Chapter 73: CF

Takes place on the command ship!

Ezra was walking around the command ship with Kanan, just to get some peace from The crew. They were just walking, no talking, no nosies. But that was before Ezra had an urge to cough. His eyes widened as he tried to suppress it but knew it was futile. He quickly let the bursting cough go and turned from Kanan, putting a fist to his mouth. Kanan saw this was a hard cough so he lightly hit his back to help. After a minute, it finally passed and he sighed a breath of relief. Ezra nodded in thanks to Kanan and he softly smiled back. They continued their walking as if nothing had happened.

The whole crew was alone, gathered in the command center. They were discussing their supplies and what they need as well as missions. Ezra wasn't listening though like always, as he was thinking about the other day.
He thought about how he hadn't had to cough in a while and he was worried if he needed to start treatments again. He sighed as he pushed away the thoughts and tuned back into the conversation of Hera speaking of restocking.
He listened intently but felt a cough coming up. Knowing he couldn't hold it in, he let the wet hacking take over. Everyone stopped taking when they heard the hard coughing. They looked over at Ezra who was holding onto the massive holo-projector and a hand to his mouth.
The hacking didn't stop for a few minutes but when it did, the red faced Ezra turned back to the Ghost crew and said softly, afraid of coughing again "I'm fine, down the wrong pipe." Hera raised an eyebrow but let it side this time and continued with talking, always sparing glances in the teens direction.

The crew minus Ezra and Chopper who both disappeared a while ago were in the lunchroom getting their food. They were laughing at a joke Zeb had said and a dirty one at that so Hera was glad Ezra wasn't here. But out of the corner of her eye she saw a flash of orange and said, "Chopper, have you seen Ezra? I haven't seen him since breakfast." Chopper whooped and Hera's face contorted to confusion. "In the Med Bay? Are you sure?" Chopper whooped again confirming his previous comment.
Hera looked back at the silent table, "Um I'm going to the Med Bay to look for Ezra." She stood up and unsurprisingly, Kanan stood up too. "What? You knew I was going to come." Sabine then stood up, "I'm not being left out of the adventure." They all looked to Zeb.
He sighed and stood up, not wanting to be alone. They all started the journey to the Med Bay.

They arrived a minute later, looking through the glass the saw all the patients and injured people but the one that stood out the most was a blue haired teen in the back. They walked in and went straight to the back towards the teen but what they didn't expect was for him to be connected to so many machines.
As they drew closer they could finally see what he attached to. He had on a navy blue vest that was vibrating and a smoking breathalyzer in his mouth. He was sitting half way up in his bed with his eyes closed, arm draped over his face. They neared him and watched as the vest shook him as he sighed. He suddenly moved his arm and opened his eyes to look at them, with annoyance written on his face.
They all looked at him in confusion and he sighed into the breathalyzer. He took it out and looked the small dripping container under the breathing tube. Seeing it was empty, he turned to the side and turned off a machine connected to the breathalyzer, not needing it anymore. He turned back to them and said with a vibrating voice, "I know y'all have questions and I'll try to answer them." They nodded and Hera was the first to say, "Why are you here?" Ezra smirked, "Why to help the rebellion, of course." Hera hardened her glare, "Fine I'm in here for a treatment. One that is apparently way over do." She nodded, "A treatment for what?" Ezra sighed and said pulling the straps of the clips tighter, "For my condition called Cystic Fibrosis also known as CF." Hera's eyes widened, "You've gone this long without a treatment and coughing?" Ezra nodded, "I'm guessing you know what it is, does everybody else?" They shook their heads.
"Ok CF is when your born with thick snot in your lungs and you constantly have to cough and work to get it out. That's why I'm wearing this shaking vest and the breathalyzer had stuff to make it easier to cough up. And no their is no cure." They all nodded in understanding but they were interrupted from asking anymore questions as a beeping went off and the vest deflated as a nurse came over. She helped him take off the vest with the clips and placed it in front of him. She smiled, "You ready?" Ezra rolled his eyes and said, "No, the worst part and your happy." He swung his legs over the bed and stood there for a minute to get used to not shaking. She started walking and they all followed her into a room.

