10: She Never Really Left (Mericcup (continuation of "All He Had Left"))
Merida watched her sobbing fiánce. The last thing she remembered was leaping in front of him for some reason, and dying. But miraculously she was alive again. Unfortunately no one was able to see her. She tried numerous times to get someone's attention but not a single person glanced her way.
He was laying on her bed, crying into a tapestry her mother had given him.
If only he could see her. If only she could tell him that she was in front of him. She begged him to look up--it was no use, as he still couldn't see her.
Merida heard soft footsteps coming their way. She turned around to see who opened the door.
In walked Jack and Elsa. Hiccup said nothing after taking a quick glance their way, then looking back down.
Jack stopped and stared in her direction. She looked behind her to see if something was there. There was nothing. Which meant only one thing..."Jack, ya can see me?" She cried happily.
He nodded his head, eyes still bulging out of their sockets. "Jack, what are you looking at?" Elsa asked, setting her hand on his shoulder.
"Uh, nothing." But the way he looked at Merida told another story. "Hiccup, come on."
"Leave me alone, Jack..." His hoarse voice warned.
Elsa sat next to him on the bed and rested her head on his shoulder. "Hiccup she always be here. You may not be able to see it--but she's always in here." Elsa pointed to his heart. "It took me a long time to get over my parents' deaths. But I can promise you that the sooner you accept what's happened, the better you will feel about it." Merida could see Elsa's attempt at comforting him only agitated him more.
Merida sobbed, "But I am here!"
Jack sadly looked her way. He nodded again with a solemn expression.
"Els, I know you're trying to make me feel better... it's not working. Thanks for trying, though." He said.
"That's because you don't want to listen." Jack said, leaning against the posts of her bed.
He stood up quickly, moving away from them. "Look, I appreciate that you're both trying to help me, but it isn't going to change anything! Everyone I've loved is dead! My dad. Astrid. Now Merida...they're all gone! So you might want to leave before you die because everyone I've ever cared about already has! And that makes you next on the list, after my mother!"
Merida wanted to scream at him and force him to come to his senses. It wasn't his fault that people around him died. That's life: people die and there's nothing he, she, or anyone else could do about it.
"Hiccup--"
"Don't you 'Hiccup' me, Elsa!" He yelled, "I just need to be alone for a while, why can't you understand that?"
"I--"
"I'll be in the forest." He slammed the door shut on his way out. Merida was going to follow him, but Jack's look told her to stay.
Jack sat on the bed next to Elsa, wrapping his arms around her. "Why don't you go talk with Rapunzel and Eugene," he suggested, "I'll be down in a minute."
Merida could tell Elsa was hesitant. She left the room anyway, after kissing Jack on the cheek. The door softly thudded shut, Jack immediately turning to her. "Merida..."
She stared at him. She didn't know what to say or what to do, how to react to the situation. Up until now she felt completely alone.
"Why is it dat only ya can see me?"
He walked closer to her, "What happened after you died, Merida? What was the first thing you saw?"
She wanted answers but decided it best she respond to his questions first. "Well..." She started to explain what she could remember to the best of her abilities. "Twas dark--at night--and I was alone in da forest. I was confused. I ramembared jumpin' in front a Hiccup, but notin' dat happened befur or after it. I looked up and saw da moon, it was so brite and comforting, noding like I had ever seen befur. It told me ta go home...fer a moment I couldn't ramembar where home was. So da moon told me ta go to da castle."
She paused, not wanting to recall the painful details that would surely bring tears to her eyes.
"Merida," Jack held her face in his hands, forcing her to look at him. "I can't help you unless you tell me everything." He said gently.
She nodded her head and stepped away from him to sit on her bed. He sat next to her as she started talking again. "I went ta da castle and as I saw more people and more of ma surroundings I ramembared ma past. I ran ta da Great Hall and saw ma parents talkin' with Hiccup."
"Okay, what then?"
She stared down at her tattered green dress. Her hands stared stroking the rough yet comforting fabric. "I tried talkin' ta dem but due didn't say anything. And dat's when I realized me mum was crying." She sobbed. "I saw Hiccup's heartbroken face...it...it hurt me so much."
Jack wrapped his arms around her. He was like the older brother she never had. On the rare occasion when she cried, it was in front of her family, Hiccup, or Jack.
"Shhh it's okay, Mer. I have a plan."
She looked up at him, "You do?"
"I do." Jack smiled and pulled her closer to him. "Don't worry, I'll help you get your prince charming back."

Merida leaned against one of her old targets with her arms crossed over her chest. "Do ya really think dis will work?"
Jack's eyes darted around the forest. "It's about a fifty-fifty chance at this point."
"Well, that's reassuring," she glared. She then noticed a tall figure walking towards them. She elbowed Jack. "Yer up."
Jack sighed in relief.
"Jack what's this all about? Why would you make me come here?" His voice nearly broke as he looked at the target where Merida stood.
"I am going to be completely honest with you." Jack started. "Merida died--"
"I know."
Jack rolled his eyes. "Hiccup, I'm not finished yet. You are going to think I'm insane. Or that I'm playing some sort of sick joke on you. But I need you to promise that you will listen to me until I'm done...then you can judge what's real for yourself."
"I don't like where this is going, but fine."
"Yes, Merida died. But who said she actually died? I became a guardian by savings sister, then drowning in a pond, right?" He nodded. "Well, I sacrificed myself for someone I loved..."
"Where are you going with this? Are you trying to day that Merida's a guardian?" He scoffed.
Merida's heart sank. He didn't believe it was even possible. Before she even knew what was happening, a loud sob escaped from her mouth.
Jack's head jerked in her direction, determination and desperation clear in is his eyes. Jack turned back to face him...and he was angry.
"Yes, damnit! And she's right there, sobbing because she thinks you'll never be able to see her again!"
"Just because it happened to you doesn't mean it happened to her!" The brunette argued.
"You're right, it doesn't! But I can see her standing right there!"
He sighed hopelessly, "Jack, if she really is there, what do I do?"
"Believe."
Merida's sobs dulled as she looked up from her hands. He was staring at her, his mouth hung open and his eyes were practically bursting out of his head.
"Jaaaack!" Jack whispered, attempting to imitate a woman's voice. He coughed, "i think Elsa's calling for me..."
As he flew away, Hiccup walked closer to her. Tears still streamed down her cheeks. When Hiccup was close enough, he wiped one away with his thumb.
His arms wrapped tightly around her waist as he kissed her. This kiss was somehow different than all the others. It was more desperate and passionate by far. She loved it. She loved him.
He slowly pulled away, resting his forehead against hers
"Please don't ever do that to me again," He begged.
"I wouldn't dream a it."

What started of extremely sad, ended on a very happy note. I hope you liked this one! It's one of my favorites because I feel like I deepened the characters a lot. Comment below for what you want me to write next (captinswan, cindai, eugunzel, everlark, fourtris, hiccelsa, jarida, jelsa, kristanna, merricup, thress, wolflet, wincin... You can tell me others and I will do them if I know who they are). I have an OUAT, Wolflet, Jarida, Lunar Chronicles, Mericcup, Wincin, Hiccelsa, and Eugunzel in that order coming up next. I can't promise quick updates on this book since I have other stories to write too.
