One Sided Love
A Moment Spent With Him
I'm not sure I knew how to smile anymore.
I might as well point out the obvious and admit that I wasn't exactly sure if my limbs still functioned. All Luke did was greet me and my mind went into overdrive then overloaded from the thousand-megawatt smile he sent me and blow up all rationality in me to a point where I just stood at the top of the staircase wondering whether your chest rises when you exhale or drops the minute you start inhaling. I figured it out eventually.
I sent him a smile which, I thought I looked like a doll with an eerie smile painted on it with the most awful of colours imaginable, I received a grin in return. "You can come in. I was just practising, but I guess I'm finished." I walked past him and the threshold of his room.
"If I'm the reason you stopped your dance routines, I can go and let you get down to it." I hesitated sitting down seeing as there was that possibility that I'd be heading home again.
"Well," – his hand found the small of my back and he nudged me to the door – "you know where the front door is. See you at school tomorrow."
I stood on the other side of the threshold as the door slammed in my face.
Just. Like. That.
And it was all over before it even began. "Oh." I mumbled and turned to walk to the staircase. The moment I took a step, someone dissolved into laughter from Luke's room. I turned again and Luke's door opened to show a red-faced Luke bending over in laughter. He pulled me into his room and closed it. With the last of his laughter dying away, I continued to stand there wondering what was so funny. "Man, you should've seen your face epic. Next time, I'm getting a camera."
Next time.
The only words my mind registered, but only because one thought crossed my mind: Luke wanted to see me again. Inside, I was gleaming and jumping around like a monkey on steroids although on the outside I stood perfectly still and not because I could contain myself: I was still confused. My heart thumped loudly to a tremulous and unsteady boom-boom that I self-consciously placed a hand over my chest for fear that he might hear it.
"Ruth, I wouldn't ever let you get away that easily."
He took a step towards me till our lips were a mere minuscule centimetres away; I could feel his breathing on my skin. I lowered my hand from my chest and secretly pinched myself hard. It was painful, but I wanted to make sure that I wasn't daydreaming. My eyes voluntarily closed and I puckered up my pink lips.
Here goes nothing, I thought.
I took in a deep breath and stood on the tips of my toes; a faint smile stowed its way onto my face.
"Er... Ruth?"
"Mmmm?"
"What are you doing?"
My eyes snapped open.
I even took a step back for good measure. "I... Er..." – I cleared my throat – "Nothing?"
Luke chuckled while I kept examining my feet. I mentally groaned.
How embarrassing, my mind sneered.
I sneaked a glance at Luke to see him walking away. I looked up and exhaled rather dramatically, not that I was holding in a breath. Totally not.
While I was still engulfed in thoughts of Luke and me kissing, Luke handed me a mirror. I looked at my reflection, as expected, and heard him say, "You've taken red to a whole other level... Are you okay?"
I couldn't help, but fall into fits of giggles. Luke's eyebrow shot up as he let out a nervous chuckle. "Er... is that a... yes?" Another set of giggles erupted. I had no idea why. I sat down on the edge of his bed and took in a deep breath. My cheeks were flaming at this point. "I'll go get you a glass of water."
"No!" He looked at me with concern in his eyes. "No.", I said more calmly, "I'm okay. Just needed a minute to cool down." This was normal, for me anyway. I kept on having those weird times where I'd just convulse into laughter for no apparent reason. Mom didn't understand me during those times; I didn't understand myself at those odd stages in my life. Luke sat down next to me.
"So..." he began.
"So..."
He smiled at my imitation and, before I could lose all sense in me, I said, "I just came to wish you luck for the concert. Not that you actually need it. Just, you know, thought it'd be nice you got it so... er... break a leg when you perform." My timid self looked down at the carpeted floor while fiddling with her fingers as well as the end of her top.
"Thank you, Ruth. Your luck will be my back-up plan in case I really do break a leg" he chuckled. I looked up.
"I didn't mean that you should really break a leg–"
"Ruth..."
"Because that would be awful and horrible and–"
"Ruth..."
"You wouldn't get to perform and then it'll–"
"Ruth."
"All be my fault for saying break a leg when I meant it as good luck–"
"Ruth."
