CHAPTER TWENTY THREE
"There's a storm inside my head and it's killing all the flowers."
Rebekah rocked with Hope and Allison in a rocking chair at their new home while she tells them at story about their lives. She tells the story in voiceover as the scene cuts through various flashbacks to the previous season, including Klaus standing on the balcony overlooking the French Quarter, Francesca and her brothers attacking the vampires, Genevieve making the moonlight rings, Klaus being weakened by the rings drawing on his strength, and Malia mourning Hope and Allison's death" at the memorial for the fallen in the Battle of New Orleans.
"Once upon a time, there was a majestic king, who lived with his noble brother in a kingdom where music and art were celebrated. The king did not foresee having children, but he lived in an enchanted land where all things were possible. In time, he was blessed with two beautiful baby daughter's, for whom he wished only peace." Allison and Hope coos at Rebekah. "Still, the king had demons who pursued him. There was a ruthless beast who wanted to take the kingdom for her own. Armed with a pack of untamed creatures, she drove the other magical creatures from the land. And, there was a wicked sorceress with enchanted stones that weakened the king every full moon. Seeing the shadow his enemies cast upon his home, the king was driven to send his beloved princess away, convincing all who remained that she was forever lost.
Elijah locked the gates to the compound so they are no longer open to the public.
"The king, in his sorrow, turned away from the world. The castle closed its doors, and the kingdom fell. Some say that the only light that shines in the castle illuminates the shadow of the once majestic king in the room meant for his children. But, as the ruthless beasts took rule over the fallen king's realm, little did they know that he and his brother would not rest until their enemies were vanquished. For, they believed that one day, they would heal their kingdom and bring their precious princesses home, so that they might live happily ever after."
Klaus stood at the window of Hope and Allison's nursery, looking down on the street, as Elijah approached him from behind and placed a comforting hand on his shoulder.
Elsewhere, Rebekah laid the girls in their crib, setting Klaus' carved wooden knight next to them before turning out the lights and leaving them to sleep.
I roamed around the former werewolf encampments in my coyote form for a while until I finally shifted back into human form. I pulled my clothes off of the clothes line and quickly redressed before walking toward Dwayne's old shack.
As I was walking, I found a burnt and melted baby doll, and the sight of it made me cry. It reminded me of my adoptive sisters doll and the way I don't have my babies in my arms. I picked it up and held it to my chest, tears falling down my cheeks.
Davina is at the record shop to pick up some records from the shop owner, Joe. Behind her, a young man browsed through the crates of records.
Joe handed Davina a record. "Here you go, Davina. Now, sometime you're gonna have to give me the low-down on why you're so hooked on ancient Icelandic folk music!"
Davina laughed. "It's for someone else."
"I sure hope so!" Davina turned to leave and ran into the young guy as he headed out the door. He stopped and smiled at her before leaving, and Davina awkwardly smiled back at him. Before she can leave, Oliver entered the shop.
Oliver smiled. "Hey there, cutie."
Davina who was unimpressed replied. "Don't call me that."
"So, I heard that you ditched your coven." He picked up a record and examined it. "That's too bad. That other Harvest girl, Cassie? She has been super helpful to all us wolves."
"She's making you moonlight rings, Oliver. I wouldn't call that helpful, I'd call that an alliance."
"Well, you can call it whatever you want. As long as we don't have to turn on the full moon anymore, it works for me." He leaned in closer and whispered, "Look, I'd take off if I were you. Things are about to get a little ugly in here." He then raised voice and shouted to the rest of the store patrons. "Hey y'all, store's closed. Get out, now!"
Joe is confused. "Hey, what are you doing?"
"It's Joe Dalton, right?" Joe nodded. "You see, I've been studying up on this store. It's been a staple of the Quarter for ninety years... it was run by you, your daddy, and then his daddy before him?"
Joe grew tense. "That's right."
"Yeah, you see, the thing is, Joe, there just ain't many photos of anyone in your family..." he pulled out an old black and white photo of a young man. "–but you." Davina realized he's a vampire, just as Joe realized he's been outed.
"Oliver, no." Joe vamp-sped towards the door, but he's blocked in by two more werewolves, all with moonlight rings.
"Stop! Stop it! Stop it!" The werewolves wrestled with Joe and extended their fangs to bite him, when Davina hit them all with a mystical migraine, leaving Joe unhurt. They all fall to their knees before Joe can be bitten. "Joe, get out of here!" Joe fled. Oliver winced and glares at Davina, still on his knees on the floor.
