To Catch A Performer's Smile
"You did great, Bonnie, don't think you didn't," Clemont said as he finished sorting out Bonnie's knee. "Even Serena needed practice. You've only just started out. You need to give yourself a chance."
"I guess so," Bonnie sighed. "But I don't have any ideas and all Dedenne can think of is flips! And Apple... she's sweet and all, but she isn't exactly made for figuring out routines, you know?"
"I know what you mean," Clemont nodded. "But there's nothing wrong with having more fun dancing randomly instead of planning your dance out beforehand. All this means is that you've got an extra challenge."
"Yeah," Bonnie started to think. "Maybe I could see how Serena plans her performances... or I could watch Aria or something on Pokévision... or I could try using Apple and Dedenne's moves..."
"Pin Pin!"
"Veon!"
"Poi!"
"Denne!"
"Braixen!"
"Pan Pancham!"
"Rita Ri!"
"Vul!"
"Wow, you're doing great!"
"Huh? What's going on over there?" Bonnie asked, noticing the crowd of Pokémon all watching something. "Oh, some of the Pokémon have been practicing their own dances while you've been working on routines," Clemont explained. "Serena's Vulpix was dancing a minute ago."
"Really?! The cutie pie Vulpix?!" Bonnie gasped, then was off like a shot to stand beside Serena, who was a judge for their little competition. "Bonnie! You're just in time, Vulpix is about to finish up!" Serena smiled, gesturing to the original Fox Pokémon.
After a Fire Spin around the little red fox, Vulpix primped, fanning out her six tails prettily. "Pix!" She smiled, then all the Pokémon cheered and applauded. Pleased, Vulpix ran to Serena, who scooped her into a hug. "That was beautiful, Vulpix! You're gonna be great for Pokémon Showcases!"
She set Vulpix down again, then looked at the little crowd of Pokémon. "Okay, Uh... Chespin, you're up next! Go for it!"
"Chespin!" The little Grass type cheered, running out there. He quickly began doing a little routine. He actually pulled it off quite nicely and was fun to watch. He used Pin Missile a lot to make small explosions of green sparkles, then danced beneath it all.
"Pin Pin!" He grinned and bowed when he'd finished. Everyone clapped and cheered again, delighted by his show. "Pin Pin, Pin Chespin!" He sang to himself as he hopped back to his spot amongst the spectators. "Silly old Chespin!" Bonnie laughed at his antics.
"Hm..." Serena looked at the crowd, some of them with curious faces to see who would go next - mostly those who had already had their turn to perform - and others with eager faces, ready to go up there and perform. "Okay, Sophie," Serena decided eventually. "You're up! Show us what you can do!"
"Vee!" Sophie cheered excitedly as she ran out and took a starting position. Since nobody had really seen her do this sort of thing before aside from Poipole, they were all curious to see what the little Eevee would do.
"Ee... Vee!"
She leapt up high into the air, backflipping. As her tail was pointed upwards, she used Swift, sending several glittery stars into the air. The moment her little brown paws touched the ground, the stars all burst into silver specks and rained down upon Sophie.
Sophie began a clearly well-rehearsed dance routine, making it look easy and effortless. She spun, rolled, flipped, twirled, everything she could think of was all crammed into one neat little routine.
She used Swift again and several stars hung in the air. She began leaping between them, doing a little twirl before leaping to the next one. As her feet left the stars, they burst into more sparkles.
Once she reached the last star, she backflipped, the star bursting beneath her. She used Covet in time for a heart trampoline to appear beneath her and catch her fall, launching her back up again.
The heart burst into red sparks and Sophie used Hidden Power once she reached her highest point, the move causing several multicoloured firework-like explosions to set off, showering Sophie's makeshift stage with sparkles of every colour of the rainbow.
As the fireworks burst, Sophie used one last Covet as she bowed, causing several small hearts to appear around her as an adorable way to finish up. "Vee!"
For the briefest of moments, barely long enough to even register, there was silence. Then the cheers roared up and everyone began to praise Sophie. They'd barely expected anything from her, but she'd done great.
"Sophie, that was amazing!" Serena gasped. "I can't believe how incredible that was! Can't you, Bonnie?"
No reply.
Serena looked to the young girl, who wasn't taking her eyes off of Sophie as the little Eevee got congratulated by everyone, mainly Poipole and Chespin. "Bonnie?" Serena tried again. But instead of answering her, Bonnie walked towards Sophie and knelt down by her.
Cocking her head curiously, Sophie sat in front of her, looking up at her. "Sophie, I need all the help I can get if I want to try out Pokémon Performances. And we'll have to leave this place in a few days time, Clemont says. So I might as well ask now..."
She reached into her pocket and pulled out a Pokéball, holding it out to a shocked Sophie. "I want you to be my partner," Sophie!" Bonnie smiled. "You can come with us and we'll take care of you and I'll brush you every single day! What do you say, Sophie? Do you wanna be my partner?"
Sophie looked up at Bonnie, brown eyes meeting blue ones. One held shock, the other held hope. One friend was smiling brightly, the other's jaw had dropped. It wasn't hard to guess which was which.
After a few moments, Sophie stood up again and walked closer to Bonnie, eyeing the Pokéball. She nuzzled Bonnie affectionately, then looked back up at her. She seemed almost... apologetic?
She then tapped the button on the Pokéball. But to Bonnie's immense surprise... She never went inside the Pokéball at all.
