CHAPTER SIX
"From all the poems written on the subject of unrequited love, there are so few on the pain of being the object of that affection. The truth is, it's not love on which the strongest foundations are built. It's the decency of merciful lies."
"Ugh," I groaned and rolled over. "I don't wanna get up," I complained to my sister. I opened up one eyes and saw her glaring at me. I also noticed that I accidentally hit her in the face with my hand. "Oops." I got off the bed and made it into the shower.
"Hurry up while you're at it," She told me. Even if I was pregnant, she still rushes me. I rolled my eyes and quickly took a steaming hot shower.
"I'm out," I announced after finally getting out of the bathroom and saw her run into the bathroom, shutting the door behind her. I quickly got changed into overalls which I put a white shirt under it. I put on my leather combat boots as soon as Hayley walked out of the bathroom. She quickly got dressed and we made our way towards the kitchen. We passed the room Klaus and Elijah was in.
As they walked by, Elijah followed Malia's every movement while Klaus watched him. Klaus didn't like the way he was looking at Malia which made him angry and also confused on why he was acting like this. He surely didn't love her. Or did he?
I sat down on a stool as Hayley searched for milk. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Elijah walk in.
"Good morning," He acknowledged us, sending both of us a small smile.
"Hey." Both Hayley and I said simultaneously. We looked at each other and smiled. We did that every so often as if we were twins. Rebekah then entered the room through the back door, dragging a trashcan behind her.
"Listen, I know Malia and I are the only ones in this house that actually drink milk, but would it kill any of you to make sure it's on the grocery list?" Hayley asked, looking at Rebekah as her eyebrows scrunched together.
"Speaking of, add bleach," Rebekah stated as she stomped through the kitchen and into the living room, dragging the trash can behind her.
Elijah dug around in a cabinet as Hayley pulled ice cream out of the freezer. I smiled at her in satisfaction, she knows how much I love my ice-cream. "You know," Elijah started, "I do hope my siblings were hospitable to you two, in my absence," He said, not looking at us, still scrounging for something in the cabinets.
"In your absence, as you like to call it, which is a way-too-polite way of saying that your brother put a dagger in your heart..." I started with a sigh, leaning against the counter. I looked up to see Elijah bringing a bowl, a spoon, and a bag of cereal towards me. "We have been attacked by French Quarter vampires, We've had to live in a house with a secret dungeon full of coffins, and we were nearly murdered by witches who are convinced my baby is Lucifer," I stated as if it was a everyday thing. "Also let's not start with the wolf or wolves that have been protecting Hayley and I," I added a moment of silence.
Elijah smiled sympathetically as he pulled orange juice and milk out of the fridge, pouring both Hayley and I a bowl of cereal, and then filled them with milk.
Hayley then noticed the milk, giving a sheepish smile to Elijah. "Oh...milk."
"They've been fine. Your siblings are weirdly protective, I know I have you to thank for that," I informed him with a small smile.
"I'm just happy to see that you're in one piece," He stated with a smile. "So, back to the murderous witches." He then handed us the bowls of cereal. "I have some concerns," He announced to us.
"They're evil. And, my life is still magically linked to Sophie Deveraux, which is not comforting," I told him, taking a spoon full of cereal and shoved it into my mouth.
"Yes, I think it's time we took care of that little problem," He informed me which made me perk up. I gave hin a 'really!?' Look.
"I am all for it. As soon as they're unlinked, we get to leave this crap town," Rebekah stated as she dragged a dead girl's body across the kitchen floor. "Who do we have to kill?"
"Probably no one," Elijah told his sister. Hayley and I both looked at him questioningly. "Alright, potentially everyone," He said and turned to leave. Those words brought a smile to my lips.
In my bedroom, I winced in pain as I grasped my neck. When I pulled my hand away, I noticed blood on my fingers. Rebekah must of heard my intake of breath because she walked in, looking concerned.
"What the hell was that?" Rebekah asked as she made her way to me.
"Hell if I know, it felt like I was being stabbed," I told her as Hayley walked into the room.
Hayley, Rebekah and I then got a dawning realization that something bad was happening.
Elijah and Klaus find Sabine on the floor of the kitchen and Elijah helped her up.
"What happened?" Elijah asked gruffly.
"It was Agnes," Sabine told the two Originals. She rubbed head as she looked around. "Her men took Sophie."