I walked into my room to find Hayley asleep on my bed. I sighed and crawled in beside her and she immediately brought me into her as I silently cried.
"I want the Guerrera's dead," I mumbled into her chest. My heart was aching from how much I have been crying lately.
"I know, Mal, I do too," She whispered, a frown on her face.
Mikael is pacing around the church's attic, listening to the Icelandic folk music Davina got for him, when he suddenly heard a noise and threw the indestructible white oak stake towards the door, where it embedded itself in the wall. Davina stood in the doorway and rolled her eyes.
Davina sighed. "I don't know why you keep showing off. You know you can't hurt me."
"Oh, but the desire I have to do so." Davina held her wrist in front of his face so he can feed on her. "I am Mikael, the vampire who hunts vampires. Your young -thing blood does little to sustain me."
"Feed," She demanded. Mikael's eye veins involuntarily pop out, and he reluctantly bit down on her wrist and fed. Davina who grew annoyed said, "Stop." Mikael pulled away, clearly annoyed, and wiped the blood from his mouth with his hands. He spotted the bracelet around Davina's wrist and touched it.
"Oh, I wish I could rip this from you, break that which binds me to you, and complete the task for which you resurrected me - kill the bastard who calls himself my son."
"You can't take off the bracelet, and you can't kill Klaus. Not until I figure out how to save my friends from dying, too." Davina kneeled next to a large trunk on the floor and opened it before pulling out Esther's grimoire. "I've studied their mother's spellbook for weeks. I'm getting close. Once I unlink my friends from Klaus' sire line, I will unleash you to be the monster that you are so eager to be."
Mikael smirked. "Music to my ears, my little witch."
Klaus has returned to the compound to discuss their plan with Elijah. "We have the Guerreras where we want them. We have them waiting, we have them worried, and now, we know they're an army with no defenses against an Original."
"We don't know that for certain," Elijah told his brother, shaking his head.
"I'm willing to gamble."
"It's too risky! The stake didn't just disappear, someone has it."
Klaus shrugged. "One enemy at a time! In the end, we'll slay them all." He sat down at the table, just as he felt one of the moonlight rings being activated to keep the wearer from turning, weakening him. "Tonight, we just have to plant the right seeds, and for that, we need help."
Joe returned to his record store, only to find that Oliver and a group of werewolves with moonlight rings are waiting for him.
Oliver chuckled. "You know, I am starting to think that you have a death wish."
"Look, I just want to get my stuff and get out of town."
Oliver crossed his arms over his chest. "And why would we let you do that?"
Joe smirked. "Cause I've got information that could be very useful to Francesca Guerrera."
Oliver's smile fell, and he looked interested.
We sat around and continued to plan out attack against the Guerreras.
"We're taking the twelve original rings," Elijah started. "Now, four of them sit on the hands of the Guerrera brothers. One on Oliver, one on Francesca, three with the home security detail, and the rest scattered amongst her lackeys. Now, each ring is distinguishable by its setting - gauche, like those that wear them," He explained.
At the Guerrera mansion, Joe has been brought to see Francesca by the werewolves, where he is giving them the information he claimed to have. Her fellow moonlight-ring-wearing werewolves and Cassie/Esther are there as well.
"Klaus thinks you have the white oak stake."
"But, we don't!"
Cassie/Esther decided it was time to speak up. "That doesn't matter, because if they think you have it, it means they don't know where it is."
"Do a spell. Find it. Now."
Meanwhile, Klaus, Hayley, Elijah and I continue to scheme.
"If they believe they can get their hands on the stake, they will come for me when I am weak. Each ring you retrieve will strengthen me, but I will still be at a disadvantage."
I frowned at Klaus's words because I don't like seeing him hurt.
"Ergo, any hope of our success depends entirely upon our working together." Elijah looked to me. "The two of you have to get over Hope and Allison being gone." I looked over at Klaus, who sighed and stood up, looking at me.
"This is our fight. Are you ready for battle, Malia?" Klaus asked, looking me in the eyes.
I stood up and faced him, a determined look on my face. "Just promise me that Francesca doesn't come out of this alive."
He smiled weakly at me. "Her head will be delivered to you on a silver platter, little red."
Elijah went to leave. "I'll deal with the last piece of the puzzle."
The two Guerrera werewolf lackeys who followed Cami earlier have arrived at her home, where they're trashing her furniture to scare her into giving them information.
