Affection
I returned back to Earth and into my body. Everyone unfroze and rushed to me. Some people continued to stare and I felt their eyes boring on me, seemingly burning me to the core. Before I could respond to the sudden rush of energy, people were already crowding around me. "Hughs!" the teacher said in a shrill voice. "We haven't seen you in such a long time! Welcome back! What happened?" "I...um...had an accident and...yeah," I said. "Well, I'm sure you're OK now. So, now, class, we should get back to the lesson." Everyone groaned and released me. I sat at the only empty seat and tried to pay attention. The class was learning the distance formula, something that I learned when I was five years old. Wow, they really are stupid. The teacher droned on and I zoned out. When I woke up, it was time for lunch. I walked out of the classroom, gradually picking up my pace, and then remembered the paper bag Mom gave me. I opened it up and picked up a neatly packed lunch. I sat at an empty table but then, some kid yelled across the cafeteria, "Hughs! Over here! Don't you remember where you sat with us?" I reluctantly walked over and sat with a gang of guys. Quietly, I put away my lunch, because I didn't feel like eating. "Hey, you OK bro?" A tall guy with pimples said. "Usually, when it comes to lunchtime, you eat a horse! Appetite got you?" "Hey, quit pestering him, Josh! He's probably just not feeling well! What'd you expect? He's been out sick for a week!" a blond haired girl walking by said. "Suit yourself," Josh replied and leaned away. "Hughs, don't worry about them. They're just really happy to see you. They missed you so much I guess they thought you were..." the girl trailed off, unable to finish. "Dead?" the word came out of my mouth. "Um...sure, if you put it that way," the girl stammered and her face flushed, walked away. Happy. I understood everything the girl said except Happy. What was that word? I survived the rest of the school day and after school, I walked with Cameron home without meaning to. I asked him what Affection was and he replied, "It's like a fond attachment with someone close to you." I asked him if Happy was Affection and he said, "Well, if you miss someone and then they're happy to see you, I guess that's affection." That was the end of that conversation. Cameron continued blabbering about how him and his friends are creating a model rocket (only a model!) in science class and how they are going to launch it in front of a crowd. I reached my house and went in, ignored Mom's questions, and laid down on the bed, giving the excuse that I had a headache. My mind cleared except for the word: Happy. How come I never heard that basic words when I was at home? What did it really mean? There was only one person that had the answer to my questions: Dad. I concentrated hard, and tried to connect with Dad.
