HP- The Mystery of Edith Lane//George
"It's Hobbs and Shaw." Edith said as she sat in the Gryffindor common room, lounging on the couch, reading the Daily Prophet. Fred and George Weasley plopped down on either side if her.
Edith and the twins had been friends since first year, when she'd caught them jinxing the Slytherin pumpkin juice in the kitchens as she was stealing a snack. They'd all frozen at first, worried they'd been caught in their crimes, but then began to laugh when they had realised they were all doing something they weren't supposed too. Edith had proceeded to help them jinx the juice before they'd all stolen muffins, and fled the kitchens giggling.
"You know, after all these years," Fred started, as he leaned his head on Edith's shoulder, and she simply raised a brow at him, before continuing to read as George finished for him.
"We're begining to think you don't know our names." The other twin said as he rested his legs over the top of hers, which were propped up on the coffee table. Edith snorted, and without lifting her head, pointed to her left then her right.
"Fred. George." She stated plainly as she turned the page of the Prophet. Fred and George grinned at each other before looking back at their friend, and accomplice.
"Wrong way round actually." George said with a smirk.
"I'm rather insulted that after all these precious years of devoted friendship," Fred said with mock hurt, as he snatched the Prophet from his friends hands, as she pinned him with an unimpressed glare.
"That you still can't tell us apart." George finished again. Edith rolled her eyes and crossed her arms.
"I was right actually, but whatever floats your boat, I suppose." Edith said with a shrug. The twins stared at her, scrutinising her features for any hint of doubt. When she showed none, the pair glanced at each other before grinning again.
"I suppose you are a true friend then." George said as he flopped back against her. Fred turned to face her, his legs crossed underneath him.
"So why do you always call us weird names?" Fred asked as he furrowed his brows at Edith. George straightened with agreement.
"Like Batman and Robin." George said.
"Or Luigi and Mario." Fred added.
"Lelo and Stitch."
"Vip and Vap."
"Sherlock and Watson."
"Okay, okay, I get the point." Edith stopped them before they could continue. It was true, since the day she had met the twins, she'd very rarely called them by their names, often opting for odd, muggle duo's, or things like 'George of the Jungle', 'Freddie Mercury' or just Georgie George, and Freddy-ess, Fred.
"I just like nicknames, they're fun." Edith explained, with a shrug of her shoulders and raise of her hands. The twins looked at her with mild disappointment, like they were expecting some grand story.
"I mean, I don't go by my real name." Edith added as an after though, as she lowered her hands and picked back up her paper, from where Fred had tossed it on the table.
"You mean Eedie (E-dee)?" Edith shook her head 'no', and opened the paper up to where she'd left off.
"Nope. My names not really Edith Lane." Edith stated half-hazardly, acting as though it were no big deal. She held down her grin as she watched the twins stare at her, waiting for her to continue. When she didn't Fred snatched back her paper. Edith smiled, not entirely bothered by the action, having seen it coming this time.
"Whatta ya mean Edith Lane isn't your real name?" George questioned in exasperation, as they both faced her. Edith grinned and shook her head at the pairs antics.
"I don't go by my birth name." Was all she said.
"Then what's your real name?" Fred asked.
"I'm not telling you, and good luck trying to figure it out." She replied as she kicked George's legs off her and stood up from the sofa, stretching her arms high in the air with a yawn. It was early Saturday afternoon, and she fancied herself a nap before dinner.
"We'll just have to find the Hogwarts Enrolment Lists." George said as the pair stood with triumphant smiles. Edith grinned, and their confidence wained.
"It'll do you no good. I'm enrolled under my preffered name." Edith said with satisfaction as she turned on her heels, and marched up the stairs to the girls dorms.
Fred and George looked at each other for a few seconds, before they both silently agreed. They would put all their time and effort into discovering Edith's real name.
Fred and George spent the next two weeks trying their best to find out Edith's real name.
Naturally the first plan was to contact her family, but Edith was an orphan, and had come straight from a shabby run down orphanage, and now lived at Hogwarts. It was one of the reasons she spent every holiday at the Weasley's.
