CHAPTER TWENTY ONE
"I can't tell you what it really is
I can only tell you what it feels like
And right now there's a steel knife, in my windpipe
I can't breathe, but I still fight, while I can fight."
Marcel and Diego have brought Jackson and Oliver to Thierry's old warehouse at the docks. Jackson and Oliver are each bound to a chair, and both are bruised and bloody from being beaten. Diego is violently punching Oliver in the face.
"Leave him alone!" Jackson yelled at Marcel, worried for his friend.
"We'll leave your boy alone when you tell us what Klaus is up to," Marcel told him, getting straight to the point.
"How the hell should I know what he's up to?"
"See, I know you've been meeting him. The stones in your duffel bag?" Marcel kneeled down in front of Jackson to look him in the eye. "That's black hyanite. It's pretty rare. I also know enough about witchcraft to recognize the ingredients of a spell." Jackson glared at Marcel angrily. "So, you'll make me ask again?" Jackson sneered at him. "Okay." Marcel backed away from them and looked at Diego, who grabbed a blowtorch and walked over to them.
"You wanna know the problem with having two werewolf hostages? You really only need one." Diego lit the blowtorch, and Oliver and Jackson's eyes widen in alarm.
"You Crescent boys, you think you're a bunch of badasses, but back in '25, I wiped out a whole bloodline of Guerrera werewolves. They were a lot tougher than you," Marcel spoke as Diego grabbed Oliver by the hair and goes to aim the lit blowtorch at his face when Jackson finally stopped him.
"Wait!"
Diego looked over at Marcel, who gestured at him to hold off. Diego then let go of Oliver.
"You let him go, I'll tell you about the stones, about Klaus, whatever," Jackson told Marcel, looking over at Oliver in concern.
"Alright! Alright. A deal's a deal. But, since Nirvana here–" He gestured to Oliver. "–is gonna turn into a wolf in about eight hours, D, drop his ass off way out into the bayou."
"Do I at least get to kill this fool?" gestures towards Jackson.
Marcel looked at Jackson, who sneered at him. "Nah, I got a better idea."
Klaus is scaling the rooftops of various buildings in the French Quarter when Elijah called him from the Abbatoir, with Hayley and I.
"Yes, brother, what is it?" I heard the voice of Klaus ask.
"It appears our wolves have gone astray, brother."
"They should have been back hours ago," Hayley spoke which made Elijah turn around and hold his index finger up.
"We need to find them."
"Well, that might be a bit tricky. You see, we've located their car on a back road in the middle of nowhere. I suspect they've been shanghai'd." Klaus walked long the edge of the roof, smiling fakely.
"And you didn't feel the need to share this information?" I asked in irritation.
"It was my intention to present you with a problem only after I had found an appropriate solution," Klaus simply told me which made me roll my brown eyes.
"Do enlighten us," Elijah spoke, giving me a look which made me shrug.
"I'm closing in on it as we speak. The only person who would be bold enough to snatch my wolf allies is the one who has the most to lose," Klaus explained and I growled in realization.
Oh, how I hate that good for nothing blood sucking serpent. "Marcel."
"No, he'll kill them!" Hayley exclaimed in fright.
"Genevieve assures me that Marcel has procured a cloaking spell. The only witch who will aid Marcel is Davina. I just need to get one last bit of leverage before I pay her a visit." From the rooftop, Klaus looked down below and watched as Josh carried a duffel bag to his car that is parked on the street. Josh popped the trunk to his car to put away his stuff. "And there it is." Klaus hung up and jumped down behind Josh, which startled him. "Hello, Joshua." Klaus grabbed Josh and bite him on the neck before Josh could react.
Hayley was pacing around the compound, worrying about thei current problems. I stood against the wall, watching as she paced back and forth. Genevieve has stayed behind to look after us which annoyed the crap out of me.
"Elijah should have called by now."
"Oh, my god. Stop worrying Hayley," I told her, my eyebrows furrowed.
"You should sit down, try to keep calm," Genevieve spoke as she walked into the room.
Hayley frowned. "What are you, now, magician slash zen-life-coach?"
