Chapter 69: The Lullaby
The Ghost just made it into hyperspace, escaping the Empire's wrath. They had just barely made it with their precious cargo, a nine month baby boy who was petrified as he was wailing in Kanan's arms. They figured it was just the action of the mission but man were they wrong.
After a few minutes of nonstop wailing, everyone started getting dull headaches and Hera said, "Just put him in my room. He'll fall asleep after a while." Kanan nodded and disappeared till he reappeared with a relieved face even though they could still here the high pitched screaming in the distance, at the back of the ship.
Ezra cringed as he heard the baby and thought about how the poor infant felt. He sighed and thought over his options but got distracted as Kanan moved.
The Jedi plopped himself back into his raggedy chair and sighed, "We've have to discuss our number of credits. We need supplies but if we-" Ezra seemingly made up his mind and stood up abruptly, cutting off Kanan. "Um I'm going to bed. I'm sure y'all can manage without me." And walked out without a reply. They glanced at each other in confusion but let it slide.
They continued there discuss but they suddenly noticed the absence of a wail. They shared looks and silence rang around the room. But Hera said suddenly, "Um... he wouldn't have fallen asleep that fast." Kanan sighed, "Fine, meeting over. Let's go check on the baby and get some shut eye." Everyone nodded and left the room.
As they passed Hera's room, they heard instead of wailing, they hear a voice cooing softly. Kanan overrided the door and creaked open the sliding metal. All mouths dropped as they saw Ezra lightly bouncing what they guessed the baby.
"What's got you so riled up, huh? I bet a lothcat could hear you and we're light years away but I also bet you don't know what I'm saying. Am I right?" They could hear babble echoed around the room. "See I'm smart like that. But enough about me, I want to know some more about you so I'm just going to grab your hand and we can see what's your story so far."
They watched as Ezra's arm reached from something in his arms and suck in a breath.
A minute later, Ezra sighed and a slow cry filled the silence. Ezra just moved the baby to his shoulder and they stared at the brown eyes that were leaking tears onto Ezra's orange shoulder.
"I guess you and me went through the same thing, huh. And I didn't need all the gory details. And next time, stay in your own memories, I don't need you having more nightmares."
The baby stared at them while swaying with the talking Ezra but surprisingly the teen started to sing a lullaby instead which had the baby calming down to the point of passing out.
As Ezra sang the song, he walked over to the bed and tried to put him down but he drew back his arms, making the others guess the kid didn't want to be put down. He continued his light bouncing as The crew smiled at the now drooling kid on his shoulder.
After Ezra finished his song, he whispered to himself, "If you get to sleep, I get to join and I'm sure Hera is going to be in the cockpit for a while so night bro."
Ezra went to the bed and slowly slid into the bed and laid down with the kid in the middle of his chest. As Ezra's breath even out, the baby snuggled closer and Ezra wrapped his arms around the infant tighter.
After Hera was sure he was asleep, she entered her room and silently pulled up the blanket from the end of the bed. The two sighed in their sleep and slept silently, not knowing about the watching eyes.
No one commented about Ezra and the baby as they got up. They had just docked the Fleets ship, ready to give the nine month over.
The crew walked through the metal ship with Ezra holding the calm infant. They greeted Ahsoka and Sato in the command center and she held out her arms for the kid. Ezra released the child but he immediately started wailing and wiggling in Ahsoka's arms. She instantly passed him back to Ezra which calmed him immediately. They stared in shock at Ezra who was blushing with the babbling kid. "Um... let me try something." Ezra said timidly.
He grabbed the baby arm like last night and sucked in a breath, eyes growing wide and zoned out. Everyone shared confused glances and a sigh drew their attention back.
Ezra looked up and said, "He should be calmer now and he could have more nightmares if you don't watch out." He then passed him over and he stayed silent.
They looked towards each other again, "Um what did you just do? And what nightmares?" Kanan questioned. Ezra looked at each of them with a smirk but it faded when he realized they were serious, "Oh your serious. Um I gave him some memories to help with the nightmares and those were caused by the same thing as me, watching his parents get um... murdered so I'd watch out." They stared at his in pity and he ducked his head and turned around, "I'll be on the Ghost" and he walked out without another word.
"Didn't know he watched his parents die. But what he did with this child is really advanced. Did you teach him that?" Ahsoka asked. Kanan shook his head firmly and said, "No but I would like to know where he learned it and what memories he gave to him." Everyone nodded in agreement while Ahsoka said, "I'll try what he did and see if I can see what memories he gave." They nodded once again and watched as the togruto grabbed his hand and gasped as she went into the same trance as Ezra did.
A minute later, she sighed and looked up, "Ok I think I understand." Kanan anxiously said, "What did you see?" Ahsoka smiled as she thought, "He shared a lullaby and a story." They glanced at each other and said in unison, "What story?" She glanced around the room curiously, "In the memory it was in a field with what looked like a four year old Ezra and a women that looked like him so I'm guessing his mother. He looked to her and said, 'tell me the story about how the sun loved the moon so much he died every night to let her breathe.' His mother smiled and said back, 'ok but this is the last time. I've told you a million times. Ok let's see the sun and moon loved each other so much, it was love at first glance. They would try to be together and be happy but apparently, they weren't destined to be together. The moon would struggle each night because the sun was there and they decided to break apart. So now every time the sun goes down, his heart dies while his moon can breathe.' And Ezra frowned and said back, 'But everything deserves to be loved. I don't get it.' She smiled again and said, 'Sometimes, love, there are things that we don't want to happen but we have to accept, things we don't want to know but have to learn, and people we can't live without but have to let go.' And that's the end of the memory." They stood in silence till Hera said, breaking the thick silence, "Ok we need to go. We have to get supplies and credits. Bye Ahsoka and I hope the little one does well." Ahsoka nodded her head in respect and The abnormally silent crew walked out, Kanan not even saying his Jedi mojo crap.
Everyone silently walked to their rooms silently, Zeb greeting a passed out kid with his arm over the edge of the rail. Zeb chuckled and rolled onto his bed as if creaked from his weight. He laid down as he thought about his roommates mother saying, how true it was. He thought about how many times he had lived to the saying.
And apparently he wasn't the only one thinking about it.
