Burning Buds
A scream escaped Frisk's lungs as she tripped into the dark chasm.
Falling
Falling
Falling
Thud
Her head smashed into the ground, then it all went black.
They heard a child's voice as they lied unconscious, "Long ago, two races ruled over earth; humans and monsters... One day, war broke out between the two races... After a long battle, the humans were victorious... They sealed the monsters underground with a magic spell...legends say, those who climb mount Ebott..... never return."
The darkness melted away as Frisk's eyes fluttered open. She looked around, seeing golden flowers all around her, they must have broke her fall, or else she surely would have died. She slowly got up and clutched her head. God it hurt. It felt like it was on fire, but she had to move, she had to get help.
She tried to stand up, but then crumpled to the ground, letting out a strangled whimper. She gritted her teeth together, feeling determination burning inside her. As she got back on her feet and leaned against one of the walls for support. It all hurt so bad. Tears began to prick in the corners of her eyes, as her vision began to blur. She kept going until she turned the corner, seeing a yellow flower in the middle of the room....smiling at her?
She looked down at the strange creature, surely she was hallucinating. She was about to continue when it began to speak, "Howdy! Don't just stand over there, come over here! We can play a game together!"
She tried to shake her head but only realized a second too late, that it was a bad decision. She let out a scream of agony as the pain flowed through her body, but then felt the cry suddenly cease itself as her mouth was covered by what appeared to be a vine. She felt the thorns of the vine, digging into her flesh, the hot, metallic, taste of blood soon melting onto her tongue.
"Golly, you are really bad at this game. Don't you know the rules?" His laugh echoed through the cavern as Frisk felt more vines wrap around her frail body. Her heart began to pound against the walls of her rib cage as she wiggled and squirmed, trying with all her might to escape the vines grasp on her. Every movement she made, caused the vines to wrap tighter and tighter, tearing through her flesh like paper, the hot sensation of blood covering her body.
"The rules are REALLY simple... they work just like how this world works.." The flower smirked as he tightened his grip on the child, watching their face contort with agony and fear, but uppermost, determination to live.
"The rules are..." He glared up at the child, black ooze dripping from his mouth as his eyes turned dark with just a small red pinprick of light, "KILL..." he surrounded the child with knife like pellets, that danced as they floated in the air, " O R B E K I L L E D," He sent them crashing towards the child as they made a whirling sound from cutting through the air.
Frisk's eyes widened as she saw the bullets coming towards her, they were all about to hit her, when suddenly she was surrounded by fire-like whisps, that blocked the bullets, causing them to dissolve it thin air.
The flower's eyes contorted with confusion, "Wha-- what? What happe--", he was cut of as a ball of flame whizzed through the air, crashing right into him.
Frisk felt the vines let go as she fell to the ground and a cry of pure agonizing pain torn through the air, she looked up to see what the sound was coming from. Her eyes shot open as she saw the flower was encompassed by the flames, his body burning as his face seemed to almost melt.
"HeLp," he cried through his own screams, "PlEaSE hElP!" His voice was hoarse as his once bright, vibrant petals, turned to charcoal black, "I DON'T WANNA DIE, PLEASE--" his voice seized himself as another scream ripped through him, his stem snapping in two.
The child's jaw dropped as his face stretched and formed into one that appeared more friendly, "I--I'M SORRY CHARA-- I...I" He cried out as the flame diminished, leaving just the head of the flower, burnt and wilted, "I...i....i....i failed you....." His face looked almost like a child's, his eyes now wide as he choked out his final breath, "forgive me, C--". He never managed to finish, as his feature lost life and all that had remained of him collapsed to nothing more than thick, black dust.
The girl felt her body shake as she looked at all that remained of the flower, fear crept through her. 'What had killed him', she wondered, 'is it after me too?'.
"Greetings, young one." The voice was silvery and sweet, almost too comforting. Frisk gulped as she dared to look up, finding a friendly goat-like face smiling down at her, "what an awful creature, torturing such pure and innocent youth, now I have finally rid myself of that vile thing." She said as she narrowed her eyes at the pile of dust and sighed, "It wasn't my intent to kill him, but I did what I had to...."
Frisk tried to speak, but her voice failed her as her head began to throb again. The tall goat-like women looked down at her, worry tracing her face, "You appear hurt, young one, please, allow me to heal you." She spoke as she knelt onto one knee and gently picked up the young girl, cradling her in her arm's. Frisk didn't protest to this, everything hurt so much, she just wanted to feel better.
The women placed her large, white paw on the child's chest, as a green light came to life, making the air feel light and warm. The green magic danced in the air, creating beautiful swirls of the color in the dark cave. Frisk watched as the light seemed to surround her, creating a tingling sensation as it began to lightly brush her injuries. She felt her throbbing headache go away, her cuts and scraps magically pull themselves together, and her bruises disappeared.
The magic slowly dissipated as the women placed her hand around the child's cheek and caressed her face with her thumb. "There we are, all better, " she cooed, " Now, allow me to introduce myself, I am Toriel, caretaker of the Ruins, and you?"
The child gave the goat a small smile, "Frisk, Frisk Epoh." Frisk began to shift and the goat creature allowed her to stand.
"Pleasure to meet you young one." She gave a warm smile to the child before she as well stood up to her full height. Frisk gawked at her as she realized that the goat monster was twice her size, easily standing at eight feet. Toriel laughed, "Oh my, this may all seem very strange to you child."
Frisk slowly nodded her head, her mouth still gaping in astonishment.
Toriel patted the child's head as she laughed, "This is called the Underground...down here, we are all what you humans call monsters, but please don't use that derogatory term wrong, we are all not as bad as your fairy tales have portrayed us."
Frisk blinked at the monster, "Wa-wait.....you guys....are real?!"
Toriel gave her a warm smile and chuckled, "Oh my, I'd really hope that I was real." She shook her head at the child, "We are all indeed, very real." She paused as she looked at the pile of dust and sighed, "Please excuse how I was behaving earlier, like I've already said, I had no intention of actually killing the monster, but I needed to make sure I didn't let another child die."
Frisk's brows knitted together in a sad expression as she began to walk up to the dust. She tilted her head as she looked at it, examining the powder.
"Child, what are you doing?" The goat asked as she looked at her child in confusion.
The strange powder suddenly began to shake.
Toriel's eyes grew huge, " Child! Back away from th--"
Before Toriel could finish her thought, the pile of dust suddenly erupted into many small, golden petals. Frisk fell backwards and tried to move away, but a few of the petals seemed to latch onto her cheeks and arms. She squirmed, trying to brush them off, only to feel the roots, suddenly stab themselves into her skin. She let out a scream of a pain and horror, as she felt the roots, wriggling with life between her skin and muscle. She kicked and screamed, her body flailing and twitching beyond her control. Her vision suddenly contorted, then everything became pitch black.