"The treatment of pregnant women has advanced remarkably since I was a nurse, but even I know high blood pressure is bad for your friend, and her baby," Genevieve told her, gesturing to me. Hayley sighed and sat down. "Especially now, since she's so close to term."
"I hate this. I feel completely useless," Hayley spoke, her hand going to her hair.
"Don't you get it? You both are the point of all this. Klaus and Elijah running all over town?" Genevieve sighed. "It's all for you." She looked at me with jealous eyes. "Especially you. I'm a bit envious." I smirked at her.
"Great. Lucky us," Hayley spoke sarcastically.
"Is there anything I can get you?" She asked me.
"How about a moonlight ring?" I asked the witch.
She chuckled. "The spell can't be performed until the full moon reaches its apex. And, of course, I need the stones, which will be here soon enough. Have a little faith!"
Hayley got up from the couch, grabbed my hand and drug me out of the room.
Hayley was pacing in front of me as the door opened and in came Elijah, Klaus, and Jackson, all looking very disheveled and covered in ash.
Hayley and I ran towards them with wide eyes. "Thank god you're alive!" Hayley gave Jackson a hug as I ran into Klaus' arms.
"I'm glad you're alive," I whispered and then looked up at him to find him looking down at me fondly.
I turned my head to find Hayley sitting down Jackson to look at his wounds. I pulled my arms from Klaus and stood by his side.
"What about the stones?" I questioned, looking up at Klaus but he wasn't the one who answered.
Elijah sighed. "Scattered across the bed of the Mississippi, I'd imagine."
Klaus poured himself a drink and sent me a look. "Marcel's not a fool. He knows an empowered werewolf army would mean the end of vampires in New Orleans. The explosion is his way of saying he means to prevent that. For all the good it'll do him." He smirked and took a drink.
"Well, it did him pretty damn well, didn't it." Hayley looked at Elijah.
"This is my fault. I'll find a way to fix it."
Hayley rubbed his shoulder affectionately. "No, Jack, you're hurt. No one's blaming you."
"I'm blaming you!" I exclaimed, looking at Jackson. "Those stones will be hard to replace."
"Fortunately, I always have a backup plan," Klaus told us and smiled evilly.
As we walked downstairs, we saw Francesca and four men approaching with a briefcase.
"You can't seriously mean her! She's a gangster!" Hayley exclaimed.
"I see her more as a means of procuring rare items at short notice." Klaus then turned to Francesca and her entourage. "Greetings, Ms. Correa! I see you've brought company."
"These are my brothers. I always include them in delicate business matters." She turned to her brothers. "Fellas, meet Mr. Mikaelson."
Klaus smiled and raised his hand. "Please, call me Klaus. All my friends do."
"I don't know if I'd call us friends." She reached into the briefcase her brother is holding, and pulled out a small black drawstring bag. "But, if you and Marcel are planning on having a little throwdown, I'd prefer my family to be on the same side as the inevitable victor." I smirked and crossed my arms.
"Then, you have what I asked for?"
Francesca held out the bag. "Not enough for an army, at such short notice, but it's a start."
"Strange." Elijah stepped forward. "I wasn't aware that she was familiar with our plan."
"My price for doing business is full disclosure. Your brother complied."
"And what does the Human Faction stand to benefit from all of this?" I questioned, eyes narrowed.
"I only want us to solidify our allegiance to the ruling class. It's good for business," She simply told me.
Klaus, examining the stones, spoke up, "If only everyone shared your capacity for reason."
"Sadly, they don't. Marcel is being especially vindictive. I'm worried he might come after me, or my family, just for meeting with you." She took a deep breath. "It might be in our best interests if we combine our efforts."
"So be it! The more bodies we have to defend the compound, the better." Klaus smirked. "Let's get started, shall we?"
I looked down at my phone which was ringing and I sighed, answering the phone and pressed it to my ear. "What do you want?" I asked as nicely as I could but you could tell that I was being fake.
