Who Knew (Ray Stantz)
I smiled as I looked at the four guys sitting on the steps of the Ghostbusters station. They looked so serious but I knew better. Especially when it came to Peter Venkman. And to an extent, Ray Stantz as well. I could take the quietness and seriousness of Egon Spengler and I didn't know Winston Zeddemore all that well but he didn't strike me as fitting in with the three guys I knew from college. He fit in with mine and Ray's crowd maybe but only because he didn't fit in with Egon or Peter. I frowned as I looked over the four Ghostbusters.
"Come on guys! Smile! This is promotional but that doesn't mean it has to look like a prison photo!" I joked as I brought my camera up to my eyes and started to take pictures. "This is surprising coming from you Pete. Always talking. Always cracking jokes. But get him in front of a camera and he's dead." Ray cracked a smile which made me smile again as I quickly captured it on film. "Thank you Ray. Come on Egon. I know you don't smile often but please. For like two pictures?" I lowered the camera slightly to see Egon still looking stoic. "Ok. If not for two pictures, how about you do it for me? For one picture?" I pouted a little, knowing that always got Egon in college. I grinned like a mad man when Egon finally smiled and I snapped as many pictures as I could while his smile lasted. Winston had been smiling throughout the entire exchange which was nice since it wasn't something I had to worry about. Peter still wouldn't smile though. "Alright. Give me like two minutes. I need to switch out this roll of film." I said as I walked back to my little station that I had set up.
"Come on Venkman. This was your idea. Why can't you do what (y/n) says?" I heard Ray say behind me. I smiled a little at how he was trying to stick up for me.
"We are supposed to look professional! Not like a group of schoolboys on picture day." Peter said a little too loudly and harshly. I gritted my teeth a little. I always tolerated Peter because of Ray and Egon. Over time I had come to like him but he still irritated me on occasion. This was one such occasion.
"(Y/N) has a point though Peter. We don't want to look too professional. Think of why we got some of our calls to begin with. It was your jokes and odd ways of trapping the ghosts that made people like us." Egon tried to reason. I was fiddling with my camera trying to get the new roll of film to sit the way it was supposed to. I closed the back of my camera and turned back to the boys on the steps.
"Alright. Back to it." I said as I started taking pictures again. This time everyone had a smile on their face. "Wow! There's the guys I knew in college! The scientist, the nerd and the dork who couldn't pick up a girl no matter how hard he tried!" I joked. Winston looked over at the other three, almost trying to figure out who was who. "In case your wondering Winston, Ray is the nerd and Egon is the scientist." I helped him out. Winston started laughing at the way that Peter's face was turning red and how he was glaring at me.
"I believe Ray was the one who couldn't pick up a girl (y/n). If I remember right, I got that cheerleader junior year." Peter said. Ray blushed a little and I stopped taking pictures.
"And if I remember right, she dumped you as soon as she realized she didn't even know what you were studying because it was so weird." I retorted. "And Ray didn't need to get the girl. He was happy with what he had." Peter made a face at me and I stuck my tongue out at him.
"Whatever. Are we done yet?" Peter asked.
"Not yet. I just a few more pictures." I said as I picked up a different camera. "Winston, Egon, you guys can go. I've got all the pictures I need of you guys." I smiled as Winston stood up and nodded to me as he left. Egon came over and gave me a quick and slightly awkward hug.
"Careful with those two." Egon whispered to me. "Need me to stay to help?" I shook my head.
"I think I can handle Venkman. Never really had a problem with Ray but I think I can manage if the situation arises." I responded. Egon nodded and followed Winston away from the mock photo studio. I turned back to the two left sitting on the steps. "Ok boys it just us now so loosen up." I smiled. In college it had always been Ray, Peter and me hanging out. I took pictures, Ray either sat as my subject or was doing his own thing (where he was still my subject unknowingly) and Peter was watching some group of girls somewhere.
"What you want us to do (y/n)?" Ray asked. I walked over to them and sat down next to Ray.
"I was thinking something along the lines of just the two of you being the guys I hung out with in college. Just sitting here and goofing around like old times." I suggested. Peter made a face. "Fine Pete. That decides it. Sit your ass down and let me take the pictures. Then it's your pictures first." I stood up and Ray watched as I nearly stomped back to my station. He stood up and made his way over to me.
"Don't let him get to you." Ray whispered to me. I nodded.