"But then you actually broke a leg–"
"Ruth!"
I stopped my blabbering and asked, "What?"
"It was just a joke, k?"
I gave him a flat look as he just grinned. "But what if it actually–" Luke sighed.
"Not again" he muttered.
"Happened. They really shouldn't say that–" My once comprehensible words turned into inaudible mumbles when Luke's hand was placed over my mouth. That didn't mean my worried expression vanished and neither did the words I uttered stop coming from my lips.
"Ruth."
I stopped blabbering like an idiot and looked up to be met by Luke's gaze. "Try thinking happy thoughts."
"Aw, what?"
"Whatever makes you happy?"
Another smile formed against the feel of Luke's palm. "Whike me gissing you?" I asked, not really registering that I just asked Luke if I should think about us kissing.
Luke's eyebrows formed a furrow and his right hand moved away from my lips. "What did you just say?" My lips started to form the words I had said when I realised I couldn't tell him that. It would most probably turn whatever we had into something awkward.
"Er... um... like missing school?" I suggested, hoping he'd fall for the bait.
"Missing school? What for?"
My inner self was grinning as she lay down on a chaise lounge and murmured to herself; "So we can elope to Las Vegas to get married in a chapel on the corner of a street situated between a casino and a diner open twenty-four hours a day."
As much as I enjoyed that thought, I pushed it away with all my might and pulled myself together. "Er... I don't know... maybe have a one-day wish list I could complete."
"We could do it."
Now it was my turn to furrow my eyebrows.
"We?"
He gave me a sweet boyish grin. "Yeah. We're friends." The grin he gave me faltered a bit. "Aren't we?"
I smiled. "Of course we are."
My English teacher would say it's a hyperbole when I described Luke's smile as having stretched from ear to ear, but then again, she could be wrong.
"Good. Now I can do what friends do."
I cocked my head sideways. "What are you talking about?" I didn't receive an answer; a mischievous grin is what I got. Slowly, I inched away from Luke. He simply shook his head.
Humph!
If he thought I didn't know what he was planning, he was wrong. Well, technically, I didn't know what he was planning... (Give her a star, the voice inside my head sarcastically told me) but that didn't dismiss the fact that he was planning something.
That does make sense, the voice reasoned.
"Talking."
"Talking?" I didn't believe him one bit.
"Sure. So how's your day been?"
"My day?"
He sighed. "Ruth... I’m not going to attack you or anything so just relax. You seem so tense as though you're expecting a dragon to eat your head off any minute now."
"You remembered?" I was scared of dragons ever since I was five: I watched a horror movie about dragons and at that time, I thought they were a sparkling purple color and they breathed out fireflies. I ended up going to sleep terrified out of my wits and I dreamed of a dragon biting my head off and tearing the rest of my body into pieces for its babies.
I could've spared mom and dad a blood curdling scream if I hadn't sneaked downstairs to have cookies and milk in the night in front of the television. Turns out, someone forgot to remove the movie playing on the DVD player.
The next day, I went over to Luke's house for a play date and I told him everything.
"Of course I remembered."
I smiled. "My day has been great."
"I'm about to make it better."
I started laughing like I would die if I stopped and I couldn't care if all the seven oceans and all the seven continents could practically hear me. I wasn't having one of those stages: Luke was murdering my sides by tickling me endlessly.
I was laying on my back by this moment.
"L... uk... e..." More laughter came from me. He continued his tickling venture to the point where I couldn't speak and I was taking short breathes of air to only loose gallons of it. "Ruth... did you really think we were just going to talk?" I kept on laughing that it soon turned into loud guffaws. My vision was blurry from the tears of joy streaming down my face, but I could slightly make out Luke's form smiling senseless.
"I can't hear you..." he teased.
Of course he couldn't hear me. I was just too busy being tickled to my near demise if he didn't stop this second.
He stopped. He finally stopped, causing my laughter to slowly die away.
I breathed heavily and very slowly.
Luke leaned into my ear and whispered, "Did I make your day better?"
"Ye..ye... ye... yes."
Luke hadn't moved yet.
"Excellent" he breathed.
