CHAPTER FOURTEEN

"I saw a girl that was broken, a broken smile and a broken heart. Little did she know everyone around her saw that one day, she would change the world with the elegance and grace that would flow from her heart."

Rebekah laid on an old mattress in a poor state suffering from the werewolf bites she received from last night; there is a dripping sound by her bedside as she is coming into a conscious state. She shot awake gasping only to look around and see a very familiar hospital in full swing; the sound of screaming patients in agony and bustling nurses and doctors attending to them; all dying from Spanish Influenza. She is hallucinating, as we see she is really in an abandoned hospital in New Orleans; antique hospital beds, wheelchairs and equipment left behind and forgotten. She breathed heavily and gasped with fear as she looks around lost in her hallucination. Blood dripping on the floor; a man dropped a bloody rag; another man sits up in bed and coughed out blood. She gasped as two doctors drop another patient onto a cot and wheel him toward the morgue. She slowly rolled out of the bed, weakened by the werewolf venom in her system. A woman's laughter is heard echoing through the corridors.

"Who's there?" She asks between breathes, as she was breathing deeply. No answer, she struggled to get out of that room as quickly as possible and escape. As she reached the door, she plunges through it escaping outside. "How the hell did I get here?" She asked herself as she stumbled toward the steps but before she can go any further she is stabbed in the heart with a wooden stake. She gasped and falls to the ground only to look into the eyes of the familiar face that stabbed her. "Genevieve!"

"Rebekah, tell me you're not leaving already. I thought we might reminisce."

Rebekah fell unconscious.

Meanwhile inside, Celeste looked over the body of Klaus who is shirtless and lying on a bed tied down by restraints. He too is weakened by Papa Tunde's blade which has disappeared inside of him. He groaned and started to stir.

The witches have gathered to say goodbye to Sophie who was killed. Monique stood emotionless with a candle as a man laid bricks over Sophie's grave. Elijah appeared and quickly took out three people at vampire speed, Monique is not phased but others gasp.

"My siblings have been taken...where are they?" He asked her, fixing the sleeve of his suit.

"You're interrupting my Aunt Sophie's consecration," Monique told him with no emotions in her eyes but you could tell that she was a little aggravated. Elijah looked confused as he looked at Sophie's tomb.

"How did this happen?" He asked Monique.

"Aunt Sophie was a casualty of war," She told him simply.

"Monique I recommend you give me what I want unless of course you'd like me to level this place and everything in it," He threatened as he narrowed his brown eyes at her.

"That won't be necessary. I have a message for you from Celeste." She put her hand out in front of her performing a spell. Elijah pulled at the collar of his shirt uncomfortable, he ripped open the top button of his shirt to see the name *Theresa* in italics tattooed on his chest; Monique continued as two more names appear; he rolled up his sleeve to see the familiar name *Sabine*. "to find what you're looking for follow the path she left behind."

Elijah walked in quickly as Marcel is sending out more troops to search the city. "Anything?" He asked urgently.

"They're putting eyes and ears out everywhere; day walkers are working every contact we've got. Cops, dock workers, guys in the Treme. Word is out anyone trying to earn favor with me gets a lifetime of it if they find them," Marcel explained to the worried Originals who were in a rush.

"Good. I need a pen and paper." He walked away and Marcel followed.

"Hey, am I taking orders from you now, or are we in this together?" Marcel asked him with narrowed eyes as Elijah removed his jacket.

"Pen and paper, Marcellus," He told him calmly then turned around to face Marcel. "Now!" He finished taking his jacket off.

"I want her back just as much as you do, you know... The both of them." He turned to fetch the pen and paper from the desk drawer as Elijah removed his shirt.

"Hayley! Malia!" Elijah yelled out to us.

"Elijah! You're back. Did you find any–" Hayley  stopped talking as we took in his appearance – shirtless and covered in tattoos."–thing? What is happening?" She finished asking her questions.

"Damn," I muttered to myself as I noticed that Elijah had a nice body. Elijah chuckled and then quickly became serious.

"I need you to make a list of these names," He told Hayley as we made our way towards him. We walked around him to see all the names. I stopped once I saw the name Sabine on his wrist.

"Sabine? Elijah, what is this?" I was worried as I'm pretty sure he never had these names on him before.

"I believe they represent the names of the women Celeste inhabited for the past two centuries," He explained to both Hayley and I.