"Day one with you in charge, brother, and already the witch linked to Malia has been abducted by zealots," Klaus told his brother with a playful and amused smile on his face.
"Where is she?" Elijah asked Sabine.
"If I tell you where Agnes is, you'll just kill her," Sabine stated to Elijah with a glare set on her features.
"Isn't that obvious?" Klaus asked as he had his hands behind his back.
"Look, I know she's a little..." she paused to find the right word. "coo-coo," she finally said., "but she's our last living Elder. That might not mean a lot to you, but it means plenty to us. The Elders are the one ones who can do important spells," She told the two brothers who were getting impatient.
"Like completing the Harvest ritual?" Elijah asked her.
"You know about that?" She asked him in confusion.
"Oh, you'd be astounded by the things I know," Elijah stated in a mysterious voice, narrowing his eyes.
"Allow me to entertain you with today's list of priorities," Klaus started as he walked towards the witch. "One, unlink your friend Sophie so she no longer controls the fate of the woman carrying my child." He paused. "Two, convince my brother to accept my heartfelt apologies for some recently dodgy behavior. Three..." He then acted like he was thinking. "there is no three," He finished.
"I believe what my brother is attempting to communicate, here, is that neither the life of this Elder, nor the Harvest ritual, nor your coven's connection to magic are of any relevance to him, whatsoever," Elijah explained as he stood in front of Sabine. He stood there for a few seconds. "Now talk."
Rebekah entered the room where Hayley and I were in, I was sitting in an armchair. "Time for the demon spawn to snack!" She announced.
"I really wish you wouldn't call her that," I complained. "She's no demon spawn," I added, looking down at my stomach.
"Oh, sorry, have you picked another name yet?" She asked me sarcastically. She held out basket of fruit towards me. "Take one, the plantation's lousy with them," She informed me. I chose an apple and grasped it in my hand. "How's your neck?" She asked me.
"I feel fine..." I started. "which is weird. I'm sure it's Sophie-related," I told them as I watched Hayley grab an apple.
"Then, do me a favor, and don't die on my watch!" I'll never hear the end of it," She told me, raising her perfectly plucked eyebrows.
"You know," Hayley started. "when I first met you, I thought you were a real bitch," She finished which made me smile.
"What changed your mind?" Rebekah asked her with a smile on her face.
"Oh, I still think you're a bitch!" Hayley then smiled. "I've just grown to like that about you," She added.
"I've always liked Rebekah. We practically have the same personality," I stated with a smirk. "Love you, Beks." I told her with a chuckle.
She chuckled too. "Aw, well, that's sweet of you to say." Her face then turned serious. "Remember it when I'm gone," She told us which made me frown.
"Gone? Where are you going?" I asked her as I sat up in my seat.
"I only came to town to make sure everything was okay with Elijah. He's fine, and he hasn't punished Klaus for daggering him, so...as usual, they'll be thick as thieves, and I'll be left to clean up the mess," She explained to us. "It's time for me to fly the coop," She added, pushing a strand of her blonde locks behind her ear.
"Oh..." I said in disappointment. I went to bite the apple, but then I started to feel woozy.
"What's wrong?" Rebekah and Hayley asked me with frowns on their faces.
I shook my head a little. "I dunno, probably morning sickness..." I stated, I then started to feel a little hot. "I... I don't feel so good."
Rebekah placed her hand on my forehead. "Oh, you're burning up, actually, She informed me.
I laid in bed as Rebekah blotted sweat from my forehead and chest. "Stop fussing, will you?" She asked me. "Elijah will be here any minute," She told me as she continued trying to cool me down.
"I feel like I've been microwaved," I complained. I looked over at the other side of the bed to come face to face with a frowning Hayley. "It's not a nice feeling."
"Hey! Just because you're carrying a baby, doesn't mean you get to act like one!" Rebekah exclaimed to me. "I'm sure my little niece is healing you up as we speak," She told me with a small smile, brushing a strand of my hair out of my dace.
Elijah then ran in with Sophie. Rebekah got off the bed to greet them.
"What the hell is she doing here?" She asked harshly, looking at Sophie. Hayley got up as well, growling.
Sophie sighed. "I'm trying to help," She informed Rebekah and Hayley.
"Help? You're the reason we're in this bloody mess!" Rebekah exclaimed to the witch then turned to her brother. "Why aren't we unlinked with this witch already, Elijah?" She asked him, looking at Sophie with hatred.
