaper as he speaks.
"I-if you w-want a d-divorce so badly the l-least you could do i-s doing so on my terms. You owe me that much Reaper."
His vice stutters but Reaper only nods.
"What are your terms?" Reaper continues to use a tone of voice that makes it sound like it was all just a business deal and not the end of a twenty year long marriage. Scarlet tears keep falling down Geno's cheeks.
"My first condition is that the divorce will only be finalized until after Goth's marriage to Palette." 'It would ruin Goth's wedding day otherwise and I can not allow that.'
Judging from Reapers expression he seemed to know the reason to this request.
"And Goth is not to be made aware of this am I right?"
Geno nods.
"And? Any more conditions?"
"Only one."
It is in this condition in which he is selfish.
"For the last remaining weeks of our marriage" He has to stop himself there tying not to choke, before continuing. "I want you to watch the sunset with me exactly like be used to every night."
Reaper raises an eyebrow (or the skeletal equivalent of one) in surprise at the odd request. Luckily he see no reason to deny it.
"Is that all?"
"That is all Reaper."
Reaper grabs the papers and leaves, likely to fix papers containing the new conditions. To him the whole thing had not seemed to hold any emotional weight. It was only business.
Geno should hate him for what he had just done. For leaving him worrying for months while he was out cheating on him. For pushing all this on him and leaving him crying himself to sleep on the floor.
For shattering both his world and soul.
But he could not, not really.
Because despite everything, Geno loved Reaper from the bottom of his soul.
And Reaper no longer loved him back, that was what hurt the most.
***
The first time Reaper watch the sunset with him is awkward. They sit side by side as if they where strangers and not a (still) married couple. Geno did not dare to cuddle up to Reaper like he used to, not when Reaper no longer felt anything towards him. Reaper on the other had only wanted the whole thing to be over and done with.
***
The second time goes much the same.
***
By the third time, Geno finally dares to cuddle up to Reaper. "Wh...?" "Shush. My condition stated 'as we used to'" Reapers protests fade before they are said and Geno pretends like they are still back in the time in which Reaper still loved him, and only him. He desperately tries to not cry at the reminder of what he lost, it is only a question of time before he runs out of tears to cry.
***
The fifth time, they try to talk to each other, to talk about things that don't really matter. At one point Geno finds himself so caught up in the moment that he forgets the circumstance and smiles. It is only a small smile and it disappears as fast as it came, but it had been more genuine then any smile he had had in Reapers presence in the last few months.
***
One and a half week into their routine there is moments where they joke and tease each other, but only moments. Afterwards reality kicks in and Geno has to remind himself that they are no longer wo friends falling in love in the save screen, but a couple waiting out the days to their divorce.
His soul keep on feeling like it will shatter at any moment.
He can not let it show however. Goth is not allowed to know how broken his 'mother' has become.
Geno keeps going through the heartache, for his son's sake.
***
In the beginning of the third and last week of their agreement, Reaper gifts Geno with a single yellow rose in full bloom. Geno appreciates the gift as he remembers that a yellow rose stands for friendship. He may not have Reapers love anymore, but at least he might have his friendship. If nothing else, he is grateful that Reaper tries to honor his final request of him and act like they where still in a happy marriage.
Maybe it will sooth his should just a little when he lay on his deathbed.
He can feel his bones grow weaker as time goes on, but he can still stand up and he will walk on the day of his sons wedding, he is determined.
***
When the day for Goths wedding finally arrive, Geno goes to speak to Palette well before the ceremony is about to begin. He does so to make sure that they speak in private.
"What did you want to speak to me about Mr. Geno?"
Palette's tone is nervous, likely because of his soon-to-transpire- wedding. Or maybe it was because the 'mother' of his bride has requested to speak to him in private, the reason did not matter to Geno.
"I would like you to promise me something before the wedding, Palette. I'm afraid I will not get the chance to ask you afterwards."
The words might have calmed the younger slightly, not that Geno paid any attention to if it did.
"What do you want me to promise you?" Palette's tone is solemn, as if already knowing the weight of the promise yet to be requested of him.
Geno take a firm grip, as firm as he can be as he is slowly dying, around his soon-to-be son-in-law and watch him with a very serious gaze.
"Promise me to always stay faithful to Goth and that if you ever find yourself falling out of love with him, to try you hardest to fall in love with him again."
The request seems to startle Palette, and for a few moments he only stare at the older. The he answers with much conviction.
"There should be no need for promises like that, I love Goth with all my soul and can not imagine ever stop loving him. But if it will put you at ease I will promise you what you asked me to. After all, the wedding vow is meant to last '...till death do us part'"
Geno smiles sadly at Palettes word, seeing them as being naive. 'Nothing lasts forever.'
But Palette did still agree to make the promise requested of him and Geno could feel how his worry over his son's future lessened.
***
The wedding ceremony, and the celebrations that follows are bittersweet for Geno. Throughout it all, Reaper keeps acting like he is still in love with Geno as much as Palette is in love with Goth. Geno really should be grateful for the act, but it hurt for him to constantly remind himself that it is just an act to make Goth happy. That it is just an illusion that will shatter once the celebration ends, once the divorce is finally finalized and it is his turn to dust.
