The Failure
The next day, I went to school on my normal routine and sat in class dozing off. Then, suddenly, an alarm started blaring. Everyone started panicking and over the speaker, I heard the principal say, "Evacuate immediately. There has been a fire at Melbourne Elementary. This is not a drill. Meet at the grass area!" Gulping, I remembered what Dad said about an accident. All the classes, scattered and scared, were led out by their teacher. People were screaming everywhere and out of the corner of my eyes, I saw the buildings next to ours, burning. I followed my class and slowly trailed behind. Then, I broke into a sprint in the opposite direction of where everyone was going. I dashed toward the fire and caught many surprised looks. It didn't matter. I felt a surge of energy and heard Dad whisper in my ear, "Good luck son." I had no idea what to do until I reached the elementary school's courtyard, covered in fire. And I saw Cameron, staring at his broken rocket. He was shouting and crying at the same time, but using my ears, I couldn't hear what he was saying. I reached him through my mind and heard him say, "Help me, please." That was when I knew what to do. Rushing through the gate, nothing could stop me. The fire hung onto me, but it didn't catch me. It was more like a reunion, like I became one with the fire. Cameron looked at me, wide-eyed, as I ran through the flames. The whole school creaked. I was almost there. Cameron stood there...in the circle of fire. Wooden boards from the ceiling of the structure above me blocked me from Cameron, but I ran right through them. The structure groaned. I was so close. I could smell his body odor. Ten feet, five feet, three feet...the structure collapsed. I dove for him and pushed him out of the way.