The room had workout equipment lined against the wall and Ezra sighed as he walked up to the one with wires connected to the front. He took off his jacket tying it around his waist and zipped down his jumpsuit, rolling it down to his waist showing off his scarred and slightly toned body. He grabbed a wire and placed it on his peck and the same with the other. He grabbed the last one and placed it right in the middle of his stomach. He sighed and looked back. He said with a straight face, "Now I run till I hack." He turned back to the front and pressed start.

The crew turned to the nurse and she said immediately, "We need to get a sample of the mucus in his lungs to test it. And since he is to fit to run, I would grab a chair." They all went around the room grabbing chairs and put them off to the side of the treadmill.
They watched Ezra run fast on the machine, not once turning it up or down. "How long have you gone on this speed for?" Zeb asked after a few minutes. Ezra shrugged, "Hour tops but since I haven't had a treatment in about 2 years so I'm probably only going to last 10 minutes." They nodded and watched as he ran with a normal heart rate.
After 10 minutes Ezra turned off the machine and let himself be carried off to the edge with the wires being ripped off in the process and started coughing while leaning against the handles of the treadmill. The nurse handed him a bowl and he turned and spitted and passed it back while still coughing. He knelt down to the floor while the nurse rubbed his back.
She spared a glance at the bowl in her hand and saw blood mixed in. She looked back at him to see him stop coughing and gasping for air. Once he got his breath back, he stood up while rubbing his chest. She looked at him with a glare, "Ezra you better be glad I can't hurt you. Going for 2 years without treatment. Are you an idiot?" Ezra looked ready to answer but she continued with, "Don't answer that. Just go out and put the breathalyzer back on, your coughing up blood thanks to your idiotic choices." Ezra rolled his eyes and started walking out, "Well sorry for being a street rat." She sighed and looked back to The crew.
"Ok, I was wondering if Ezra could do his treatments on the Ghost? I can give you a vest to have." Hera nodded with a smile, "Of course he can." The nurse smiled thankfully and walked out of the workout room. She saw Ezra on a now flat bed sleeping with an oxygen mask instead of a breathalyzer. He was facing them with his jumpsuit stilled rolled down. Hera smiled as she saw the kid and went up to him, pulling a blanket from the end of the bed. He sighed into the mask and snuggled into the blanket.
Hera walked back over to her crew which was standing in the middle of room at the round desk that had about three other nurses in the center as well. The nurse smiled and wrote down something on a piece of paper. She handed it to Hera and said, "This is his treatment schedule. If you are on a mission, he can skip a treatment. If your not, make sure he does it. Now let me get the vest." She walked out from the counter again and went to Ezra's bed. She crept around him and grabbed the vest which he must of set on the bedside table. She grabbed the inflatable vest and the machine attached and put it in a wooden basket from under the table. She walked back over and said giving it to Zeb, "He knows how to work it so don't let him trick you. And that should be it." Hera nodded and asked one last question, "What about the breathalyzer?" The nurse nodded, "If you want to do that with the vest, that's good too. It'll help with hacking. It only takes about 15 minutes. If your planning on doing it, I can give you that machine as well as the medication for it too. He should also know how to that as well. " Hera nodded and the nurse walked over to the back counter. Opening the cabinet, she pulled out a new breathalyzer and bottles of the drugs they need. She walked up to Zeb and put that in the basket as well. She then walked over to Ezra and turned off the breathalyzer and gently pulled off the mask, making him cough in his sleep from the fresh air. She took the machine away and placed it in the sink. She returned to The crew, "Do you want me to wake him or are you going to carry him?" Hera looked at Kanan with a knowing look, "It's ok, Kanan will carry him." Kanan walked up to the bed and rolled back the covers making goosebumps erupt over Ezra's skin. Kanan grabbed under his arms and hulled him into his arms. Ezra laid limp against his chest and was breathing deeply. The couple walked back over and Hera said, "Thank you so much for taking care you him." The nurse smiled and watched as The crew left.

