Changed For Good

This is a Gelphie (Glinda X Elphaba, canon X canon) oneshot, requested by seabagel and taking place in an alternate Oz. Hope you like it!

"Come on, Rosie, time to wake up." Elphaba leaned over and shook the little girl gently. Rosie, however, made no move to awaken. Elphaba sighed- they were going to be late if they didn't hurry.
"Nessarose, wake up!" Her daughter's name brought a little pang of sadness into her heart whenever she had to use it- a reminder of the sister she'd lost- but she couldn't think of a more perfect name for the girl. With her blonde hair, pretty smile, and surprisingly normal skin tone, Elphaba's daughter was the spitting image of the aunt she would never know.

Rosie's eyes snapped open, and she smiled, seeing her mother. "Morning, Mama!"
Elphaba lifted her daughter up and spun her around. "Good morning, my girl. Today's a very special day."
"Pancakes?" Rosie kicked her feet, giggling.
Elphaba shook her head. "Not today. Today is the first day of preschool!"
"Is Daddy coming to take me to school?" The little girl bounced up and down.

Elphaba's heart nearly broke. Fiyero had died in a kitchen fire when Elphaba was still pregnant. The toaster had caught, and he hadn't stood a chance. Why did scarecrows have to be so flammable?

"No, baby, Daddy's not coming. I'm taking you today." Elphaba swiped away a traitorous tear. "Do you want to wear your pretty dress?"
Rosie nodded solemnly, and the two found the dress that she loved- an emerald green dress with a tutu skirt and lots of plastic crystals.

Mother and daughter ate breakfast, and then took a broom ride to Emerald City Preschool. When they arrived, it was a little early- the only people there were a little boy climbing the playground and his mother, the most beautiful woman that Elphaba had ever seen.

********

Glinda was having a rough morning. No matter how hard she tried, Wyz wasn't cooperating. He was refusing to do everything from finish his breakfast to putting his shoes on. Everything was a battle, and she was frazzled and exhausted by the end of it.
"Come on, Wyz. Just get out of the bubble."
The little boy shook his head. Curse him, he looked just like his father- or what she assumed his father looked like. Erik had worn a mask, and never taken it off, even when he left her alone. Wyz had dark hair and the most wonderfully warm dark eyes. He was handsome and the light of her day, but every time she saw him, she was reminded of her foolish mistakes.

"We're going to be late if you don't move it, right now!" Glinda didn't want to use her magic, not on the first day, but sometimes she had no choice.
That stubborn little boy, he shook his head again. She hissed a curse under her breath, then flicked her tiny wand. Wyz's straps unbuckled, the bubble popped, and he floated to her side. "Can we go to the playground, Mama?"
"Of course, my boy." Glinda held his hand, trying not to wince has his sticky fingers left stains on her dress.

At the playground, Glinda watched Wyz playing, flicking her hand every once in a while to keep him from falling. She looked up for a split second, and was surprised to see a little blonde girl playing with Wyz. The girl was a pretty little thing, and her eyes were startling- a wildly emerald green. She looked past the little girl, and her jaw dropped.

Standing behind her was an incredibly, strangely beautiful woman. She had black hair that cascaded down her back in a braid, wickedly intelligent dark eyes, and a clever smile. The thing than unnerved Glinda most was the woman's skin. It was- green.

"E-Elphaba?" The words launched themselves out of her mouth before she could stop them. The woman turned around, and her eyes lit up.

"Galinda?" Elphie leaped up and walked over to her. "It's really you?"

Glinda was so ecstatic to see her best friend that she didn't even bother to correct her. Thanks to the way Elphaba said it, she was liking her old name more and more. "Oh, Elphie! I've missed you so much, I was afraid I'd never see you again."

Elphaba hugged Glinda, holding her close. She was exactly the same as she remembered- blonde and smiling, dressed in prim pink and smelling of cotton candy. Where had she smelled that recently, that had made her think of her old friend?

Glinda buried her face in her old friend's shoulder, beaming. Elphaba had changed so much, and yet she was exactly the same. She had the same old smile, same old dress all in black, and same old smell of musty books. Her hair was loose for the first time in a long time, and it made her look so much more mature and grown up. It really was the sign of time passing.

Elphaba jerked her head up suddenly as she realized where she recognized the scent of cotton candy. Rosie had been at daycare a few weeks ago, and Elphaba had taken a refresher Potions course at the Emerald City Extended Education Center. They'd been brewing a love potion, and each person's smelled like the person they were in love with. Hers had turned a sickly shade of pink, and an overpowering smell had surrounded her. At the time, she hadn't been able to place it, but now it was all too clear.

The smell- cotton candy and rose petals- belonged to Glinda.

Okay, guys, sorry for breaking schedule with this one. I usually get one out every night, but this one took a little longer. Glad it did, though- I'm really proud. Hope you like it, too!