"It's not enough I can't even go on a walk? And now you have to do this?" Cami yelled in fury.
"You know how to stop this." One of the men picked up a lamp and smashed it on the floor.
"Where's the stake?"
"Fine. Whatever." She picked up a pad of paper and scribbled an address on it. "Why do I care? This is not even my fight." She handed it to lackey number 1. "There. That's where you'll find what you want. Now, all you need is my uncle's key."
"And where is that?"
Cami rolled her eyes in annoyance and grabbed a key hanging on a key hook. "Hiding in plain sight, genius." She handed him the key before opening her door and showing the two men out.
When they leave, she leaned against the door and sighed. Outside the nearby window, Elijah is seen standing guard to ensure Cami wasn't hurt in the confrontation. She nodded at him, and he left.
Klaus kneeled on the floor of his art room, weakened, surrounded by canvases while he waited for the plan to begin.
Francesca is outlining her own plan to her pack and Cassie/Esther. "Klaus will be at his weakest for the next few hours. Once you retrieve the white oak stake, be ready to use it." She turned to Oliver. "You take a group to the compound and subdue him while he's still weak."
"What about Elijah, Hayley and Malia? There's no way they'll leave his side tonight, especially Malia."
Francesca paced. "Elijah can be weakened by our bites. As for Hayley and Malia... whoever rips out their hearts gets a bonus!" The pack members start to leave to fulfill their duties, but Oliver hung back.
"And where will you be?"
"Here, where it's safe. They're vampires! They can't get into the house without an invitation."
"So, we risk our lives while you hide?"
"I'm the top dog! Your job is to ensure that the battle doesn't come to me!"
The two werewolves from Cami's apartment, along with several others, have arrived at the foundry, where Cami sent them to look for the white oak stake.
"Start from the corners. Work the room from the outside in." As the men looked around, they noticed a dark figure vamp -speeding past them.
They hear the noise and turn to find Marcel standing above them on a platform near the ceiling. "Huh, look what we have here." Marcel raised his hands in a non -threatening pose, distracting them while Josh quickly exited the building and locked the doors, trapping them inside.
"I know your boss wanted to buy this place, but... I've been stockpiling wolfsbane for months, and I just really needed a place to store it!" Marcel pulled a lighter from his pocket and lit it before holding it near one of the overhead sprinkler system, causing it to spray wolfsbane -infused water down on the werewolves.
Their skin burned from the exposure to wolfsbane, causing them to scream in pain. They desperately try to break through the doors to escape, but they can't. Marcel pushed Lackey number one against the door and sliced his fingers off, including the one with the moonlight ring. "I'm gonna need that."
At the compound, Klaus is still kneeling on the floor, gasped in relief as he began to gain some of his strength back from the lackey losing his ring. He smiled and rolled his neck.
Meanwhile, many of the Guerrera werewolves, including Oliver, invade the compound and quickly split up. Two of the werewolves head for one of the staircases, where Hayley and I vamp -sped towards them and snapped both of their necks instantly. We slipped each of their rings off of their fingers, and Klaus, having regained more strength, smirked and grabbed his palette off of the nearby easel.
At the mansion, Francesca is sitting at her desk, filling out paperwork, while two of her brothers sit across from her, watching her boredly. She looked up at them and rolled her eyes before returning to her work.
Suddenly, one of the werewolves is thrown past the window behind her, and the three stand up to see what is happening.
Just then, a large amount of blood splattered against the window, indicating that someone has begun taking out her security detail. Outside the house, Elijah is sitting on the side of a fountain while he broke off the moonlight ring finger of the man's hand and placed it in his pocket square.
At the compound, Klaus, growing ever stronger, smiled widely as he grabbed a handful of paintbrushes off of an end table.
At the foundry, Marcel is still fighting with the Guerrera werewolves, who are still severely burned from the wolfsbane water that is raining down on them. He saw the ring on the second lackey's hand and ripped his entire arm off of his body.
At the compound, Klaus gasped in relief as he got even stronger from the loss of the most recent ring, and smiled. He set down a canvas as he prepared to paint, and took a paintbrush in each hand, holding them in a defensive manner.
At the Guerrera mansion, Francesca's security detail rushed outside of the house, where they find a cheerful Elijah waiting for them. Elijah smiled. "Good evening!"
