Brown eyes meet blue. Tears fall. Fingers interlock. They both know what's happening, but neither wants to think about it.

They don't even want to acknowledge it, just to get lost in each other and pretend that everything is okay. Except it's not, and it isn't going to be.

The blonde breaks the silence with a soft sigh, letting her forehead rest on that of her lover. She squeezes the girl's hand as tightly as she can, knowing well what's going to happen in a few minutes or less. "Baby...."

She's softly shushed, a shaky hand wiping away her tears. "Don't cry. Not for me."

Brown eyes slowly losing life. Blue eyes glassed over with tears. Nothing but love showing behind both.

"I... I love you."

Silence. Silence. Silence. A final breath.

"I love you, too."

And that's it.

She doesn't move for a good fifteen minutes. She sits and cries over the girl she lost, replaying that last "I love you" over and over in her head.

But finally, she wills herself to stand, holding her love in her arms. "Don't worry, I'm going to find you somewhere beautiful to rest."

And with that in mind, she starts her trek down the dusty street.

By early morning, she finds a place. A perfect place, really. One you wouldn't expect to find in a country torn by war.

It's hidden by trees, and full of life. Flowers, forest animals, they're everywhere. It's almost like a safe haven, clouding the simple fact a war is going on.

She watches with curious blue eyes as a butterfly floats past her. An Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, a favourite of her lost lover.

Lying the girl in the grass, she begins to dig. She digs until her limbs ache and longer, until she's finally content with the size and depth of the hole in the ground. And then she lowers her brown-eyed beauty inside.

But that's not enough. She looks around, her eyes landing on a small patch of flowers. She picks them one by one, forming a small bouquet, before placing it under her lover's hand.

She finishes by attempting to fix the girl up, smoothing out her brunette locks and re-positioning the necklace she wears.

Finally, wiping fresh tears from her reddened cheeks, she kisses her love on the forehead one last time. "I won't forget you."

The process of tossing the dirt back into the hole proves to be harder than first anticipated. She doesn't want to cover her baby, she wants everyone and everything to see her.

But she knows she has to. So she does.

After it's all back into place, and a stone is put at the head of the grave, she lies on the ground in exhaustion. "I'm sorry I couldn't save you, love. I'm so sorry. I love you, forever."

The Eastern Tiger Swallowtail flutters over, landing on top of the marked stone.

And the blue-eyed girl cries.
