This was absolutely insane.
A snow storm in September?
No way, but apparently it was possible in Poland.
Cole and Finn were rapidly shoving wood into the fireplace to keep the cabin warm.
Jackie was resting on the couch reading a book while Mr.Vandel was cooking chile for dinner. Cole loved the cabin, it was quiet and calm unlike the city which was loud and rambunctious all the time. Cole was actually starting to enjoy getting wood, it seemed as though he had been doing it forever.
Thankfully, Cole had become more liniant with Finn and the two were getting along much better. Jackie and Finn were friends, but nothing more.
Jackie on the other hand had adapted to the cabin instantly. She enjoyed how everything was silent and she could enjoy herself. Plus, she could read at least two books in one day since would not have to worry about being interrupted by Mama or Father.
"Jackie?" Mr Vandel shouted from the kitchen as he was skinning carrots and potatoes for that evening's dinner.
She offered a small smile, but quickly sighed at the fact that she could not read her book anymore. She obliged and reluctantly closed her book,"yes, Mr.Vandel?"
"Dear, could you please go shovel the snow?" He asked as he threw a carrot into the pot with a loud splash.
Jackie cringed at the idea of going out in negative eight degree weather. She looked down at her socks witch were full of dirt already and looked glumly back at Mr.Vandel," I guess." Jackie obliged as she walked over to Mr.Vandel.
Because Jackie and Cole and had lost most of their clothing she did not have any clothes with her that where suitable for being outside. Mr.Vandel was kind enough to lend her some of his old winter gear.
Mr.Vandel handed a thick red jacket over to Jackie and some old snow boots which were three sizes too big. Then he handed her a large shovel that was nearly as tall as Jackie was.
She zipped up her jacket and wiggled her toes in her boots. She glanced back at Mr.Vandel who had resumed to cooking. Jackie stomped outside and began to shovel the thick packing snow. As she shoveled, she looked enviously into the cabin to see Cole and Finn laughing and drinking something.
Jackie frowned and thought,
I want to be with Finn!
She didn't want her stupid brother to get in the way of Jackie's love for Finn, but there was no way she could stop him.
###
A half an hour later, Jackie walked inside, shivering, her cheeks and nose a bright red. She sniffled to keep the snot in her nose, but it managed to escape and it dropped on to the floor. At the sight of that, Finn leapt off of the carpet-where he was playing a game of cards with Cole- and grabbed Jackie a tissue.
Jackie managed a small smile even though it hurt since her face was so numb. She blew her nose loudly which made Mr.Vandel jump slightly at the unexpected noise.
"Okay, who is ready for dinner?" Mr.Vandel asked as he handed a bowl of chile to Finn.
He licked his lips and worded the smell towards him. The scent of meat and spice lingering in the air.
Jackie nodded in response as she pulled her boots off and shook them so the snow would fall out. Then, she hung her jacket up on the wire on the porch and then walked back inside.
Her stomach growled loudly as Mr.Vandel handed her a bowl filled with chile and they all sat down and ate their dinner like a pack of hungry wolves.