Hayley and I have just finished removing the other ring from the werewolf I killed when many more Guerrera wolves found us and crowded around us. We tensed as we took in the threat, noticing a moonlight ring on the finger of one of the female security guards.
"Have I mentioned that I've had a rotten couple of months?" I rhetorically asked before my hybrid face came out, and I lunged for the crowd.
Upstairs, two Guerrera wolves have made their way to Klaus' study, where they see him kneeling weakly on the floor. Sensing that they're approaching, Klaus flipped the paintbrushes in his hands and waited until they get closer.
Downstairs, I have removed the ring from the female security guard's hand, returning more strength to Klaus.
Once they're close, Klaus smiled and quickly turned to forcefully throw the paintbrushes towards them, impaling the wolves in their throats, killing them.
Oliver slowly walked around the downstairs of the compound, but is quickly found by me. I punched him, elbowed him, then kicked him in the knees before slamming him against the wall.
"You think you're strong because of that ring you wear?" I questioned, my eyes shining a bright blue with gold specks in them. "You're nothing!" I yelled. "We were strong, we were part of a pack, and you ruined it." I pulled the ring off his finger.
Upstairs, Klaus drug the bodies of the two werewolves he killed toward the canvas he laid on the floor, smiling as he does so.
Downstairs, I held Oliver's ring in front of his face. "If I see you with one of these again, I will kill you myself," I threatened, showing my canines.
Upstairs, Klaus happily dipped his paintbrush into the wounds of the corpse's neck and used their blood as paint while he worked on his newest painting.
Francesca and her brothers walked towards the front door just as another large splatter of blood landed on the frosted glass windows. They look alarmed as the door opened by itself, just before a severed head is thrown through the doorway, where it rolled into the foyer and lands at Francesca's feet.
Alarmed, Francesca and her brothers slowly approach the door, where Elijah is waiting for them on their front porch. He wiped his bloody hands on a pocket square, and Francesca tried to play it cool.
Francesca fake smiled. "Hmm." She turned to her brothers. "It's fine! He can't come in."
Elijah looked amused. "Can't I?"
Francesca laughed. "Don't bluff me! You can't win."
Elijah smiled. "You mobsters all suffer from such hubris." Francesca raised her eyebrows at him. "Did you know Al Capone thought himself invincible back in his day? And, in the end, he was sentenced to the wretched filth of Alcatraz, for which of his atrocities? Anyone?" He questioned, looking at them. "A failure to pay his taxes! I suppose the devil's in the details, isn't it?" He looked around the inside of her mansion from where he stood by the door. "My, my, you have a beautiful home, here."
Francesca looked at her brother nervously. "I was so pleased when the city took my suggestion to protect its heritage status and invoke imminent domain," Elijah continued. Francesca's smirk faded in horror. "I suppose that means this house now belongs to the public. And, as such, anyone can enter without invitation."
Francesca watches in fear as Elijah took a dramatic step forwards, over the threshold. He smirked as Francesca and her brothers stood defensively and prepared to fight.
Klaus is continuing to paint with the blood of the werewolves he killed, as Elijah returned to the compound and joined him.
"I'm still not at full strength. Which of the rings are unaccounted for?"
"Only one. I must say, the brothers fought valiantly before Ms. Guerrera escaped."
Klaus turned to look at Elijah, shocked. "You let her get away?"
"Not exactly."
Francesca is desperately speeding down the road in her attempt to flee town before the Mikaelsons can kill her. She anxiously turned around to see if anyone is following her, but when she turned back, she saw someone standing in the middle of the road and slammed on her brakes.
When Francesca finally stopped, she looked up again, but Malia is gone. Suddenly, her car door is pulled open, and Malia ripped her out from inside the vehicle.
I walked into Klaus's painting room to see him painting with the blood of the two dead wolves that laid beside him. I smirked and walked forward.
"I assume that you were the one to kill Francesca?" He questioned, not turning around but I could hear the smirk in his voice.
"Oh, I so did and it felt so amazing. I sucked her blood until she was barely breathing and then I ripped her limp from limp. Now, there's nothing left of Francesca." I sighed happily and smiled brightly.
Klaus stood up and faced me. "I'm really happy that you finally got revenge." He put his hand on my cheek and I instinctively leaned into, a sigh leaving my lips.
"Klaus." I looked up at him with tears in my eyes. "I miss our babies."
"I do too, little red, I do too." He pulled me into his arms, as if he was protecting me from this cruel cruel world. "I miss them too."