***
When the newly wedded couple leaves the festivities, Geno does not stay. He return to the house he had called home for the last twenty-five years alone, Reaper having disappeared somewhere. Maybe he was with Life?
The house is dark and does no longer feel like a home. Instead it had turned into Geno's personal hell. There was no warmth left, nothing to comfort him. All that was left was bitter reminders of what once was, of what could never be.
He had not wanted to return here, but he had nowhere left to go. He was to weak to return to the lonely save screen. So this lonely house it was, anywhere else would not guarantee he would not be disturbed.
Geno let himself collapse on the large bed that now lacked the same warmth the whole house had once had. He could no longer stand, his determination was running out, what reason did he have to continue?
All his old family and friends where dead.
Reaper, the love of his life, no longer wanted or loved him. All that awaited him with Reaper was a divorce that would never need to be finalized.
And Goth, his beautiful boy, was safe and happy in the embrace of his new husband.
There was no reason left to stay.
So he let go.
He gave up and the last drops of determination ran out.
Slowly, he could feel his body turn to dust.
Geno could see his whole life play out before him and could not help but laugh hollowly on last time as he remembered Palettes words. It being his last thought as he turn to dust.
''..till death do us part', how true those words are proven to be. Whether by divorce or dust, death will be what makes us part ways. Funny isn't it, Reaper?'
BONUS?\Continuation?

(POV Change?)
When Reaper had told Geno of his affair with Life he had felt nothing, neither did he feel anything when he requested the divorce and the other collapsed on the floor crying. He felt nothing, Geno was just another broken mortal. He had seen many of those, there was nothing unique about him.
But a part of him acknowledged that this was the mortal he had promised eternity to, as such he saw no reason to deny Geno the right to set the conditions. However strange those conditions may have been.
That first night, watching the sunset was not really worth mentioning. There had been no word exchanged, no physical contact.
The second time was much the same.
When Geno cuddles up to him during their third outing he is surprised, but the others reasoning is sound. The deal did state that the outings should be like those they used to take. Back when they would cuddle under the stars and bask in each others company.
He had forgotten how it had been back them. What had changed?
The fifth night they spend talking about meaningless things. Reaper found it to be a rather refreshing change from their awkward silence. And when he catches the sight of Geno's smile he feels himself lost in it's beauty, sadly it only lasted a minute. That smile makes him think further, when was the last time he had seen Geno smile so genuinely? And why did that smile still make his hearth skip a beat?
Halfway through the three weeks they joke with and tease each other like they did back when they still meet up in the save screen. Back when Geno was still trapped there. It is the most enjoyable experience Reaper can remember having in a very long time, and he finds himself rediscovering so many reasons why he had fallen in love with Geno in the first place.
When the last week comes Reaper gives Geno a single yellow rose in full bloom, yellow for joy and friendship, and a single rose in full bloom to say I Love You; I Still Love You. Reaper was almost sure now, almost sure he regretted cheating, regretted asking for a divorce. Because he was beginning to rediscover the love he had believed he had left behind for good.
'Since when had Geno grown so weak? Had he really been so blind?'
When Goth's wedding finally happens he finds himself only have eyes for Geno. 'When was the last time he saw his husband so happy?' He heard the wedding vows and saw the love his son had for his new husband and he remembered his own wedding to Geno. Had he not made the same vows? Had he not been as in love with Geno as Palette was in Goth? Was he not now breaking this promises of love to the one he had long ago decided to spend eternity with?
Reaper felt his soul ache at the broken promise. He would show Geno that he still loved him, that he was sorry. Reaper was struck with the thought that maybe that the single yellow rose in full bloom had not been enough.
So when the married couple left the celebration to visit Life, both to break of their affair and gather a single red rose to show his love and purple hyacinth to say that he was sorry.
But when he return home (had it always been so cold and dark?) there seems to be no one there, there is no Geno that answer his calls.
At first he thinks that maybe his husband had already fallen asleep, as his visit to Life had taken longer then he had expected.
But when he reaches the bedroom all he finds is a pile of pure white dust and a red scarf.
Reapers world is filled with cracks, he knew better then most how monster dust looked like. There was no doubt that it was Geno's.
He felt his brothers presence behind him and he lets himself fall down on his knees, his brothers presence solidifying this horrible reality before him.
His brother speaks.
"It was his time, brother. Such is the fate of all mortals. He already outlived it by three weeks."
Reaper starts sobbing. He had known, of course he had. He knew that Geno would be forced to leave one day, that the vows they shared would only last as long as Geno's mortal lifespan. He had know and still promised him forever. In the end it had not really lasted either of their life spans had it? Reaper had forgotten about Geno's mortality, that his time had a limited. Despite it all he had wasted what time he had the chance to spend with such a wonderful person, the one he had loved despite all rim and reason.
It was all to late to make up for his mistakes, there was no time left.
Dreading the answer he asks.
"W-what was the cause of death?"
"He died of a broken soul, brother."
Reaper tries to keep himself from falling apart completely...
...as his world shatters around him.
AN: Well that's it, over 3000 words, never thought I would actually manage to write this one. Here is the video that inspired it, check it out if you feel like it.