Marcel rejoined us and handed a piece of paper and pen to Hayley. "It's called a Devinette. It's old school. Kind of a riddle. Witches use them to teach their kids. Solve it and it disappears," He explains to Hayley and I as we continued to look at the names on Elijah's chest.

"Why? What's the point?" Hayley asked, she was as confused as I was.

"Celeste forced me to make a choice between yourself and my siblings, and now she means to mock that choice, taunting me with a childish game. The longer the game, the more they suffer," He paused as he looked down. "To find Klaus and Rebekah, we need to solve this riddle. The solution lies somewhere in these names." He lifted up his arms to get a better look at the names.

"The name next to Sabine..." Marcel paused as he pointed at the name. "Annie La Fleur, she's the witch that was shunned from her coven just over a year ago. Never knew why, but I can find out," He told Elijah, looking into his eyes.

Elijah and Marcel go to the village where Annie lived after she was shunned; they are able to speak to someone who knew her.

"Annie was a good girl, the witches did her wrong shunning her like that; claiming she was doing dark magic; there's no way but they had proof. So she just quit and I can't really blame her for that cause once you've been shunned what's the point in going on, you know?" The man explained to both vampires.

Elijah was walking down a busy street on his cell phone with Hayley and Malia, explaining what happened to Annie La Fleur.

"She killed herself?" I asked as I looked at Hayley with wide eyes.

"Yes, drowned herself in the Mississippi, to be precise; Celeste was clearly tired of the body and ready to take Sabine's," Elijah explained to us as I used my super hearing to hear his side of the conversation.

"How do you know that?" Hayley asked him as she helped me make my way down the stairs. I could've made it on my own but she wants to be the overprotective twin. I rolled my eyes at that.

"Because she leapt to her death from the very location Celeste and I had our first kiss," Elijah stated which made me look at Hayley who was trying her best to hide her jealousy but I know her well enough to know her.

"Poetic, I guess... in a creepy vendetta sort of way," I commented as we finally got to the bottom or the stairs. I rolled my eyes at Hayley and took my hand away from hers.

"All these names, these lives, stolen that Celeste might take her revenge. I suppose we have no choice but to see where they take us." He took a quick breath. "Hayley, Malia, I have to go. I'll call you back."

"Elijah, wait," Hayley said softly.

"What is it?" He asked, I could hear the worry in his voice. We sat down on a bench.

"Ask Marcel if he knows anything about a name on that list Brynne Deveraux. Sophie said that it was her family's bloodline that put the curse on the crescent wolves, but Celeste said that she was the only one that could break it. If Brynne Deveraux was actually Celeste when she cast the spell, then maybe Celeste can still break it," Hayley explained to Elijah and I nodded in agreement even if he couldn't see me.

"I'll see what he knows."

"Elijah." She swallowed as she looked up at the sky. "I'm really sorry that you're going through this. If I had known that Celeste made you choose who to help–" She didn't get to finish the sentence as he cut her off.

"You were both going to die in that fire, along with my brother's child there was no choice." He hung up before either of us could respond.

Elijah and Marcel were going through boxes and books for any information they could find. Elijah flipped a page and put his finger down as he saw a name.

"Marcel, here's another name from our list: Brynne Deveraux. Says here she drowned herself some twenty years ago," Elijah informed. "Do you recognize the name?" He asked Marcel.

"Brynne?" Marcel asked as he tilted his head. "Yeah, yeah, we used to hang out a bit," He told Elijah with a smirk.

"You can spare me the details, please," Elijah told him calmly. Marcel gave him an amused smile.

"She used to do some spells for me now and then. Girl had power, cursed a whole pack of werewolves just because they were pissing me off." Marcel walked towards Elijah. "Speaking of, what do you think Klaus is gonna do when he finds out that you left him to suffer while you saved Hayley, Malia and her wolf friends?" He asked him with all seriousness.

"Let's avoid discussing matters that are not your concern, shall we, Marcellus?" Elijah asked - no, more like demanded him, looking down at the book in his hand.

"Oh, come on, Elijah. I got guys all over this city. You honestly think that I don't know that the Crescent wolves had a little family reunion out at the plantation last night?" Marcel asked as he slightly narrowed his eyes at Elijah. "Thanks for letting the house burn, by the way. Good riddance! But my question is, what's Hayley and Malia doing with that bunch?" He asked, tilting his forward so he was looking at Elijah through his eyelashes. He was serious.

"Marcel, I'm aware of your history with the city's wolves, and I assume you understand that if you lay a finger upon Hayley or Malia, it will be the last thing you do on this earth," Elijah threatened the vampire.