"Oh, wow, okay. Down doggy. Or coyote. Whatever the hell you are. Why are you mad at me? Is it about the whole "I love Lydia more thing"? Oh, never mind, forget I said that. That was rude and unforgivable of me. I'm–"
"Shut up Stiles!" I said harshly, tears coming to my eyes as I remembered him cheating on me with Lydia. I cleared my throat and closed my eyes for a second to try and contain myself. "I was fine until you mentioned it. You hurt me. You broke me more than I was already broken. I lo–loved you but you didn't love me back. You–you could have just told me the truth in the beginning but you–" I sighed, wiping away stray tears. "–you didn't. You told me you loved me when you didn't." A sob escaped me even though I didn't want it to. "Goodbye." I hung up and threw my phone against the wall with a scream.
Genevieve continued to cast the moonlight ring spell in the Mikaelson compound, while Klaus, Hayley, Elijah and I watched carefully.
Genevieve held her hands out and chanted. "Tua virtuse. Materi lunare tua virtuse. Materi lunare tua virtuse." Francesca then rushed in.
"My people say Marcel is on the move, and he's bringing friends."
Klaus turned to Elijah. Get Malia to safety." Ge then rushed away.
Elijah walked over to us and grabbed our arms. "Come with me."
"No. Some needs to watch her." I growled and gestured to Genevieve.
"You should help Klaus. My brothers and their security detail won't be much against a vampire army. I'll stay with Hayley and Malia," Francesca told Elijah, glancing at us.
"Go, Elijah," I told him. "And don't hold back." Elijah reluctantly left to help Klaus.
Downstairs, Elijah strolled into the courtyard, where Francesca's brothers and their security guards are aiming guns at the vampires who are flooding in from every direction. He joined Klaus in the center of the room as the vampires surround them on all sides.
Klaus smirked. "I thought this lot had learnt their lesson!"
"Well, they're not exactly reknowned for their genius," Elijah remarked.
"So, where's the ringleader of this circus?" Klaus turns to face the other side of the room. "Too afraid to show his face?"
Marcel appeared on the balcony. "I'm here!" He shouted. "And I'm gonna offer you one last chance to pack your stuff and get the hell out of my town."
"You'll allow your men to rush to their deaths?" Klaus paused. "Again?"
"Look around." Marcel threw his arms out and gestured to all of the vampires. "Every vampire in the Quarter is coming out! They want their city back. No surrender this time. You're gonna have to kill us all."
Klaus, who was unfazed, spoke. "Okay! I think I'll start with you."
"Fine. Then, come get me." Marcel vamp-sped away.
Elijah turned to Klaus. "If you don't kill him, I will."
"He's mine. This won't take long." Klaus vamp-sped away, leaving Elijah with the rest of the vampires.
Elijah confidently unbuttoned his jacket. He then smiled at them. "Gentleman." He held out his arms wide. "Shall we?" Vampires start jumping down from the balconies and lunge for him.
Klaus is angrily skulking down the street to find Marcel. After walking for a moment, he turned just in time to see Marcel jump down behind him. The two begin to fight. At first, Marcel is on top, and beat Klaus up pretty badly.
"Not bad. But, not nearly good enough." They resume the fight. Klaus quickly gained the upper hand, and threw Marcel across the street, where he hit a parked car. "How pathetic you've become." Klaus approached him. "Explosives, Marcellus? Really? I should have known it was you who detonated those bombs in the bayou."
"The docks! That was me. I got the detonators from Francesca. Why don't you ask her about the bayou bombing?" Marcel grunted and stood up, facing Klaus.
"Lies! And distractions!"
"I never went after Malia or Hayley!" Marcel yelled. "I'm not a monster, Klaus! I'm not you!" Klaus glared furiously at Marcel.
In the courtyard, Elijah is fiercely fighting against all of the vampires, and despite being severely outnumbered, he's still winning the fight. Many of the vampires try to stake him with regular wooden stakes, but he simply stole them and used the stakes on them.
One of the security guards made his way into the room where Genevieve is casting the spell, in order to get Francesca out of there.
Francesca held up a hand. "Not yet."
"Ms. Correa, we need to go. Your brothers are already headed out the back."
"Materi lunare tua virtuse. Materi lunare tua virtuse."
I ignored my phone which was buzzing and kept watching Genevieve.
"Materi lunare tua virtuse. Materi lunare tua virtuse." She stopped chanting and picked up a stone to examine it. "The stones are finished. I've done my part. Now, it's up to you."
