CHAPTER FIVE

" aggressively doesn't know "

Hayley and I walked to where we heard arguing, a cup of water in my hand.

"You can't go out there now. I need to gather the witches' remains and consecrate them. If I don't get to them before sundown, we'll lose the link to their magic," Sophie practically begged Klaus, looking at him with wide doe like eyes.

"Those witches tried to kill Malia," He told her with a glare on his face. "And Hayley," He added. "I'd prefer for Marcel's informant not to find anything that would lead him back to us, to her, or to... you know," He said, moving his hand around until he pointed at my stomach. "that."

"You are all class," Hayley muttered, standing my by side. I put a hand to my stomach and held back a growl. Even if I never really had a mother, I still wanted to be one. I have always had a thing for kids.

Klaus then pointed at Sophie as he began to walk away. "Stay put," He told her, she just threw her hands up as if she was asking, 'where would I go!?' "And save the rest of your story 'til I return." He then fully left the room and the building.

I looked at Hayley and raised an eyebrow, she could clearly see that I had my thinking cap on.

Sophie was packing a little bottle into her backpack, when Hayley and I entered the mausoleum.

"Hey," Sophie said with wide eyes as Hayley and I gave her forced smiles. "What the hell?" She asked us.

"You're going out there anyway, aren't you?" I asked as I gestures to her small backpack. "We wanna go with you," I told her, crossing my arms.

"No, thanks. Already got assaulted by Klaus this morning. Don't need a repeat," She told us, pointing a finger between us. She went to walk past us but I got in her way before she could.

"What if whatever is responsible for all those dead witches is still out there?" Hayley asked her with raised eyebrows. "We've already established that it likes us and hates witches, so you'll be safer with us," Hayley explained to the I-want-to-get-out-of-here-and'now-witch.

"Sorry if I'm not buying your sudden concern for my safety," She told the both of us as she went to go past us again but Hayley blocked the exit, forcing Sophia to stop.

"Listen. The whole reason I came to this stupid town in the first place was to learn more about my family. Malia cam along because she's the only family I have left, or that I think I have left. Your sister's the one that told us that Marcel ran the werewolves out of the Quarter, into the bayou. And, last night, I'm pretty sure that some guardian-angel-wolf saved our lives. So, we're coming with you," Hayley ranted to the witch, throwing her hands around frantically, her eyes wide.

At that time, Rebekah walked in, joining us.

"Could you three be more idiotic?" She rolled her eyes in annoyance. Hayley, Sophie and I looked around at each other and sighed. "Two can play the follow-game, you know! You heard Klaus, he and Marcel are headed right where you're going," She told us, giving me a pointed look.

"So distract them. Because unless you wanna see lock a hormonal, pregnant werecoyote in a tomb, I'm coming with you. And wouldn't Elijah be mad if he hears that the baby, Hayley and I died of asphyxiation?" I asked as Rebekah stared at me, annoyed. I smiled proudly, though, the big word that Lydia had taught me finally coming to use.

Sophie rolled her eyes and sighed again, resigned to having us tag along.

As we went walking, Rebekah called Klaus. I decided to not listen in on their conversation, instead I looked around at the scenery.

I remembered my time in the woods as a coyote. I remembered the nights I stayed alone in my little den, with my little sisters' doll. That was the only thing I had to keep me going. After awhile, I kept the doll in the car, the car that we crashed. The thing is, it was all my real mothers' fault that I transformed and killed my adoptive mother and sister.

I protectively put my hand on my stomach, looking towards Hayley who was also looking at our surroundings. I smiled at the sight of her. Our whole story was very complicated.

My adoptive dad married to a woman aka Hayley's mom. Hayley's mom died forever ago, Hayley and I never met her. I didn't even know Hayley existed until two years ago, when I left behind the pack. My real mother tried to kill me, but killed my adoptive dad, instead.

So now, my younger adoptive sister and adoptive parents are dead. I killed my real mother. Peter was kicked far away from Beacon Hills. Derek was changed into a real werewolf so he went away. I broke up with Stiles because I knew he didn't love me the way he loved Lydia. Lydia, one of my best friends that I left behind in Beacon Hills.

So I left what was left of the broken pack, to travel around with my sister. That was when we landed in Mystic Falls. I ended up in bed with Klaus because I wanted to get Stiles out of my mind. Hayley and I left Mystic Falls to try and find Hayley's family. That was when we landed in New Orleans. Where the magic happens.

"So, this Harvest thingy-tell me more," Rebekah demanded Sophia, wanting to start a conversation.

"Klaus said to wait," Sophia simply said, not looking at Rebekah.

"Yes," Rebekah said. "He also said to stay out of the bayou and yet here we are, amongst the crawly, buzzy creatures," She complained, kicking mud off of her shoes.

"For an Original, you sure do complain a lot," I noted, letting my fingertips graze the bark on the trees that I passed.