"I see I hit a nerve." He paused as Elijah skimmed through names and then stopped on one. "Just when we were getting along," Marcel teased.

"We were right!" Elijah said and then looked up at Marcel. "Every name upon my flesh signifies a witch who died by her own hand. All but one." He showed the name to Marcel.

"Clara Summerlin." Marcel shook his head. "Ring any bells?" He asked Elijah who pit down the book.

"None."

"Okay, well, if she didn't off herself then how did she die?" Marcel questioned.

"Influenza Epidemic of 1919." His tattoos start to disappear. They both look at his arms as the tattoos disappear. When they were all gone, Elijah put both arms up. "I suppose we have our answer," He paused as Marcel looked up to his eyes, "though I have no idea what it means." They both looked at each other and then to Elijah's arms.

HAYLEY was typing on the computer as I was sitting by her, Elijah then entered the room. "Hey, look, I found–" Elijah stoppef Hayley from finishing her sentence with a gesture, indicating silence.

"You were right about the Deveraux witch." Before either of us could say anything, Marcel entered the room.

"Find anything about Clara, the mystery witch?" He asked Hayley and I.

"Not much. She was a nurse as the Fleur De Lis Sanatorium," I told him, sitting back in my seat and crossed my arms. I then saw how Marcel froze which made me narrow my eyes at him. "Recognize her?" I asked him, suspiciously. Hayley then clicked on a picture and pointed to her.

"Top row, second from the right," Hayley informed Elijah.

"No, I don't," Elijah told us as Marcel crossed his arms and walked away from the desk, looking towards the floor. "Marcel?" Elijah questioned. He looks up and recognized the odd behavior as well. "Marcel? Do I need to remind you that Niklaus and Rebekah are somewhere suffering horribly? If you know something, talk," Elijah told him and I nodded in agreement and leaned forward in my seat.

"The Sanatorium. That's where you'll find them," Marcel told us and then walked away from Elijah, his arms still crossed.

"Are you sure? How do you know?" I asked and stood up, glaring at Marcel. There was something that he wasn't telling us and I wanted to know what it was.

"I just know," He replied to me.

"How do you know?" Elijah asked him, looking at Marcel with a questioning look. Marcel looked up at Elijah with a hesitant look in his eyes.

"If I'm right, you need to know exactly what we're walking into. We did something, Rebekah and I..." He trailed off guiltily and looked up at Elijah who eyes' widened in surprise and wonder. "I think the witches are trying to use it against her. It was, uh... something that you're not gonna like." He glanced up at Elijah but quickly looked back down to the floor. He then started to explain everything.

"For the better part of a century, I have wondered how father found us, what foolish mistake that we had made to destroy our time in the one place that we could finally call home. Did you know, I even blamed myself for a time, Marcellus?" Elijah asked him calmly but I saw the rage in his eyes and I understood it. I blamed myself for the wreck before I found out the truth. It was all because of the Desert Wolf. Elijah grabbed Marcel by the neck and slammed him against the wall on the other side of the room.

"Elijah..!" Hayley said panicked as she ran towards them. I literally had to hold myself back from doing the same thing that Elijah had done.

"Niklaus treated you like a son," Elijah told Marcel.

"Rebekah. I loved her. I still love her. All we ever wanted was to be together, but as long as Klaus was around, that was never gonna happen," Marcel explained to Elijah, still being held up by the neck. "But hey, I guess you wouldn't know anything about that, huh?" He asked which made Elijah look down. He then let go of Marcel.

"When Klaus learns the truth, there will be no end to his rage. I will not let my sister suffer that wrath," Elijah told Marcel and I nodded in agreement. I hated Rebekah for what she had done to Klaus and Elijah but she was also my best friend.

"Then we need to get to them before he learns the truth."

Celeste walked out the front of the sanatorium, going down the steps. Hayley and I snuck up on her and I hit her over the head with a shovel. I smirked in satisfaction as she fell to the ground with a groan of pain. She fell unconscious which made my smirk widen.

"Hey, there, witch-bitch. You, Hayley and I are gonna have a little chat." I said through clenched teeth.

Tbh, I hated how Rebekah treated Klaus...I mean after all, he is a precious cinnamon roll. If I were her, I wouldn't of called for Mikael even if he ruined my life, he still would be my brother. Ugh! I hate how people treat my precious Klaus!! Okay... rant over!