"I know. He's just a pain in the ass like he's always been." I said, fixing the lighting a little. "Why don't you go sit down? I'll just be a second." Ray nodded and gently put his hand on my arm before joining Peter back on the steps. I took a deep breath and moved the light closer to the two. I watched as Peter teased Ray about something and Ray turned a little red. I smiled to myself, finding the look on Ray's face cute. Well more cute than usual. He was always cute to me in college but I never said or did anything about my crush on him, fearing it would ruin our friendship. I shook my head to clear my thoughts and focused on the job at hand.
"Come on (Y/n)! You can't tell us to sit here and then not take our picture!" Peter called. I sighed and picked up my camera.
"I'm coming. I'm coming." I said as I knelt down and started taking pictures. Ray was smiling for me and Peter was doing his best to look like he was having a good time. Peter never had liked having his picture taken, even by me. There were the rare times I got him to let me take his picture but he always had to be alone. That was a reason I liked photographing Ray. He never cared. He just sat there and did what I asked him to do. "Peter, could you please have a little more fun?" I sighed.
"And do what? Put my arm around Ray?" Peter asked. I smirked.
"That wouldn't be too bad of an idea." I teased. Ray laughed. "Just do it Pete." Peter put his arm over Ray's shoulders and smiled for the camera.
"Better?" He asked with a fact British accent. I nodded and laughed.
"Much. Thank you." I said as I took some more pictures. After a few more pictures, I stood up. "Alright Pete. Time for your solo pictures."
"Finally!" Peter cried. He basically shoved Ray off the stairs as he got comfortable. Ray sent Peter a look as he walked over to me.
"Need any help?" Ray asked. I shook my head.
"Not right now but thanks Ray." I said as I lifted my camera back to my eye.
"Where do you want me to stand?" Ray asked as he looked around at the station I had set up.
"Uh how about by the table with my cameras? This way if I need another you can hand it to me." I suggested as I took pictures of Peter. Ray nodded and walked over there. "So Pete, you never explained why you don't like having your picture taken." I said, my full attention on Peter.
"I never said I didn't like it. I just don't understand why anyone would ever rather have a piece of paper than the real thing." He said with a big cheesy smile. I took a picture of it because Lord knows he wouldn't actually smile like that for a picture and I knew a good shot when I saw one.
"I guess I get your point but come on Pete, a picture definitely lasts longer." I said as I took a few more pictures. "Ray, I'm gonna need another camera in a couple minutes." I said over my shoulder to Ray. "And your looks won't last that long." I said, turning my attention back to Peter.
"Sure they will. They'll last longer than any stupid picture." Peter retorted. I smirked.
"A picture lasts forever Pete. Your face won't. Not in this business." I shot back. I held out my hand behind me. Ray knew what I wanted and handed me a new camera. I held the camera with a full roll of film out to him. He took it and put it with the others. "And definitely not at the rate you try to pick up girls." That earned a laugh from Ray and an offended sound from Peter.
"It's not my fault they don't want a piece of this." Peter said as he ran his hands down his chest. I rolled my eyes behind my camera. "Tell me (y/n). Why didn't you ever want a piece of this?" Pete said as he smirked at the camera. He was definitely flirting with me now.
"Maybe you just aren't my type." I shot at him. "Maybe I don't go for guys like you." Peter rolled his eyes at this. "Maybe I don't like smart, funny, scientists who fight ghosts."
"I'm hurt. Really I am." Peter said as he stood up. "Can I go now?" He was slowly making his exit which I knew meant he was done, whether I wanted him to be or not. I sighed and nodded.
"Yeah. You can be done." I said as I turned to Ray and nodded my head in the direction of the stairs. "Get out of here Venkman. I don't wanna see you anywhere near my station again." Peter fake bowed at me and left. I shook my head. "I can't believe him." I said to Ray once I was sure Peter was gone.
"What do you expect? He hasn't changed since college." Ray said as he sat down. I sighed and sat down next to him.
"I don't know. He's just so....." I trailed off. Ray nodded in agreement. "Well we better get this done so I can develop this film and get those flyers out." I stood up and picked up a new camera. I turned back to Ray who already was smiling. But it wasn't his normal smile like all the other pictures before. I didn't say anything about it as I took the pictures. After about ten minutes I stopped taking pictures.
"What's wrong (y/n)?" Ray asked. I was staring at him like something was off.
"I don't know. I just have this feeling that while the other guys looked good sitting on the stairs, it doesn't fit you. Well it looks good while the other guys are here but not when you are by yourself." I said. I stared at Ray for a few seconds more. "Is there somewhere else we can take pictures?" Ray sat on the stairs for a little while.
