The City Above

"Stop dreaming of going up, there," Adam said breaking Killian out of his trance of staring at the city that stood high above them. "There is no way you are ever going to set foot inside that wall."

"It won't kill me to dream," Killian replies turning back to face his brother. Adam shook his head and put a bag of grain into his arms. "No, but I will if you start daydreaming like that then. How do you expect to get any of these chores done." Adam asks.

Killian just takes it and sighs and goes into the barn and takes a hand full of grain and tosses it to the chickens who wore currently closed off in a gate inside. Killian sighs and puts the bag back to its spot. He goes back out and takes the other bags which are full and goes inside to put them away. He was a farm hand, he lived with his brother on a farm that did belong to their parents before they died.

He hated working on this farm, he was much better at other things. Even though other things weren't the greatest of skills. Well for his class of people. The world they lived in was like this: There was the city of the high-born which was for people of a higher class. People who are wealthy, smart, and talented. Silis was high-tech and filled with wondrous things. However, the people who weren't smart, talented or wealthy lived in the Dump cities, those cities were so far from cities of high-born.

Even if people of Dump cities fit the description of the high-born they weren't allowed in. Those people became the leaders of Dump cities and if someone in a high-born cities was like those who lived in the dump cities, they got to stay where they were. It was about who your family was now, not how smart or good you are. It was now about wealth and Killian was so far from that.

"Killian!" Adam shouts from the house loud enough for him to hear. Killian sighs and walks out of the barn and right next door to where the house was. A small story house with a cellar and one bedroom.

"What?" Killian asks as he walks in and puts his shoes by the door. Adam's wife would murder him if he got dirt on the floor. He walked across the spotless wood floor.

"I want you to run to the market," Bessie said standing next to Adam holding a list. Bessie was Adam's wife and just like her name suggested she was like a cow. Killian hated her with a great passion. She acted like a high-born but she was snobby and full of herself.

"Here is the list and money. Buy everything on it." She instructed him. "Don't you dare bring something back damaged also. My aunt is coming over and I want everything to be perfect."

Killian just nods and takes the small bag of money and the list. He grabbed his satchel, slid on his shoes and headed outside. He heads across the bridge and starts making the walk into town. As he walked he checked the list bread, fruit, candles, and some different seasoning. He rolled his eyes once more since she made it seem like he would ruin candles or the bread will be moldy if he got it. Bessie always acted like he was a child and needed to be told how to do everything. She hated him and he hated her.

He wished Adam would talk to her or do something to help him but there was no such luck. Ever since he married Bessie, it was different. Killian just sighed and shook his head. He continued to walk to the town. He first got the candles and then the seasoning. He then made his way to the fruit and the bread.

When he walked in the bakery the baker looked up and said, "Killian! How are you?" He asks.

"Just fine. Just fine." Killian said smiling.

"What could I get you today?" The Baker asks.

"Just a loaf of bread, Bessie wants it," Killian said. The Baker nods and goes to get it. Killian waits for him to come back.

"Here," He said handing him a box. The Baker knew how much of a pain Bessie and he was friends with Killian.

"Thanks, Greg," Killian said taking it and paid him. Greg took the money and says, "No problem, take care."

"You two," Killian said and left the shop and headed down the path that leads to the barn. As he walked down the path he sees another shopper walking past him. Killian stopped though as he saw them. Something was off about them, the way that they walked and moved about. It just didn't feel right with him.

He then continued on walking till they passed each other. Killian then stopped and looked at what he was able to pull off the guy. He had a wallet that looked newish and when he looked inside he found a few dollars. He was shocked at the steal. That man must have been on the council or someone with money since hardly anyone had that here. Most people had coins and if they had dollars they were lucky.

He shook his head and then as he heads to the bridge he saw Ted. Out of everyone in the village, Ted was the poorest. He had no job or money and probably no food. "Ted." He said.

"Killian," Ted said with a smile then eyed the food he had. "You wouldn't be able to share some of that with me." He asks.

"I got one better for you," Killian said the dollars in the wallet he found. Ted's hands shook as he took the money. "How did you get this?" He asks.

"That doesn't matter but you could use the money." He said with a smile.

"Thank you!" Ted said smiling brightly.

"You could use it and also so no one asks you what happened to go to Greg tell him I gave that to you and exchange it for coins. So you won't have to deal with people asking you how you got it." Killian said. Ted just grinned and went off to go to the bakery to get food and exchange the dollars for coins.

As he crosses the bridge he casually tossed the wallet into the river bellow and continued on to the house. Where he mentally prepared himself for a very long evening with Bessie and her aunt.