They all walked through the base with Ezra still sleeping, occasionally coughing in his sleep. They did get stares from other rebels because of Ezra's scars but nothing they couldn't ignore.
They walked onto the Ghost and Zeb and Hera immediately went to the Med Bay to put the new machinery away, Kanan and Ezra went to the teens cabin to put him to bed, and Sabine went to room because of new inspiration.

Kanan carefully lifted Ezra into his bed,
placing a blanket over the tan skin. He sighed at the warmth which quickly turned into light coughing. Kanan smiled and walked out, going to the Med Bay of the Ghost.
He walked in to find Hera taping the treatment schedule to the wall for everyone to see. He could also see the wooden basket on the counter in the back. "Everything good? It's 9:00, everyone's heading to bed." Hera nodded making her lekku sway. "I am Love. Just putting everything away." Her gaze hardened, "And I still can't believe he didn't tell us." Kanan sighed, leaning against the doorway, "Maybe he was scared. Let's ask him tomorrow ok? I know I'm tired." Hera nodded and followed him as they walked out of the Med Bay.

The next day in mid afternoon, Hera was in the cockpit when a alarm went off on the console. She silenced it and grabbed her comm, "Ezra, time for your treatment." She received a groan in response. She got up and went to the Med Bay to make sure he did his vest and breathalyzer.

Hera walked in to found Ezra sitting on the center bed with an annoyed look planted on his face. Hera smiled and walked over to the wooden basket to pass it over to the teen. He sighed as he grabbed it and started taking all the contents out. He started measuring everything to put into the breathalyzer and placed that back down on the bed to strap on his vest, making sure all clips were buckled before starting the air. He grabbed the breathalyzer again and turned that on, quickly placing it between his teeth as the smoke began.
Hera smiled softly as she walked out, her job finished. But as she walked out she remembered her question. She sighed and continued walking, not wanting to interrupt his session.

Ezra sighed and thought of something to occupy him for the next 20 minutes. He just rolled his eyes and moved his legs around till he was on his knees. He closed his eyes and focused on everything around him. His breathing, the repeating sounds of his medical equipment, his heart, and the force. He could feel himself slipping into meditation and was then oblivious to the world around him.

Kanan stopped mid-track in the hallway and smirked as he felt something. He turned back around and headed straight to the place he knew it was coming from.
He entered the Med Bay to see his Padawan with his breathalyzer still running with smoke and his vest. Kanan quickly hopped up onto the end of the bed and on to his knees, the equipment between them. His eyes slipped close and easily did what Ezra did and connected with his students signature.

Kanan said to Ezra through their connection, "Your actually mediating on your own. I'm impressed." He could feel annoyance, "Well there was nothing else to do so why not try something that I've failed at every single time?" Kanan chuckled, "True now I have a question." Ezra sighed and suddenly popped out of the darkness. Kanan appeared to and Ezra held out his hand, "I know the question. I'm in your head and if you want to know so bad, take my hand." Kanan instantly grabbed the gloved hand and they were taken to an alley.

A little boy no older than 8 sat next to an old dumpster, shivering. His blue shaggy hair and dull sapphires were a dead give away on who it was. The little Ezra looked up at the sound of footsteps from the mouth of the alley. Two big kids that were older then 13 came up and started to smile evilly. The bigger one of the two walked slowly towards the child, "When if it isn't little sick Ezra?"
Kanan's eyes widened at the scene and was angry he wasn't there to stop it. He watched as the preteen went up and kicked Ezra in his side, "What, too weak to stand up to me? Huh, rat?" He kicked the 8 year old three more times before bending down to the curled up Ezra, "You are weak, Ezra. Remember that, even your parents weren't strong enough. Like the saying goes, like father, like son." He stood up and kicked one more time for good measure and left with his bored friend.

Darkness surrounded him again and he couldn't see Ezra. Suddenly the Padawan's voice rang out, "After that, I never told anyone I was sick, that I was weak. I put up a mask and they all fell for it. But I guess not everyone did." Kanan smiled inwardly as he felt their already strong bond strengthen even more, "I guess I'm not like everybody." He could feel the content come off Ezra, "I guess not."

Heya Peeps! Hope you enjoyed and don't forget to comment! And request! Well that's it, Bye bye!!☺☺