"We're here," Hayley stated.

We have reached the place where the witches were killed. They're all bloodied and ripped apart, and a dismembered head lies near the bodies. Sophie, who looked sick, kneeled down to dig around her bag for the ingredients she needed.

"Whoa," Hayley and I both gasped. We saw a huge pawprint in the mud. I looked up at a nearby tree, there were three bloody scratches in the bark.

"Is that a wolf track?" Sophia asked once she saw the paw prints. We heard a crunching noise, like footsteps, nearby. I stood up in a defensive mode, ready to fight.

"Who's there?" Rebekah called out. The person approaching us was a guy, most likely one of Marcel's men.

"What the hell?" He asked then looked at Rebekah. "An Original?" He asked then ran away with vampire speed, leaving us just standing there, mouths agape.

Rebekah quickly got out her phone and dialed Klaus. She walked a little aways from us to talk to her brother.

Rebekah told us what she was needed to do, so she left.

It's night now, Hayley, Sophie and I were returning to Sophie's truck.

"Those people, all this, because of a vision about my baby you don't think is true?" I asked with my eyes narrowed in confusion.

"Look," she paused as she opened her trunk. "I love Sabine, but she's the witch equivalent of a drama queen. I've learned to take little stock in whatever she says or sees. Just kinda wish she'd kept her mouth shut," She explained to me.

"The Harvest ritual," I said, glancing at Hayley. "You said you didn't believe in it. Were you right?" I asked her with wide eyes.

"No." She shook her head. "I saw it with my own eyes. It was working." She nodded her head slightly and took in a small breathe. "It was real," She told me.

"So, how can you be so sure Sabine's vision isn't?" Hayley asked the question I was wanting to ask.

Sophie didn't answer, she just stood there for a few seconds then closed her trunk.

Rebekah poured several drinks into shot glasses as she talked to Hayley and I.

"I don't care if we have to get you a leash, that was your last trip to the bayou. What is it with you and those wolves, anyway?" Rebekah asked Hayley and I.

"I feel like we're connected somehow. I don't know. Maybe it's just some pipe dream that I have of finding any real family out there. But sometimes, when I feel like it's me against the world, it keeps me going." Hayley explained, I then faked cough. "That was until I met Malia two years ago," She added, giving me a dramatic eye roll.

Rebekah gave Hayley a sympathetic look and handed her a drink, also handing me one. I side-eyed her and Rebekah had a look of realization on her face as shd suddenly remembered that I was pregnant and couldn't drink, so she drank my glass in one gulp, and then drank her own.

"Oh, right. Well, if you ask me, family is a pain in the behind," She commented. Hayley and I both rolled our eyes. "And as for being in it alone, how dare you? I don't ruin a perfectly fabulous pair of boots traipsing through the bayou for just anyone," Rebekah told Hayley with a small smile. Hayley and I both smiled, and Rebekah downed her second drink. Our conversation was interrupted by Klaus walking through the front door. "Nik, finally. What-" She cut herself off.

Elijah walked through the door after Klaus with a huge smile. Rebekah ran to Elijah and hugged him tight. Elijah saw me over Rebekah's shoulder, and we smiled at each other, though Hayley left the room right after, and I trailed after her.

I walked to the backyard by Hayley's side. We just looked out into the night sky.

"You're back," I acknowledged Elijah who stood behind us.

"I'm back," He said offering me a smile as I turned to look at him.

We looked at each other for a moment, and then I slapped him across the face.

"Don't make promises you can't keep, asshole," I told him with a glare. "Welcome home," I added, walking away from my sister and Elijah.

"She forgives you, she just has gotten hurt a lot during her life," Hayley told Elijah then walked away to catch up to her sister.

Elijah touched his right cheek, the one Malia slapped, and smiled.

"Everything that brought us here to New Orleans was a lie. This story that Sophie Deveraux fabricated, this struggle for control of the French Quarter, this war between vampires and witches, wasn't over territory at all, this was over Davina," Elijah explained as we were scattered around the study, Elijah being behind the desk as Hayley and I were leaning against the wall, arms crossed. Klaus and Rebekah was sitting in two different seats.

"Eight months ago, Sophie Deveraux and her sister Jane-Anne lost everything," Elijah said and we looked at him confused. "Now, four months after that, a young pregnant girl wanders into their restaurant," He stated, glancing at me. "Suddenly, all hope is renewed." He nodded at me. "Jane-Anne actually sacrificed her life so that her sister can use you to find Davina. If Sophie Deveraux is successful in capturing Davina, she can return Jane-Anne's daughter back to life," He explained, looking around at us. "We thought we'd come here to wage a war for power. This is about family. In order to return her niece to life, Sophie Deveraux will fight to the death." He paused as he looked over the four of us. "That makes her more dangerous than anyone."
