Horse Wingman {Sawyer x Darcy}
Note: Sawyer and Darcy are two characters my friend in real life and I made up.
Sawyer's POV
"She was drawn to the..." My brother's voice faded away as he told me a story he'd heard from the neighboring ranch. About Darcy... I stopped listening as she entered my mind. I may have had a secret crush on her for a while. My brother didn't know that, at least I didn't think so. Darcy had hair the colour of autumn leaves and eyes the colour of the darkish green bandana I wore around my neck. I appeared to have misplaced said bandana. I'd made the bandana so I could remember her eyes. "Sawyer, are you even listening?" I jumped and nodded rapidly.
"Y-yes!" I answered. I heard a nicker behind me. I sent the chestnut a glare. She snorted in reply.
"Really?" My brother asked, a quizzical look on his face. He had basically raised me. I'm not saying my parents didn't, but he had, so he would know if I was distracted.
"Okay so I was distracted, let's just continue," I answered. My brother's expression changed to a sickening smirk. I realized my eyes had just travelled over to the neighboring ranch. My brother would've been smart enough to figure out why. The why? Darcy lived on that ranch. We'd even met up here at my ranch to go horse riding together. I would be on the chestnut and she would be on her Shetland, Obsidian.
"No. You're too busy drooling over Darcy," my brother teased causing me to blush. He was laughing slightly.
"WHat?" My voice cracked. "W-what gives you t-that idea?" I stammered, looking away and clearly denying it though I knew that the attempt was futile. I heard the chestnut whinny and I wanted to slap her.
"Silly human, you do realize he already knows right?" She whispered. I could understand horses for some inexplicable reason. I merely sent her a glare.
"I saw it," my brother explained. "And I've seen it. I been there." I visibly cringed at the last sentence. "And also, you know that bandana you're always wearing around your neck that matches her eye colour? I may have torn it."
"Don't tell me, she got to it."
"Yep."
"I told you not to leave it on her fence!" My brother turned away and huffed.
"I can fix it!" He mumbled.
"Here," he mumbled giving me the bandana which I promptly brought up to my chest and held it there letting out a deep sigh. My brother laughed. "Oh my God, you're helpless." Sticking my tongue out at him, I left. I saw a fairly large black blob.
"Do I look okay?" I quickly asked the chestnut. She flicked her tail.
"Bucking hell," she whispered. "Sawyer you're fine," she said. "Darcy usually sees you in stuff like this." I sent her a glare. She snorted.
"Hey guys!" I whipped around. There, on the tiny pitch black pony was the girl of my dreams. Darcy. I felt myself start to blush when I realized I was staring. I heard the chestnut whinny in exasperation.
"Hey, Darce!" I said trying to keep my cool. For once, I wished I had mind-reading rather than understanding-horse-language. She giggled. Was it nervous? Was it not? Why did the world go pink there for a second? I shook my head. "What brings you here today?"
"What's with the formality, Saws?" She dismounted and started to walk over before stopping and looking at me. "Um..."
"I don't know why I'm being so formal! I'm usually not li- Darce? Earth to Darce?" She shook herself, turning slightly red.
"O-oh! Sorry, I got lost in my thoughts." I smiled at her, trying the disappointing truth I knew. That although I was pining for her, there was no way she was crushing on me too.
"These bucking two, I can't," I heard the chestnut moan. "Why can't they see it?" I'm sure Obsidian replied to that but I didn't hear it. Darcy giggled again. Her loose ponytail bopped up and down with her shoulders. This time it sounded more nervous.
I felt myself being pushed forward.
Wait, was Darcy moving closer too?
My pulse began to race. What was the chestnut doing?! She'd left her paddock?! How?! Mmphf!
Darcy and I collided.
Our lips brushed past each other as we fell to the ground but didn't press together. I hit the ground hard on my back and Darcy fell on top of me. Our heads were a few centimeters apart. Blushing profusely, Darcy quickly sat up. My face wasn't much better, also an intense red.
"U-uh, u-um," Darcy stammered, moving away from being on top of me and sitting beside me.
"I-it's fine! It was an a-accident!" Caused by one of the worst equines on the planet.
"Now would be the perfect time to tell her how you feel."
"No. It's awkward right now."
"Um... I-I gotta go! S-so sorry Sawyer!" Darcy said hopping on Obsidian and racing away before I could even speak. Ripping my bandana off in anger I stormed away from the chestnut.
"Here you go." My brother said handing me the re-sewn bandana for the second time that week. I took it. "Now don't rip it off in disgust, kay?" I didn't answer. "Sawyer, you're going have to tell her now..."
"I know."
I walked out into the field and walked to the well to get more water for the animals. "Sawyer?" I turned around.
Darcy was standing off to the side.
Whatever she was going to say didn't come out when she saw my bandana. "I-I see you got your bandana back..." I saw my chance. I took a breath.
"Yeah, I did, wanna know why?"
"Why?" A light wind started blowing and it blew Darcy's bangs in her face.
"I couldn't bear to part with your eyes for long.." I saw Darcy's face go slightly pink.
"R-really? I-I don't know what to say..."
"Say... Nothing... just let me look at you. Beautiful. Just indescribable. Your soft face, your smile, soft and real." I paused at her. Darcy was smiling, and her face was red. "And I... uh... well... now I'm speechless..." Darcy looked at the ground.
"Sawyer... Sawyer I..." She leaned forward.
Closing her eyes, she brought her lips to mine.
