That joke is supposed to calm you before all the angst. Enjoy!
Thomas's POV.
I watched as Alexander ran up the stairs in tears and all I heard Alexander's room door slam shut. Followed by sobbing.
~Flashback~
I was walking back to the office building in congress me and Alexander work at. Happy that the day is finally over because I have been getting weird looks all day. And Alexander hasn't been answering any of my texts or calls. And I heard from one of the front ladies that he left early in a panic. So I've been worried sick about him all day.
Alexander Hamilton. My husband of three years. Happily married.
As I stepped into my office, to collect my things for the night, but was met with a strong slap to the face.
I gasped and took a step back as I rose a hand to my cheek. My mouth was agape as I looked up to see who had hit me. And that's when I came face to face with John Laurens. In tears...
"What the actual fuck Laurens?!" I screamed in the empty office. He glared at me and balled up his fists.
"Congratulations." He whispered. I was confused before he shoved his phone in my face. I took the device from his hand and scanned the screen. My eyes widened as I saw what was on the screen.
Thomas Jefferson - Secretary of State under President George Washington - Has been seen leaving a local night time bar - Revolutionary Rounds - With James Madison. Another secretary and Senator. The pair were leaving the building, kissing and "all over each other" one reporter says. All happening while Mr. Jefferson has been married to Alexander Hamilton.
Secretary of the Treasury. And adopted son of the George Washington.
The scandal has been -
I stopped reading as tears blurred my vision. I looked up at John and now understood why he was here.
"John I-" I stopped when there was a knock on my office door. I stepped back and turned to answer the door. Being greeted with a teary eyed James Madison.
"Thomas...wh-what are we gonna do?" He said. I stepped back and looked to John who was staring in disgust at me.
"I let go of my feelings for Alexander for you. Knowing he would be happier with you. Knowing I didn't stand I chance with you. So I stood by and watched by as you two dated and soon got married. And on your two's wedding day, you made vows to each other. Promises that you just broke. Ones that now only he's kept. He called me bawling having learned about you two's hook up from Eliza when she saw it all over social media." John growled at me.
"We were drunk John! It wasn't his fault! So don't blame him!" James pitched in. I shook my head to myself.
"Too drunk to remember the seven years he had with Alex?! Too drunk to remember how he's always waiting for him back at home?! But I guess he isn't good enough for you, now is he?" John spoke with venom in his voice. James sniffled and ran out of the office.
I opened my mouth to say something to James. But stopped myself finding it pointless.
"You really are a stupid ass man Jefferson." John spoke before leaving. The door closing set chills down my spine.
We were drunk. So drunk. It was after a long day of work. Alexander was home sick. I should have said no, but James insisted. And the next thing I know, I have a shot of fireball in my hand. Than after that, I wake up nude in James' bed with him curled around me.
I grabbed my bag and coat and ran out of my office. Out of that damn building. I fumbled with the keys to my car. But once I was in the driver's seat, I sped down the road and as fast as I could to me and Alexander's shared house.
~Time Skip~
I ran up to the door and flew it open. I looked around the room, before my eyes settled on the crying, shaking figure on the house.
"Alexander!" I screamed as I dropped my bag and closed the door behind me. He glared at me with tears in his eyes and stood up.
"I trusted you. Trusted you out alone at night to go with Madison drinking. Even though I knew that asshole has had a crush on you longer than I could even remember. I trusted you." He said to me lowly. I winced as he emphasized, "trusted" past tense.
"Alexander please. It was a mistake. I thought it was you and-" I stopped when Alexander let out a cold laugh. I stared in disbelief as he laughed at me.
I probably do look pretty stupid. Trying to excuse cheating as a misunderstanding. Stupid.
"NO! YOU CAN'T EXPECT ME TO LET YOU BACK INTO MY HEART! INTO MY LIFE! NOT AFTER WHAT YOU DID! AND IT'S ALL OVER THE MEDIA AND NEWS THOMAS! I HOPE THAT YOU BURN!" He screamed before he bolted past me and ran up the stairs.
~Flashback Over~
I stood and listened as Alex cried and insulted himself through the door.
This was all my fault...
"Alexander..." I took a deep breath and knocked on the door. I heard him sniffle and try to quiet his sobs.
"I'm-I'm so sorry!" I fell against the door in my own fit of pitiful sobs.
"I was so, so drunk. And, I-I thought he was you! I thought you were there with me! I thought it was you! Please, just please, don't leave me! I know I don't deserve you Alexander, but please let me stay by your side. Be in your legacy!" I cried into my hands.
"P-please Alexander, could you ever forgive me?" I whispered. I heard shuffling from inside and soon the door I was leaning against was opened. Leaving me on my back on the floor. I looked up and saw Alexander staring down at me.
I quickly scrambled to my feet and looked down at him.
"Alexander I-" He cut me off as he grabbed my hand. He intertwined our fingers but kept his stare of the floor.
"I-I don't want to leave you. And I don't want you to leave me, I know I'm not good enough. And I'm so sorry for that. But please stay Thomas. I can be so good for you, just please!" Alex sobbed out. I felt myself begin to feel sick.
I made him feel this way.
"Alex, baby, no! No it's not your fault-" I tried pleading but he cut me off.
"Yes it is! If I was good enough than-" He stopped talking when I wrapped my arms around him. It took him a second to realize what had happened. But when he realized, he clutched onto my shirt as he sobbed.
I lowered us to the floor, so I could hold him better. I held him close and whispered sweet nothings into his ear. Soon enough, he cried himself to sleep and I laid him in bed.
I watched as his chest slowly rose, then fell back down. I stroked a strand of loose hair behind his ear and kissed his forehead.
Just let me stay by your side...