The little orphanage didn't keep any records, and so the boys constantly found themselves drawing up blanks. How the hell were they supposed to figure out her name now? That's when the boys remembered the, oh so helpful, yet slightly unethical, Veritaserum.
"Good morning, our nameless friend." George said as he slid onto the bench beside Edith. It was Friday morning, and the breakfast hall was slowly beginning to fill with hungry students.
"Still trying are you?" Edith smirked as she bit into her toast, and glanced up at the pair, as Fred took up the place on her other side. Across from Edith, was none other than early riser, Hermione, from a few years bellow them. Hermione looked between the twins and the brunette in confusion.
"Oh we'll figure it out." Fred nodded with surety. Edith rolled her eyes and looked to Hermione.
"I set them a challenge, and they've finally met their match. It's rather entertaining actually." She explained as Hermione nodded in understanding, not sure she wanted to know what it was, considering the trios history.
"Your confidence is misplaced. Fred and I, never give up." George grinned as Edith watched him with a raised brow.
"Yeah, maybe you should start." She smirked in triumph as George scoffed.
Behind Edith's turned head, Fred popped the cork of a small vial, and tipped the contents into the brunettes cup. At the same time Hermione looked up, and Edith blindly reached for it.
As Edith gripped her cup and brought it to her lips, Hermione's eyes widened and George's grin grew.
"Wait, no!" Hermione shot to her feet and Fred's eyes widened in shock.
But it was too late. Edith had already swallowed.
She lowered the cup with furrowed brows of concern.
"What?" She looked between the three, as the twins began to smirk, and Hermione's eyes dropped closed in regret. She slumped back into her seat.
"They put something in your drink." She mumbled out, disappointed she hadn't caught it in time. Edith's face dropped, and the colour drained from her face. She had played a dangerous game. She should've known the pair well enough to know they would never give up. Edith shakily pushed to her feet, swaying slightly as she stepped over the bench. Fred and George glanced at each other, their smiles gone, something wasn't right. Perhaps they had taken it too far?
Edith swayed slightly as she walked down the length of the table, towards the exit. The twins, frozen for a moment, quickly darted after her. As they exited the great hall, George wrapped his arm around Edith's waist to steady her, gripping her elbow as well. They quickly lead their queasy looking friend to a quiet hallway.
"We're so sorry Edith, we took it too far." George spoke softly, as the dark haired girl leant against him for support. Fred nodded in concern as they watched her eyes stare into space, occasionally wandering.
"Yes you did." It slipped past her lips unwarranted, the potion was working. George's chest felt rather tight. He'd always felt a little more strongly for Edith than his brother. He slid to the ground, taking Edith with him, as her legs crumpled beneath her.
Fred's brows furrowed in concern, what the hell were they supposed to do now? They'd have to let her wait out the effects, but somewhere where no one would find her, and ask questions.
"We're really sorry Edith. All this for a stupid name, when it doesn't really matter what we call you, as long as we can still call you friend." Fred crouched down in front of the pair, and glanced worriedly at his brother. Heaven help him if they'd ruined George's chance with her.
"I know you are." Edith paused, and finally met Fred's eyes. "I shouldn't have baited you. I shouldn't 've said anything about it." Her brown eyes slid to George, and tears welled in them. "But a part of me really wanted you to know." It was obvious to Fred now, that the pair felt the same about each other, and a little spark of hope bloomed.
"Come on. Let's get you back to the dorms, and tuck you into bed for the day." Fred smiled softly, as he broke the pairs stare and stood. George helped pull Edith to her feet, keeping her tucked against his chest to support her. Fred began to march ahead, ensuring the way was clear, as the pair hobbled behind him.
"Wait."
They stopped at Edith's call. Fred turned to face them, moving closer in worry.
"I want you to know. Ask me." Fred and George looked to each other with furrowed brows, before looking back at Edith, who's head hung low.
"Are you sure?" George asked as he squeezed her just a little bit tighter.
"Yes." And they knew it was the truth. Fred stepped to his brother's side, and nodded at him. George took a steadying breath, and moved his hand from Edith's elbow, to grip her own.
"Edith, what's your real name?" The twins waited in baited breath, as Edith's head rose, and she met their patient stares.
"Laurel Eleanor, Riddle."
