Chapter 8. Advantage

I woke up and blinked a few times, taking note of how late it was. 10 in the morning. Mr.Xu is going to murder me. I jumped out of bed and dressed up. I skipped dinner and sprinted down the hallway. I had to leave as soon as possible. I ran through the hanger straight into Sunstreaker as he came out of another hallway. We both ended upon the floor. Sunstreaker groaned and looked up but so did I. "I am sorry." I jumped back on my feet and offered him my hand. "Why this rush?" He asked. "It's 10. I should have been at work 3 hours ago."

"Calm down, calm down."

"No! I can't call down, Sunstreaker. I should have been there and I am not there." He covered my mouth. "Be quiet, stop." I felt tears welling up in a panic. "I know you're upset but it's going to be fine, okay?" He asked. I shook my head and frantically scanned the room. "I shouldn't have come here. It was a mistake—" he cut me off again. "Amethyst, please. It's not a big deal. You make over hours. We are talking about three hours. Just calmly explained to Xu what happened—"

"But he'll hit me again."

Sunstreaker was obviously shocked. I sat down and buried my face in my hands. I felt him sit beside me and wrap his arms around me. "I try so hard to fit in but it's hard and no one accepts me. It's not my fault I got dumped. I followed school, which was a hell itself and now... no one wants to hire me because I come straight off the streets. I am just so tired of trying to prove myself. It's helpless and useless."

Sunstreaker pulled me against his warm and firm chest to comfort me. After a couple of minutes, I managed to calm myself down and brushed some tears off my cheeks. "I need to talk to Jack..." Sunstreaker arched my brow. "Why? Aren't you in a fight with him?" He asked. "Never takes too long before we make it up to each other. No, there's something I need to do..." I sighed as I got up. "I see you later..."

I watched Amethyst walk off and got up. Sideswipe was doing some work outs and we were about to go into town and visit Starbucks. "Sunny," he chirped and flashed me a grin. "Sideswipe..." I said down and folded my hands. "What's wrong?" He asked. "Amethyst, she was upset and I tried to calm her down but she was inconsolable. She was three hours late for work and I know how much it means to her but... I don't think this will end well for her. They are taking advantage of her I actually start to feel sorry for her," I said.

Sideswipe sighed and sat beside me. "You think she wants to work here?" I looked up. It sounded totally ridiculous because why would she want to work here but on the other hand. Amethyst has no place to go, she's incredibly smart and sweet. She got the spirit but not the muscles. She's so thin that when I hold I am afraid to break. Her skin is pale and she looks exhausted but if she gains some weight, I am sure she can in here. It's just hard to imagine her holding a gun or riffle right now, considered how skinny she is.

"I think she has the spirit but... she has some serious trust issues I am worried about. She's stressed out and tired. I don't want people to push her over the limit. She last few weeks she gave everything and with no result. Let's try to discuss this with her when she comes back, if she does," I stated. Sideswipe agreed and hugged me before he got up. "Starbucks?" He asked. I nodded and we got up. As we drove towards Starbucks, we saw Amethyst talking to Jack and other vague figure. I didn't think it was an argument but the person was talking to her like he was.

Just the few seconds I saw Amethyst face, I saw desperation and sadness. As if she was about to burst into tears right there and now. Sideswipe and I decided not to interfere with her, Jack or this vague figure.
That night, she came to us. We were quite surprised to see her at 6 O'clock. "Amethyst," I said surprised. She flashed me a tired smile. She looked absolutely drained. She held up at least $200 bucks. "I can pay you back," she said to my brother. I instantly felt suspicious about it. How did she get two hundred dollar in one day?

"How did you get that?" I asked. "A new job," Was all she said as she handed my brother a hundred bucks. We watched her leave. "Something isn't right..." I mumbled.
That evening, we knocked on her door and she let us in. "What have you been doing? How did you get 200 bucks?" I asked. "I found a job that pays better..." she said. "Who gave this to you?" Sideswipe asked, raising his voice as he held up the 100 bucks. "A man."

"That man you were talking to today with Jack?" I asked. She sighed and sat down, "That was Mark. You were right, people take advantage of my problem. I am dying, I can't stay any longer on the streets without food. I don't even have my period anymore. I don't want to die and I am willing to do everything to keep myself alive. Even if it means I have to sell myself for a couple of hours to men."

I jumped on feet. "Are you insane! Amethyst, you can't do such thing! It's irresponsible and dangerous. Not just illness you can pick up but also the males. They can be dangerous and have bad intensions. I can't believe it, you stay at the base and you don't leave," I stated. Sideswipe hadn't said much and watched me leave the room.