"There is upstairs." Ray said. I nodded.
"Let's go." I said. "Could you get the proton pack and the trap? I feel like those would look good too." Ray nodded and picked up what I asked him too. We made three trips to get everything upstairs. I smiled as Ray stood at one end of a hallway. I started to take my pictures again. "Oh yeah. This is much better." I smiled as I continued to take pictures. Ray smiled again.
"Want me to do anything?" Ray asked. I thought about it for a second.
"Yeah come to think of it. Hold up one of the traps." I said. Ray followed my directions. I took a couple of pictures. "And don't smile." Ray's smile dropped and I took a picture. "Perfect." I smiled and put my camera down.
"Done already?" Ray asked as he joined me by the table in the kitchen. I nodded. "That was quick. You normally spend more time taking pictures of me." I looked up at him, slightly red.
"Huh?" I asked. I knew what he was talking about but it was just a little weird to hear him say it out loud.
"You normally take more pictures of me." Ray said. I nodded slowly.
"Yeah well I guess that was the bad planning of me this time." I said quietly. Ray cocked his head and I had to fight the urge to go 'aw'. "I used most of my film on the full team shots. And on Egon and Peter. I didn't think it through and didn't have a lot of film for you." I clarified.
"Oh." Ray said. There were a few moments of silence while I cleaned up my station. "I'm just going to go put this stuff back." Ray said, breaking the silence.
"Ok. I'm going to start developing this stuff." I said. Ray nodded and started heading downstairs while I went into the bathroom which I had turned into a makeshift dark room. I developed the pictures and headed back out to the main room that served as the kitchen for the Ghostbusters. My old pictures where spread out on the table and some of the new ones were there too. There were never any rejects. They always just joined my personal collection. Ray was standing there looking at some of the ones I had taken of him in college.
"I didn't know you still had these." Ray said when he saw me. I shrugged.
"I always keep my pictures." I said. Ray nodded. I put the new pictures out on the table and sorted through them. I made two piles. One for what would be used for the flyers and one that would go into my collection.
"You have a lot of pictures of me." Ray said. I avoided his gaze.
"Yeah. You were always my most willing subject." I said. I glanced at the picture Ray was looking at. "Even if you didn't know it sometimes." I took the pile for me and put it with the other pictures in my little room. Ray was still at the table looking at my pictures.
"You were always a great photographer." He said as he looked up at me. I stayed in the doorway.
"Thanks." I said. Ray nodded and looked back at one particular picture. I knew which one it was without looking. It was the one time I had been in the picture with him. The day we graduated. "I always liked that one."
"Me too." Ray said as he put it down. His eyes trailed to the one of the four of us that same day. My mom had taken that one. "We look so happy together." Ray held up the picture. I smiled as I walked into the room and stood next to him.
"Yeah we do." I said as I put my head on his shoulder.
"You never really answered Peter." Ray said as he looked down at me. I hummed to show I didn't understand. "Why didn't you go out with him?" I shrugged. "You know he had a huge crush on you." My eyebrow rose.
"Really?" I asked. Ray nodded. "I didn't know."
"Yeah. He thought the way to win you over was to try and make you jealous. Hence the cheerleader." Ray said. I laughed.
"Like that would ever work." I said. Ray shrugged. He looked kind of sad and I didn't understand why. "Besides. I was too busy hoping someone else would notice me the way I wanted them to."
"Really?" He asked. I nodded as I spread some of the pictures out more, hoping Ray would get the picture (no pun intended). "Who?" I shrugged. He wasn't getting it.
"No one of importance." I finally said. I started to pile up the pictures to put them away. I left our graduation picture on top. I took the pictures to my room and put them away. I sighed and willed myself not to cry as I looked at the picture of me and Ray that was sitting on my nightstand. My mom had taken it one day while we were all hanging out and Ray and I had taken a break from studying to just watch some tv. I was leaning back against him while he had his arms around me. If anyone had seen that for the first time, they would have thought we were a couple. But the truth was we were just really close friends and I had a huge crush on him. I walked out of my room to start collecting my other things when I noticed Ray looking at me. "Ray?" I asked.
"You know I never would have guessed." He said quietly. I just stared back at him.
"Guessed what?" I asked nervously. Ray started to walk over to me.
"That you liked me back." Ray said when he reached me.
"What?" I asked surprised.
"I like you too (y/n)." Ray said as he pulled me into a hug.