I went to grab the stones. "I'll get them to the bayou."
Francesca rushed over to Genevieve and held out her hand. "Actually, she was talking to me."
"What the hell is this?" Hayley asked angrily, grabbing my hand. Genevieve then placed the stone in Francesca's hand.
"Call it a side deal. The point is, I'm taking the stones." Francesca then walked away.
"Are you out of your mind?" I asked angrily, going after her with Hayley hot on my trail. "You think the humans can go up against Klaus?"
"No, I don't. But, I'm not human." She pulled out a knife, and used it to slit the throat of her bodyguard. When the bodyguard died, she doubled over in pain. She looked back up at Hayley and I with gold eyes and fangs. "I'm like you both. And now, I'm gonna take back my town!"
Hayley went to lunge for Francesca. "Like hell you are!" Before she can do anything, Genevieve used a spell to knock Hayley out, and she fell on the floor. I growled, brought out my claws and was about to attack went Genevieve used a spell and threw me against the wall, my head hitting it first and everything went black.
Klaus wandered into the restaurant and stumbled into a custodian mopping the floor.
"I'm sorry, mate, but I'm a bit famished." Klaus bit into his neck and fed on the man. He held out his hand, which is still bleeding. Genevieve came in and laughed.
"You look awful."
"Why aren't I healing? What have you done to me?"
She approached him. "Well, you're the one who wanted me to cast the spell. So, I made your stones...by linking their power to your blood. And now, each full moon, whenever a werewolf uses their power to keep from turning, they'll be drawing from your strength! And, causing you pain."
Klaus groaned in pain. "After all I offered you, you will betray me?"
Genevieve kneeled in front of him and grabbed his face. "Look me in the eyes, Nik. Were you ever planning to give me your mother's grimoire? Did you care about me, even for a moment?"
Klaus glared at her. "No," He simply answered, thinking of Malia.
She stood up to leave. "Francesca kept her end of the deal. There is, after all, honor among thieves, even if they are werewolves. And as for you? The great irony is, in wanting to take the city, you lost everything." Klaus pulled himself to his feet. "Your sister Rebekah, your adopted son Marcel, and now, even your child and her mother will suffer, all because of your greed." Klaus lunged at her, but collapsed at her feet.
"I will kill you," He threatened.
"As weak as you are? Doubtful." She threw out a hand and used a pain infliction spell on him until he passed out.
A group of witches, accompanied by Genevieve, dragged me by my arms into the church, toward the sacristy. Monique and another witch waited for us in the pews.
I screamed in fright in hopes that someone will hear me. For Klaus to hear me.
"Get her down on the floor!" Genevieve ordered the witches that held me.
"We should take her to the City of the Dead."
"We won't make it, the baby is coming now." When I heard those words, I started panicking.
"No! It's too soon!" I screamed and then I felt a huge amount of pain in my stomach so I screamed.
"Apparently not."
Monique grabbed Genevieve by the arm. "The plan was to induce her when the sacrifice was ready!"
"I had to subdue her, and the trauma caused a placental abruption. So, the baby is coming, and we'll just have to adapt."
I growled and struggled to get free. "Let me go!"
"You need to be calm, Malia."
I growled and snapped my teeth at the witches. "Why are you doing this to me!?"
"To be reborn, you must sacrifice."
Tears fell down my eyes as I pushed Monique's hand away. "What does that mean, you psychotic little bitch!?" My eyes flashed blue.
"The ancestors demand an offering in exchange for power."
"You and your child will be a fine offering."
"No! No!" I screamed, my canines growing as I growled. "You will not take my baby, I will kill all of you!!" I yelled out, struggling to get free from their hold.
"No, you won't! And neither will Klaus, or Elijah! When your baby is born, you will offer her up to those who came before us."
I cried and shook my head as I continued to struggle against the witches'.
"I'm sorry, Malia, but this is the way it had to be."
I growled at Genevieve, sobs racking my body. "No! No!" I screamed in pain, arching my back. "No!" I yelled, struggling. I roared as loud as I could.
Outside, Klaus weakly stumbled down the street as he heard Malia's horrified screams. Fully enraged, he screamed at the top of his lungs.
Together, they roared.
