I Wasn't Ready (Countryhumans, Canada & Finland)
(Genders are based off of the country's French name.)
Requested by Gashver.
Canada stood in front of the funeral home, scared as hell to take the next steps. Everything had happened too quickly. He hardly even remembered what had taken place over the last couple of months. It felt like one day Finland had just gotten sick, and then that was it.
Seeing his kids already inside with their aunts and uncles and cousins, he decided he needed to be brave for them. He still had a reason to keep trying, right? So he took the steps he needed to get inside.
"You alright Nada?" America walked up to his little brother. "You look pale."
Canada shook his head. It wasn't like he could lie to Ame anyways. His brother had known him long enough that he could tell.
"You know we're all here for you, right?" New Zealand came next. She put a hand on her brother's shoulder. "We know this is hard on you. We'll be here for anything you need."
"If you ever want to be alone and need someone to look after the kids, I can take them." Australia offered.
Canada thanked them, but he couldn't shake his grief. His heart sank further when the service started. Everything was just a blur. He couldn't even remember what he'd said during his speech. Just that he felt like he was repeating how much he loved his wife over and over and over again. Emotions washed over him in waves. Tears built up in his eyes and slid down his cheeks, dropping onto the photos he held in his trembling hands. The photos of the two of them, together.
They were so young. These were only taken a few years ago. They both thought they'd have so much more time together. He found that the longer he held the photos, the harder it was to take his eyes off of her. Even after she was gone he was still in love. This was the woman he was supposed to grow old with, and she'd been taken away so quickly. Life was so unfair.
The room had cleared out now. It was just him and the casket left. He walked up to it, barely keeping himself steady. There lay his beautiful wife, the love of his life, with a peaceful look across her face. It was as though she were sleeping. Canada knew better.
"I wasn't ready..." He sobbed. "I wasn't ready for you to leave me like this..."
Sorry this is so short! This is the first countryhumans thing I've written in a long time, and also one of the only really angsty things I've written, so it's probably bad and I did need some time to get back into it. I've also been experiencing writer's block recently, so between that and school, this is the best I can come up with right now.