"If I wasn't burning up and had a child to think about, I would be ripping your throat out," I threatened. "With my teeth," I added with a snarl.
"Rebekah, let her do what she can," Elijah told his sister.
"I may know a way to slow the fever down. But, I'm gonna need some special herbs," Sophie told us. She turned to Rebekah, "I'll text you a list," She said with wide eyes. Elijah nodded at her in encouragement, and she finally gave in.
Rebekah smiled patronizingly. "Fine. Happy to play the fetch girl." She stomped out of the room, and shoved the towel she was using into Elijah's chest as she left.
"Elijah," I complained. He made his way towards me as Hayley watched.
I was wrapped in a towel, sitting outside beside the swimming pool. Rebekah stood behind me, checking my temperature, while Elijah assisted Sophie in helping with the herbs.
Elijah removed his coat. "She's burning up! We need to do this now," He exclaimed to Sophia as he ran towards me.
"Get her in the water!" Sophia told Elijah. He jumped into the pool and helped me in. Sophie mixed herbs in a cup.
"I don't see how a midnight swim is supposed to help," Rebekah commented, her arms crossed.
"Her temperature is sky-high. The water, with the help of the herbs, should cool us down," Sophia explained to Rebekah. She got into the pool and handed me a drink. "Drink this!" I obliged as she then turned to Elijah. "You're going to have to get her heart rate down," She told him as if it was obvious.
"How do you suggest I do that?" He asked her as he helped me.
"Hold her," Sophia stated and Elijah looked at her. "It's a natural human remedy to slow the heart rate and reduce blood pressure," She explained and I nodded numbly in agreement. Stiles once told me that in one of his rants.
"This is never gonna work," Rebekah commented from outside of the pool.
Elijah the held me bridal-style in the pool. "Davina will break the link, we just need time," He told his baby sister. I clung to Elijah and groaned as I gasped for breath.
"I can't breathe!" I exclaimed, trying to catch my breathe.
"Okay, long deep breaths, Malia! Look at me," He told me and I did as was told, but my mind went to the time I walked in on Lydia kissing Stiles after he had a panic attack. "Long deep breaths, just focus on the sound of my voice," He told me in a low but panicking voice. "You'll be okay. You'll be okay," He whispered to me, pushing my hair back away from my face as I looked into his eyes, listening to his words.
"Ahhh!" I screamed in agony as the clock chimed, saying that it was 9:00pm. I heard Sophia gasp but I was in too much pain. The world around me started to fade in and out as my breathing became harder to comtrol.
Sophia them look up to the sky, "I just felt it lift," She stated after a few moments of me grunting in pain.
I then started to calm down as Elijah looked stunned. I got out of Elijah's arms but still stood against him. Sophie removed one of her earrings and poked her palm with it. I didn't even feel anything. Elijah held my hand, he looked over my head and stared at Hayley. Elijah quickly let go of my hand and lead me out of the pool.
"Come on, let's go," Elijah spoke softly into my ear as he helped me over to Hayley who quickly latched onto me.
"Elijah...as soon as your brother finds out that the link is broken, he'll kill Agnes. I know you don't owe me anything, but please, don't let him kill her," Sophie begged. Elijah pulled his phone out of his jacket on the table. "Elijah!" She yelled. "She's our only access to the power we need to survive. Promise me that you'll stop him!" She begged him with wide eyes.
Elijah dialed a number into his phone and raised it to his ear. "It's me, where are you?" The person, most likely Klaus, must of started talking. "Don't hurt her. I'll be there shortly," He told the person on the other side of the phone. He hung up and turned to Sophie. "I'll make you one last promise. I won't let my brother kill Agnes," He promised her. Sophie nodded at him, and Elijah picked up his jacket and shoes, and walked away.
When Sophia nodded and went to walk away, I stood up and roughly grabbed her arm. "I know you were just using me to save your people, but try it again, and I'll kill you," I threatened her with a growl. I walked towards Hayley who wrapped a towel around me. As we were walking away, I heard Sophie sigh in defeat.
There was another knock at the door, Josh was just at the door so I thought it was him again.
"Ugh! What the hell, Josh!?" I asked in frustration as I opened up the door but was met by a dark skinned man.
"Hi there, I'm Marcel. I don't think we've met!"
